Emmett owns an occult store. He firmly believes in magic. His boyfriend, Jackson, does not.

Yet none of that matters because they are devoted to each other—until the night Emmett becomes the unexpected target of a sexual demon … an Incubus. Suddenly Emmett can’t remember their passionate nights. He’s slowly being taken over. And Jackson struggles with the realization that magic might just be real after all.

My Incubus Boyfriend gives us a quick look into the lives of Emmett and Jackson, a gay couple who despite their different beliefs as it pertains to occult magic have built a rather nice life together.

We see right away that Emmett’s belief in Occult practices is still a point of tension with his long-term partner Jackson, and conversations involving anything to do with magic or spells is completely off the table for the two of them. But this fact does not disrupt their healthy sexual appetite.

Elizabeth Monvey gives the readers no shortage of steamy scenes within this short story, consuming most of the storyline.

The readers get a nice taste of the relationships formed before this novel begins and even gives a slight nod to other interesting characters in the story, but these are mostly small facts that will get us quickly back into a sexy romp session between Emmett, Jackson, and an unintentionally invited Incubus.

I think the story still works well in its short format without needing too much plot substance, but I had wished the heated scenes would have been a little more intense. As a reader if I am not getting a deeper plot with slowly developing character arcs that really help me get excited for the moment when the passion ignites, then I prefer to get down and dirty and that it really GOES there. I would have loved to spend a little more time in the heat of the moment, really getting into the tension with our main characters, but the scenes felt a little too rushed to actually connect to. After all, there is no need to play nice when a demon is involved.

It took almost no time at all to read, but it did draw me in with anticipation of what could paranormally happen. If you are looking for a quick read with an interesting concept, and a mostly sex-based plot, My Incubus Boyfriend could certainly be the story for you!

In a world where being with someone of the same sex is frowned upon (to say the least) Angelo still lives his dream by following his lover to a new city, only nothing is quite as it seemed.

The Hampton Road Club series has an excellent historical setting, giving you details on how same-sex relationships had to be handled, speakeasys, and other things to tantalize and tease. I thoroughly enjoyed how Angelo came out of his shell with Bruce and George. All three had such different personalities and yet melded together perfectly. I was glad when Angelo had his moment with Martin, although I was personally wishing for George to get involved!

With no editing or grammatical errors I noticed, this was a great book, rich in detail and emotions. With fantastic characters and a superb setting, I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this story.

His forty-ninth birthday approaching, Ed is expecting nothing more than his usual stiff drink and an anonymous fuck in the back room of Yancy’s Crossings. What he never expected was to be picked up by two college students and taken for a ride that would change his life forever.

Ed is bearing down on turning forty-nine and even though he didn’t live the life of a virgin, it had been a long time since he’d shared more than a quickie in the back room of his favourite bar. I found this to be an interesting and very explicit short story. In some respects this felt a little old-school to me, with Ed dwelling a fair bit on his increasing age, but also the way his regular bar was set up, with a designated back room for voyeurs or anyone willing and interested to share flesh and sex with each other within certain boundaries. While I found the descriptions of the scene interesting and a little eye-opening, it felt a bit to me like an older style of club or maybe even a speak-easy. I really enjoyed this, but feel some more modern readers might not find it quite to their tastes.

Even though Ed, Kyle and Ryan get off on the wrong foot they all can’t resist the need and attraction building between them. While it’s clear all three men are willing I was never quite certain that the friction between Ed and Kyle would sort itself out. Readers looking for a gentle or sweeter sort of story might not find this suits their needs – even though it’s not dwelled on too long, there is some serious history to Ryan revolving around abuse and pain that might not suit every reader’s tastes inside their erotic romance reading.

I found Ed, Kyle and Ryan were all interesting characters and while their interactions weren’t very traditional or straightforward there is plenty of threesome sex between them and loads of tension and chemistry that add well to the story and make it really stand out as different to my mind.

A little old-school and very hot and sexy, this is a good and solid short story that I feel should appeal to many readers looking for something harder and a little bit different.

So many different things with this book – and I loved every one of them! One of our main males has a thyroid problem, and is a big man even though he is fit and eats healthily. To be inside his head when he hears derogatory comments is heartbreaking. And then, to hear how he feels when his mates boost his self-esteem with truth and love, is the complete opposite. Our other two main males are both Owl Shifters! Too often we get wolves, or big cats, or bears. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love all of them, but there was something so refreshing to read about owls, and it was exceptionally written too.

All three of our main characters are individuals. They can stand alone and be individuals. There is no blurring of the lines between these three. A softening, maybe, at the end, but definitely no blurring. All of the characters are well-written, whether you like or loathe them. Even one who is on the ‘wrong’ side, has her reasons, which are completely understandable.

Although this book is classed as book thirteen in the series, it is the first one I have read. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and didn’t find it confusing at all as this story concentrates on these characters. There were no editing or grammatical errors I noticed, and it had a great flow to the story, keeping the suspense when needed, plus allowing for some sexy times too.

A great story, fantastic characters, and a world I want to visit again. Definitely recommended by me.

Top 5 things I like to do (when I’m not writing!) by Jodi Payne – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Jodi Payne who is celebrating today’s release of Stable Hill. Leave a comment or ask the author a question for a chance to win a $5 Amazon gift card.

Top 5 things I like to do (when I’m not writing!)

1. Read. I like to read outside the Romance field. Most of my reading is actually not romance. I do read some of course, but I find I need to get out of romance-head when I read, and I also find lots of inspiration for characters in other genres. I love Stephen King books, forensic action/mystery novels, non-fiction, and I’ll read anything that makes me think.

2. Bake. For me, baking is therapy. I’m one of those left-brained types that measures and plans, so a recipe appeals to me. I love all of that. The smell of something baking in the oven is so comforting. Watching my family enjoy whatever I’ve baked it a good feeling too. I especially like to make breads (banana bread mmm) and muffins and scones and that sort of thing. Breakfast-type foods.

3. Superhero Movies. I love them. I love epic battles between good and evil. I love capes and cool weapons and superpowers and strong women. I love underdogs that win, winners that give others a hand up, heroes with a tenuous hold on reality and heroines who are morally ambiguous. I love every Marvel and DC movie ever. Almost. I don’t know about some of those Batman movies. I even love superhero theme music. I’m a big dork about these things.

4. Get out on the water. I love the beach, it’s my most favorite place in the world. I love to sail, but if I can’t get there, then I’m happy taking out a canoe on Carnegie Lake or even just sitting/walking along the bank and watching other people row by. We often get to watch the Princeton Crew practice and host regattas on the lake, which is fun.

5. Live music! Anywhere, anytime, anything. I’m game. I love live music, whether it’s a huge concert or a small bar. My music tastes are eclectic and broad, so I’ll enjoy almost anyone that puts on a decent show whether its upbeat or low key.

About the Author: Jodi Payne spent too many years in New York and San Francisco stage managing classical plays, edgy fringe work, and the occasional musical. She therefore is overdramatic, takes herself way too seriously, and has been known to randomly break out in song. Her men are imperfect but genuine, stubborn but likeable, often kinky, and frequently their own worst enemies. They are characters you can’t help but fall in love with while they stumble along the path to their happily ever after.

For those looking to get on her good side, Jodi’s addictions include nonfat lattes, Malbec and tequila any way you pour it. She’s also obsessed with Shakespeare and Broadway musicals. She can be found wearing sock monkey gloves while typing when it’s cold, and on the beach enjoying the sun and the ocean when it’s hot. When she’s not writing and/or vacuuming sand out of her laptop, Jodi mentors queer youth and will drop everything for live music. It is only when Luke and Josh hook up that they formulate “Operation Three Bears,” an adventurous plan that might lead to a satisfying outcome for all of them.

Dan and Josh have quite a complicated friendship, with both being interested in the other but Josh thinking Dan was strictly straight. When Dan meets Luke and accepts Luke’s offer to teach him to surf the three men enter an even more complex situation.

I really enjoyed this fun and sexy threesome story. I’m often a bit skeptical of stories set in Australia – it’s often quite difficult to capture our slang and culture without seeming clichéd – but this author did an amazing job in my opinion. I loved how Dan, Josh and Luke were three very distinct and deeply interesting characters, each memorable in their own way and while I wasn’t sure in the beginning the author helped me really believe that they were well suited and a balanced threesome.

While Josh and Luke manage to become intimate first, Dan is very much a side-line part of their growing relationship and Josh and Luke’s eagerness to make their couple a threesome was delightful to read. I loved how neither man carried baggage along with them or had a hang-up about the different dynamic to their brand-new relationship. It left me free as a reader to just sit back and truly enjoy their shenanigans. I also found the sex smoking hot and deliciously graphic.

A fun and interesting short story I loved this quick read and can eagerly recommend it to others.

Then one bear becomes two, and a chance discovery gets him thinking about what might be, if he’s bold enough to make a move.

So what happens when Aaron and Sam wake up one morning to find Tim naked in their bed? Will they get a new chance at life, or will history Threepeat itself?

Sam and Aaron had been devastated when their sub of six years had asked to be released from their contract. Tim had been living on the streets for six weeks after escaping his abusive family, doing what he had to in order to survive. When Aaron spotted Tim and realised how sick the young man was Aaron couldn’t pass him by. Bringing him home to Sam, the two Doms took care of Tim and help him regain his health. Only Aaron and Sam get very attached to Tim and offer him a position as their houseboy – unable to allow him back onto the streets. Is history going to repeat itself?

I found this to be a really enjoyable, full length story. I loved how the pace was slow and allowed me as a reader to really indulge in all the characters and the slow weaving together of the plotline. While at face-value it’s quite simple, there are complexities of emotion and all the tiny threads melting together of Aaron, Sam and Tim’s lives. The authors have done an amazing job of really showing all the facets of each character. I enjoyed seeing how the loss of Seb – Aaron and Sam’s previous submissive – cast such a long shadow over the two Doms’ lives, and how the complexities of Tim’s family and the problems of the situation he found himself in, homeless on the street, all melded together.

There’s a good, strong cast of secondary characters – and I would totally enjoy reading more stories about these various men – and they all act as a great support network for our three heroes. And while I honestly felt this story was all about the plot and characterization, there is a heady amount of kinky, steamily written BDSM-flavoured sex – which is never a bad thing. For me, personally, I loved the emotion of the story best of all. I loved how deeply I fell into Sam and Aaron’s characters and how interesting it was to see things through both their perspectives. I ached with them and stayed up way, way past my bedtime unable to put this story down and doing the classic “just one more chapter” thing. I enjoyed Tim’s character, and feel plenty of readers will be seriously attached to him more than the other two men, but for me it was Sam and Aaron who really stole the show. And Tim completed them beautifully, which made me sigh so happily at the end.

A deeply emotional, complicated and well-written story this was a beautiful and lovely long read. I can strongly recommend it and will be eagerly searching for more by these authors.

He thought he’d never find his mate, but nothing could surprise him more than the blast of need that fills him when a pissed off grizzly comes to their rescue.

Agent Decker Stauder has seen a lot in his twenty years with the Bureau of Paranormal Affairs, but the case he’s been working the last six months is unlike anything he’s tackled before. Shifters are going missing nationwide, and more are vanishing every day. Little did he realize when he tracked down The Collector, he would end up finding not one mate but two.

Forty-three and married to his job, Decker never expected to settle down. But once he scents Holt and Bastian, all bets are off. Not only is he claiming them, he’s going to bury the man who dared to cage his mates.

Agent Decker Stauder might be a shifter grizzly bear, but he firmly believed in his work with the Bureau of Paranormal Affairs, catching and incarcerating the worst criminals. Hot on the trail of a group kidnapping shifters for nefarious purposes Decker is surprised when he hears an agent of the Shifter Forces – Holt – has been kidnapped. Holt’s wolf is incensed at being locked up, but he’s even more shocked to find his fellow cell-mate, Bastian, is his mate. Decker, Holt and Bastian are all surprised to learn they belong to each other, and none of them are willing to give each other up.

I found this to be a fun and interesting ménage story. I was particularly pleased that while the romance aspect between Holt, Decker and Bastian is strong, the plot was more than just a token effort. The ring of criminals stealing shifters for various programs – breeding, entertainment, fighting etc – was intricate and very well thought out to my mind. Most of the first half of the book is centered around the criminal plot, with the bulk of the last half focusing on the ménage that grows between Decker, Holt and Bastian. Personally I felt that both aspects of the story were given a good amount of time and I was satisfied with the balance of the story. The pacing of the romance felt a little fast and unrealistic to me – particularly considering Bastian’s complicated personal history – but since the alternative would have been a lot of talking and very little chemistry and sexual action I could easily disconnect my brain, ignore reality and just go with the flow to enjoy the story.

My only real complaint was the “big bad guy” part of the plotline was mostly resolved off screen and in a very brief manner. Considering the good initial ground-work and the heaviness of the plot in the first half of the book I really felt that this quick wrapping up in the end didn’t do justice to the complexities and seriousness of the plot itself. I’m sure all readers won’t feel the same, but I did find this resolution disappointing. The romance and steamy sex scenes, however, were really well done and I enjoyed the ménage that grew and blossomed between the three men. Romantically this story ended on a lovely high note that I found deeply satisfying.

An interesting and well balanced story I overall enjoyed this book and will happily seek more out by this author.

Roarke Hilliard worked for the Bureau of Paranormal Affairs. Chasing down a crazed killer, who was murdering male prostitutes, Roarke is determined to finish this hunt, even if he is going into heat and his bear wants to break free. Roarke’s Bureau partner, Spencer, has made no secret of the fact he wants Roarke, badly. And much as Roarke returns his partner’s regard, Roarke knows they’ll need help to deal with his heat. Can they ride out the shifter-bear’s heat and still catch the killer?

I found this to be an interesting and short paranormal story. Set slightly in the future (after 2023 some time) this felt to me much like a normal contemporary/paranormal story. Aside from shifters being “out” there was not much really to differentiate this from a regular, contemporary setting to my mind. I was interested in some of the dynamics and world-building that the author added in – like a shifter escort company designed to help shifters get through their heat phases – and overall found the plotting and pacing to be really good.

I liked Roarke, Spencer and Grigore’s characters. I was pleased that they all seemed to work well together though a part of me wished the author had let us see a bit more of their personal side, not just their working side. For example, did the men have any hobbies? Did they like to cook, or play a sport, did they have hopes or plans for the future? I liked knowing what Spencer and Roarke in particular were like at work (dedicated and intelligent) but I really felt like there was a lot more to their characters that we didn’t have time to explore. The sex was steamy hot and I loved every moment of it. While they all jumped into bed very quickly I can’t fault the author for that considering the short length to the story. I also was impressed that the balance between plot and sex was kept very even and I felt neither part of the story suffered – both sides being well treated. Some readers mightn’t like that part of the plot was left deliberately hanging and not tied up neatly in a bow, but the romance and threesome was absolutely settled happily and this story was clearly marked as the first in a series, so I wasn’t too upset at the plot not being fully rounded out.

For a sexy paranormal story with a good plot and a fast pace, this is a great story. While I might have preferred a bit more depth to the three characters I felt this was an excellent first book in the series and I’d happily read more by this author.

In the tiny farming township of Epping, Linc has had a bumper crop of cucumbers this year – enough that he’s actually booked the County Extension office and hired the preservation room for a day. Pol, the distractingly handsome county worker is being visited by a new Doctor doing research in the small town. Linc can tell Marc and Pol are cooking something up, but he’s not quite sure what it is.

I found this to be a really fun short story. I loved the old-school, country town feel of it and found it to be quite realistic. Linc is pretty cautious – knowing that in the small town being gay is not necessarily a good thing or welcome from the few other residents. His reticence in saying anything, even when Pol and Marc lay out quite a few clues was completely understandable to my mind. The three men, however, are smoking hot once they finally get all on the same page and I really loved watching them all come together.

For such a short story quite a large amount of the story is the lead-up to the romance and introduction to the characters. I actually didn’t mind this as it really helped set the scene for me and it gave me a really good feel for all three men before they jumped to the sexy action – but I could understand if some other readers might feel the sexy-action part of the story got a bit of a short shrift because of this lead-up. The plot itself was fairly brief, but I found it quite interesting and while short – intelligent and logical.

All in all, I felt this was a really great short story and one that was deeply satisfying to read.
