Christmas in the Highlands…

Not any dashing English lord’s idea of a good time. But now that Lord Alexander Mallory has won a Scottish estate in a hand of cards, he is the unlikely laird of the wild, snowy Bonniebroch. Worse yet, the ancient pile of stones comes with a betrothal. To a fiery red-headed virgin. And a curse.

Alex will have his hands full honoring the first, seducing the second and breaking the third…all by Twelfth Night.

If you like ghosts, quests, impossible curses and a Scottish romance then pull up a comfy chair and settle in with Plaid Tidings because a fun read is heading your way. Alexander Mallory is a hero who must face the impossible and Lucinda is the heroine who must help him, but she has secrets of her own. How a man who refused to allow himself to love comes to terms with falling in love for the first time while battling a waiting evil is the stuff great stories are made of. Ms. Marlowe does not disappoint – she does her plot justice. It’s great entertainment.

I liked watching Alexander initially fight his Scottish heritage. It was really clever of the author to show a reader how the hero slowly but surely, in bits and pieces of dialogue and habits, turned his back on his English side to eventually embrace the man he really is, the man he was meant to be. It was endearing and fascinating to watch unfold. The charm of Scotland lives within Alexander Mallory.

It was only at one part that the plot had a predictable progression. The villain’s scene moved awfully fast so it felt like a bandage being ripped off to let all the icky stuff get out so the clean, healed skin could be revealed. It was nasty; the description of the final demise reminded me of some classic horror films so that was cool. However, if a reader is looking for some seriously dark drama they won’t find it here. Plaid Tidings is first and foremost a romance and the bad guy was the foil that was used to give the right amount of tension and adrenaline without undermining the true focus. It sure did showcase Lucinda’s fortitude and pluckiness. She’s an unusual heroine and it was fun to get to see her in action.

Alexander’s seduction of Lucinda is quite entertaining and well written. Readers should find plenty to enjoy between the pages. There’s no doubt that the hero and heroine are quite compatible. I enjoyed watching the heroine discover just how effective a woman can be in seducing her own husband to get her way. What a clever minx.

There are quite a few surprises and other types of action interspersed throughout the novel and it definitely kept my interest all the way through. I heartily recommend readers giving Plaid Tidings a try. It’s filled with quirky charm and a delightful romance that worked because Alexander and Lucinda were so fun together. I’m glad I read this book and got to meet them.

Amy is trying to start fresh, but it’s a struggle. Working hard on her deadline in the evenings, she is desperate to land a regular nine-to-five job to help pay the bills and keep her afloat until her own business gets started. If that means working for Finbar Donahue – her ex-boyfriend’s old partner and ex-Army Ranger – then so be it. He knows her ex-boyfriend was shady. Could it be Amy wasn’t some duped innocent but actually in on it too?

This is a well-paced, action packed story that I greatly enjoyed. I found the plot complex and well layered – and while I guessed a few aspects there were still a number of surprises that delighted me and I didn’t see coming. I enjoyed sifting through everyone’s actions and motivations to try and find the “bad guys”. With so many strong secondary characters and the author’s suspenseful plotting I found this a highly interesting, convoluted story that I truly enjoyed.

I was a little disappointed that there were a few editing errors (an internal dialogue sentence highlighted blue, a sentence split into two paragraphs, etc) and these jarred me from the story and my enjoyment, but they were small things and could be easily rectified with another careful going-over. I really enjoyed the suspense and tension in the story, found myself eagerly turning the pages to find out what happened next. I feel mystery and thriller readers should thoroughly enjoy this story as much as I have.

The romance between Amy and Finn is also thick with chemistry and sizzling tension. While there is sexual intimacy in the book and more than a few steamy kisses – everything of an erotic nature happens “off camera”. I feel the author has done an amazing job of making the relationship between Amy and Finn passionate enough that spicy readers will enjoy it, but also subtle enough that more traditional readers won’t feel as if too much has been exposed.

Overall I found this a deeply complex, thoroughly interesting and entertaining read.

But since nobody sent her an invitation to the world-saving, she’s practically obligated to interfere.

The land where fairy tales exist is dying. Will Cruelty be able to save it?

Cruelty might have technically been a villain, but that couldn’t stop me from adoring her. Her personality was so well developed that I was able to predict how she’d react to virtually anything by the time I’d reached the midway point in the storyline, and I get so excited when that happens in a book. All of her choices made perfect sense as well given what I’d learned about who Cruelty was as an individual. Did I occasionally wince at the thought of certain decisions she made? Yes, but I never would have expected anything different from this character. Her tendency to be callous sometimes was as much a part of her personality as her intelligence or her uncanny ability to blend into her surroundings.

I will admit that it did take me some time to immerse myself in what was happening in the plot. The pacing was slower than normal in the beginning due to all of the information the main character needed to share with her audience about who she was, where she came from, and why she’d decided to emigrate to our universe. Sharing all of these details with the reader was necessary in order to understand what happened in later scenes, though, so I was grateful to have such a complete picture of everything up front. Once the pacing sped up, I was so glad I had stuck with it!

Ms. Katz’s whimsical writing style was not only a ton of fun to read, it was a perfect match for this story as well. The whole novel was full of quotable sentences that made me giggle. I wish I could fill every paragraph of this review with the humorous things the characters said and thought along the way, but I will restrict myself to only mentioning the one that amused me the most: “There was really no point in taking your anger out on cats. They were entirely resistant to curses, and they wouldn’t feel guilt if they didn’t deserve your rage.” The fact that every single chapter had several sentences like this one that I simply had to highlight and remember for later has made me an instant fan of this writer. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.

Beauty and Cruelty was a fairy tale for the twenty-first century. I’d wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who loves this genre as much as I do.

Being cuffed together is a bad thing…isn’t it?

Scarlett never imagined that she would be famous from her YouTube channel, but to be popular enough that a rival decides to cuff her to someone else as part of a publicity stunt? Ludicrous! Most unexpected of all is her attraction to the man she’s chained to—fellow YouTuber, Jackson.

Jackson has always thought Scarlett was an attractive woman, only he never thought she felt the same about him. So when he realizes she isn’t totally against being cuffed to him, Jackson decides to take advantage of the situation and see just how far he can push her limits.

It turns out that handcuffs are the best kind of torture.

Can cyber distance and some heated debate actually make the heart grow fonder? Yes, yes it can.

The premise drew me in first. Having a teenager who is affluent in all things YouTubers made me curious about the cyber world they occupy and what happens when people who normally only interact online, meet in real life. This was a fun little story to read, long enough to be satisfying and short enough to finish in a setting, kind of like a vlog episode. Very clever.

I’ve been to a major romance readers con as well as a smaller venue comicon so I was pleased with the way the writer described the excitement in the air, the noise, the crowds and the cosplayers. Very realistic. And in the midst of all this organized chaos Jackson and Scarlett come to realize they have more than gaming in common and not just their shared distrust and dislike for fellow YouTuber, Rex the Hex.

Rex was actually an interesting character and he chose the perfect costume for the con, Loki, god of Mischief. I wondered about his true intent behind cuffing Jackson and Scarlett together. Hoping to see them fight seemed too easy or maybe just too unpredictable since they hadn’t had any real online fights for a while.

But then again, at the end of the day, even if he did have ill intent, the cuffs were a good ploy to force them, or maybe provide them the opportunity, to spend some close quarters time. I did have to wonder at how long the chain was between the cuffs for them to be pull off some of the moves they did.

Readers shouldn’t go into this short thinking they’re going to get lots of history or a guaranteed HEA. This is more of a happily-for-now with a good chance of an HEA later. I wouldn’t mind seeing Jackson and Scarlett in another story to see how they’re doing.

The story is good and, as I mentioned, the premise was unique and interesting. It’s what I would call a quickie that doesn’t require the reader to become invested in a long drawn out emotional ride. They both recognize their interest, as well as chemistry and they move on it. It ends rather abruptly without answering some questions but maybe the author does plan to carry this story on later or maybe we’re just supposed to make up our own minds about what happened next. Either way, it was nice way to spend time with a new author.

Only have a half hour or so and craving a juicy little short to fill it? Give Cuffed a try. Being attached at the hip never sounded so good.

As Ray begins to peel back the layers, he uncovers a growing list of suspects. To solve the case, Ray must put himself, and those he cares about, in mortal danger.

Private investigator has been called on the case to locate missing Claire Robertson. Claire is a marine biologist that is going against what some residents think could bring jobs to the city. She also recently had an altercation with her ex-fiance after calling off their wedding. Is Claire being missing just a coincidence or is there a darker reason behind her disappearance?

Savannah Gone is a quick read that is told in first person. While on the trail investigating Claire’s disappearance, Ray Fontaine does a lot of talking in his own humorous way. I give the author props for bravery in having his own original style but some of the wording and descriptions used were words that I found weird and unedited. While I am reading I have to stop and question who talks like this? “…fiddled with the radio, I hoofed it inside…, On my left, a wrinkled old bird with a steel wool beehive roosted behind her desk.” The character has a different style of humor. I’m not saying it’s bad and others may enjoy it but I just found it weird and not very humorous.

The story was more about Ray’s opinion, and his life and not enough of a connection given about the victim Claire. One short description was given about Claire in the beginning of the book, but not enough for me to connect or have any kind of feelings about her or for me to have concern that she was missing. And when Claire is found, the story lacked details of what actually happened. Ray, seeming to be in his own world, goes on with his investigation with no concern for Claire’s or her parents’ well being. I would have liked to have read more about the victim, with a little bit of Ray’s life and behavior. This book was just the opposite.

I am not a reader that is a stickler for historical details, but I did find it interesting how the author included detailed scenes and tidbits about Savannah and the surrounding areas. Even though I didn’t find Ray to be a likable character I can say he loves and care for his daughter, Megan. Ray is also dedicated in solving Claire’s missing persons case, even going without proper sleep. The plot was interesting to read about the scandal surrounding the dredging and heavy ecological price to the city. Even though Ray could be a little bit pushy, the trail of interviews were entertaining. And with Ray’s list of suspects increasing I wasn’t really sure who was behind Claire’s kidnapping. So there is a little suspense built on who was responsible for Claire’s disappearance.

I wouldn’t classify this as a gripping suspense novel, more along the line of a high strung private investigator who does more interrogating than that of asking questions. Perhaps not something I would read again, but certainly something that help my interest throughout.  Those who enjoy old-fashioned detective stories might enjoy this much more than I did.

But when Ariah’s own lethal secrets unfold, their new love is threatened by ancient ghosts. Can Gabriel and Ariah find hope in the wreckage of their pasts—or will the cycle of history repeat again?

There’s a reason for everything and sometimes the most important battle we fight is one that allows us to forgive ourselves.

Finding Gabriel is historical romance about a wounded hero and the heroine who teaches him how to be brave off the battlefield. Together, they learn to live again and reasons to love again. It’s a beautiful and poignant story of healing the wounds that can be seen and the deeper, potentially more fatal wounds that can’t be seen, This is a smoothly written novel that took me back in time to live each and every scene in detail.

Gabriel is a commander, a soldier who have fought wars and came home when others of his squad didn’t. War is never easy on anyone but especially for those on the front line. What made this book more personal, more real is that Gabriel is fighting an internal war that is every bit as harsh and painful as what he sees on the battlefield. PTSD is more in the forefront of national news today but it isn’t a new condition since wars have been fought since the beginning of time. Gabriel’s a hero who doesn’t want the notoriety, he welcomes and even pursues death. When death alludes him on the battlefield he takes matters into his own hands. Fate has other plans and sends him an angel in the form of widower and single mother, Ariah.

Ariah is the wife of a soldier who has not answered his letters in months. She fears the worst. When she finds a floating almost dead body of Gabriel in the River Seine. She cannot find in her self to let him die. Ariah was an easy heroine to cheer for. She’s not had an easy life, she wasn’t a part of the French aristocracy, she’s a commoner who was dealt a bad home life and chose to make a better life for herself and her daughter.

When I originally chose this book, I first noticed the page count and thought It would take me at least a couple of days, if not longer, to finish it. I couldn’t put it down and ended up reading straight through. The story flows seamlessly and the emotions, especially for Gabriel, are just so raw. The romance builds slowly between Gabriel and Ariah but the timing is perfect.

This book is a must read for those who want to experience a man taken to his lowest possible point and then the glory of healing love. This is one of those stories that you still feel even after the last page. Pick up a copy and be prepared to immersed into beautiful world building and characters who steal your heart.

But then Simon becomes a regular, a bright spot more interesting than the inside of Beckett’s head, and daydreams start to seem like they could be something far more tangible—if reality doesn’t get in the way first.

Beckett has been working for years as a barista at The Percolation Station and was astonished his path had never crossed with sexy regular, Simon. As their ten o’clock meetings became somewhat regular, Beckett couldn’t help but become infatuated. Their conversations were so easy, but Simon wasn’t single and so Beckett kept their conversations light and carefree. Then suddenly, Simon was available, and Beckett was determined to turn his daydreams into reality.

This is a wonderful, steamy romance story of two men finding each other and sharing their passions. Beckett is about to studying post-graduate work in environmental courses, and Simon is passionate about his writing, but very eco-conscious too. The chemistry between the two men is intense and wonderful to read. While I felt their story was a little rushed, the shortness of the story could indicate the author didn’t have much space to slow the pace down. I really wish we’d been given more depth to some of the scenes – like the laptop poetry scene and the final family scene in particular. As a reader I felt a little shortchanged that two such important, passionate scenes had the feeling of being rushed and almost glossed over. Those two scenes were pivotal in Simon and Beckett’s relationships and even after rereading them I was left with many questions – like how the men reacted and felt emotionally from such important discoveries. I was a little frustrated that more time and words weren’t spent on them, even if other scenes would have been cut shorter to ensure that.

I really enjoyed the relationship growing between Beckett and Simon, I was pleased they seemed to fit together so well and found the sex between them both steamy and enticing. The bedroom door was certainly left open, but I didn’t feel anything too daring was described in detail. Readers who enjoy M/M romance and don’t mind a bit of spice in their story should be as satisfied as I was.

Aside from wishing a few of the scenes had been longer and better fleshed out, I found this to be an emotional, romantic story. I enjoyed the intimacy between the two men and appreciated the pacing of their growing relationship. This is a lovely book and one I have enjoyed.

With her sister married, Lavinia must navigate the rocky shoals of London society with none other than that notorious knave, Mr. Alaster Rowland, at her side. Will he help her find true love or be her passionate ruin?

This is a very romantic story and sure to please many historical romance fans. For me, the most telling scenes dealt with Lavinia dancing with Tuck. Those were the moments that told me Tuck’s fate was sealed. This confirmed rake and bachelor was going to fall but the antics, challenges and surprises which kept him sober also helped make this book a rollicking good read. It was comical seeing a guy so completely out of his element trying to keep up with a woman who tries to be proper and organized and yet manages to discombobulate him every step of the way.

The author painted a wonderful backdrop for her story and her characters, and the ensuing dialogue not only kept me reading but kept the story moving at a brisk and steady pace. A reader will find many reasons to grin and chuckle throughout The Knave of Hearts.

Another point about this novel that pleased me is that the timeline interweaves a bit with the story about Lavinia’s sister, Louisa, in The Viscount Who Lived Down the Lane. The Knave of Hearts can certainly stand on its own but for fans of Ms. Boyle’s previous story, reading this book about Lavinia next makes it extra fun and interesting. However Lavinia’s story comes with its own villain and drama which brings out the hero hidden deep inside Tuck. The ultimate demise of the villain was a shock. I never saw it coming and the sharp surprise made more of an impact and increased the likeability of the novel even more.

As much as there is light heartedness and humor in the telling of Lavinia and Tuck’s romance, there is a sad and touching element that haunts both books, and it has something to do with a friend from the past, and some letters. There is a cleansing of sorts, a wrenching off of the band aid of time which forces Tuck to face his fears and regrets. A healing begins between two men and affects a third. It’s happy yet bittersweet at the same time.

Tuck also has some fascinating skeletons in his closet that he tries to distance himself from but the author makes those skeletons rattle and come out at the best possible time to have an extraordinary effect on their romance and the suspenseful part of the plot. It was quite enjoyable and kept those pages flipping. I love it when a character is revealed to have more depth and personality than led to believe. Tuck might have started educating Lavinia but she turns the tables and shows him how very improper she can be. Very cool stuff.

The Knave of Hearts is a treat not to be missed. I adored watching Tuck and Lavinia fall in love and I truly believe this is a story well worth reading. The very end of the novel was written so well, it caused me to sigh in romantic bliss – now that’s romance.

Because unlike the T.V. shows, in Ghosts of Kingston Cottage the hunters not only find the ghosts and interact with them but two on the team become convinced that the power of true love is real. They get to see it and feel it in the most unlikely of ways. Talk about romantic!

Arabella is the one who can see and talk to ghosts, and Lucas is the reporter who is there to debunk them or validate them. Talk about a conflict of interest! What is delightful is the fact that Lucas comes to believe. It’s actually easier for him to believe in the ghosts than it is for Arabella to trust him because she’d been severely burned by someone she thought loved her in the past. So, she has a lot more protection around her heart and it’s almost impossible for Lucas to break through. Leave it to the ghosts to teach her a lesson and learn she does.

This is a fast, engaging and clever read that is delightfully entertaining and fun. There are no mean nasty ghosts or dark drama for readers to worry about. Ghosts of Kingston Cottage is really about love and it’s character driven. I enjoyed how the author focused on the case and let Arabella’s professionalism and personality speak louder than anything she could have said to convince Lucas that her talent was real. The romance between Lucas and Arabella grew gradually over the course of a few days and its swiftness was addressed with some of Lucas’ family history. It made absolute sense to me and I like the story better for it because this tale is truly charming.

I liked meeting Katie and her husband Seamus and the challenge they presented to the team. From the sounds of it, they were good people in life just as they were in death. I was very happy that they finally got their HEA. As for Lucas and Arabella, their lives are just starting to be lived out so it’s a happy for now kind of wrap up. The sweet thing is, I have no doubts that a happy ever after is in their future. Especially after the romantic and grand gesture Lucas ends up offering Arabella. That clinched it for me.

For readers who crave and enjoy the physical expression of love, it’s there but it’s like a big giant reward after all was said and done. I felt the author handled it just right. In fact, it was perfect. I’m quite happy.

Ghosts of Kingston Cottage is a treat to read. It really is. It made me feel quite cheerful at the end and upbeat. The novella could actually lend itself to a Hallmark movie plot because it has all the elements that one would expect from the ‘feel good channel’. This book might be short in pages but it’s got a lot of heart and has a solid story to tell. If you’re in the mood for a ghost story that won’t scare you but one that engages the heart then give this one a try. It’s well worth it.
