There’s a precarious balance between being emotional and overemotional, between effective drama and overflowing melodrama. This tale dances on that knife’s edge. At times I felt Drew was being a bit over-the-top, crying all the time. Once or twice in a story is fine; after that it becomes excessive and the man feels, well, less manly. That constant crying never strikes me as true for a male character, which is why I couldn’t give this a full five stars. That endless blubbering just took me out of the story.

One thing I found pretty good about the plot twists was that Cal does finally decide Drew has hurt him enough, and leaves. This was a good choice because had he stuck it out with someone who was never going to give him his heart in return would have made Cal far too idealistic in the realism sense. No one really has that kind of patience when heartbroken. For me, that moment was realistic, forcing Drew to take action to change his life. Unyielding support would not have yielded the same results, I think.

Another thing I liked were the supporting characters, Chloe and Brett. They behaved like real people. Chloe has been Drew’s best friend since childhood but even she has her limits of what she can bear from a sullen Drew, and Brett loses patience with a moping Cal, even though they are best friends as well. The realism of friendship, where sometimes you have to kick them in the rear-end, was a nice touch to the tale.

Overall, I found this story to be immersive, sexy, and emotional, mostly in a good way. I was invested in the characters, and the plot moved forward at a reasonable pace. So I recommend this to all those who love M/M romances with emotional depth and lots of hot and heavy moments.

Because they were kept apart through most of the book, I was left disappointed.

This story has a lot of other characters, which is both good and bad. Good because no relationship happens in a social vacuum. Especially in Victorian high society where decorum is the key and marital alliances unite bloodlines—and coffers. Plus, all these characters have unique personalities of their own instead of being just flat names in the background. Bad because Henry and Richard spend most of their time in the book engaged with other people and their messes. When that continued on to the last fifty pages or so, I lost all hope of an actual deepening of Henry and Richard’s relationship. Their confessions of love no longer felt believable. The sensual fervor, however, still did, because the beginning of the book showed so well the change both men felt at their one night together.

The historical context, the settings, the dialogue, and even the personalities of the cast—they all rang true. Gastrell seems to have an intimate knowledge of this era with all its intricacies. To be honest, once I started reading, I couldn’t stop. This tale brought out a whole host of emotions from me, from delight to frustration, from elation to sorrow, from anger to numbness. And that is how I judge a good book, one that draws me in, and doesn’t let go until the very last line.

Overall, this is very good historical romance, one that I have no doubt I’ll remember for a long time to come. The sensual scenes and the continuous emotional tension running throughout the tale was indeed very well told and shown. I was fully immersed into the tale, and I recommend this to all lovers of M/M and historical romances.

Hannah is a wonderful character. She’s smart, strong, and driven. Plus, she embraces her feelings, in good and bad. On the one hand she seeks vengeance over the wrongs done to her, but on the other she feels a strong bond to the fallen hero, Sebastian. At one time they were intimately close and spoke vows of forever. Then tragedy struck, and both were cast into the wind, to try and find a place in a cold, cruel world, but are unable to shake the ghosts of the past.

We get varying points of view, one chapter at a time. Sometimes the points of view mix unexpectedly, which distracted me at times. Nonetheless, the narrative was alluring, and I turned pages onward to learn more. Sebastian’s cold, reserved nature serves as an intriguing counter balance to Hannah’s fiery fury. In fact, they seem well suited for one another.

The content of the story is more than laced with erotic interludes. The plot is filled with sensual scenes, as befits a man wanting to bed a ghost from the past and a woman pretending to be a whore. As the past events slowly unravel, we learn how things became the way they are today. That slow progression was done well, one piece at a time in the puzzle.

The writing is extremely sensuous, and I found every scene to serve a purpose. This wasn’t sex for the sake of sex alone. Each moment moved the plot forward, as the past became the present. I find North’s writing quite able and descriptive in the right places.

Without revealing the ending as a spoiler, I will nonetheless say that the overly rosy and sugary ending spoiled some of the enjoyment of the story. The leap from utter misery to perfect happiness just didn’t ring true. A woman’s worth seemed lessened by the physical change, and you’ll understand that reference once you read the last few plot twists.

Overall, this is a definitely worthwhile read. If you enjoy tortured heroes and the women who heal them with tempests and fury, you’ll love this. For the sensual scenes alone, this piece of historical erotica will titillate you from beginning to end.

Still, as simple erotic tales these achieve their goal in entertaining and titillating.

The first meeting is insta-love inspired by fate. Raj immediately believes Andrew is his one true love, fated to be his, and after a night of lovemaking Andrew agrees. Due to the length of this bar rendezvous and subsequent sex scene, the characters remain one-dimensional, without much depth to them. I wasn’t emotionally invested in the characters due to their lack of depth. If the word destiny hadn’t been thrown around so much, this would have been just another hookup at a bar, no muss, no fuss. Raj’s parents surprise him during a party Andrew has set up for Raj’s 21 birthday—and they act badly, looking down their noses at Andrew being older. With their first fight, Andrew and Raj’s characters gain a modicum of depth. Nonetheless, this middle story presents new, unappealing side characters, and because of the fight and subsequent separation, there aren’t many happy-bubbly emotions happening here. The party itself had some confusing elements but this part of the story does end on a positive note. In short, this felt like a slice of life piece and a more memorable part of the book.

Raj is independently wealthy but Andrew works hard as a lawyer. Raj wants them to have a vacation, so off they go to Hawaii. Not much going on here plot-wise. Just nudity, sex, sightseeing, and sunbathing. Again, no real deepening of personalities. Frolicking and enjoying oneself are the themes here, and the overall tone is light and fun. The best part of the book for readers who don’t require too much depth.

TC Blue has written a relatively engaging story involving the same characters meeting, falling in love, and establishing themselves as a couple. This story is plot-light, but as a three act erotic quickie this works fine. The writing is efficient and to the point, plus sensual and sexy in the right spots. Besides, I kind of liked Juniper, even with all her vulnerabilities. They also have distinctly different personalities. Andy is more action-oriented and wicked, while Hamish is more controlled and intellectual. The basic plot is not very original either, with predestined mates, a monster from the past who has a serious beef with the heroine (he was a truly despicable character), and ménage sex and shifter claiming that solves everything. Also, there are quite a few editing snafus in the text, with  wrong word use of things like your and you’re, which are not the same. Plus, there is a heck of a lot of comma weirdness, making the sentences sometimes so unreadable you have to go over them several times. This naturally takes the reader out of the story and back to awareness of reading a book.

We don’t really get to know Juniper as a person with dreams of her own which is a shame because it perpetuates the image that women’s sole goal in life is to act girly, fall in love, have phenomenal sex, get married, have a brood of kids, and settle down to do that, and nothing else. That strikes me, an educated woman with a career, as outdated. Still, it can very well be the dream for some women, and Juniper seems to be among them. When she discovers her inner strength in a safe environment, she blossoms. Black Town welcomes her with open arms, which was nice, adding a we-make-our-own-family dimension to the story.

Now that we got the negative out of the way, the story has a certain lure to it. Even though I felt like I’d read the story before, I still liked it. The continuous sensual feel, the slow revelations of what is happening behind the scenes, the threat of going mad without a mate, and all that action made me turn pages in a rush to find out more. In fact, this tale is full of action. The plot is fast-paced, while the danger gathers at the end, when Juniper is in mortal jeopardy, and her panther men get the chance to be heroic and powerful.

Australia is not a setting I’ve read much about, only a handful of romance books over the years. I found the contrast between city and country, day and night, shack and mansion quite thrilling, especially because of the Australian background. It added some spice to the tale, I admit. The paranormal setting I assume was explained in detail in the first book of the series. I personally would have liked to know more about Black Town which seemed like a quaint little town, with a huge majority of feline shifters. This setting definitely has its own charm.

All in all, this is a sensual story with suspense and romance in balanced quantities. Recommended for all fans of paranormal shifter fans and ménage admirers. You won’t go amiss with this one.
