It Started with a Cowboy by Jennie Marts – Spotlight and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Jennie Marts who is celebrating the upcoming release of It Started with a Cowboy, the third book in the Cowboys of Creedence series. Enter the Rafflecopter at the end of the post for a chance to win a copy of You Had Me at Cowboy, the second book in the series.

What will this cowboy risk for love?

Colt James is back home on the family ranch, and he’s done taking risks. A car accident ruined his shot at a professional hockey career and messed up his love life, and he’s not taking a chance on anything that seems too good to be true. Especially not on Chloe Bishop, his nephew’s irresistibly charming teacher and the one woman he can’t stop thinking about.

Chloe Bishop liked her life the way it was—orderly, structured and safe. Life goes from managed to messy when Colt talks her into helping him coach a hockey team of rowdy eight-year-olds. Being this close to the cowboy she’s crushing on is dangerous territory. But when a real enemy threatens Chloe, Colt will do anything to protect her. Even if it means risking himself—and his heart.

He passed her the towel, then turned his back. He should leave, he knew he should, but he couldn’t get his feet to move.

He heard the splash of water as she stood and stepped out of the tub. His eyes cut to the big mirror on the wall just in time to catch a quick glimpse of her wet, glistening body before she wrapped the towel around herself.

“You can turn around now,” she said, her voice timid and soft.

He slowly pivoted until he faced her again. It felt like something was happening here, and he didn’t want to ruin this chance. He opened his mouth to say something, anything. I like you. You’re beautiful. You have a great smile. I think you’re funny. Maybe best not to mention her sense of humor while she was standing practically naked in front of him.

Before Colt could think of the best thing to say to dazzle her with his wit and charm, his eyes fell on the top half of her arm and the row of purple bruises there. “Holy shit.” He crossed the bathroom and gingerly lifted her arm to examine the marks. Flares of rage sparked through him, and he wanted to kill Rank Johnson. “I will never let that bastard put his hands on you again,” he said through gritted teeth.

“I’m okay. They don’t hurt that bad. And it could have been worse. Much worse.”

She was right. Rank was as mean as they came, and she was lucky he hadn’t done worse to her or the kids. “He shouldn’t have touched you at all.”

“I know,” she whispered.

The scent of her skin surrounded him, and he was caught between wanting to wrap her in a blanket to protect her and wanting to pick her up and carry her to his bed. At this point, either option would work for him.

He lifted his hand, raising it to cup the side of her face. Tendrils of her hair tickled the back of his hand. “I’m so sorry this happened to you.”

She shook her head, just the slightest movement. Then she placed her hand on top of his and leaned her cheek into his palm. “I’m not. If it hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t be here with you now.”

This woman was going to flat–out kill him. He ached for her clear to the marrow of his bones. He leaned in, fully intent on capturing that pretty little mouth in a kiss, but he couldn’t bring himself to do it. He pulled back, shaking his head. “I like you, Chloe, but…”

Her face fell. Colt saw it and knew instantly that he’d blown it. Her shoulders shrank in, and she wrapped her arms around herself as if trying to cover the towel. “But not like that,” she finished for him. “I know. I get it.”

He shook his head. “No, I don’t think you do. I do like you, exactly like that. You’re all I’ve thought about for the past several months. And now you’re finally here, standing right in front of me, and I can’t do a damn thing.”

Her eyes widened, and she looked like she didn’t know if she should stay still or run—-like a dang deer caught in the headlights. A beautiful deer. He knew he was screwing this up. Of all the ways he’d imagined this moment would go, this hadn’t been one of them. He had to do something to save himself. As his dad used to say, it was time to fish or cut bait.

“Chloe, just listen. It’s not that I don’t want to…that I don’t want you. I do. And it’s killing me to say this, because I want you so bad, it freaking hurts. I want to kiss you and touch you. I want to take you to my bed and spend the whole day exploring every inch of your gorgeous body.” He let out a breath, his brows drawn together as if saying the words actually pained him. “But you’ve just been through this whole traumatic ordeal, and I want to give you time to heal. Someone hurt you, and I don’t want to be a jerk by not giving you the space you need. The last thing I want to do is make you feel uncomfortable. And I don’t want to take advantage of you.”

Q
Chloe stood perfectly still, as if her feet were glued to the tile floor. A cool drop of water dripped from a tendril of her hair and trickled down the front of her neck and into the terry cloth of the towel. Her skin was so hot that she wouldn’t have been surprised if the drop had evaporated into steam.

She tried to take in everything Colt had just said. She wasn’t sure she’d heard it all over the rushing in her ears that sounded after he’d said he liked her exactly like that and had been thinking about her for months. Then why had he pulled away when she’d kissed him at the rink? Why hadn’t he kissed her back?

Oh, for flint’s sake, what the French toast was she doing wasting time analyzing what happened a few days ago? It didn’t matter now. What mattered were the crystal–blue intensity of Colt’s eyes and the passion behind his words. He’d said he wanted her, said he liked her.

His words touched her, and she could appreciate the sentiment, and the chivalry, behind them. But she wasn’t a victim. She wasn’t a poor, helpless woman who needed space. A flaming–hot cowboy had just told her that he wanted to take her to his bed and explore her body. That was what she needed. Not space, not coddling. Despite the chill of the wet towel, her body was on fire and she wanted him, needed him.

Something inside her snapped, the deep part of her that had been fantasizing about this moment. The part that had been dreaming this could come true. And she knew in her heart this was the moment she’d been waiting for—-her chance to risk something, to be daring and fearless. She’d never wanted anything as much as she wanted Colt James, and this was her chance to grab him. No guts, no glory.

I can do this. I just need to pretend to be someone else. Someone who is brave and daring.

Her eye caught the swish of Agatha’s tail from where she lay next to the vanity, and Chloe knew that was the answer. She needed to think like a cat. Cats were bold and didn’t care what other people thought. They took what they wanted; they were adventurous and playful. She wrenched up her inner feline, brought her to life, and steeled herself to play.

I am woman, hear me roar. Or at least meow very courageously.

She reached for the knot securing the towel around her chest as she raised her chin and offered him her most seductive stare. “I like you too. And I love that you don’t want to push me, that you want to give me space, but I don’t need space. I need you. And I want you to take advantage of me. Right now.” She inhaled a breath as she took a step back and released the towel, letting it drop to the floor.

For close to three thousand years the imposing, impossibly handsome Santo Notte has fought in armies across the world and battled his own, more personal enemies. Of all the places he might expect to encounter his life mate, a quiet corner of upstate New York doesn’t seem likely. But as soon as he makes contact with history professor Petronella Stone, while hunting down a suspected rogue immortal, he knows that she will be the greatest adventure of his eternal life.

He expects her to be surprised, confused, even overwhelmed. What he doesn’t expect is that Pet has a secret history of her own. There’s no mistaking the mind-blowing, mutual pleasure they share. But as Pet struggles to protect her nephew from a danger lurking too close to home, Santo realizes there’s another threat to her safety—him. And claiming their passionate future will be impossible until he leaves his past behind, forever…

You can cross check with the doctors as this medication might affect cheapest cialis in canada them. If you are facing most of the cases, this disease is caused by some underlying conditions which need to be diagnosed without you having to see your prescription viagra prices doctor, or even anyone at all, face to face. This latest adventure in the Argeneau extended family is pure romance with a little conflict to spice things up and challenge their burgeoning relationship. There are also two extremely effective, nail-biting, don’t-bother-me-I’m-reading scenes that had my emotions in a vice grip. When you get to those parts, go somewhere quiet so you can FOCUS. I wish I had. Right in the middle of both of them, my family decided (how do they DO that?) to need this or that, or want to talk to me, or talk about supper. Noooo! I want to read! But they just don’t get it. When Ms. Sands writes drama and gritty scenes, they are so good, people who interrupt should be growled at.

I know that the page count seems high but I tell you, I never noticed. I read this book like it was only 150 pages. I couldn’t get enough. When it reached the romantic end, I was startled. It’s over already??? I read all those pages already? That’s the mark of a really good book.

I liked Santo and even though he went through torture for years, he’s mostly a well-adjusted guy. I say mostly because he has a few quirks he needs to work out. I really liked Pet, short for Petronella. Her family history is fascinating and I know, just KNOW that we’ll be seeing a book about her sister in the future. Same thing for her nephew, Parker. Pet’s whole family is part of the story and conflict and it’s a doozey.

Fans of the series know that some of the Argeneau family always pops up and this is no exception. Marguerite, her husband and a few others stop by to conduct a stake out and end up helping Santo and Pet when things get dicey as well as complicate the romance at the most embarrassing moments. They’re such a helpful family. Always listening in when the main characters wished they wouldn’t. Too funny,

The happy ever after is like nothing you’d expect. It starts off like a lot of dream sequences do, but there’s a significant twist that’s adorable and genius at the same time. The Zodiac comment just slayed me. I really, really like Pet.

The Trouble with Vampires focuses mostly on the romance and Ms. Sands does it justice. I heartily recommend this novel. I enjoyed it.

Carolyn Brown’s Real Life Inspiration for Writing THE PERFECT DRESS – Guest Blog + Giveaway

Carolyn Brown’s Real Life Inspiration for Writing THE PERFECT DRESS

Hello, everyone and thank you for inviting me to your site today!

My granddaughter is getting married this fall, and she’s not one of those size six girls who can walk into wedding dress store, try on a dozen dresses and find the perfect dress—especially when she has her heart set on a black lace dress for her wedding. When we began to shop for her dress, I wished for a custom wedding shop that catered only to women who wore a size fourteen or larger. So I created one called The Perfect Dress and set it in the little town of Celeste, Texas. This summer I plan to bring my old Singer sewing machine out of retirement, and make my granddaughter’s black lace wedding dress—just the way she and I will design it!

The Perfect Dress is not a real place so don’t go to the local doughnut shop in Celeste and ask about it, but the town, the characters and the shop were all very real to me while I was writing about it.

Speaking of characters let me introduce you to Mitzi. She’s and her two plus sized friends, Paula and Jody, have dreamed of putting in their own plus-sized wedding dress shop for years. Now it’s a reality. They’ve bought an old two story house at the edge of Celeste and hung out their shingle.

Jody is a thin vegetarian now, but when the girls were in high school, she was a big girl just like her friends. She’s living proof that a woman will do anything for love, but when love goes awry, she’s sure glad that she’s got Mitzi and Paula to support her.

Paula is carrying a big secret. The three women have shared everything since they were little children, but she can’t talk about her secret, not when both her friends are in the middle of drama themselves. She has to be the strong one to share Jody’s sorrow and Mitzi’s happiness.

Fanny Lou, Mitzi’s grandmother, is an eccentric old gal with lots of advice that she’s not one bit shy about spreading around. She’s the mother role for all of them, constantly popping into the shop with a box of doughnuts, or the local gossip.

Lately Mitzi has been feeling like maybe her ‘perfect family’ is missing someone… perhaps the perfect man. She hasn’t seen him since high school, but that doesn’t mean that Mitzi’s heart doesn’t go pitter-patter for this awesome single dad. Graham towers above Mitzi, who is almost six feet tall. He has twin girls, who are also plus sized. He feels the sparks, too, but questions whether Mitzi could ever love some big guy who already has teenage daughters.

There is definitely a gap between the teenager girls, who help out in the shop, and Fanny Lou, the granny, and the three best friends. But true friendship knows nothing about age—it’s love, support, and unflinching loyalty towards each other, no matter what the age.

In the small town of Celeste, Texas, Mitzi Taylor has never quite fit inside the lines. Nearly six feet tall, flame-haired, and with a plus-size spirit to match every curve, she’s found her niche: a custom wedding-dress boutique catering to big brides-to-be with big dreams. Taking the plunge alongside her two best friends, she’s proud they’ve turned The Perfect Dress into a perfect success.

Just when Mitzi has it all pulled together, Graham Harrison walks back into her life, looking for bridesmaid dresses for his twin daughters. A still-strapping jock whose every gorgeous, towering inch smells like aftershave, the star of all Mitzi’s high school dreams is causing quite a flush.

For Mitzi, all it takes is a touch to feel sparks flitting around her like fireflies. She can just imagine what a kiss could do. Graham’s feeling it, too. And he’s about to make that imagination of Mitzi’s run wild. Is it just a hot summer fling, or are Mitzi’s next designs for herself and seeing her own dreams come true?

Mitzi rushed back to the sewing room, where the hum of two sewing machines filled the air. “Graham Harrison just came in the shop to set up an appointment for his two daughters. He said they only live a few houses up the street from us. He looked like a bull in a china shop sitting on that pink sofa. And of course he didn’t even recognize me, but I sure knew him the minute I laid eyes on him.”

At the mention of that name from the past, work jolted to a halt.

“All the girls in high school swooned over him, including Mitzi, but she hasn’t told us if he’s still as sexy as he was back then.” Jody took a bowl of salad from the fridge along with a plate of vegetables that she stuck into the microwave to heat.

“He’s aged very, very well, and I’m having cookies,” Mitzi said.

“Smart girl,” Fanny Lou said. “Life is short. Eat dessert first. So you had a little crush on Graham?”

“Everyone did,” Mitzi answered.

“Not me. I was always in love with Lyle,” Jody said.

“Well, according to what I heard at the church bake sale today, Graham moved his daughters here to Celeste because they were being fat shamed down in Greenville. One of them knocked a girl on her butt, blacked both eyes, and bloodied her nose with one punch. It was the last day of school and they said they were going to suspend her for the first two weeks of next year for fighting,” Jody said.

“She should get a medal, not suspended,” Mitzi fumed.

Fanny Lou took a gallon jug of sweet tea from the fridge. “Who all wants a glass?”

Three hands went up.

She filled four glasses with ice and then tea and carried them to the table. “I remember when he went to work for his dad at the Cadillac dealership—right after he and Rita got married. His dad gave him a job on the lowest level, and he had to work his way up. Rita was furious because she thought they’d get a big house and a new Caddy every year. Stupid woman figured since his folks had money that he had an open bank account.”

Paula took the ham and cheese containers from the fridge while Mitzi pulled a loaf of bread from the cabinet. “You eating with us, Granny?”

“I’ll eat with you and Paula, but I don’t want any of that stuff Jody is having. I don’t eat fake meat. I’ll eat what I want and die when I’m supposed to. Slice some of them tomatoes I brought in here earlier. And I’d rather have bologna instead of ham and mustard instead of mayo,” Fanny Lou answered.

“Me, too,” Paula said. “I want one like hers.”

“I was thinking the same thing.” Mitzi set about making three sandwiches.

So Graham was divorced and raising girls on his own. Bless his heart for getting them away from a school that bullied them because of their size. Mitzi could relate to the girls. But then, so could Jody and Paula. She’d always figured that Jody adopted her own modern-day hippie style to combat those feelings of insecurity. Paula had retreated into superstition. Mitzi had just plowed her way through emotions and other kids, spending a lot of time in the principal’s office for fighting.

She pushed all that to the back of her mind, put the sandwiches on plates, and carried them to the table. “Y’all know that this job for Ellie Mae could turn into a big thing. I bet her older sister will be the maid of honor and her mother will want a fancy dress.”

“That’s what you’re in business for, isn’t it?” Fanny Lou said. “Man, this brings back memories. Friday night was bologna sandwich night when I was a kid.”

“Why?” Jody asked.

“Because Mama always cleaned house on Friday, and she didn’t have time to make a big meal,” Fanny Lou answered.

“Funny how an hour of beading takes forever and our noon hour goes so fast.” Jody pointed to the clock.

“Good Lord!” Fanny Lou finished off her sandwich and grabbed a cookie. “I’ve got an appointment with my CPA at one and it’s a fifteen-minute drive to Greenville. See you girls later. You have my permission to flirt with Graham, Mitzi.”

Mitzi’s cheeks began to burn. “I had a teenage crush on him. I’ve grown up since then.”

Fanny Lou winked as she headed for the door. “Paula, since you live with Mitzi, I’m putting you in charge of being sure she takes her birth control pills every morning.”

Mitzi felt even more heat in her cheeks. “Granny!”

“When you get old you get to say whatever the hell you want to.” Fanny Lou closed the door behind her.

Parents are supposed to protect their children. After a young girl disappeared, the question of where she went and what happened to her was impossible to ignore.

Wow, this was a scary read. Gregory was someone who’d grown up with certain Halloween customs that were so ordinary to him he barely even thought to mention them to the audience. I was glad this was explained so well because it made the rest of the bizarre events Gregory experienced much more understandable. There were a couple of times when I would have run screaming from the stuff he went through. Somehow, those scenes were even scarier than they might have otherwise been because of how differently I interpreted them when compared to Gregory’s much calmer response.

There was a little bit too much foreshadowing in this tale. As someone who has a lot of experience reading this genre, I was able to figure out several of the plot twists well ahead of time. I still enjoyed reading it quite a bit, but it would have been nice to have fewer clues about what was going to happen next. I would have given it a perfect rating if this had been the case.

The ending was fantastic. It answered all of my most important questions but still left me wishing there was more to it. I liked the fact that it left space for a sequel while still feeling like a satisfactory conclusion if Mr. Pongratz decides to leave this universe as is. This is exactly how open-ended stories should be written!

If you love Halloween and all things creepy, I’d definitely recommend giving Reaper: A Horror Novella a try.

Never Give Up!

At 8 years old, I fell in love with telling stories. By age 10, I decided I wanted to write novels for the rest of my life—so I started right away.

The problem was, when you’re 10, you don’t know how to accomplish a long-term goal. My writing method was simple: choose an idea, and write. See where it takes you. My record at the time was around 50 handwritten pages. That was an amazing feat, since I usually became bored by page 10. I hated the idea of a plan. I hated the idea of revising what I’d already written. I wanted to swim in the creative river, going with the flow.

I’d set those manuscripts—technically, I suppose that’s what they were—aside. But I wasn’t quitting. No, I was just “putting it on the shelf for later.” I don’t know if I ever returned to that proverbial shelf!

Long story short: I didn’t know how to complete a project that would take months.

So as a teenager, I gave up.

I didn’t stop writing. I taught myself screenwriting because I could focus on dialogue—the descriptions took too long, I figured. But in truth, it was laziness. So I turned to songwriting, because I could write a set of lyrics in 30 minutes.

But the dream of writing novels never died. Every few years, an inkling arose inside me. A desire to give it one more try, but I assumed that dream was dead. I jotted down story ideas, but I never acted on them. The notes were enough to tie me over.

Eventually, I couldn’t shake the desire to return to that original dream. It kept rising up in my heart. So, at 29 years old, after not even attempting it for 15 years, I decided to give it another try.

But something occurred during those latent years that I hadn’t expected. I’d worked in the IT field. I learned about databases and designed them. I wrote computer programming. I analyzed processes and managed projects that would take at least 9 months.

And in the IT world, I learned some interesting skills: How to identify logic errors. How to stick with a project, no matter how painful, because a client depended on my delivery. How to assemble a complex plan, identify milestones (critical moments along the way), and estimate time. I grew efficient, learned how to cut the fat from my time and reinvest it to accomplish more. I learned trial and error. I learned how to start strong, end strong … and keep plugging away during the remaining 90 percent of the way.

In short, I learned how to not give up—or how not to put a project on the shelf.

What if I treated a novel like an IT project? I wondered. What if I developed a timeline and identified my milestones so I could track progress? What if, as I did during process analysis, I developed a 10,000-foot view, a 500-foot view, and a ground-level view?

Those turned out to be the keys to completing a novel. Once I had a plan, I kept moving forward, whether I felt excited or blasé. And I was scared to death I’d “put it on the shelf!” But I realized that, once you have a plan, if you keep showing up, it’s a matter of mathematics: 1+1+1. If you keep showing up, you will reach the end.

Nine months later, I had the finished, final draft of The Landing, the first novel I’d ever written.

I never took a course in creative writing. But God wired each of us differently, and the skills I lacked wouldn’t be taught in a writing class. It required working with computers, machines that don’t negotiate with you or meet you halfway. You need to find a solution within their framework. And a solution always showed up.

If you have a dream but don’t know how to get there, try putting together a plan. Try doing something, one step at a time. And if you feel stuck, all is not lost! Your answer might show up unexpectedly.

If you need encouragement along the way, please consider reading my nonfiction book, 8 Reasons Your Life Matters. That isn’t intended as a book plug. I wrote the book to encourage people when they feel down.

But this one is a book plug: If you enjoy sweet romantic comedies with true-to-life characters and a lot of heart, I hope you will consider giving my latest novel, Mona Lisas and Little White Lies, a shot. You can find out more about all my books at www.johnherrick.net or my socials.

Ryder rubbed his eyes. No wonder they felt so sore—one glance at his watch told him it was almost two in the morning. Although he could still hear well, the loud music seemed to have whittled his sensitivity to about 85 percent, as though he’d wrapped his eardrums in cotton.

After dinner, he’d allowed Chase to drag him to a nightclub, which was where Ryder had last seen his friend before returning to the hotel alone by way of a taxi. They would find each other before the art show opened that morning at ten o’clock. Chase might push his limits, but he was never late.

Now, upon entering the hotel, he found the lobby empty except for a concierge at the front desk. The room’s silence rivaled that of a funeral parlor. Ryder made a beeline for the elevator bank and pushed the round button to hail a ride upstairs. With a glance around the corner, he found the doors to the art show shut and locked. He detected no pulsating rhythms, which meant the wedding reception had ended, as well.

Ryder heard the elevator tone—followed by the swish of fabric coming from his left. He halted. Listened.

Another swish, like the chiffon of a bridesmaid’s dress.

When the elevator doors opened, Ryder wasn’t standing in front of them. With one eyebrow furrowed and his ear cocked upward, he eased toward the far end of the elevator bank, then peered around the corner.

More rustling of fabric, then tiny sobs. Step by step, he followed the sounds. On his right, he noticed someone had left open the door to a dark room. Another sob came from inside that room. A female voice.

“Hello?” Ryder whispered. His eyes adjusted to the dark as he brushed his hand along the wall in search of a light switch. At last, he located the switch and flipped it on.

The room was small. He wandered to a far corner, where a desk topped with random clutter sat, a four-star hotel’s answer to a dumping ground. When he peeked behind the desk, he discovered a young woman. Weeping, she sat crumpled on the floor with her back against the desk. A peach-colored rose trampled by life.

Heading to London to compile research for her novel, Nicole is bowled over by Reece as they both run to catch their flight. Joining him in first class, she discovers an attraction that will carry her through months of romance and heartbreak, especially when his brother steals her manuscript.

Reece is used to being in the camera’s spotlight, but tries to keep his personal life private, which becomes hard for him to do when he falls for Nicole. Will he be able to protect her from the bright lights of his fame, or will he step out of the light and be the man they both wish he could be?

This story may be about an accidental love affair but the pulling on my heartstrings wasn’t an accident at all. This was an emotional story that was well written. It was obvious to me that a lot of thought was put forth in developing quality characters that I found to be relatable. I especially enjoyed the well crafted drama with all the unexpected plot twists that captured my interest from beginning to end. I’m not sure how realistic it all was but that isn’t a huge criteria for me as long as it’s plausible which I believe it could be.

The moral of this story is to not procrastinate. Typically when one procrastinates there is a negative outcome. In this story the heroine, Nicole, demonstrates a positive outcome from her procrastination for she would never have had met the hero, Reece. Though I’d like to point out there are different reasons for a person to procrastinate. It’s one thing if it’s because of laziness or lack of desire. It’s another thing when a person procrastinates because of lack of confidence as it was in this heroine’s case. I personally struggled with Nicole’s lack of self worth. At times her insecurities led to me feeling irritated with her instead of sympathetic, especially when it caused the romance to be on again and off again. However, that is my personal hang up. I will admit that the HEA was worth the emotional roller coaster I endured.

I did love Nicole’s quick wit though. She always had the last word with a quick come back that made me laugh. The chemistry between Nicole and Reece was so hot that I’m surprised the pages didn’t naturally combust. I definitely wasn’t feeling the cold weather outside.

An Accidental Love Affair was a fun contemporary read.

Breezy Simmons was born into a ruthless motorcycle club—and now that she’s out, she’s never going to be that girl again. But when her past catches up with her, Breezy must go to Sea Haven to seek out the man who almost destroyed her. The man who chose his club over her and left her feeling used and alone.

As vice president of Torpedo Ink, Steele is ride or die for the brothers he lived through hell with. He never thought he’d find something as pure as his feelings for Breezy, or that keeping her safe would mean driving her away with cruel words that turned her love for him to ash.

Now, Steele won’t let her walk away twice. He’ll do whatever it takes to make Breezy his woman again—especially when he learns the real reason she came to him for help, and that the stakes are higher than he ever could have imagined…

I’m hooked. I mixed up Ms. Feehan’s, Torpedo Ink novels with her Shadow series and I ended up reading a book I didn’t expect. This is the second book in the series and I didn’t feel lost because I hadn’t read the first. When this novel was through putting me through an emotional wringer, I found I have to spend more money, not only on the previous book but the end of the last Sea Haven series where Torpedo Ink was introduced. Like I said, I’m hooked.
This generic version of sildenafil citrate solved a major cialis without prescription pdxcommercial.com issue of patients through its affordable prices. You saw the page count of this book, right? I read it in one day. One day. Stayed up until 1 A.M. to do it and yes I was dog-tired the next day at work. It was worth it.

If a reader is used to the action/violence of the vampires with her Carpathians, the style in this series blows it through the roof. Fortunately, Ms. Feehan only shares enough for a reader to get that lump in the stomach feeling, the horror and uncomfortable twitching that went on with me when Steele shared with Breezy just what he went through growing up and being groomed to be the ultimate assassin in Russia, for Russia. Understand that it’s not gratuitous that the author put this stuff in there – a reader needs to know the whys and hows that created such a dysfunctional, messed up and anti-social anti-hero hero. Yes, anti-hero hero. Why? Because Steele and his MC family do things that are not nice, legal or normal and would have every legal agency after them should it be known just who and what they were. And yet, these men and women of Torpedo Ink need saving the most. They need strong women/partners who will stand up to them while giving them what they need to heal emotionally and mentally.

I didn’t list the subject matter that made this book fall into the erotic side of things because not all of it was ‘bedroom door wide open for everyone to experience, and hey! Let’s participate! never mind see’ – yes, the door is open, but it’s not solidly voyeuristic, or exhibitionist or classified as BDSM. It’s mentioned but not an active part of the sex between Steele and Breezy. It’s backdrop. Sort of. Steele is incredibly dominant and when Ms. Feehan described for a reader the oral part of Breezy with Steele’s …. steel, it was so graphic and clear, and yes well written, that for the first time, I could visualize just what actually happens when a heroine is mouthy with the hero. I’m not a fan of that stuff but I now have a clearer understanding of the process. It actually sounds like a lot of work! But if you love someone, and Breezy most definitely loves Steele, every dark and naughty, scary and strong part of him, it fits.

As for the villains of the novel, there are a lot, and every single one of them gets what they deserve. Again, it’s rather violent but the crimes the bad guys perpetrate on the innocent are so heinous, only people the caliber of Torpedo Ink can exact a fitting level of justice. I appreciated it greatly when the author had Breezy, and that means the reader too, leave the scene before it became too shocking and ghastly. However, a reader has no problem imagining the rest. That was enough for me.

Another thing I found fascinating was the terminology. I’m starting to see so many books out there that I think it’s become a genre – MC romances. MC is Motorcycle Club and I am so glad that the author included a glossary at the end. I figured things out mostly by inference, but it was nice to have a solid explanation. I just wish I’d known about the glossary beforehand.

There is no doubt that Christine Feehan is a talented and creative word artist, but she pushed the envelope farther than I expected. Yet, she is so professional that I will continue to read about this new world she’s created, even if it seems darker than her Dark series. I like the characters she’s introduced me to and I found the men and women of Torpedo Ink worth the effort of saving. It’s the ‘how’ of it that fascinates me. Breezy is perfect for Steele but that doesn’t mean it’s easy between them. It’s not. There’s a history and a lot of water under the bridge that they have to reconcile in order for them to have a future. They are successful and it’s their journey that engaged me, gripped me and had my emotions bouncing like a pogo stick. Very cool.

So, in conclusion, if a reader is into gritty, no apologies alpha men with dark, tragic pasts with the strength to face their demons and pulverize them, then I suggest really giving Vengeance Road a try. I totally recommend it.

Top Ten Tuesday: The Maine

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday!  This week’s topic is Audio Freebie so I’m taking a break from books to discuss music!  Whether I’m cleaning, cooking, driving, or going for a run, I love listening music.  Like a really great book, music can be a mood booster, calming, or energizing.  I debated on how to approach this topic.  Should I list my ten favorite bands, albums, songs?  Then I had an unusual experience, and I knew I had to share it.  So today before I get to my list, I’m going to talk about an amazing band called The Maine.

A couple years ago I was at a concert, and The Maine were the opening act.  They put on such a great show.  I was immediately hooked.  Their newest album is being released on Friday, March 29th.  I pre-ordered it last month, which speaks to how much I love this band.  I’m very particular about my music, and I never pre-order anything.  However, I have a lot of faith in this band.

A couple weeks ago shortly after putting my kids to bed, my phone rang.  It was a restricted number, and I don’t normally answer my phone if I don’t know the number.  However, I picked it up without thinking.  It was Garrett Nickelsen, the bass player for The Maine…..  He was calling to thank me for pre-ordering their album!  I know The Maine does things like this.  I’ve seen videos on you tube of them calling fans, but never expected to be lucky enough to get a call.  The conversation went something like this.

Garrett: Is this (my real name, but I’m not sharing that here 🙂 )?

Me: Yes

Garrett: This is Garrett from The Maine, and you pre-ordered our album.

Me: (freaking out inside but staying calm outwardly) Yes I did.

Garrett: I just wanted to call and say thanks.  We really appreciate it.

Me: Yeah, I’m really looking forward to it.  I’ve enjoyed the songs you’ve released so far. (I’m so not cool)

Garrett: So how has your day been?

Me: It’s been pretty good.  Both my kids have colds so I’ve been dealing with that. (Seriously?! Thanks the best thing I can think to say when talking to a member of such an awesome band?!)

Garrett: Oh yeah, cold and flu season is terrible.  Hope they feel better soon.

Me: Thanks. (still kicking myself for not thinking of something better to say but also thinking how nice Garrett is being)

Garrett: Well, thanks again for your support, and I hope to see you out on tour this year.

Me: I already have tickets to one of the shows! (Finally I have something cool to say!)

Garrett: Awesome!  Thanks!  See you out on tour then.  Have a good night!

Me: You too, and thanks for calling!

I disconnected the call and promptly freaked out. (and thought of so many better things I could have said)

So today in honor of The Maine being such an amazing band and so great to their fans, I’m going to list some of my favorite songs by The Maine.  The titles are linked to you tube.  I recommend using earbuds if you’re at work as some of the lyrical content might not be appropriate for that setting.

What Would I Tell a New Author?

Seems like it was about the same time Moses was leaving Kemet-Egypt that this writer was ‘new’. We writers are solitary modified nerds. We change the world – we handle the spotlight as part of our marketing, but all said and done, we like our solitude; i.e., peace of mind. Without it the creative juices are sidelined and crippled.

MAIN STUFF

 Write it. Edit it and edit it again. There’s no such thing as being done, but there is a caveat – one can over-edit and change good to pitiful.

 Don’t say NO to the person in the mirror.

 When words and actions don’t match…don’t sign any contract with anyone like that. Don’t be professionally associated with them – the marketing-publishing world is small – everyone talks.

 Don’t publish excerpts of your unpublished works on the Internet. That’s public domain, and most publishers usually won’t consider it after your manuscript has been published in any form.

PITFALLS

 Don’t throw anything away, including any scribbles/ideas/deletions, AND keep your backups current.

 Trust editors you know. Those you trust, listen to them. That doesn’t mean do what they say…but consider it. I shy away from editing others’ works—their work comes from their structuring of tales and characters, etc. etc. I’ve no access to those juices. I like editing my own work – sometimes as much as 12-20 times with each title.

 Watch out for quickie critiques from those who just talk instead of actually sitting down and doing the work of writing.

 Use rejections as personal opportunities to learn – especially from editors/publishers you trust. They’re rare as oak trees on the moon. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it—quality has always been rare.

 Ignore putdowns about “Have you published?” It’s jealousy and ego trouble. Are you an author? If you’ve written something you’re an author!

 Have a marketing budget. You’ve done the work. You’ve edited it; made it shine. Crow about yourself BUT DO NOT put others down. If you achieve success as a writer, you have an obligation to help other new authors.

 In presentations and Q&A audience participation panels, I-I-I-I and me-me-me are ego sputter and self-serving parades. Answer questions from the audience when asked, but if you are fortunate enough to be invited to participate on a panel, don’t use it to simply talk about yourself. For example, I often get asked about where I’ve taught/faculties/multiple postdoctoral degrees/commission officer military services, Dead Gold being Book 4 in a Moccasin Hollow Mystery Series and how I did so-and-so which I am happy to answer but only if asked. As writers, it is not our talents and gifts that make us what we are BUT how we use them. Runaway ego-putdowns ain’t cuttin’ it.

 Love your work. Never quit writing. An author is a loner in a room full of paper – ain’t it fun!

The dazzling lure of Olympic gold fame is a spotlight glare hotter than any fifteen minutes of fame.

During plans for a cross-country ski vacation, Aspen Police Department Criminal Investigation Division Detective David “Spinner” Krespinak and SEAL-bud Craige Ingram are ensnared by glamour, upmarket glitz and bling, and greed in the deadly champagne powder world of a money-gets-you-anything high-country ski-mecca. Body parts start turning up in the most unlikely places. As the two friends start their investigation, A hornets nest of the local elite do not want the publicity. For good reason it seems, they may be part of the mystery of bodies and body parts piling up at the morgue.

The closer they get to the killer the more confused they become. Who is behind the murders and mutilation? The list of suspects grows as they close the net on the killer.

The tender underbelly of Aspen is not what it seems. It is a raw open sore that oozes blood, drugs, and murder.

Spinner staggered the clutch and gear-shift. Kept his foot off the brakes as his vehicle slewed in the razor-edged chunky refreeze of the deep off-road ruts until coming to a stop. Killed the motor, and set the hand brake. Gusts of wind sliced at a square jaw on his devil-may-care rugged face as he climbed out and turned up the collar on his sheepskin coat. Big thick champagne-powder snowflakes clung for a moment to dust his dark hair, and just as quick blew-gone in the capricious strong up-slope drafts. He ducked under the fluttering yellow plastic ribbon with its black letters: POLICE LINE—DO NOT CROSS.

The charred black remains of the older model sedan slumped in a sooted blotched circle surrounded by undulating pristine white and candlestick-caked trees. It spoke loud and clear to Spinner—the burn had continued for some time after the storm. Wheel rims, frame, heat-crazed windows were still smoldering from hood to trunk.

As he walked toward her, salt-and-pepper-haired Pitkin County Medical Examiner-Coroner Candelaria Lopez didn’t have to look up. She knew the cadence of Spinner’s footsteps. “Looks like we have us a bungled hurried torch job.”
