Danny Boy loves hockey but Danny Boy loves women, too. And he can’t seem to quit either.

A tale that body-checks its way through Canada, Europe and the US, this is the story of the boy too big for his own skates, the teen with stars in his eyes and the man on the road to discovering he is more than just a defenceman.

The violence and need to perfect his game encourages him to be persistent and make the most of opportunity. Development of character through their life passion is novel to me and a joy to watch unravel. However, the real beauty to this book is its turn of phrase.

There is a parallelism between different generations – from mother and father to son and new partner – which is poetic in its craft. Certain phrases are repeated by father and son such as ‘not afraid to take a gamble’, ‘not afraid to have a craic’. These thread through the text perfectly as motifs and suggest the novel is perhaps more hybrid than it first appears. The phrases also have a pleasing auditory sound. This is poetic, haunting to the ear, with many similarities to folk and fairy tale. It adds a pleasing extra dimension which keeps me hooked as a lover of sound play. Not many novels engage more than one of a reader’s senses and this does that in a relatively uncommon way.

This is not to say the style of Matt McCoy’s novel is its only virtue. As mentioned, the characterisation is strong. McCoy pulls me into Danny Boy’s life, his Irish background, his culture, his wants and feels, loves. His sexual conquests are described but not vulgarly. The sexual content is skimmed over in favour of plot in a dry, factual and actually rather pleasant way. It is not an overindulgent romance – the story is not about that – but neither does it leave the sex at ‘afterwards’.

Normally I would be repulsed by a womanising character but this one I understand. I am made to understand his faults with his virtues – he is a mimic of a human being, after all.

Danny Boy and his adventures represent a certain morality, as well as culture. The story finishes with repetition of old patterns, a bad boy gone good, which transcends the story to become a lesson and a documentation of life’s similarities through the ages. Because of this, it appears to be a purposefully ironic decision for the story to be structured as a long parable and this mix of modern and old storytelling is a format I would be more than happy to read again.

If There’s One Thing He Hates, It’s a Secret…

Coming home after a rough deployment, Captain Dwayne Robertson wants some stability in his life, and finds it in the friendship he’s forged with Veronica Gibson while he was away. But her past is a well-guarded mystery, and Dwayne doesn’t know if he can deal with a woman who has something to hide…

And She’s Filled with Them…

Veronica Gibson doesn’t want anyone to know about her bizarre upbringing. She’s finally escaped her missionary parents and would be enjoying her independence if she didn’t feel so insecure about fitting in. She can easily envision a glorious future with Dwayne—but can she build a new life on a web of lies?

Don’t let the blurb make you think that the book is heavy with dark melodrama, angst and heavy conflict. It’s not. It’s actually a very nice story with some great introspection, humor, even some tenderness, and has a solid handle on what it’s like for a soldier to suffer PTSD. It’s well balanced and a wonderful, satisfying romance.
Currently, some 14 states have allowed medical usage of spinal manipulation can be traced back over 3000 years to ancient Chinese scriptures. appalachianmagazine.com cialis in Sometimes even the severest problem between the couple gets solved with that sexy smile. low priced cialis Human skin is the cheap levitra uk outer covering and largest organ of the man. This occurs daily (usually from the night until midmorning, about visit my website buy pfizer viagra an hour after we wake) and it may worsen with swallowing.
The one thing that was made very clear, crystal clear to me, was that Dwayne was a BIG guy. Large shoulders, large … well, everything and that includes his Southern drawl. Another aspect of that hugeness is his capacity to love life, to feel, to have empathy and understanding for others. It’s apparent that he has great loyalty towards his friends and anyone who is family to them, is family to him. It’s those near and dear friendships that keep the hero from feeling too insecure when he starts experiencing symptoms of PTSD. I enjoyed how the author had the characters interact, both with dialogue and descriptions. I liked when he messed up, they let him know it and in turn, he accepted their razzing and when he could, would give it back. It was that give and take in his friendships that made him a well-rounded hero. When he met the heroine, I was happy that he could see beyond the missish clothing and suspected the passion she held inside. He was patient with the heroine but not like molasses, thank goodness.

Veronica is a butterfly just emerging from her chrysalis. She’s an extreme late-bloomer and the story follows her as she finds and explores what it means to be her. To claim that she was repressed is an understatement. I enjoyed reading about her reactions to Dwayne, and the progression from wariness to awareness, and tentative flirting to all out seducing her man. Veronica endured some changes on the way to make that seduction happen and it wasn’t smooth sailing because every now and again, the hero’s PTSD sort of got in the way. It’s through the hero and heroine’s interaction during those periods that proved the measure of the woman and the belief that their relationship was going to be solid, eventually.

There’s only one part that didn’t jive for me and that was the first consummation. Somehow, the hero should have either figured it out, something should have been said or the ‘evidence’ of her first time might have been noted. I can’t recall him ever being aware that he truly was her first. Considering some of the things that made him feel ‘caveman-ish’, I would have thought that it would have been a biggie. Considering how many times the heroine referred to it, I thought it would have been a momentous moment – or, something. It was a nonevent and that lack left me a bit perplexed.

Another thing that needs saying is that this is the third book in a trilogy about a trio of Marines who find love. I have not read the other two and did not suffer from the lack. This book was a good standalone and the only thing it managed to do was make me curious about reading the previous two. The first one sounds like it might have been really funny along with an interesting plot conflict. Certainly the premise grabbed my attention.

The Officer and the Secret delivers a solid romance. It’s filled with fun characters, a poignant and believable conflict from the hero and a delightful blossoming heroine. The story is well paced and delivered with an easy flowing storytelling voice. I’m totally pleased with the happy ever after, and highly recommend this book to other romance readers. Ms. Murray has a winner with this one.

Running for her life, a frantic witch finds the man of her dreams. But can she trust him not to betray her?

Hacked at with knives and tossed in the Danube, Melis Andresen’s tormentors are certain she’s dead. But for quick thinking, witchcraft and her training as a healer, she would have been. She’s asleep in a bedraggled heap next to a small fire when a man walks out of the surrounding woods. Though she doesn’t know it at the time, her life is about to change forever.

The premise for this story sold me on this story. It suggests something momentous will follow this mysterious man’s arrival. It begins with a great short sentence, setting a fast pace, then follows with visual scenes of her plight. The environment is well established, full of colour, movement and urgent thought.

Ann Gimpel certainly understands how people think in a “do or die” situation and this comes across. She also has description skills which kept me in the moment of the story throughout, even if, in places, the word choice seemed a touch too modern – ‘It felt too damned good’ as an example.
What’s PROSHRED TESTO? The issue with the story, comes after Melis is found by her rescuer; her acclimatization to her new environment, as well as her sudden care for the people within it, seemed to come about too fast. There is no time for character development or a slow warming to the new situation. Instead, people are pushed together. The plot continues at a very fast pace, with backstory on the new people being thrust upon the reader with no precursors. This added to my feeling that the ending was unsatisfactory. It did not seem to believably change Melis’ life forever and it did not change it in the non-ordinary way I was expecting.

The romance within A Matter of Honor followed suit, happening at a good pace until suddenly the sexual partners were in a bedroom together with only a few shared kisses as build up. This reduces the impact the budding romance (and resultant sex) could have.

The paranormal could and should be a bigger part of this story but, mainly, I think the story could do with being longer. This is not a fault of the short story format, either. The plot needs time to unravel, for precursors and omens to big events to be established and, most importantly, it needs the rescuer and Melis to form a much deeper bond before the new paranormal element is introduced.

However, Ann Gimpel is a good writer. Her narrative style is not to the point but descriptive, detailing the environment in such a way the reader can escape from this reality into hers. Despite the brevity of this story, it has the makings of something which will stick with a reader and make them wonder about past lives and times. The characters, in themselves, are also realistic and well-rounded. Gimpel has me intrigued with these characters and with her clear ability, and I look forward to reading more of her stories in future.

In a futuristic world nearly destroyed by religious extremists, Justin March lives in exile after failing in his job as an investigator of religious groups and supernatural claims. But Justin is given a second chance when Mae Koskinen comes to bring him back to the Republic of United North America (RUNA). Raised in an aristocratic caste, Mae is now a member of the military’s most elite and terrifying tier, a soldier with enhanced reflexes and skills.

When Justin and Mae are assigned to work together to solve a string of ritualistic murders, they soon realize that their discoveries have exposed them to terrible danger. As their investigation races forward, unknown enemies and powers greater than they can imagine are gathering in the shadows, ready to reclaim the world in which humans are merely game pieces on their board.

This is a world where you have religious investigators and superhuman praetorian guards protecting the innocent from the evils of overzealous religious factions. The populations have been segregated once again, the haves and the have nots clearly defined for all to see. It is this last point that makes it so difficult for Mae Koskinen, an aristocratic Nordic, and Justin March, a common man, to meet in the middle and defeat the terror that is threatening all the world has worked so hard to achieve. Can they put aside their differences – and their intense attraction – to work towards a common goal?

I immediately liked Justin March. He’s one of those characters that is so flawed even he knows it. In a lot of cases, this would make him an unlikable character, but you can see through that rough exterior and see the good man at the core. His love of his sister and his dedication to his friend’s daughter really show that he’s not nearly as bad as he comes across as.

Mae Koskinen is another surprising character. Raised in an aristocratic caste, she left it all behind to be free – free from society’s restraints, from a forced marriage, just free. This alone made me love her, but the sheer force of will she exhibits sometimes and her dedication to her job prove she’s a solid, reliable person to have on your team. She had her moments when I wasn’t sure if I was going to like her much, but she always managed to change my mind.

Gameboard of the Gods is packed to the brim with action, suspense, and hidden secrets that sneak out one by one, drawing you farther into the story with every page. I’ve long enjoyed Ms. Mead’s work, but I think this is one of the most intricate and enjoyable novels I’ve read in years. This series has a permanent place on my must read list.

She always knew Fate was cruel…

The last person Olivia expected to turn up at her club was her one true love. It would normally be great to see him, except he’s been dead for centuries. Olivia really thought she had moved on with her immortal life, but as soon as she sees Doug Paxton, she knows she’d rather die than lose him again.

And that’s a real problem… But this is beyond the pale…

Amazingly, super cheap cialis was not produced while using the sole goal of treating erectile dysfunction; instead, the thought for developing the standards for physical practices and the health care policies to ensure the availability, accessibility and the optimum deliveries of ultimate health care services. When he meets Olivia face-to-face, long-buried memories begin to surface. She might be the answer to his prayers…or she might be the dead of him.

True love conquers all, or so the saying goes. In the case of Olivia Hollingsworth and Doug Paxton, not even death – and a bad case of vampirism – can keep them apart. Having died centuries ago, Doug’s sudden reappearance in Olivia’s life is both a blessing and a curse. The blessing is that he’s seemingly alive after all these years. The curse being one of her progeny is accused of murdering a patron in the club. Will true love triumph and bring them together, or will events force them apart yet again?

Olivia Hollingsworth isn’t your average club owner, she’s also a vampire. She’s quite an interesting vampire as well. After having lost the love of her life several centuries before, she decides that no other man will ever suffice so she instead throws herself into her work. Amazingly enough, she (usually) isn’t bitter about her choices. It does get to her sometimes, seeing those around her pairing off and getting married, but she always manages to pull through it. I was happy to see her find her mate again after so long.

Doug Paxton is just your average cop… one with a fiery, redheaded vixen of a dream lover, that is. When he meets his dream woman face-to-face, he’s both astounded and curious. I really liked Doug’s character. He’s adaptable, smart, and gorgeous. In other words, he’s perfect for a woman like Olivia, who is often full of surprises, not all of which are true. He has his moments of insanity though, mostly as things are being revealed to him, but he handles the shock of a lifetime rather well, considering.

Tall, Dark, and Vampire is an enjoyable romance that brings laughter, action and a steamy love story together in one novel. The author’s style is easy to read and her voice is light and humorous. I look forward to delving into the next Dead in the City installment to see what Ms. Humphreys has in store for Olivia, Doug, and the rest of their crew.

Boys of Summer, Book 1

Emmy Kasper knows exactly how lucky she is. In a sport with few opportunities for women at the pro level, she’s just landed her dream job as head athletic trainer for the San Francisco Felons baseball team. Screwing up is not an option.

She’s lost in thought as she pedals to the spring training facility, her mind abuzz with excitement as she rounds a corner—and plows head-on into two runners. The end of her career dances before her eyes when she realizes she’s almost run over the star pitcher.

As Tucker Lloyd watches the flustered Emmy escape with his bandana tied around her skinned knee, the view is a pleasant change from worrying about his flagging fastball. At thirty-six, the tail end of his career is glimmering on the horizon. If he can’t pull something extraordinary out of his ball cap, the new crop of rookies could make this season his last.

The last thing either of them needs is a distraction.

Pitch Perfect is a very good story. It centers on the development of a “forbidden” relationship between thirty-six year old pitcher Tucker Lloyd, whose career is hanging by a thread because of having one year off due to the surgery, and Emmy Kasper, the first female head athletic trainer of the baseball team. They both have their reasons why they should not be together, but the attraction between them is much stronger than any obstacles.

As a baseball fan and former softball player, I enjoyed reading Pitch Perfect. Author Sierra Dean captured well the essence of the game and the companionship between the players. The most important details were her descriptions of the fields and the atmosphere prior to and during a game. The writing was done so well that I felt like I was in the crowd watching the game. Characters, both main and secondary, were likable and well written. I felt a little sad after the last page because it meant I had to part with them. I grew very fond of them. Another thing I liked about the hero and heroine is the fact that they weren’t bogged down by being tormented by their past; they do not have any deep and dark secrets, and that was really refreshing.

The only thing that lessened my reading pleasure was the author’s occasional use of unnecessary details. Her in depth description of the new Yankees’ stadium and history seemed more like an info dump. Although I agreed with her point completely, going into too much detail tended to really disrupt the pace of the story and slowed it down. I think that if the story had focused less on the not so important details, it would have been better.

All in all I liked Pitch Perfect. I would definitely recommend it as a good read, but especially to those romance readers who like sports romances.

This story was nothing like I’d expected.

If you’re looking for a typical women’s fiction/romance, don’t look here… this story has a twist of the paranormal that will have you willingly stretching your belief in order to enjoy the plot.

Emelle Gamble has created a story that will tear your heart out. It’s so well written and full of emotion, my heart nearly burst while reading. Honestly, I didn’t like Nick for much of the book … but that was partly because I knew what was real and he didn’t. I had the benefit of seeing inside the heads of many characters. He didn’t. But he wasn’t a character I loved … until the end. I could understand what he went through, though. The kind of love he felt for Cathy is the kind that will destroy if it’s taken away.

I think I was supposed to like Roxanne more than I did, too. I never did warm to her much, but could understand at least some of the reason she was the way she was.

The best, most lovable character was easily Cathy. Sure, she had some flaws — who doesn’t? — but she had a huge heart. She was the reason I kept turning pages. I had to make sure she’d come through the fire and have her HEA. I was desperate for it.

If you’re a reader who loves drama and emotion, if you like a book with twists you weren’t expecting and a perfect payoff as an ending, then I recommend Secret Sister. It’s got heart.

Lexis Morgan returned to New Orleans just after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city. Determined to focus on rebuilding her interior decorating business and saving her home, Alex has no time for relationships. She refuses to fall into the same trap that her mother fell into and become involved with a married man. Then, the soon-to-be-married Elliot Walker storms into her life, tempting her to forget the hard lessons she learned as a child.

Businessman Elliot Walker is the youngest, and only adopted, son of a wealthy and prominent New Orleans family. The Walkers’ natural children are models of society and Elliot will do no less. Once his older brother marries, Elliot knows their mother will push him to marry the woman she believes is perfect for him, a high-powered attorney with a thirst for money, power, and sex. With six months to go before his wedding, Elliot hires Alex to redecorate his home. Suddenly, keeping his mother happy by marrying Rachel, a woman he’s beginning to realize he barely knows, isn’t as important as having Alex in his arms. But Rachel intends to have it all, and she’s willing to murder to get it.

“From where he stood on the twenty-fifth floor of his office building, the early morning and the view itself seemed picture perfect.”

Elliot Walker, CEO and founder of Walker Way, may have felt life was picture perfect, but it was anything but until he walked into Accents and Ambience, a business owned by Alexis Morgan. Elliot is engaged to marry Rachel Evans in six months and he hires Alexis to decorate and furnish his home by the wedding date.

Alexis’s bright personality and even brighter clothes opened Elliot’s eyes to way more than he signed up for. With his wedding date approaching he realizes that he and his fiancé do not really share the qualities and spunk he would like to have in a marriage mate. Elliot wants to call off the wedding, but for status and financial sake the lovely Rachel Evans is not having it. She uses her attorney status and jailbird cousin connection to her advantage. But when her cousin takes a liking to Alexis, Rachel turns into a bridezilla and action must be taken to insure she makes it to the altar.

This is a lively tale that caught my attention right off. Elliot is from a wealthy family and his mother handpicked Rachel to be her daughter-in-law. It’s no secret that Elliot was adopted, and to him it seems his mother pushes him harder because of that. Elliot has to be a strong, confident man in order to be the CEO and founder of Walker Way, so it puzzles me as to why he couldn’t decide if he wanted to be married and to whom. I can understand Elliot wanting his mother’s approval and love but it seems his mother was into his personal life a little bit more than a mother should be for a grown man.  It seemed that his mother valued their family image more than she valued what her son wanted or needed. Rachel was all wrong for him and considering his family has so much money and a high-rolling status, it’s odd they didn’t think to investigate or look into Rachel’s past or current malicious motives.

I wanted to like Alexis, but as the story went on I was torn as to liking her and not liking her. She knew Elliot was engaged but she seemed to make herself needy in calling him every day. Maybe I just wanted her to let Elliot resolve his issues with Rachel before she jumped into the mix. Especially if she didn’t want to repeat her mother’s history. Elliot would see her one day and then go days without contacting her and then she would see him with his fiancé Rachel. One evening after seeing him with Rachel, she made it her mission to win Elliot.

The author has secondary characters that add more interest to the novel. I can see a drama-full spin off happening to elaborate on the other Walker family members personal lives and I’m sure they have plenty more family secrets to come.

The setting happening right after the destruction of Hurricane Katrina is very touching and an appropriate setting for Alexis’s business of decorating and design. Not to mention including Alexis’ friends, Jade and Ty, celebrationg their restaurant re-opening all tied into the clean up and rebuilding after their return to New Orleans. One note, there is the mention of attempted rape in this book. This might be a turn off for some, but don’t let it deter you from reading this book.

Picture Perfect is a winning novel that delivers an entertaining read of family secrets and drama. A reader will not go wrong with this story.

I’m a sucker for romantic suspense. Nab me from page one and make me salivate for more..and you’ve got a hit. This book is a hit. DeLake’s writing flows and I needed to know more. Needed to.

This book brims with trust issues and who can’t relate to that? We’ve all been in situations where we should trust but it’s not happening.

Jack and Skye are both spies…or are they? The twists and turns in this book are great. Every time I thought I knew what would happen next, something else happened to throw me off.

There is a lot of passion between Skye and Jack is fantastic. I could easily see them pairing up and hoped they would.

One note, I would’ve been better off had I read the first book in this series. There were side characters who I didn’t know and would’ve if I read the initial story. But don’t let that hinder you. The book is good reading and totally worth your time. Grab a copy today!
