Animals by Gemini Judson is a sweet love story with a rocking suspense full of many twists and turns and some truly frightening moments. There are also, however, some slower moments, and I felt that too much of what was truly important was told, rather than shown, early on. Then when Ms. Judson shifted gears many pages on, seemingly assuming the reader would understand her reference, I couldn’t always follow along.

Jessy is a sweet woman still trying to figure out what to do with her life three years after the end of her lackluster marriage. I admired her ability to be blunt but kind, to tell Conrad how she really felt, and to survive her scheming sister and indifferent mother’s visit. And when she got the chance to pursue her dream, I cheered for her even as I wondered what she was doing leaving behind 6’5” of hot, devoted man. The other characters, however, fell sort of flat. We did not learn much about their history or motivations.

Ms. Judson was a little heavy handed with her theme that we are all animals, there were occasional minor but distracting editing gaffes, and just as a personal preference I do not care for the author calling cocks “meat”, but all in all, Animals was an enjoyable read that I would recommend to fans of hot romantic suspense.

Faewolf is raw, unabashed, and captures the emotion and depth of the characters portrayed, which means you witness everything. Although not suitable for everyone, I would recommend Faewolf to those who like dark, original works. If you like to find material that pushes the envelope, you won’t be disappointed by this story.

I would have liked a bit more world building, and more history into the “cult” that was in operation. I was a little unclear as to who all was involved, as there were a lot of faceless or nameless people who were supposed to be in the cult. The sex in these two is over the top hot, with several very descriptive orgies during the rituals performed “in secret” at the two universities. I enjoyed this book, but it is not for everyone, and I will be careful whom I recommend it to among my friends. However, if you don’t mind your mystery story with a “happy for now”, and a future of fighting the evil, I believe you will enjoy Dark Legion.

Craven and his friend Anthony discover they’re in over their heads the night they’re caught spying on Beresford Hall. But when Craven meets the dark, mysterious Dominic Beresford, he wonders if fate really does step in and take you by surprise when you least expect.

This bright jewel of a short story demonstrates in dramatic terms what happens when you believe you should not have something: you think about it all the time. Taking place during the most sexually repressive era in America, when young men and women were only supposed to think about sex in the context of marriage and then only in terms of procreation, not pleasure, the tale revolves around some of the inevitable ‘underground’ activities inevitable during such repression.

Craven, both desperately ashamed of and driven by his desires, is a thoroughly engaging character, poignant and sympathetic, while Dominic is absolutely delicious as the decadent, powerful lord of the manor. Their meeting and subsequent budding relationship proceeds in a smoothly written, flowing style, intense and heated on both sides.

My only issue with this work is that it is the beginning of what should be a longer work marketed as a short story. There will, no doubt, be more (and there should be) but this piece ends just as the romance begins to get underway. Vlar is a legendary warrior that has trained many men and there is no real evidence that the connection between Vlar and Gaven goes beyond that superficial interaction. There is no real romance and emotion between the men, thus eliminating the happy ending and not delivering on the romance aspect of the book.

My other issue is the lack of world building in the story. Other than the initial introduction to the Masarians and a statement of their rituals, very little detail is offered to develop this intricate new fantasy world. I was left feeling as if the story is based on ancient civilizations rather than a new fantasy setting. This didn’t detract from the story but didn’t add enough detail and texture to fully deliver a new and exciting world.

Overall, this is a highly enjoyable book as the strengths are the great writing and fabulous character of Gaven. Although the supporting characters were predictable and empty, the solid narration carried the fast paced story. Fans of fantasy romance will sympathize with Gaven but likely be left wanting with the lack of relationship presented. However, perhaps the author will offer a sequel where Vlar and his intriguing vampire tendencies will be explored. With a gorgeous cover and absorbing story, you should still be sure to get this one.

Unfortunately, all the explanations get the story off to a rather slow start. While the reader wants to know about these things, it might have been better to pepper some of the exposition into the story here and there, into dialogue and interaction. Too many passages of information and explanation made the novel a little difficult to stick with at times, bogging down the flow of the narrative. I had trouble mustering emotional involvement until perhaps halfway through the book. Issues with the editing of dialogue only added to the distance. I’m fully prepared for more formal diction in my vampires but formality often slid into stiffness and even grammatical pitfalls. (e.g. this little passage here: Erik muttered through bared teeth. “However repugnant your methods are, my leader has saw fit to grant your pater-sire, and by extension you, Clan Lucienna’s protection.”)

Once it gets rolling, there is a good, core story here and the characters, through their actions, get a chance to show who they are. I will confess a rather stronger attachment to the duty and honor bound Erik than the roguish Hail, whom I suspect I was supposed to like more, but they acted as foils for each other and provided an extra edge of conflict for our heroine.

While it had its issues, the novel is worth the read for the carefully constructed world alone and the battle scenes are great fun. The ending felt a little rushed…but wait, there’s a sequel, which explains the loose ends. I’ll be watching, ready to pounce on the next installment.
