I’m a sucker for stories about NASA and spaceflight. I’d watched the movie that accompanied this book, but I wanted to get every detail. This book does just that. I learned about flights made by the Russians, flights made by lesser known (to me) astronauts. I had no idea some of the flights were marred by problems, or how some were a little scary. I felt like I was riding with the astronauts and immersed in their world.

I almost can’t put into words how I felt about this book. I enjoyed it and while it’s not easy reading, you have to go back and make sense sometimes of what they’re talking about–especially if you don’t understand some of the terminology–but it’s worth the time. I enjoyed every page and am glad I found this book.

If you’re into anything astronaut and spaceflight, then this might be the book for you.

I picked up this book because I’ve been on a historical binge. Okay, maybe it’s more recent historical, but still. This book fit right into what I wanted to read.

This book is listed as haunting. On some levels it is. I mean, to know these women were in a situation where they knew only about a third of what was going on and still going about their business…it’s crazy. I enjoyed reading about their struggles, hardships, thoughts and how even back then, women could be catty to each other when they had little else to do.

There is a certain rhythm to this book, though. It’s not written from any one person’s point of view. It’s an original, but if the reader expects to learn how these people lived from one person, then the reader is out of luck. I have to admit, it’s a little difficult. I could, yet I couldn’t, identify with the characters because there were so few named.

If you’re interested in reading a book about Los Alamos from a different point of view, then this might be the book for you.

This book tells the story of the Biltmore through the years, the way it’s changed and just how expensive it can be to keep up the house.

One thing about this book, the author not only discusses the house, but the branch of the Vanderbilt family that created it. I got to learn about the people and the home. I liked learning about the peripheral people as well–who were the movers and shakers at the house, who helped make the house fabulous. I can’t imagine my day to day life having so many fascinating people who are historical figures just being part of it. There are a ton of details and this isn’t an easy read, but it is fascinating.

If you want a book about a place you can just about only dream of, then this might be the book for you.

Now I know The Phantom of the Opera has a kind of stalkerish feel to it. It does. Plus, trying to make the story seem a little less so is a rather hard row to hoe. I get it. This one… the writing captured me and I had to know how this story would end. I liked Christine and Erik well enough, but there were times when it was almost too much of a stretch to buy in. I wanted to root for them, but it was tough. He could be very cold to her and she wanted more than he could give. I wished they’d been more communicative, but such is life. It did mirror life in that way.

If you’re looking for a hot read that’s flavored by Phantom and Star, then this might be the book for you. I’m glad I picked this book up. Worth the read.

I picked this book up because it’s on the list of books we’re considering reading for the local reading group. I’d read The Girls of Atomic City and enjoyed it, so I was looking forward to this take on Oak Ridge. I’m glad I picked up this book. Really. I have some quibbles with it, but it’s a quick read and an interesting point of view on life at Oak Ridge.

One of my quibbles is with the characters. I didn’t really root for any of them. I didn’t see any of them–save for a secondary one–as someone I’d like to have for a friend. I did get emotionally involved in the story, so that’s going for the book. I wanted to clunk a couple of the characters on the head. But the thing is, some of the characters were rather immature. I get they were young when they arrived at Oak Ridge, the naivete, and in some ways negativity, made me want to skip pages.

Still, this is an interesting take on what the people went through in Oak Ridge. Racial bias, loose-lips-sink-ships, being wary of everyone…it’s vividly told.

If you’re looking for a book that’s different and involves the work at Oak Ridge, then this might be the book for you.

I wasn’t sure what I was in for when I picked up this book. First, it’s short. I knew that. But there’s more than a short story here. There’s a pretty significant plot. The characters are broken and need redemption. I liked that about the story.

The relationship between Lucia and Ronan is interesting and contentious. In such a short story, there are a lot of characters and these two needed to stand out. They do, but at times it was hard to keep everyone straight. I liked the chemistry between Ronan and Lucia and look forward to more for these two.

If you want a book chock full of backstory and perfect for a sequel, then this might be the short story for you.

I picked this novella up because the cover intrigued me. I’m glad I did. It was worth the half hour of reading. I had to know what would happen next. This is a short story, so there isn’t much time to get invested with the characters. I see it’s part of a series, so I’ll check out the others for sure.

There are a few quibbles. There is a lot of telling in this story. I felt like I was watching it happen, rather than being in the head of any of the characters. The characters are supposed to be hard and tough, yet they spend quite a bit of time getting emotional. It was odd, but kind of worked. There were a few phrases used that took me out of the story. It might not have worked for me, but might be fine for other readers. The plot is a tad contrived, too. I’m not sure a CIA agent would just stroll into a prince’s life, but it was good for a few minutes of escapism.

While I wouldn’t classify this as a romance, but rather a hot read with sexy characters, it’s worth the time to read and I’m interested in seeing where this series goes. Check it out.
