Book Two in the Phaze Rocks: Streets of Fire Series

Detective Sam Nielson has always been a casual, no strings type of guy. He loves New York City and the diversity of men it offers him. He also loves his job in South Bronx’s forty-first precinct, affectionately nicknamed ‘Fort Apache’ for it’s violent history.

Sam’s caught off guard when handsome detective Bobby Rodriguez transfers to Fort Apache. The two are immediately thrown together on a high profile murder investigation. Their fast brewing passion makes concentrating on work difficult. It becomes even tougher when Sam discovers what type of relationship Bobby has in mind. He’s a Dominant, looking for a submissive. It’s a whole new world for Sam, who has to decide if that’s the type of life he wants to live. But first he has to survive the murderer they’re tracking, who’s now after them.

Two hot police officers in lust is enough to attract any reader of M/M romance. That we have an interesting reversal here, with the younger man taking charge and the older one discovering his submissive side, only makes the proposition more interesting.

Sam sees himself as a jaded player, been there, done that, with an inability to sustain a relationship. He tells himself he likes it this way but the author gives us hints early on of a growing loneliness. He’s a smart-mouthed tough guy, never at a loss for a wisecrack, and yet when a man he finds truly attractive walks up to say hello, he can’t find a word to say. Since the story is told exclusively from Sam’s point of view (which I thought worked well for a short piece) we never get into Bobby’s mind but enough of a mixture of Alpha confidence and social uncertainty come through to make him a likeable character and a good match for Sam.

The interaction between these two is well done. I did blink a couple of times in surprise at how fast they fell into bed but it was with a male sort of directness which worked for Sam. The investigation side of the plot was a little thin – I’d hoped for a more interesting resolution with the build up of wealth and possible crime connections. The police work really acts as a backdrop to the real plot, though, that of Sam overcoming his fears and the inhibitions he didn’t even know he had for this steamy-hot, demanding yet patient Dom. I would have liked to have seen a little more from Sam’s past to explain his willing and swift acquiescence to being dominated. (A stronger lover who wrestled him to the bed and held him down, perhaps? Some moment when he found himself overwhelmed and liked it?)

The love scenes are melt-your-screen hot and the rather sweet way Bobby leads Sam from one thing to another is well worth the read. This is a smooth, enjoyable read, without a lot of bumps or hitches along the way and I’d be interested in seeing Jenna’s work in some longer pieces in the future.

In this somewhat complicated story of love and betrayal, the author uses a story we all know very well: young love lost and the one who got away, but she also gives it an ironic and fascinating twist by turning this love story into a new kind of vampire tale.

G.A. Hauser is one of the best M/M authors I’ve ever read and I have always enjoyed her past works. I enjoyed Vampire Nights and it’s twist on the vampire tale though I didn’t find it as riveting as some of her other books. For those who enjoy vamp stories and M/M liaisons as well as M/F romance, this is the book you’ve been waiting for.

Justin Alexander Taylor had always dreamed of a life at sea. Living on the tip of England’s coastline, Justin escaped one night from his abusive father and stowed away on a ship. What Justin didn’t realize was the sloop, His Revenge, was a pirate ship, out for a broadside and gold.

Captain Richard Jones escaped his own life of hell with the British Royal Navy. Leading the group of ragged men to their next adventure, Captain Jones never expected a stowaway to emerge from the bowels of the ship while they were asea.

As the captain sought to protect Justin from the violent crew, a friendship blooms between him and his young charge. Soon immersed in bloody battles with Spanish galleons, the two men form a close bond which is about to be tested.

Justin knew he would be in for an adventure when he left England, he just didn’t know he would find the love of his life in the process.

It starts out with a certain amount of promise – young Justin stows away Jim Hawkins-style in an apple barrel on a ship captained by the gorgeous slab of beefcake on the wrong side of the law, Richard Jones.

While there’s a certain charm to the tale of (probably) doomed love and high-seas adventure, I will admit that I found myself wondering throughout the book whether I was supposed to be taking it seriously or not. With all the ‘aarghs’ and ‘blimey’s’ and the odd bits of campy slapstick thrown in here and there, it almost felt like a send up of swashbucklers, sort of a M/M Pirates of Penzance, if you will. Somehow I fear this was not the case.

Hauser’s writing is as good as ever, her descriptive passages evocative and striking (“Her double masts stabbed the starlit sky with two towering black needles of hardwood.” – very nice) but I didn’t get the same feeling of connection with the characters that I do with her contemporary pieces. Justin was a bit too clueless and pouty, Richard just a bit too brooding and uneven as a hero, gallant, honor-bound gentleman one moment, cold-hearted murderer the next.

Though not as strong as many of Hauser’s contemporary stories, Pirates is a quick read with a plot that moves right along from one disaster to another and some lovely, tender moments in between. Best place for this book? It’s a fun summer read for the beach where you have the waves as accompaniment for the maritime theme.

Damien Hall has never done an honest day’s work in his life. On his own from a young age, his street wiles got him by until he ended up in Corcoran State Prison for theft. Five years later, he’s moved in with a man who only wants him for one thing, nightly hot sex. But he’s off the streets, and Damien thinks the trade-off is worth it.

Travis Slater wrangles horses for a living, and wants to wrangle Damien in his off hours. He sees potential in the man who suffers from extremely low self esteem, and quickly falls in love with him. He hopes to take Damien and leave, knowing they can make their own way in the world.

Damien isn’t so sure, and is terrified at the thought of being homeless again. When his employer admits the real reason Damien was hired, it’s decision time. Do what’s easy or do what’s right? Only Damien can decide.

Damien Hall’s naiveté in trusting Charles, a man who uses him as a sex toy, is the mark of a desperately seeking soul. Damien’s first goal in life seems to be having a roof over his head and food to eat. Giving rise to any spinal wound or viagra cheap india syndrome. As tough as the protagonist tries to be, the street kid who just wants to be loved keeps popping through—and that’s what makes this short read, by Jenna Byrnes, work. On his own from a young age, all of Damien’s street wiles have gotten him nothing but a stretch in Corcoran State Prison for theft. Five years later, out of jail, with the stigma of being an ex-con, he believes that he has only one sellable skill—and the reader is definitely convinced that he excels in this area as Damien gives and receives rough, satisfying sex.

Author Jenna Byrnes has taken 55 pages and created a memorable story that leaves one pondering the inequities of life, the harsh trade-offs one might embrace to survive, and why it is that male on male sex is totally arousing.

If the story has any weakness, it would be the bothersome dialogue between Damien and his new lover. The conversations were cliché; discussions between Damien and Travis Slater seemed more like two awkward teens first meeting, than lusty adult males. But, the robust sexual content was definitely enough to forgive the forgettable chit-chat.

Jenna Byrnes has written a short story with a hot, tightly constructed plot, clean editing and an easy to read style. Never Say Goodbye, will tease all of your senses, not just your libido. All things considered, it is a very satisfying read and this reviewer anticipates enjoying future books by Ms. Byrnes.

Handsome ex-cop Frank McGuire is on a quest to locate his dead partner’s missing son. Rand Brennan has an identity issue, exercabated since the death of his father. Hoping to find himself, Rand drops out of college, takes to the streets, and doesn’t realize he’s embroiled in duplicity and murder. In order to save Rand, Frank must confront the nefarious killers and…confront his long-suppressed feelings for Rand.

Elements: scenes of intense sexual activity

Frank McGuire communes with the dead, which comes in handy since he’s a Private Detective who has just been asked to help with The Black Rail case. Seven young women are dead and the police don’t have a lot to go on, so they’re counting on ex-cop Frank to give them at least a clue.

The only problem Frank has is that he’s always been attracted to Rand. Once he tracks Rand down and the teenage boy he remembers is now a muscular and gorgeous man of twenty-two, Frank’s attraction just might get the better of him.

I really enjoyed this story. I like crime stories anyway, but throw in this kind of heat between an ex-cop and a young man in trouble, and the sex reaches new levels. Keta Diablo writes a wonderful crime thriller that delves not into the mind of a killer, but into the mind of a former cop who communes with the dead who help him catch the killer. The author’s knowledge of psychic phenomena transfers to this story with insight and believability. There is just the right amount of suspense and drama, even though the storyline was just a little predictable with the little sister’s involvement with the killer, but doesn’t distract the reader in any way.

I recommend this short story for anyone who is looking for a walk on the dark side.

Her head says at the end of it, she can just walk away. Her heart isn’t so sure.

A Bid For Love is a delightfully deceptive story. Being only 26 pages, I did not expect to read a concise, well written story of love lost and then found again but it showed me that looks are deceiving.

The story itself is about a deception that was played by a minor character for her families benefit but that also deceived our heroine. The instrument that brings our main characters together again is a painting by a grandmother. Virginia Gleeson’s paintings were not what one would expect and they were sold off for gambling debts when an uncle deceived his sister and niece and sold them.

The characters of Erika and Ryan were beautifully fleshed out. He sees his opportunity to acquire more when he offers the painting to Erika in exchange for 48 hours of her being his slave. I could tell that he really cared about Erika’s feelings when he stopped his games.

The way the past break up was explained was done in an ingenious way. I could not be mad at either Ryan or Erika. The well written plot and emotional dialog had me glued to my chair to see what occured next. A Bid For Love is another fantastic story by Ms. Houston that I highly recommend reading.

The follow-up to Aneshu! Renowned as the greatest trickster in the realm, the actor Aneshu travels to the distant desert outpost of Malassar to spy upon an unscrupulous vizier who has eliminated every previous spy planted in his household. No one said espionage was easy, but then, no one warned Aneshu that Amiru ked Shaskan was young, devastatingly handsome, and as dangerous as a cobra. To survive, the actor must turn to his most famous role, and perhaps do the unthinkable.

In a return to the desert kingdom of Tajhaan, Bryce returns to a tale of intrigue and danger (hooray!) While Bryce’s sweet, quiet romances are lovely; she truly excels as a storyteller with hidden menace, suspicion and high drama. Looking for a traditional romance? A story based on sex? Look elsewhere, dear traveler. This is a different kettle of fish.

Aneshu, thrust straight into peril he neither asks for nor understands fully when the High Prince requests he play the greatest role of his life, as a spy, is as compelling a character (often more so) than any dozen, everyday Alpha males. His story catches the reader by the nape and shakes hard, like the Jackal god he sometimes channels onstage. Certainly, he’s the Alpha in his own relationship with a younger actor, but while they have a prestigious and somewhat protected position as entertainers, they are still slaves, at the mercy of the whims of more powerful men. Aneshu has no choice but to agree and leave his home and his lover behind to go into a situation he knows may kill him. No choice or so it seems. But this is the key and the core to this story, choices and our perceptions of them. For a man without choices, Aneshu is presented with a feast of them, from the beautiful young dancers he travels with to the amoral but handsome and sexually magnetic vizier who is the subject of his mission, every word, every action, represents choice for good or ill, the high ground or the moral sinkhole, and, ultimately, life or death. Beautifully written in a rhythm often reminiscent of old tales and legends, Bryce consistently writes in a literate and flowing style, easy to follow but challenging the senses all at once.

In the end, without giving too much away, Aneshu must face himself and his choices as both a man and the avatar of a living god. While this is not a traditional romance (boy meets, loses and regains boy) it is a fascinating twist on the pursuer/pursued plot line, sometimes dark and often tense, but with enough lighter moments to keep it from being bleak. Unlike some of Bryce’s recent stories, the ending here felt perfect, not rushed or abrupt. An excellent, engaging read, her return to high drama is something to be relished.

It doesn’t take Mia very long to figure out that things aren’t what they appear at this ranch and one of the guests points to her and says ‘it’s Betty’. Mia suddenly finds herself back in 1943 and staying in her grandmother’s old room at the ranch. The author throws in a nice plot twist here. It seems that it’s not just any day in 1943 but the same day her grandmother was found murdered and Jake Sands is accused of the crime.
