Interview and Giveaway: Kimber Li

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Kimber Li. Ask Kimber a question and you might win a copy of Newblood & the Ice Princess, the first book in her Tales of the Elven Princesses series. Kimber Li is actually her penname – Kimber is the first part of her real name, Kimberly. She added Li because she loves Chinese names and Kimber Li is sort of her first name spelled differently.

She’s from Alaska and the Pacific Northwest in general and told me that she loves the awesome wilderness.

“I feel safe and free there and inspiration is all around me.”

When Kimber was young, she wanted to be a mommy and an author.

“Nailed it! And I’d just like to say I resent the implication that being a mommy is not enough to be a powerful woman,” she said. “Absolutely ridiculous. The Maternal Instinct is one of the most powerful forces in the universe. Just ask Mollie Weasley.”

Kimber used to get emotionally overwhelmed by a story and would simply stop writing. However, she learned if she switched to a second project, she could keep writing. The two project must be very different like fantasy and contemporary romance. She finds music extremely helpful when she is switching back and forth between these fictional worlds. If she’s writing contemporary romance, she’ll listen to “Just the Way You Are” by Bruno Mars and, if she’s writing in the Ice Princess’ world, she listens to “Once Upon a Dream” by Lana Del Rey.

Kimber told me that her Ice Princess’ universe actually started out with a scene which has not made it into the stories. “In face,” she explained, “it may never make it into the actual published stories. Which leads me scratching my head, wondering what the heck.”

As far as the title goes, she typically comes up with something having to do with the heroine and her big conflict. In Newblood and the Ice Princess, the heroine is the Ice Princess (the elven heiress) and Newblood refers to the vampire-like creatures who are addicted to her diabetic blood.

“If you could spend a day with anyone from history, dead or alive,” I wondered, “who would it be, and what would you do? What would you ask them?”

“Well, I did have this story idea for Bianca (sister of Ophelia, heroine of Newblood and the Ice Princess where she jumps back in time to ancient Greece where she lands on the mythical island of Atlantis and is mistaken for Aphrodite, goddess of love, and must find the real one and convince her to stop jerking humans around ‘cause that’s just not nice. Of course, Aphrodite is technically a myth, but there is some historical fact behind every myth.”

Since Newblood and the Ice Princess is a young adult book, I asked Kimber how she keeps her finger on the pulse of today’s youth?

“Easy. I gave birth to them. Okay, the birth part involved a lot of pushing and screaming, but the rest has been mostly a lot of fun.”

Finally, I asked, “Say your publisher has offered to fly you anywhere in the world to do research on an upcoming book, where would you most likely want to go?”

“New Zealand,” she answered promptly. “In fact, I don’t have a story set there, but I would be extremely tempted to lie and say I did. Even though I don’t lie. Ever. Let’s just say this question presents a major moral dilemma for me and leave it at that. Did you know HERCULES THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS, WILLOW, and XENA WARRIOR PRINCESS, as well as THE LORD OF THE RINGS and THE HOBBIT movies were all filmed in New Zealand?”

Ophelia longs to be free, free of Diabetes, free to attend the college of her choice, free of her monstrous ex-boyfriend.

About the Author: Kimber Li bandaged her fingers and pounded out her first novel on a manual typewriter when she was eleven years old. In the years which followed, she decided she wanted a large family of her own. When the time came, she moved to Alaska to find someone tough enough for the job of building it with her. Pregnancy hormones kicked her imagination into overdrive and she began to pursue publication. Although she achieved ePublication years ago with three Young Adult stories and one Sweet Romance, she discovered Indie Pub was a lot more fun for her and never looked back. She now makes her home in the Pacific Northwest with her husband of multiple decades, four children who are now taller than her and want a puppy, two spoiled rotten cats, and a bunch of chickens who are nothing but freeloading slackers.

10 Reasons to Date an Elf & 3 Reasons Why You Really Should Not

Some of the Reasons refer to someone else’s famous story which contains an elf or elves. It may be a book, movie, or children’s story. To win the prize, correctly name each of the stories each of the Reasons refers to. The Commenter with the most correct guesses wins.

1) Elves don’t shed all over your carpet, like werewolves.
2) Elves don’t suddenly get a wild case of the munchies when you’re making out, like vampires.
3) Your potential future children won’t have four paws or extra-sharp canine teeth, but they will have pointy ears which is kinda cute if you ask me.
4) Elves are excellent with shoe-care. They can even make a perfect pair just for you.
5) Elves can easily pass as Vulcans, so long as you don’t crack a joke.
6) Elves are always ready for the Renaissance Fair.
7) No one slays spiders quite so well, nor looks so good while they’re doing it.
8) Elves are so great at housekeeping, they’ve been enslaved at times for that very purpose. Which is sad and bad. So don’t do that. Just be grateful you’ll never need to load the dishwasher. Also, be a good sport and offer to polish his or her armor.
9) The most attractive elves live in treehouses which is super cool.
10) You’ll always get tons of gifts on Christmas morning.

3 Reasons Why Not
11) Their hair will always look better than yours. Always. Sorry about that.
12) An elf would totally not understand your aversion to constant winter.
13) Your potential in-laws might be really weird or even completely psycho. Especially when fine jewelry is involved. Apparently, they really have a thing for the bling.

“Wait, you know?” Bianca sat too, hard, lower lip drooping and trembling.

Mom scooted in her chair to the table. “I did fall in love with a Pureblood Elf, the freakin’ Ice Prince of the Borean Realm, no less. He was…dazzling.” She rubbed her forehead in one palm. “Foreplay with an elf can go on for weeks. I miss that.”

“Ew!” Bianca’s face went green. “Gross. Mom, geez.”

“Your father and grandmother thought they could handle local security,” their mother continued, undeterred. “That’s why we hid you girls here, it’s the same latitude as the Borean Realm between Iceland and Poland. But, then, he got sick and…he wasn’t supposed to die, elves aren’t supposed to be vulnerable to human diseases. Grandma couldn’t…get here.” She winced. “Oh, God, what am I going to do?”

“We’re freakin’ elf princesses?” Bianca deflated in her chair. “Well, that explains why we love Christmas so much.”

“Not that kind of elf.” With an audible groan, Mom collapsed her face on her folded arms on her dinner plate.

“Elf princesses.” Adrian chuckled.

“Vegetable stir-fry over rice.” Ophelia dropped the sizzling wok on the table in front of him. She pulled her hair back from her pointed ear. “Yep, elf princesses.”

“Elf-freakin’-princesses, ya pirate.” Bianca pulled hair away from her own ear.

“Oh, crap.”
