There seems to be a small flock of folks that might just want Nikki dead…but then again, Nikki is not exactly a reliable source. How much of the threat might be imagined? As Abby begins to investigate, she still doubts how reliable the information from Nikki is.  However, she’s also soon surprised by a chance encounter with a gentleman who just might help her out or maybe come to mean a great deal more…

No spoilers here! Romance does slide in, almost by the side-door, in this charming mystery. And, it is a well-done mystery, make no mistake. Abby sets about investigating quite the cast of characters, but needs to find someone who she can trust, quickly.

Although the plot carries forward at a good pace, much of the main character’s view point is shared in too-explanatory way. Past history (like her college friendship with Nikki) is simply told, and a bit of a bore. However, the essentials of this story – plot and character – are intersting, and make up for the odd slow page here or there.

We see this main character struggle in the face of adversity and become completely attached to her, and her cause. Events of the times, especially in Europe (although not entirely), fill these pages and become incontrovertibly part of the plot. Romance its also entwined, although at first, quite uncomfortably. The awkwardness of the not-quite romance causes us to suspect, early on, a convenient event…and though it does not remain awkward, its predictable quality is regrettable, as it seems contrived.

The story is detailed, engaging and often events are quite unpredictable. The backdrop will appeal to anyone who likes to read wartime novels. Historical references seem quite accurate abound (from fashion, to cultural/sexist attitudes, to popular culture and celebrity references.) Some details of the times just make for fun reading. Perfume industry, processes and even its history all add to the story, also in a completely unanticipated way. I think historical fiction fans will enjoy this one.

Archeological study as well as mythological plays a role, as does researching what might be relevant in modern times, but there is also action, fights and car chases.

The backdrop, from the local camel market, to peaceful marches and demonstrations, to such out-of the way places ‘Tickle Gas’ in Sunburst Montana is always great, and incredibly visual. When danger marches the street of Washington DC, we gain a sense of the terrible urgency of the quest. The sense of the shifting danger – away from the old world, but not away from an old-world threat, is incredibly strong. However, it is the exceptional, unpredictable plot that makes this book an absolute page-turner. Its a great mystery, but will appeal to more than mystery fans. 5 stars; put this one right at the top of your list.

The intrigue begins before we’ve even met our leading characters.   Nick and Samantha are from different worlds, one rough and tumble, one ‘ day at the spa,’ thank you. Nick impresses from the first. He’s obviously a sympathetic, caring person. Samantha is quicker–quicker to decide, quicker to anger, yet, quicker to laugh too. She’s a very savvy professional, but also pretty quick to toss the heels and put on something comfortable. Its the little moments that make her character…while Nick is simply, incredibly manly and protective. Their clashes never fail to entertain. Quick-witted conversation is fast, believable and engaging and does not manage to hide their mutual attraction. The chemistry is real! Former cop Nick is strikingly handsome, while Samantha is lovely. One thing leads to another and…romance readers really must read! No giving the game away here, although I will say that Ms. Martin does not disappoint with the bedrooms scenes.

While Nick and Samantha’s romance might charge along as one might expect, events will keep readers guessing throughout. That unpredictable quality makes this a page-turner. While we know, from the first, about Nick’s young friend’s suspicions, it’s a while before it’s investigated.

Alaska provides a lovely backdrop for this tale, too; it’s a bit stereotypically the wilder world; fun, mysterious but somehow, still home. The limited point of view works, but irritatingly changed a bit too much for reader comfort. On the other hand, I liked the author’s attention to some details; this really is fun to read for more than one reason.

In Against the Sky Kat Martin has turned out of the recent bests in this popular genre.

Maggie Lawrence is a school teacher, set to stay with the very nice Thornhill family on their farm. The opening is pleasant, if unexciting; Maggie arrives and gets to know first the family, then the community. She also meets the rather handsome Marshall Matthews, but he hardly makes a great first impression. Still, we readers find ourselves interested. Marshall almost seems to dislike the young schoolteacher, and we start wondering… about him, and about Maggie, as well.

And Maggie is a good one for finding out information. She knows how to ask questions, although her questions might be one of the problems. She’s inquisitive about the exact things readers wonder about. Her position in the household and with the youngsters seems to land her awful close to ‘drama,’ even when its nothing to do with her. There are small surprises and, although we readers see how we might like things to go, events are unpredictable.

Secondary characters are well developed. The Thornhill’s young daughter Emma is an important character, while still being, quite believably, a child. She’s a very engaging and well-thought out supporting character. The backdrop, a farming town in mid-twentieth century, is equally pleasant. It’s a pleasant country and McGregor gives us lots of pleasant descriptions–in all, ‘pleasant’ might be describe this novel.

Perhaps a short passage might convey the sense and pace of this best: “They skirted a field of wheat nearly ripe and ready for the harvesting crew that would soon make the rounds. A fenced pasture ran along the other side. A roan cow tinkled her bell at them as she lazed in the afternoon sun, chewing her cud. They approached the farmyard by crossing a high-plank bridge over a…” it’s utterly charming, and you can easily picture them walking along, can’t you? On the other hand, it is hardly fast-paced.

I’m giving this an overall 5 out of 5 stars. I didn’t intend to–it is not exactly the most popular genre these days–but I find I can’t fault it: story, style and editing, all top-notch and I must say that I simply love the cover. Do read.

This is unexpected, and honestly, much of the happenings from the large to the small, are unpredictable and surprising.

The duke himself, who starts off so impossibly shallow discovers… some remnant of decency, is it? Some recollection of his own childhood vision of the world? There are the ‘truly despicable’ out there and we’ll certainly get the chance to compare! To say more would be to spoil the story, but indeed, neither of our main characters are as simple as they first appear. Readers will find themselves wanting to know more – and yet more. The small surprises are a delight.

This is not fast-paced as has become so trendy of late; and it is all the better for that. Readers will find they enjoy the thoughtful reflection, as well as thorough description. It is all so much more revealing about the characters. The Duke’s Wager has heartfelt moments as well as fun, unpredictable action, all in the setting we fans of the English Historical so leave to read. Do add to your “to read” list.

We quickly discover that she considers herself a journalist though she seems more of a restaurant critic. She dresses well but is underprepared–not impressive.

Still, she has friends. She can rely on her pal Dario, who teases but will help her out. Conversations are quick, witty and believable; typical party fair. Mandy seems a bit like a fish out of water, yet it’s fun to follow her around this restaurant’s big opening party. She becomes a bit more human, especially after we learn she’s agreed to be a last-minute bridesmaid for her sister, and suddenly the whole dynamic changes.

Mandy, we soon discover, is more than the glamor gal we see on the outside, and chef Jake Pearson gains a little inkling of the same thing. Their meeting includes a funny little twist (no spoilers here…but it IS a case of serendipity) but this matters little: by this point, we readers are truly hooked. Mandy may be able to carry off the black dress and stilettos, but she’s also got good intentions, and dreams for the future–dreams that include Paris. A certain coincidence might help out the ‘love story’ but at the same time…those very dreams threaten the whole thing.

Her Sister’s Wedding is a great story, a look at a certain sophisticated lifestyle, and the discovery of some very ‘real’ and engaging main characters. The story line is quick and unpredictable and in many ways just plain fun. The use of incredibly long run-on sentences may be a stylistic choice but are occasionally mind-boggling enough to test your attention span- my one complaint. 4 stars, for a good overall read.

The local conditions are appalling–the sounds and smells and destruction of bombing raids, the fear and the anxiety of what might be coming next is incredibly real and believable. Miller’s distinctive, no nonsense, straight-forward style is …well, it is very like the voice we’d expect from his lead character: Honest, descriptive, true.

Characters, from the hastily-made friends to the people on the street, and the interactions with those but briefly met in trying circumstances, all are wonderfully believable. We follow George from Singapore toward the hope of safety, via cart, boat and even plane; and every moment, we hope Lady Jane might notice his heroic actions through his efforts to save others.

Sloppy layout left the text with some odd spacing issues, and while not terribly distracting, this work deserves better. This is a gripping, believable, alarming yet heartwarming read. This is the best story I have read in a very long time.

Amy and Mark are in love…at least, we know for sure Amy is in love with her wonderful, super-sexy husband, who appears to be as happy as she; for the few moments we see them together. Their magical time together might well be ‘the deception’ here, as much as anything; for too soon, she’s talking to a detective and trying to understand what might have happened. Mark is gone.

Startled, suspicions, and intrigued: we readers are hooked from the start. There must be some explanation. Amy is no fool, yet seems confused by events. As she begins to puzzle out what happened, she uses everything, even her own condition, as clues to possible events. Others are looking at her possible motivations, so not only does she want to find her husband, it is looking more and more like she needs to find him, to clear herself.

Some secondary characters are a bit wooden, but others, like Aunt Remy and a couple friends are well done; clearly ‘characters’ in their own right. As Amy regains her memory, we readers get a better look at her working life, and start to develop suspicions of our unknown. Her friends are also involved, and figure out some possible scenarios, themselves. Although the plot charges forward like any good thriller, truly the ‘love’ part of it all–as her chief motivation–shines throughout. Romance fans will not be disappointed.

Although it is unclear when her memory problems began, leaving many possibilities open; the clue-hunting, critical mystery-fan in me still admits this is both well-done and clever. Do plan to read.

Emmaline Nelson and her sister Birdie grow up in the hard, cold rural Lutheran world of strict parents, strict milking times, and strict morals. Set in Minnesota mid twentieth century, A Fireproof Home for the Bride is a dark, reflective novel of one woman’s struggle to … evolve, I guess… past her upbringing. This isn’t so much coming of age as it is the escape from a lifestyle. The worst of it isn’t that there is rife racism and sexism, it is that it is so much the norm. Although hate-driven action is there, the everyday hate, seeing it simply as ‘the way it was,’ seems somehow very much worse.

Emmaline Nelson grows up in this world that makes the modern reader cringe, then very nearly squirm. We wonder if it could have been true, and how any person could even hope become a ‘someone else,’ a person with a different outlook, coming from such origins. The story does provoke thought, along with the unease. However, the writing is rather wordy, and if literary equals boring, then many a whole passage is very, very literary. However, characters are well-developed and incredibly diverse. There is hatred, expectations; a whole life planned and caged and the people around Emmy are all part of it. Yet, some of those people have a surprising side: a secret, or are simply more sympathetic side than we first suspect. The quality of characters, or of our main character’s development, is certainly excellent. The overall style of writing is top-notch as well.

A Fireproof Home for the Bride is certainly more reflective than gripping. Sadness pervades the story, and ultimately, it is disturbing. It is a valuable read, but I cannot say it was entirely enjoyable.
