When an old friend, Scott, sends him an invitation to come spend some quiet time on his farm for Christmas Drake is tempted enough he not only goes – but switches off his phone and disconnects to properly enjoy the peace and tranquility. Can Scott and Drake each find a deeper happiness together?

This short story was an absolute delight. It’s a reprint (this story can also be found in the anthology “Welcome To Love”) but good enough I’m pleased to have gotten it as a standalone as well. Drake is burned out and I feel really needs to find himself again. Scott is far more stable and after losing his lover a few years earlier to cancer is ready to at least try to open his heart back up again. I loved how the two men didn’t simply jump into bed with each other – but slowly edged their way together instead. Having not seen each other since high school, even though they knew each other at heart they’d both done a lot of growing and changing in the years since they’d been good friends; so it made sense they took a little time to feel their way out to one another.

The sex was deliciously hot and I adored the emotional connection that both men relished growing together. While Drake and Scott definitely weren’t shy about sharing their bodies or becoming steamily intimate it was the relief and rest Scott and his small farm gave Drake and the human connection Drake gave Scott which really made this relationship sing to me. The men connected well sexually – but they each gave the other something else that they really, really needed. This helped make the story so realistic and so wonderfully emotional and romantic to my eyes. This was deeper and more intimate/romantic than just hot sex, this was about friendship and need which blossomed wonderfully to love.

The author did an amazing job with these characters and the circumstances bringing them together. This was a lovely, heart-warming story and one I know I’ll enjoy rereading many times in the future. Recommended.

Will Finn and Jared recapture what they lost in time for Christmas?

Finnegan Gables moved away six years ago, leaving behind his friends, the city he grew up in, and his lover, Jared McNaughtly. They weren’t ready for a commitment then, but now Finn’s back and hoping to rekindle their Dom and sub relationship…if he can find Jared, that is.

Jared’s not had an easy time of it since Finn left. His one attempt at staying in the lifestyle resulted in a stalker, forcing him to change all his contact information and move to a new apartment. He’s disillusioned enough to have left the lifestyle altogether.

A chance crossing of their paths bring them together the week before Christmas. Can they move past their separation and everything that’s happened in the last six years to find a Merry Christmas together?

A number of years ago Finn and Jared broke up when Finn couldn’t turn down a job promotion which required he move to a different country. The two men were sad to go their separate ways but each agreed it was the best option for them both. But now Finn is back for good and determined he and Jared rekindle their Dom/sub relationship once again.

I enjoyed this seriously steamy short story. I was pleased that both Finn and Jared had the sizzle to their chemistry as it made their quick rekindling a lot more believable given their past history. While the two men fall pretty quickly back into bed with each other I thought it was quite clear each had grown and learned during the six year lag in their relationship and I couldn’t help but feel it likely made their new, fresh start all the better.

Finn and Jared both enjoy a bit of kink and while a bad experience had kept Jared out of the lifestyle for a while they both eagerly jumped right back in. Readers used to erotic romances shouldn’t find anything too hardcore in this lovely short story – a bit of bondage and restraints, some spanking and toys – but overall I found there was just enough spice and heat to keep the rekindling of Jared and Finn finding each other again to go bubbling along nicely.

Readers looking for a happy, slightly Christmassy and very lightly kinky read should find this ticks all the boxes. I was really pleased both Finn and Jared had a good chemistry and a solid shared history which made their quickness reconnecting not totally feel like insta-lust. While there wasn’t much plot I personally found that the growing and reconnecting between the two men acted as a solid vehicle to drive the sexual connection and bedroom antics.

Sexy and fun, this was a good quick read and one I enjoyed.

Wanting to test the waters without ruining their friendship or working relationship, Kit sends Jasper a kinky picture for each of the twelve days of Christmas. Will the photos work their magic and give Kit his best Christmas ever?

I really enjoyed this Christmassy and super quick short story. I loved how even though the story was very short we get to see Jasper and Kit first together for a little while as friends and co-workers before the cat gets out of the bag and the two men finally indulge in some seriously smoking hot sex with a bunch of BDSM toys. I thought they had excellent chemistry and it was clear their connection was that of friends as well as lovers – which was really nice to see.

This would be a lovely, fast read for someone who wants a small taste of Christmas or just a happy, easy, spicy read. While I could happily have read a longer story about these two men – and I’d have loved to see a snapshot or vignette of their epic trip to Ireland to experience those pubs! – the short sharp bite of this short story was plenty to give me a happy grin and lift my spirits.

Hot and sexy with just a hint of spice this was a lovely, fast, Christmassy read that I feel should appeal to many readers.

Zane and Grant are unconventional and smoking hot together – only Grant has made no secret of the fact that he’s not intersected in children, and Zane is a single father to a young child. Despite the complications and explosive chemistry can these two guys make things work?

I really enjoyed this fun short story. Zane and Grant are both smoking hot werewolves and I found the chemistry between them both realistic and smoking hot. I enjoyed the fact they both had solid and completely believable reasons for acting the way they did. Grant was determined to set up his shop – the one he’d only just bought back from when his grandfather had lost it – and focus on his legacy and business and not his rabid libido. Zane needed work, and money, and was all for a sexily steamy good time when the offer was there. The two men circled each other and both had plenty of reason not to get more than superficially involved with each other. But life – and complications – always tends to get in the way.

I found the small cast of secondary characters both amusing and really well drawn. I feel the small town setting really worked well and offered a host of other equally enjoyable stories. This is an author I’ve read before – and enjoyed just as much as I did this go around. Indeed, it’s rapidly getting to the stage where I’ll likely give anything by this author a try because I’m almost guaranteed a humorous and enjoyable, quick read with characters I can get addicted to and a good, solid place with the plotting and romance.

I enjoyed the push-pull between Zane and Grant and felt their relationship grew along logical and believable lines. I particularly loved the chemistry between the two men and felt that the author did an amazing job letting both men be themselves while also slowly knitting them together to form the family they will become. I was thrilled when the eventual about-face that Grant needed to realise and I thought the author made it feel natural and relatable – and not a dramatic storm-in-a-teacup or blown out into an unnecessarily dramatic climax.

Fun and sexy, with two awesome heroes and a few solid secondary characters this is a great, quick read.

After her father’s death, Alfild’s life will change forever…

Being born blind in the time when Vikings had reached the shores of England, she has little to look forward to but a lifetime of service as a nun unless she can find a man to marry and take over the family farm—until she discovers two men with strange accents in her stables.

Who are these two men, and why does her body respond in such a confusing but arousing way when she feels them near her, when their voices carry to her ears, or their scent to her nose? Will she find a new life with Jorgen and Aldric, or will they abandon her to her fate?

Completely alone after her father’s death, Alfild knows her world will become far more difficult. Born blind, she knows her options are limited, though she strongly wishes to remain on her family farm. When Vikings come to conquer their small village Alfild sees her chance to avoid a life in the nunnery.

I really enjoyed this short story. Told by Alfild in the first-person perspective I was initially concerned this would make it difficult to fully grasp Jorgen and Aldric’s characters and intentions. But I was relieved when instead this perspective really helped me appreciate both how lucky and smart Alfild was. Her father had helped set up their little farm in a perfect – and completely historically believable – manner to suit her blindness, using different stones and wood beams so her staff could tap different tones and sounds to lead her in various directions. Seeing the world through Alfild’s sightless eyes was interesting, refreshingly different and educational for me. After reading this short story once I immediately re-read it (something I don’t do very often) to pick up all those smaller aspects I might not have caught on the first reading. The author did an amazing job with this and I found the story and Alfild’s perspective in particular gripping and delightful.

While set long in the past, readers who really love their historical accuracy might need to give a bit of leeway. I feel the author did an excellent job with balancing the actual harsh realities of the historical time period with making the story palatable and readable. I fully understand most Vikings and their actions were not hero material or romantic in the least, but with just a little bit of flexibility in this area I feel the author has kept much of the richness and difficulties of the historical setting alive and accurate, but still softened enough areas to make the story steamy and a delicious read. Personally I really enjoyed the story and setting and feel the author did well with this.

Sensual and steamy, I found Alfild falling for both Aldric and Jorgen to be a little fast-paced, but understandable given her circumstances. Readers looking for a refreshingly different style of story should find this suits their needs wonderfully. I enjoyed both the historical setting and the outlook Alfild being blind gave to the story and romance as a whole. This will definitely be a story I reread a number of times into the future and an author I plan to keep an eye on. Recommended.

The world has been devastated by a virus, leaving only the strong to survive…

All of her life, Kerigan LaRoux has had visions of the immediate future. Her dreams are of one man, Hyde Galloway, and a vision that draws her to San Francisco. She finds him wounded, in the middle of a gang war. She hides him and treats his wound.

They race against time, trying to save a colony of survivors from the gangs who want slaves. But can Kerigan save the man she loves, the innocent lives waiting for salvation, as well as herself?

For all her life Kerigan had dreamed about the large, handsome solider Hyde Galloway. She knew it meant she had the sight – a gift and curse passed on from her grandmother, but it wasn’t until her dreams changed and her grandmother admitted she, too, had Seen the world as they knew it ending that Kerigan knew she had to act on her vision and do what she could to help Galloway do what he must. Two decades later and much of what Kerigan saw and knew had come true. Unable to direct or select her visions – only able to follow where they led, she knew things would come to a head soon.

I found this to be an interesting and action-packed short story. Apocalyptic stories feel a bit strange to read in the current circumstances, but I found this to be fast moving enough and with an intriguing enough premise that I couldn’t go past it. The story is primarily focused on Kerigan and Hyde, but I was surprised and pleased when mid-way through they hook up with Nolan and Lainey – the two main characters from a previous story. While I have read that previous story (Come With Me) I truly feel it’s not necessary to have read it to enjoy this story. Admittedly having read Lainey and Nolan’s story I found it enriched this book, but Believe In Me stands very well by itself and I don’t think readers picking this up will miss anything plot wise.

If the world built into this story was anything other than an “after the virus wipes most of the human population out” style of scene I’m not sure the quickness Kerigan and Hyde came together would be realistic. While they certainly didn’t trust each other there was a definite and near-immediate bond between them. Part of me feels this was a bit too quick, particularly when Hyde explains he’d been sexually abused as a young man. I just struggled with him telling Kerigan some very dark secrets, and then them being intimate literally in the moments following that admission. I found it jarring and a little odd. I understood how Kerigan and Hyde needed to trust each other were linked in numerous ways, but I can understand if some readers feel they need to disconnect their brains a little and just enjoy the story for what it is and not throw too much logic at the situation of the world having survived the ravages of a virus.

This short story ended on a high note, but more of a Happy For Now style. I expect there will be another book coming some time in the future as the ending closed out this section of the story but left a clear trail of where I expect the author plans to lead into the future. Kerigan and Hyde’s part of the story seemed to be fairly well rounded though and I was satisfied with where the author left us.

With interesting characters, a strong and action-packed post-virus, apocalyptic world and a fast paced story this was a great, quick read.

But Barker isn’t willing to give up on his mate and is determined there must be something they can do to help Cody. Can they find a way to work through this?

I enjoyed this paranormal romance. Cody and Barker have a bucket-load of chemistry and the attraction sizzles right from the very first page. While it’s clear the two men have been circling each other for years, the sex between them is explosive immediately and as the reader it took me a few minutes to catch up and realise this was far deeper and more emotional than an erotic story of insta-lust. Both Cody and Barker are right on the edge, having denied themselves over and over for a decade now and each have grown and matured to the point where they’re ready now to try and make their situation work.

Often these sort of highly intense and explicit paranormal stories are written so the growth between the main characters and the relationship itself is the plot – but I was really pleased the author made this story much more than that. While yes, Cody and Barker need to define and grow into their relationship and the issues they’ve each carried with them for their ten years of back-and-forth there was also quite a few other plotlines – Cody’s inner wolf, his inability to shift and the complications from his Clan and family having thrown him out and tried to kill him when he was excommunicated. There is quite a lot of other items happening in this story and I feel that balances out the large amount of explicit sex quite well.

I was impressed the author didn’t just hedge around a number of these plot points and personal issues – I feel they were well detailed and resolved throughout the story in between the sex and relationship development. While Cody and Barker’s relationship was central to the story I feel the author did justice to the paranormal plot and particularly the more complicated plot surrounding Cody’s family as well. Readers should be aware though that there is a suicide attempt in this story (not overly graphic and certainly not in a titillating manner) that might be difficult/confronting for some readers.

Seriously hot and explicit but with solid character development, a complicated relationship and a number of interesting sub-plots I really enjoyed this story and feel it should satisfy many readers.

Heartbroken and determined not to settle for second-best, she returns to her father’s pack and puts the entire episode behind her. When she later returns, older and wiser, she has no intention for rekindling the old relationship, but Ben has other ideas.

I found this interesting short story to be quite a different style of paranormal romance. Character-driven, this story was refreshingly different in a number of ways and I really enjoyed how there was a lesser focus on inner-pack politics. Often I feel werewolves plotlines can get too bogged down in politicking or fights for dominance that feel too well-worn. While there is a bit of this toward the end of the story – I was pleased primarily that this was a very small section of the plot but also that it was dealt with fairly quickly.

The story is told initially through Cassie’s perspective and then later with Ben specifically keeping some of the critical details vague so the reader doesn’t grasp fully what the situation is. While I understood the author’s subterfuge, I wasn’t keen on how the reader was left in the dark of such a crucial part of the core problem between Cassie and Ben for almost the first third of the story. I definitely felt that when I was enlightened as the reader to what really was happening – it was delicious and wonderfully naughty, I’m not sure the author should have left the big reveal quite so long into the story as they did.

I also never really understood fully why Cassie felt she couldn’t question exactly what Ben spoke about and who the other person was. I can fully appreciate Cassie felt betrayed and cheated, that she was hurt and angry – that made utter sense to me and I supported her initial reaction whole-heartedly. But to leave without discussing it, to cut him out of her life and turn her back on him and their potential future together just seemed way overboard to me, especially when pride or her hurt feelings appeared the only justification for it. Even when Cassie returned, to admit she was merely sticking her head in the sand and ignoring the whole issue felt juvenile and a bit silly to me.

The sex in the story, deliciously hot threesome sex, was well worth the wait and steamy enough it should satisfy readers who like their stories explicit and spicy. I was intrigued by the fact that Ben’s other relationship in many ways was a lot more solid – and settled – than his relationship with Cassie. I felt this in many ways strengthened the story and certainly made it seem fresh and different to me. Even though I personally enjoyed the difference I’m not sure other readers will be happy that essentially it is the “other” relationship that is solid, strong and secure – and not Ben and Cassie’s relationship, particularly when it’s meant to be them who are the hero and heroine characters. I enjoyed it, but I could see that many readers may feel that’s a bit odd.

Readers who like steamy, sexy paranormal stories with both M/M, M/F and ménage elements should find this a hot, sexy and interesting story.

Epiphany, 1193: the road out of Winchester was hidden by snow, and Justin de Quincy was making slow progress when he heard the first faint shout. It came again, louder and clearer, a cry for help. Spurring his stallion, de Quincy raced toward the source.

But he was already too late. As the two assailants fled, de Quincy cradled the dying man, straining to make out his whispered words. “They did not get it,” he rasped. “Promise me. You must deliver this letter to her. To the queen.”

Eleanor of Aquitaine sits on England’s throne. At seventy, she has outlived the husband with whom she had once scandalized the world. But has she also outlived her favorite, her first-born son? Richard Lionheart, England’s king, has been missing these last months. It is rumored that he is dead. Many think his youngest brother plots to steal the crown. Only Eleanor’s fierce will can keep John from acting on his greed. Only a letter, splattered with the blood of a dying man murdered on the Winchester road, can tell her if Richard still lives.

With the same sure touch she has brought to her historical fiction, Sharon Kay Penman turns to the mystery form. Setting her story in a period she captured brilliantly in earlier novels, she introduces Justin de Quincy. Bastard-born, de Quincy is the son of a high cleric who never acknowledged him, bestowing on the boy–in lieu of name or fortune–only an education. As it happens, it is a gift that will take young de Quincy into the very centers of power–and into the heart of danger, making him the Queen’s man.

Moving from the royal chambers in the Tower of London to the alehouses and stews of Southwark, from the horrors of Newgate Gaol to the bustling streets of Winchester, de Quincy proves his mettle as he tracks a brutal and cunning murderer and uncovers the sinister intrigues of Eleanor’s court.

It’s Epiphany of 1193 and after learning some recent truths that shake up his whole life, Justin De Quincy is at a loss what to do. On the road, he is witness to a brutal killing in what he first assumes is a random robbery. Justin offers the dying man solace and aid – and is given a blood-soaked letter destined for Eleanor of Aquitaine, a missive that will change the course of Justin’s life forever. Now on a highly secret mission for the Queen, with no knowledge of who can be trusted or what path is safest to tread, Justin’s life careens onto a completely different course.

I need to admit up front I’m not a massive reader of Historical stories. Sure, I love some Regency romance (particularly Amanda Quick) when I’m in the mood, and I’ll dabble occasionally in other styles of historical fiction. But I’m usually not keen and find they miss the mark with me. The only other author I generally find an exception to this rule is Sharon Penman. Her epics (particularly the Plantagenet series and the Welsh Princes series) are enormous tomes and well, well worth the time and effort to read them through carefully. Here Be Dragons is still one of my favorite books ever.

All that gushing aside, Penman tends to write enormous books that take a large effort to read. Her Queen’s Man series (four regular sized novels) are a marked difference and in some instances a welcome relief. These stories are much more digestible, they’re a regular paperback length and best of all they are basically a regular Medieval Mystery style of story. For readers just wanting a spot of historical fiction they are ideal and an excellent way to be introduced to Penman’s excellent characterizations and writing style.

The historical setting and accuracy are still very strongly woven through the stories – readers wanting a clean, wholesome and “whitewashed” style of history setting won’t find that here. There are public hangings, lepers and beggars and plenty of treachery and political intrigue. Penman does not tone down her style or historical details just to make the story more palatable for readers wanting a sweet and happy reading escape – but neither does she dwell or give too much gruesome detail to this harsh and often uninviting time period. I feel she makes an excellent balance between what were the realities of the time and a reader wanting a good read.

The plot itself is fairly standard. The Queen charges Justin after reading the missive into investigating the death he witnessed and seeing if there was deeper treachery lurking behind the seemingly simple murder-robbery. The real joy – aside from the exceptional detail to history and day-to-day life and realities that the book shares – is in the vibrant cast of characters and how they all slot together. Penman has managed to condense the joy and addictive qualities of her enormous epics into a bite-sized regular paperback sized story and I love this series simply because it’s so much easier to access.

Readers looking for a realistic and exceptionally researched and detailed historical novel with a solid mystery and a slew of royal and political shenanigans should find this story exceptional. I also adored the strong cast of characters and found the plot – while not overly taxing – to be engaging and well paced. Recommended.

When Ann had moved into her new home, so too had her neighbor, Eli and his young daughter, Katie. Ann enjoys spending time with Katie and while Eli can be stand off-ish Ann can clearly tell he’s been hurt in the past and only wants to protect Katie. When the chemistry gets to be too much for Ann and Eli to ignore, can they make things work?

I enjoyed this hotly written, explicit erotic romance. While there is quite an age difference between Ann and Eli – almost twenty years – Ann is not some shrinking violet in need of protection and at no point did I feel Eli’s character wanted to take advantage of her. I was pleased the author took the building of the relationship between Ann and Eli slowly. While they both were at different points in their life the sexual chemistry and attraction between them was clear to see. I was pleased though that the author had the more emotional and realistic elements deepen as the story progressed. With a five year old daughter Eli had plenty of responsibilities outside of his own feelings, and Ann was careful in not wanting to over-step the boundaries of what Eli was comfortable with at any given time. I felt this added a lot of complexity and realistic elements into the story and made it a lot richer and more relatable.

While the conflict aspects of the story were fairly predictable – other man-hungry single mothers and a few financial blips – I was pleased that there were some problems and easily relatable issues that both Ann and Eli needed to work with and come to terms with. I was also particularly pleased that Katie was never part of any disagreements between the two adults. Both Eli and Ann had nothing but love for Katie and only wanted the very best for her.

With plenty of steamy sex and an enjoyable and understandable plot this was a great read and one I enjoyed.
