Justin is a Mixed Martial Arts instructor who has been enlisted by the ruling Mohawk Matriarchs to help protect the most vulnerable women in their community. Since then he has devoted his life to empowering women.

Marie is a free-spirited aircraft mechanic determined to live life to the fullest. And she’s Justin’s student.

Justin is the best martial arts instructor Marie has ever had. He is also the subject of her raunchy sexual fantasies. Unfettered by the traditional roles of women in society, she’s unafraid to show Justin what she wants, but he’s having none of it.

After Justin saves her from being attacked, Marie realizes her feelings go deeper than sexual attraction alone. She knows that Justin is reluctant to have sex with a student but pursues him brazenly nonetheless. But she doesn’t know that Justin is guarded for another reason: he is able to call up the Shadow of the Leopard, a mysterious force that once led him to kill two cops.

As the attraction between them intensifies, Justin is forced to make a decision: keep walking the tightrope he is on, or surrender to Marie and risk putting the school in jeopardy or even worse….

In this short story we get to meet Marie and Justin, two people who love to do martial arts. Justin owns his own martial arts business where Marie is a student. He teaches a self-defense class for women, along with teaching the police. Marie is one of his best students and the connection between them is hot and fast. He does have one fear that holds him back, he has a wild panther that lives inside him that can be extremely violent if let loose.

I like how Marie is such a spunky character, strong and more then capable to take care of herself. It shows that women can be as strong as a man. I also fell in love with Justin. I would learn from him anytime.

The romance between is so thick you could cut it with a knife. One thing that is keeping them apart is Justin’s morals, he does not sleep with his students. I appreciate that line of reasoning, even though it drives poor Marie crazy. She wants him so bad that she is at the end of her rope. She is a stubborn woman though, and with help from her friend Monica she bags her man.

One thing that I did not like is the descriptions of the characters’ bountiful anatomy. To me those are unnecessary details that didn’t add anything to the story and really brought me out of the story.

I enjoyed the two romances between them, and wish the book was a little longer so we could see their relationship develop. This is a lovely book to snuggle up with in winter. If you love Martial Arts, strong spunky women, and a man that is that every woman would love, this book will work for you.

What’s a future duke to do when the most unsuitable woman possible captures his heart?

Eden had tried to avoid even a hint of scandal her whole life.

Plowing headlong into the Marquis of Sterling and dropping eggs on his boots wasn’t the most foolish thing Eden Haverden had ever done. Imprudently agreeing to take the charming rogue home when his horse went lame wasn’t either. But reluctantly accepting Chester’s invitation to stay the night at his familial estate after she nearly drowned? Yes, that assuredly was a rash decision and invited utter ruin. So why doesn’t she listen to her common sense?

The DeCourcy sins have haunted Chester his entire life.

Determined to create a new legacy for the tainted duchy, Manchester’s every action and decision are governed by diligence and discipline. A man of reason and purpose, he should not be distracted by the wholly unsuitable Eden Haverden. Not only is she the illegitimate offspring of his father’s arch enemy, she’s also the sister of the man who’d killed his brother. Why then, can’t he resist the powerful connection between them?

Can Chester convince Eden to put aside their families’ feud and trust him with her heart and l

Manchester (Chester), Marquis of Sterling is dragged back home as he was advised that his father was in very poor health. He has a volatile relationship with is father, since his father blames Manchester for the death of his older son, Byron. While wasting time at the inn, he literally runs into a young woman who takes his breath away. Eglantina, who goes by her middle name, Eden. She is the bastard daughter of a local gentry man, and doesn’t fit in any of the different classes; she is not quite a noble nor is she a commoner. Quite the pair, huh?

I absolutely loved the character of Eden, she is quirky and does not follow common mores of dress. She has such a heart of gold, as she takes in any stray that walks her way. She is also such a strong character, ignoring the normal way a woman is supposed to act in this time period. Chester is also a wonderful character, as he fights the temper and imprudence that haunts his family. They have not had good reputation in quite a time, and his father is not helping the situation.

The author does a great job of showing the difference between Chester and his elder brother Byron. He also had the strength to defy his father and marries for love instead of following his father’s plan. I love the interactions between Eden and Chester, there is passion and tenderness. He does everything he can to help Eden and her mother, taking them in and caring for them and the the animals that Eden owned. The passion was sweet and heated at the same time, which makes Eden fight harder. She does not want to end up as her mother. Chester is working hard to show is a different type of man.

The only thing that I wish could have been done is to make the courtship a little longer. They meet, fall in love and the next thing you know they are living together.

All in all, this was a great read with great characters and a wonderful plot line. I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re drawn into their world like I was and felt what the two lovers felt, too.

When Ace leaves home to spend the summer in Cherokee, North Carolina the last thing she expects to find is a boyfriend until she meets Cherokee Tribe member John Spears. As Ace and John’s friendship blossoms, they find their life experiences mirror each other and they fall in love. Despite hurdles thrown by well-meaning family members and jealous frenemies, the star-crossed lovers remain committed to their mutual belief that the universe has drawn them together. However, when Ace sends John a strange text and then suddenly disappears, the two must rely on their trust in each other to save both their lives and their love.

I have so much I want to say about Cherokee Summer that I’m overwhelmed as to where to begin and wish I could just say “just read it”. Similar to Nike’s motto “Just do it”.

Holy Mackerel, this book packed a punch. If a reader likes to be blown away with an unexpected surprise within a book then this story delivered, at least it did for me. There certainly was a plot thread that was unpredictable. I’m not at all sure how realistic it was given their ages but it left a “wow” impression on me.

I grew up watching Western movies and Western TV shows therefore I’ve always had the fantasy of falling in love with a forbidden Native American tribe member only for us to live our happily ever after.

I got to live my fantasy through Ace, the heroine, and John the hero. The author did a great job making their love seem real, like it was meant to be, and heartwarming.

There was depth to this story with multiple layers with intertwining characters. I was fully invested with everything that was going with each character. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. It was one of those, “it’s late and I’ll just finish the paragraph. No, wait, there’s only 3 pages left in the chapter. I’ll just finish the chapter.” Then I’d look so see how short the next chapter was. I had a hard time putting the book down.

There was drama in Ace’s family that she was dealing with and John was dealing with his own family drama and then together as a couple they had “hurdles thrown by well-meaning family members and jealous frenemies”. Those “frenemies” added to the suspense throughout the book.

The only thing that kept me from rating this a Best Book was the ages of the hero and heroine. I had to mentally block the fact that they were eighteen out of my head. Nowhere was I prepared to learn that. I just couldn’t accept that. I’m forty seven years old and I have an eighteen year old son. I would have been more comfortable with the entire book if they were juniors in college. Perhaps on the reservation on internships. All I’m saying is the age didn’t work for me. Nowhere did it say it was a young adult romance. If it did I woundn’t have chosen to read it. That is my personal hiccup.

In conclusion, Cherokee Summer was outstanding in the grand scheme of things. I was entertained, heart warmed and found a new author that I’d like to read more books from.

A Note from Dane Bainbridge: an Introduction
(written after the events of Beyond Every Mirror)

I’m not exactly what one would call a great writer, but since the first story of my adventures came out in the book, Beyond Every Mirror (which, on my manager’s insistence, has been written and marketed as fiction), I was asked to write this note. I have no idea what to say, and some say I ramble so I will try not to do that. You can read the book if you want the details. Haha. The only thing I usually write is songs. Yeah, I’m a famous singer. I also play piano and keyboards in the band. We are what I call a Symphonic hard rock band. The only other writing I have done was when a friend told me I should start my own blog. So I did.

Unfortunately, most of the posts in my blog aren’t even written by me. When I was kidnapped into the Dimension behind mirrors (Mikaire), I kinda had to stop writing in it. Not only because I had to leave my laptop behind, but because, well, there are no laptops in Mikaire. There’s not much of anything except ancient and anachronistic buildings and foliage. And the people… blood drinkers. I call them vampires, though they don’t call themselves that. Not that I am much into technology anyway, never have been, except where music is concerned, because, well, I have to be. It’s my career. It makes sense, though. Most of my lives were lived long before technology. Yep, I remember them all now. Who knew reincarnation was a real thing… except it seemed to be only reserved for me! Lucky me. I guess I am, for I never would have met my beautiful wife if I hadn’t been.

To continue on, I am married to a beautiful ginger-haired woman who happens to come from Mikaire. I know, it’s all so crazy and if it had not happened to me I wouldn’t have believed it. Meirah and I are happily awaiting the birth of our first child. The worst part about that is, because she conceived while in her home Dimension of Mikaire, it will take close to 5 years in this Mortal Dimension (as it’s called by the others) for her to give birth. The time variation between Mikaire and here is vast. One year there is 32 years here. Enough time for me to live yet another life, become an adult, then be dragged back for sacrifice. Ugh. So many times I died. But I didn’t fight it too much. After all, if I lived, my love and her world would perish. It’s all pretty nuts actually.

I’m not allowed to say much about the events that occurred because it’s all in the book. But, as almost a year has gone by, I admit I have been having nightmares. My birthday approaches (December 24th) and I fear being taken yet again. Especially since I’m happy now. Ok, nothing’s perfect. But I have my lovely wife, my band and a child on the way. And yet, the fear of having to return only to be tortured and sacrificed weighs heavily on my mind. Much to my wife, Meirah’s dismay, I have begun once again to drink rather heavily. That’s my vice. I love wine and rum. I have a wine cellar beneath my mansion in Aiken, SC (USA).

I haven’t a huge amount to say, as like I said before, I am not a writer of words unless they pertain to the lyrics of a song. If you have a burning desire to talk to me or ask questions, you can email me at danesdarkmyst@gmail.com. You can bug the author of the book, too, if you wish (hahaha). I think her email is christine@christinechurch.net. Don’t bug her too much, however. She’s a nice lady who reminds me a bit of my mother. She was chosen to write my story because she’s a writer who’s been at it for decades! I think she did a pretty good job.

That’s all for now, I guess. Thanks to all who listen to our music and read this author’s books. None of us artists could make it without fans!

With Love,
Dane Bainbridge

Prepare for a new world, and a new Dimension.

Dane and Meirah are back, but they are not alone…

An enemy from their past has returned and is determined to get revenge on those he felt betrayed him and destroyed his life, his home. You’ve seen Mikaire, now enter Almareyah, where even a mere step into a puddle of water can mean torture, agony, and death.

After a fight separates Dane & Meirah, they discover their enemy has survived the death of Mikaire and he is out for revenge. And this time he has powers – wizard powers! Creating his own Dimension in the folds of time, he is unstoppable in his quest to make Meirah his Queen and Dane his blood slave.

Though this is Book Two, there is enough information to understand the plot without having read Book One.

Prelude

Dane Bainbridge died under the heat of a desert sun. At the moment of death blackness surrounded him and the pain of life vanished. Then came the light. Beautiful azure bound his body-less mind. And everywhere flowed water.

Peace.

All the troubles, tortures, fear and worry drifted away on the tides. He could have remained there forever. But soon there was something else. Red. Just a color, but not a color. Hair. Red hair. A word.

Meirah.

The word drifted through his unconscious mind, but he didn’t know what it meant.

Kaeplan.

Yes, that was a name he knew all too well. Kaeplan had killed him. They’d been fighting for centuries. And it was Dane who lost in the end.

But, if Kaeplan was here, then he must be dead too. But, where were they? Heaven? Hell? Or some other place? Hell. If such a place existed, they both deserved its fiery end.

So, even those from other dimensions went to Hell. But then…what was Hell but another Dimension in the folds of time. Just as Mikaire had been. Just as in Almareyah.

Someone was speaking. He couldn’t yet hear the words. He blinked open his eyes. That’s when he saw it. Just a sliver at first, but it grew into a ball of bright white light. Not Heaven, for if he had landed there, Bruce would be chastising him for his disbelief.

A face came into focus then, blocked out the light. She was beautiful with long brown hair that perfectly framed a sculpted face, high cheekbones and big brown eyes. She drew closer to him, and behind her he saw another. Both scantily clad.

As beautiful women closed in around him, Dane reveled in the paradise of his own thoughts.

A dream.

He tried to move, to reach to them. But the pain returned. His back aflame, his arms ached, legs stiff and sore.

Hell hath no fury… And the blackness returned once again.

Five Things You Didn’t Know About Renaissance Italy by Crystal King – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes >Crystal King who is celebrating today’s release of her latest book The Chef’s Secret.

Five Things You Didn’t Know About Renaissance Italy

I write novels about Italy’s unsung culinary heroes, people who left behind rich legacies that transformed Italian cooking in eras past, laying the foundation for the foods we know and love today. My first novel, Feast of Sorrow, is about the man whose name graces the cover of the oldest known cookbook. Apicius, a wealthy gourmand, gave us the first recipes we have for things like foie gras, french toast and fried dough. And my second novel, The Chef’s Secret, is about Bartolomeo Scappi, who was really the first ever celebrity chef–revered the world over for his cooking. His L’Opera di Bartolomeo Scappi, published in 1570, contains over 1,000 recipes, including some of the earliest recipes for tortellini, fried chicken, and zabaglione.

Writing has helped me satisfy some of my never-ending curiosity about the world of the past. My passion for research is probably one of the biggest reasons that I started writing historical fiction. There is so much to be discovered within the layers of the past. So much so that one of the biggest challenges I have faced in writing is deciding which fascinating (or strange!) factoids to impart to my audience.

Today I’m sharing five of the most interesting tidbits I learned about Renaissance Italy while researching The Chef’s Secret, each of which can be found woven into the pages of the novel.

1. The Great Comet of 1577 streaked across the skies of Europe and was visible from November 13, 1577 to January 26, 1578, a period of 74 days. In Ferrara, an architect, Pirro Ligorio, described the phenomenon: “the comet shimmering from a burning fire inside the dazzling cloud.”

2. Without the internet (can you even imagine?!), Romans aired their political and social grievances by pasting poems and epigrams at one of 6 ancient “talking statues.” Sometimes one statue would even rebuke the commentary of another, creating a back and forth between different parts of the city. There were several talking statues, including Marforio, a huge statue of the river god Oceanus, in the Capitoline Museum. The most famous, Pasquino, is housed in a little piazzetta off of Piazza Navona, and it is still used today to express the opinions of the people, though authorities have erected a plastic stand on which people can post their notes.

3. Turkeys found their way to Italy during the Renaissance, but it wasn’t until the latter half of the century that they were deemed suitable for eating. When Spanish and Italian explorers first brought the birds to Europe from the New World, they were regarded as a beautiful and strange oddity, and many nobles kept them as pets or gave them to others as extravagant gifts. Scappi’s cookbook contains the first European recipes for preparing turkey. The sculpture you see here, by Italian sculptor Giambologna, is from 1560.

4. Even if you haven’t been to Venice, you have likely seen pictures of the famous Rialto bridge. Prior to 1591, it was a wooden drawbridge that could be lifted up to let larger ships pass in the canal below. Being made of wood, it was prone to catching on fire, or collapse (!) and finally after rebuilding it dozens of times over the centuries since it was first built in 1181, Venice built the beautiful white stone bridge you see today.

5. Eight popes reigned during the 49-year period in which The Chef’s Secret takes place (1528-1577), including Pope Marcellus II who ruled for only 22 days before suffering a stroke and slipping into a coma at the age of 53.

Of course, I had a lot of fun figuring out how to thread the needle of my story with these facts to create The Chef’s Secret!

A captivating novel of Renaissance Italy detailing the mysterious life of Bartolomeo Scappi, the legendary chef to several popes and author of one of the bestselling cookbooks of all time, and the nephew who sets out to discover his late uncle’s secrets—including the identity of the noblewoman Bartolomeo loved until he died.

When Bartolomeo Scappi dies in 1577, he leaves his vast estate—properties, money, and his position—to his nephew and apprentice Giovanni. He also gives Giovanni the keys to two strongboxes and strict instructions to burn their contents. Despite Scappi’s dire warning that the information concealed in those boxes could put Giovanni’s life and others at risk, Giovanni is compelled to learn his uncle’s secrets. He undertakes the arduous task of decoding Scappi’s journals and uncovers a history of deception, betrayal, and murder—all to protect an illicit love affair.

As Giovanni pieces together the details of Scappi’s past, he must contend with two rivals who have joined forces—his brother Cesare and Scappi’s former protégé, Domenico Romoli, who will do anything to get his hands on the late chef’s recipes.

With luscious prose that captures the full scale of the sumptuous feasts for which Scappi was known, The Chef’s Secret serves up power, intrigue, and passion, bringing Renaissance Italy to life in a delectable fashion.

Forty-three days after he first laid eyes upon the most beautiful girl in the world, Bartolomeo had the good fortune to overhear the maids talking about a girl at the palazzo. Two of the serving maids huddled in the pantry near his post where he was prepping nightingales for the cena. When they mentioned the dress she had worn the night before, Bartolomeo realized the principessa was the object of their admiration.

One of the maids was a thin slip of a girl who served the cardinale’s sister. The other was a young woman who had caught his fancy for a time the summer before, but soon bored Bartolomeo with her empty gossip.

“She’s here from Roma,” the first said, awe in her voice. They talked of the girl’s extraordinarily wealthy family, of her famed dressmaker, and of how long it took to wrangle her curls each morning.

When they said her name, Bartolomeo had to put his knife down for fear of cutting himself. Oh, to know her true name! Happiness filled him like a carafe of fine wine. Her name, he thought, was like the taste of strawberries sprinkled with sugar. It was like the summer sun touching the petal of a freshly bloomed flower. That evening, when he gazed out his little garret window, he wished he could shout her name across the rooftops, but he could never say it aloud. To do so was too dangerous, for her and for him. He would take a thousand lashings for his Stella [Author’s note, this is a pet name that Bartolomeo has for her], but he could not bear to have her come to harm.
The next morning, Stella stopped Bartolomeo in the loggia. The sky was bright and the October air was still gentle and warm. He was readying to leave the palazzo to go to market when she approached. He was so startled to see her there he stopped in his tracks, mouth agape.

The principessa was radiant in a red velvet gown, her hair piled high upon her head. Her beauty was staggering, her skin so clear, her cheeks ruddy and fresh. What a sight he must seem in comparison, with his own hair a tussle of wild waves, a grease stain adorning one sleeve. He hadn’t bathed, and he was certain he smelled too much like onions and ham.

She recognized his discomfort and giggled, in a way that immediately eased his fear. She gently touched his arm with one hand, and with the other she pressed a piece of paper into his palm. “What is your name?”

He looked around to see who might be witnessing the exchange, but there were only a couple of gardeners in the vicinity, none of whom paid them any mind. “Bartolomeo,” he said, gathering courage.

She released his hand and shared her own name. Bartolomeo’s heart sang as she repeated the word he had been turning over and over in his mind since the day before. “Please tell the cook how much I love his tourtes.”

Bartolomeo nodded his head vigorously. “I will, madonna, I will.”

She dazzled him with another smile. “I liked the radish flower the best, though.”

She winked and turned away. He stood there, staring at the curve of her departing body, wondering what had just happened. He stared until she rounded the corner of the loggia. He was light-headed and it felt like he was spinning, like a little bird on a spit, fire rising all around it. The piece of paper in his hand was small and warm. He hurried out of the palazzo and down the cobbled street lining the adjoining Rio di San Luca canal.
When he was sure no one could see, he stopped and unfolded the little piece of paper.

Syncopation by Jodi Payne and BA Tortuga – Spotlight

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Jodi Payne and BA Tortuga who are celebrating today’s release of Syncopation.

Top Five Things We Cook

BA’s Top Five

Lord have mercy. I’m a little bit of a food whore, which surprises no one at all.

I love to make dinner rolls. My recipe is Moma Sue’s recipe who got it from Granny Key who got it from Gaga… (Cool random wonder — Jodi gave me the pan I use to cook rolls. *grins*)

Let’s see…

I love making potato soup. My potato soup is the one recipe my culinary school son hasn’t changed when he grew up and moved away. He loves it, my wife loves it, my moma loves it. 😀 (the secret? Ground mustard.)

I love cooking a turkey. I’m incredibly good at it. And trust me, I’ve cooked hundreds. Salt, pepper, oil, an onion and some lemons up the turkey butt and it’s perfect. I can’t roast a chicken for love or money, but I can make a turkey my bitch.

Cornbread has to go on the list. I have had so many people ask for the recipe, but it’s something that you make by sight — sometimes it needs cream, sometimes more buttermilk or a bonus egg. Cornbread talks to me and tells me what it needs and I give it up.

Lastly, but never least-ly. Chili. I am a Texan. I make a friggin’ stunning pot of chili, y’all. No, you can’t have the recipe. My son doesn’t even have the recipe. Making chili is a little like going to church. Your prayer is private, but you can celebrate it with all your people.

Jodi’s Top 5

I am much better baker than I am a cook so I’ll give you a little of both.

Banana bread. I get requests for this all the time. I love to make it on a cold winter day as an excuse to use the oven and warm up the house. I love it, my family loves it, and it’s the easiest thing in the world to make. (Hint: Joy of Cooking, the really old one with the broken spine that was your grandmother’s.)

Spaghetti sauce. A year round favorite, I make what I call “garbage sauce” out of whatever veggies are wilting in the fridge. Mushrooms, broccoli, zucchini, onions, peppers, garlic, beans, asparagus, Brussels sprouts, basil (mmm basil), whatever. Anything you can throw in a pan and saute or puree and throw into a sauce works. Sometimes it’s tomato-based, sometimes wine or olive oil. Mmm sauce.

Brisket. Now hold on… I say this and BA shoots me a look because everyone knows that Texans make a mean brisket. Well, my wife is Jewish, and Jews make a mean brisket too, but it’s not at all, in any way, similar to the Texans. It’s more like a pot roast, done low and slow in the oven (or crockpot) with root veggies and beef broth. And then I make a gravy. Mmmm.

A selection of right here buy cialis online mixed flavours will be sent in every order. Moreover, to suit the different requirements of the viagra buy online woman. I don’t know, it’s not hard, but it’s one of my favorite things ever. Olive oil, salt & pepper, roasted until brown. OMG I can sit and eat it like popcorn.

My grandmother’s brownies. Known in my family as “Gammy’s Brownies”, these things are dense and fudgy and amazing. They are not for people who like crunchy edges or nuts or anything like that. They are soft and chocolatey perfection. (Unless you’re making them in a strange-to-you pan in a strange-to-you kitchen in New Mexico at altitude for the first time… then they’re just okay. Next time they’ll be better!)

Colt Boudreaux was raised in the Louisiana bayou and is gifted with a talent steeped in the rich and soulful New Orleans blues tradition. He makes a living as a session musician, playing guitar for anyone who needs him. When his manager sends him to New York, the Cajun is as beguiled as he is baffled by the energy of the city—and just as charmed by Kyle Alexander.

Kyle is a successful classically trained ballet dancer, choreographer, and native New Yorker whose unbridled talent defies convention, and whose rebel spirit favors ink, shuns the orchestra, and is every bit as unique as Kyle himself.

They find a connection right away that inspires rhythm and movement, mood and music, both in and out of the bedroom. It’s not long before they’re as obsessed with each other as they are with their art, and they decide to work together on an improvisational piece for Kyle’s upcoming solo exhibition.

But Kyle is focused, and Colt is free-spirited. Colt’s work ebbs and flows with inspiration, and Kyle’s is rehearsed. Kyle is social and sophisticated, and Colt… isn’t. When their talents weave together, it’s magical, but will their differences destroy it all?

Question: A seductress steals your husband, rips apart your family and shatters your dreams.

You:

a) Wish them luck, and walk away with your head held high (because that’s what society expects you to do)?

b) Quietly seethe, but accept that there is just nothing you can do about it (because it easier for everyone if you do nothing)?

c) Dig up dirt on the bitch (because someone like this would undoubtedly have dirt), use it to sabotage their relationship, then sit back with a glass of Pinot Grigio and watch them burn?

Answer: C. Oh, totally C.

…………………..

Meet Scarlett Smyth. She’s drop-dead gorgeous, has a rocking body and has an above average IQ. She brags that she can ensnare any husband or taken male, and …she often does. She also is ambitious and has a penchant for anything expensive.

When the shrewd and ambitious temptress lays eyes on Bradley Murdoch, she believes she has found her dream man and a ticket to the high life she’s entitled to. There are just two problems:

1) Bradley is married to Rival. Happily at that.

2) They have children. Adorable little girls.

Do those facts deter Scarlett in any way? No, not at all. She is determined to steal Bradley, smoothly replace Rival in his life and show him how to really live life.

In a calculating move, the seductress (she is so good at seduction, she is even penning a book on it) befriends the quiet and unassuming Rival and worms her way into Bradley’s life.
There’s more: To expedite things, Scarlett the mistress, engineers a way to wipe Rival out of the picture – sends the clueless wife on a “vacation”.

But Scarlett may have underestimated her opponent. When Rival realizes the extent of the betrayal, she decides, even though she lacks Scarlett’s genius IQ, not to turn the other cheek. In fact, she is determined to win back her husband, believing that he is a good man who is simply mistaking lust for love. She believes that someone like Scarlett has to have skeletons in her cupboards and she begins to snoop around, anything she can use against the other woman, anything that can help her exact revenge.

What Rival doesn’t realize is: no one takes on Scarlett – no one dares. The betrayed wife and the other woman collide. The result is another gripping suspense thriller from best selling author Eve Rabi.

If you’ve enjoyed Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, Girl on a Train by Paula Hawkins, books by Marian Keyes and Liane Moriarty, you will enjoy this ‘suspenseful, romantic and entertaining tale of love, lust and revenge.’

Let me tell you, nothing is more commanding than the elusive trait of true confidence, which I have been gifted with. It has made me who I am – the kind of kind of woman who goes wrecking-ball hard after what she wants, and gets it.

Me tooting my own horn? No. I’ll tell you why. I have a tale to tell that will blow that mind of yours. A tale based on my unwavering drive, my steely determination, and my ability to transcend hurdles to achieve my desires and wants.

Instinct kicks in as Frankie Chandler, former Navy nurse, now soon to be veterinarian, witnesses an accident and rushes to save a man’s life. When State Trooper Rory Sanders arrives on the scene, he’s awestruck at the sight of the gorgeous woman taking charge. Once the frenzy is over, both are reluctant to walk away from their mutual attraction. But they’ll each have to get beyond their hesitations, such as Rory telling himself it’s okay to let love in while raising his daughter after losing his wife, and Frankie who’s never had a serious relationship in her life because she’s been focused on school while also helping raise her nephew. Will the power of love win out and make their Christmas wishes come true?

Frankie had enjoyed her time as a nurse in the Navy, pleased to be out of her small home town. But after a number of years she knew the crazy pace and action was enough for her and she returns home to settle down. Driving home Frankie comes across a bad car accident and she races to help the injured man. There, she meets Trooper Rory Sanders. While neither Frankie nor Rory are looking for love, they can’t deny the attraction between them and soon that blossoms into something far more special.

I found this to be a fun and somewhat sweet romance. This had quite a feel of a small-town, heart-warming style of family story to me. Rory’s young daughter and Frankie’s young nephew added strongly to this, and I feel readers looking for a hotly erotic, intensely sexual story might not find the intimacy and heat level high enough for their liking. Personally, though, I felt that the emotion and connection between Rory and Frankie was lovely and the slower pace of the story helped me feel that their relationship and attraction was more realistic. While Frankie had been single and focused on her study for some time, Rory had lost his wife a few years ago and I enjoyed the good balance I felt the author made. Rory hadn’t been looking for love, but both he and Alisa, his daughter, had finished most of their grieving for their tragic loss. I felt they were both in a good place to move on to a healthy and new relationship with Frankie. I was pleased there was very little drama/conflict in this area as I believe it would have felt clichéd to me and ruined the happy, gentle, heart-warming feel the story really had going for it.

With a strong cast of secondary characters – both Rory and Frankie’s parents, Alisa and Sammy the two respective children in their lives and a whole host of animals on Frankie’s farm – the story feels full and colourful without being crowded. I really enjoyed how the author managed to make the story feel busy but not like animals or characters had been crammed in for the sake of it. While I really would have liked a little more spicy bedroom action (there’s only one, very brief intimate scene in the last few pages of the story), it really is lovely to read a slower-paced, romantic story. While I feel readers looking for a sexy or erotic story might find this disappointing, I have to admit a hotly erotic, sexy story just wouldn’t have fit in with the family-orientated, farming, small-town feel the rest of the story had.

With vibrant characters, some Christmas good-cheer and a lovely happy ending this is a great, warm read and one that I feel should appeal to a wide range of readers.

Our Lives Need Writing & Our Writing Needs Life

I wish pressing the power button on my laptop would freeze the present. The whir of the fan would fire up a time machine and transport me to the Boulevard Saint-Germain in the 1920s. I’d have all the time in the world to write while sipping a glass of French wine that never emptied and nibbling freshly baked bread that was always warm. Unfortunately, that’s not a possibility in writers’ real lives. We all struggle to balance life and responsibilities with the writing mindset, naysayers, and lagging gratification. C’est la vie.

The mindset

I’m lucky enough to have story and character ideas running through my head all the time. Or wait, is that luck or a curse? It could very well be a curse because getting those ideas out of my mind and onto the page in between cooking supper, changing messy diapers, washing laundry, paying bills, and countless other chores is a massive balancing act. I find no enlightening transition or Zen-aura when I sit down to write. I’m still juggling carpool schedules and grocery lists in the back of my mind when I open my Word doc or Scrivener project. If I light a candle to set mood and focus, the damn cat gets curious, and no shelf is out of his reach. Long-hair and open flame—not a good combo.

Even in the hours I’ve set aside specifically for writing, there are unavoidable interruptions, like when kids are home sick from school. I have to ask myself if it’s worth making up those lost hours at night and then waking crabby on just three or four hours of sleep. (Coffee…) Bridging life and writing takes a certain mindset. You have to trust that you can return to your ideas when life intervenes. Use a dependable note system with backups (that most likely doesn’t involve napkins and sticky notes.) Jot down the specifics and when you set your mind to writing, forget the unfolded laundry and dust bunnies in the corner.

The naysayers

Unless you come from a family of writers who understand the struggle, you are always going to run into naysayers. These won’t be people you can just cut ties with when they belittle your goals. They’ll be relatives and friends who think writing is not difficult and who don’t understand your dream. Try not to take it personally. Consider how much understanding you’ve gained about the process since you started writing. People who have never given it a serious try can’t possibly understand the death-defying roller coaster that runs a regular route through that humble manuscript on your desk. (Chin up because it’s their loss—not yours. You are the one who’s brave enough to sit in the front row and take those corkscrews and dive loops with a smile on your face—and maybe a slightly crazy gleam in your eyes 😉

However, do stand up for yourself. Stand up to those people who volunteer you to do things in the time you’ve set aside for writing because it’s ‘freetime.’ It’s not. Stand up for yourself and tell your mother-in-law, sister, friend, etc that you’ve dedicated this time to writing. It’s a patient pursuit that requires commitment and revision. Even when you eventually have that published book in your hands, some of those people still might shrug it off and not understand its importance. But you do, and so do your fellow writers. So Breakfast-Club-fist-pump-it when you leave a naysayer’s house and be proud of yourself.

Gradual gratification

Our lives are filled with instant gratification. Need a new lamp? It’s ordered in one click. Need to cook that meal three times as fast? Plug in the Instant Pot. Have a question about ANYTHING? Open Google and the answer is less than one second away. But writing is a creative pursuit. It takes just the right mix of spark, dedication, and time—lots of time. After your first draft, you’re in store for another two, three, maybe four or more. Then comes feedback from beta readers or critique groups. Digesting those responses and deciding what does and doesn’t need to be changed is a process in itself and leaves you with yet another draft. There will be days when it feels like you’ll never be finished.

When your W.I.P. suddenly morphs into a heavily mascara-ed Brittney Spears and starts singing “I’m a Slave 4 U,” take a break. Remember that life and writing have a symbiotic relationship. The good things in life feed your writing, and your writing makes life sweeter. Take a break every now and then. Bake some cookies. Curl up with your significant other for a movie. Just give your mind a break. Put a puzzle together with your kids and take the time to be fascinated by how their minds work. The time you invest in observing life will repay you threefold in your writing. You’ll create richer characters and worlds which your readers will respond to because they can relate them to their own busy lives.

Good luck with the balance. C’est la vie, writers.

“David?” His gaze bolted up toward me, startled. Thank goodness he’d missed my personal tirade in the hall. He was slow to reply, as if recognizing me through a fog. “Jean.”

He breathed the word, and I tried hard not to get excited over the relief he seemed to pack into the single syllable. I took a few more steps into his office. It was in as much disarray as David. File drawers yawned open here and there with folders skewed at angles. White boards were covered with almost unintelligible notes.

“I didn’t expect to see you here this late.” I adjusted the strap of my purse across my shoulder and smoothed the lapel of my coat. He attempted to smile, but his expression fell far short of his usual jaunty grin. Instead, he let a frown fall and shrugged his shoulders, smoothing wrinkles on his normally pristine white shirt across the breadth of his chest.

He sighed, scrubbing a hand over his face. “Beth dumped me.”

“What?” I couldn’t believe it. David and Beth had one of those annoying fairytale love stories behind them that I couldn’t stand, but it wasn’t just because I was in love with the prince and, at times, had considered driving a stake through Beth’s heart. David and Beth seemed well-staged for happy ever after. No one except me—prince included—seemed to notice that the woman everyone thought was Cinderella had, in fact, always been an ugly stepsister.
