Yet, intriguing as the backdrop is (and it is! My one complaint is my wish to see more… a tiny bit more…) it is the mystery that stars. Familiar ‘detective,’ Gamaliel, local Rabban, is called by none other than the prefect, Pilate himself, when the prefect is (so he claims) falsely accused of murder. Although Gamaliel owes nothing to the prefect, and in fact, might prefer to see him fall, Pilate rightly assures him that he is ‘too just’ and ‘too righteous’ to allow such an injustice. Oh, we see into Gamaliel’s own psyche in some of these moments.

Gamaliel’s investigation would do a contemporary detective proud; he pursues facts logically; consulting with those he trusts.  Suspicious where he needs to be, for the most part. We see a plain motive from the start, but, we too have seen that the obvious killer is not the one. There is both intrigue and danger, and while not suspenseful in the thriller way, there is a steady increase in tension.

Ramsay brings us a vision of a life–and lives–woven into the intriguing pursuit of injustice. The Wolf and the Lamb is a wonderful, thought-provoking, and enjoyable read. While mystery fans will love it,  you won’t need to be a mystery fan to find this completely intriguing.

Susan is an unusual, youngish-but still absentminded professor type; not easily fooled, but still sympathetic to her students. This main character immediately likable, mostly for her human qualities. She’s both forgetful and sharp, as well as quick-witted. While she doesn’t want to be blamed for a murder, she doesn’t start investigating until it seems as if she has become a target, as well.

There are intriguing potential suspects, from fellow classmates of the student to certain faculty members that might be putting a more devious plan in mind. Its unpredictable, in exactly the way a good mystery should be. You’ll be puzzling over clues and characters as you go.

The fantastical Flask with its mysterious, hoped-for healing powers ties the paranormal elements very nicely to the history of the place, and adds a certain depth to the mystery. With a hint of romance and (much) more than a hint of danger in the quest, this book, Debruce’s first in her Quicksilver Legacy Series, offers a little of something for everyone, and leaves us all waiting for book 2.

Very readable, and fans of the paranormal might want to give The Riddle of Prague a try.

She doesn’t lack courage though, and more and more, readers will find they like her.

The recurring highlight in Sterling’s Way are the light moments: subtle touches of humor, sometimes because of events, sometimes revealed in conversation. This reader simply adored Jack Sterling, start to finish. A clip from a conversation:

“…as you so delicately pointed out, I may have nearly knocked you onto your—” He raised an amused brow before he continued. “Well, let’s just say I almost knocked you down.”

Jack’s good humor and courage are well established at the start; Ms. Leone keeps the story moving, keeps the humor coming, and indeed, doesn’t let her readers down.

Cover expectations led me to expect some echo of a cheesy western, with images like the sunset-colored hair, or perhaps the ocean-blue eyes, and sure enough: At times, descriptions delve into almost a parody of the old time western, offering an element of the cheesy that seems unintended … the moments don’t spoil an otherwise good story, but the over-the-top does tend to distant the reader from the action.

A fan of the western romance will find a lot to like here, especially the truly admirable hero.

Cate struggles not to lose boyfriend Finn, who has no memory of her, while being true to her sisters. Finn is a simply wonderful, real, heartfelt character; readers will adore him.

Spotswood’s New England is both familiar and entirely strange: geographically the same and yet, a magical world that is scene to the struggles between powers.

Although part of a series, this can be read and understood as a stand-alone. Reading this makes me regret not starting at the beginning! Although a ‘paranormal,’ Sister’s Fate, so character-driven, will have a wide general appeal and might well draft a few new readers to the genre! Beautifully written.

Tina, in the midst of a sad memorial, is jolted unexpectedly into Joshua’s desperation. She can’t immediately understand the depth of the problem. She’s involved too quickly,  and she involves her cousin as well. There’s something compelling about Tina; she’s a nurse, she’s committed to help from the first, but she’s also willing to mislead to get others to help, too. Her commitment to provide aid–right from the beginning, in dubious circumstances–makes her an incredibly admirable character. She takes a risk for someone she doesn’t know. Is it her innate kindness we see at work, or does she feel a connection to Joshua from the start?

The author doesn’t give us a moment to contemplate; events keep coming at us quickly. The impact is largely in the unpredictable nature, so,  to avoid spoiler, let’s say neither thriller readers nor fans of hot romances will be disappointed.

I would have liked some reference that made it clear from the start that this was in a contemporary setting. There is something so ‘yesteryear’ in the opening, I was almost disappointed to find, later in the story, that it was set in present-day.

Quite the Catch is quite the exciting, quick read!

We can see Paul has reason to less than satisfied with life, but really, he’s a nice enough guy. Even his Mom and Gran aren’t so disagreeable. Just as you start to believe that probably nothing much is going to happen, they sit down for tea and suddenly, you realize that Aldred Chase has lured you, the reader, right in.

Paul is fast acting and circumstances are, well, reporting actual circumstances might reveal too much; but circumstances are both and strange and unpredictable all at once. No spoilers here: you have to read All Things To Everyone to find out the details. Once you reach the stage where unpredictable things start to happen, you will not be able to tear yourself away.

The story does ramble around, from hauntings to disappearances; some motivations are unclear (in fact, it isn’t always easy to tell the good guys from the bad guys) but the characters are interesting, and events unexpected!

Suffice to say All Things to Everyone is unpredictable and fun; and runs the gamut from the weird to the grotesque. This is a great fun read for anyone really, its not just for kids! Also, kudos to the cover design–it fits wonderfully!

Eliza Spooner is the main character. Her husband away at war, she has to manage home, children and a good deal of the unexpected, without him. This story might have turned into her own personal journey story for just the one main character, however, it’s honestly more of a ‘community’ journey story. Many people’s lives are interwoven here.

It is the time of the Civil War, a time when many menfolk are away from home, some families are suffering terrible loss, a time when women in the community learn to lean on one another. Sometimes, their political beliefs don’t coincide, yet trusting in ‘doing right’ helps them stand by one another.

Everyday life, from the corn-silk haired doll to some old time turns-of-phrase in conversations help create a sense of the time and the setting. Descriptions are straightforward and never slow the pace. Some characters are unexpectedly important: like little Luzena who manages to be quite clever, and Missouri Ann, who is both a victim and a heroine, in her own right.

Not only is this an epic tale of women’s struggles through this difficult time, but there are unexpected and surprising events, and we see that indeed evil does exist, and people can band together against it.

A Quilt for Christmas if dramatic and heartfelt, surprising and also warm: It will make a wonderful Christmas present…but don’t wait for Christmas to read it!
