I found the start of this story a little disorientating. It starts in the middle of a fight while Max and Pete are driving home, slightly drunk and both angry and then the car accident happens. I personally struggled a little to understand exactly what was going on in the situation the story had opened up into. Even understanding that their marriage was a sham Max seemed to genuinely dislike his husband (Max even uses the words “hate” in his thoughts in relation to Pete) and the argument is quite bitter. I didn’t really grasp why – if there was so much tension and anger built up between the two men – they had continued on as long as they did. I also didn’t really feel there was a solid explanation why Max didn’t leave Pete all those weeks Pete was in a coma. For me, personally, the opening and first chapter or so were quite confusing and it took me a lot longer than normal to really get into the characters and story itself.

As the story progressed, however, a lot of the relationship dynamics are explained. I found the rest of this story an interesting and complicated discovery of how Pete and Max’s relationship not only began and reached the point we started at on page 1, but also how they each could discover a way to move forward. I have to admit a part of me didn’t find Pete and Max’s relationship very healthy – certainly, in my opinion, it’s not a traditional “romantic” relationship. But Pete and Max were both fully capable, grown men, and discovering why they stayed with each other, and how they came to rely on the other and their relationship was a very different and interesting read. As they’re both recovering from the accident for most of the story there’s not a lot of physical romance between the men, this story focuses more on the two men’s personalities and the relationship itself, which I thought was a good thing. I feel that had the author adding sex into the mix between them both it could have been slightly too charged and I partly feel that would have only added to my confusion and the murkiness of the men’s relationship.

Readers looking for an intense and deeply relationship-centric style of story – or possibly a hurt/comfort style of story – should find this a good read. I did find it different to the usual romance story and aside from being quite confused initially I enjoyed it. This is definitely a “slow burn” sort of romance and while Pete and Max do become intimate right near the end there isn’t a lot of physical romance between the men – this is more about the relationship itself and Max and Pete coming to terms with their new situation in life both as individuals and as a married couple.

This is a bunch of previously published short stories grouped into “A Josh Katzen Collection”. Having never read any of the stories before I was really pleased that the first short story gave a little background on Josh’s character – enough that I got the general idea of him and the adventures he gets up to. I was really pleased – I love a good archaeology/Indiana Jones style of story and found these short stories were great. Short enough to read one in a quick sitting, but with a number of them all bunched together this made for some great reading that I enjoyed.

I definitely think this collection of stories will appeal to readers who enjoy adventure/treasure hunting style of stories. There’s not a lot of time for intricate plots – each story is fairly short – but I can absolutely say to me they acted to whet my appetite for more. I plan to keep an eye out for any full-length novels as I found these to be well thought out with interesting characters, a good pace, some action and thrills and best of all I enjoyed the author’s writing style.

More action/adventure-ish to my mind than mystery based, these all fell into a strict “non-romance” category to me. Half of the stories don’t even have a heroine – just Josh as the hero/archaeologist and a few smaller secondary characters (usually requesting Josh’s help to “retrieve” or study something). There’s enough action and adventure though, that I feel sure any readers who enjoy treasure hunter/action movies should definitely enjoy these fast-paced stories.

With an interesting new hero and a bunch of quick vignette-style short stories this is a great book that’s easy to read for a short while, then put down and do something else only to eagerly pick it up and start the next short story. I enjoyed each of these mini-adventures and will definitely look further into this author. Recommended.

Written in the first person this short story came across to me as part-confessional, part-humorous re-telling of a crazy story from a bff. Light and frothy, my best advice would be to sit back, grab a bottle of wine, disconnect your brain and enjoy the ride. I found this story to be fast paced and somewhat over the top, but a lot of fun nevertheless. While I was a little disappointed that most of the story revolved around Quinn and DeAnne circling around each other the chemistry and sex between them both was smoking hot, and I did greatly enjoy the tiny sub-plot revolving around Quinn and the mis-conception that had grown between him and DeAnne.

I found both Quinn and DeAnne’s characters to be interesting and relatable. There was a small but delightfully crazy group of secondary characters hovering all around the wings of the wedding – and I’d happily read another short story about one of the other bridesmaids and whatever it was they all managed to get up to during this wedding.

his story is a little bit crazy and a lot funny and I thoroughly enjoyed it. With some fun and lighthearted sex, interesting characters and just enough plot to keep the book moving it’s a great way to pass an afternoon. Recommended.

The Tannell’s Family Secret is a suspenseful, fiction story of two families, one rich, the other middle-class, that shows that things aren’t always what they seem.

Faith and Jackie return home to Bayouville, Louisiana after a death in the family. Jackie re-connects with Hazel Tannell, a friend from school. While the Tannell’s have plenty of money – easily the most wealthy family in their town – Jackie learns that even seemingly perfect families are not as blissful as they outwardly appear.

I found this to be an interesting short story. The character perspectives jumped around a little – which I know many readers don’t enjoy – but in this particular instance I understood why the author did it. Moving from Jackie’s perspective, to that of Mr Tannell’s, to Mrs Tannell etc helped show us, the reader, what was really going on behind that perfect facade of the Tannell family. While I’m not sure really that I’d classify this as a mystery story – there’s not the usual mystery of “who done it”, the reader is brought along as the murder “mystery” occurs – but again I can understand this book being labeled as a mystery when that’s the closest slot I feel the book can be put into.

Despite the lack of mystery surrounding the murder, I still found this quite an enjoyable read. I knew from the blurb and title that there would be a mystery/secret surrounding the Tannell family and that they wouldn’t be as perfect as they appear at first. While I admit I found the writing a little choppy – in part I think from the character perspective changes, but also in part because there would be multiple scenes in a chapter which left me with an impression of “jumping around” a little. But again, despite this I really found overall for this to be a good, strong story. I was a little disappointed that the ending was wrapped up in what seemed like a very quick fashion, but I was pleased that all my questions were resolved with sensible answers that made sense and helped give closure to the story.

There is a strong thread of religious belief throughout the story. A number of the characters express a strong faith in God and belief that He touches us in various ways throughout our lives. I don’t feel the various characters’ religious belief overshadows the plot or various happenings to the Tannell family but it’s definitely a consistent theme throughout the story which I feel readers should be aware of.

I found this to be a well-written book with good characters and a number of moving parts that all blended very well together into a strong and coherent story. With a strong Christian theme and a number of different plots following various characters this was an interesting short story that captured and retained my attention throughout. A story that I felt was an interesting and solid read.

Nevermind that no cat I’ve ever adopted from the pound has turned into a sexy sorcerer. Ignore the fact that some handsome stranger (who has sweet-talked himself into your home) has some utterly nutso story about being a cursed sorcerer with a crazy psycho witch ex-girlfriend or some family heirloom grimoire that you’re protecting from evil forces – just laugh, smile and roll with it.

I really did like Grace’s character – apart from the fact she opened her home, life and heart to a near-stranger with a really bizarre story, I found her mostly to be a modern and relatable character. Emric is also a typical handsome hero with a few problems and a strong libido. With the addition of a funny and interesting (albeit slightly nutty) plotline this is sure to be a happy and amusing caper-style of story that I feel should appeal to a lot of people. While the chemistry certainly sizzles between Grace and Emric from the moment he changes back to human form (naked in a tangle of curtains on Grace’s bedroom floor) the chemistry doesn’t become anything very physical until near the very end of the story. While part of me was pleased that the characterization and plot held center stage for most of the story it made this feel more of a spicy romance rather than an erotic one to me.

Readers looking for something heavily erotic or with a bunch of explicit sex might not find this short story satisfying, but those more interested in a good – and funny – plotline and deeper characters should find this spicy romance covers a lot of what they’re after. I really enjoyed it and would happily read more by this author.

I was a little surprised at how judgmental I found Alys’ character. While sure, it was refreshing to have the hero be the one (and not the heroine) given a bad rep for having slept around a whole bunch – I couldn’t help but think that his previous experience was in the past and certainly shouldn’t have cast a stain on his current actions. I was also a little dismayed when I realized that had the roles been reversed – ie had the hero refused to even go on a date with a heroine who had “played the field” in the past I’d have stopped reading there and then and not had the stomach to read on. So it didn’t sit well with me that Alys refused to even get to know the grown-up Simon on a first date simply because he had experience and had played the field.

Putting that whole issue of Alys and her strangely archaic desire to have a boyfriend to “learn by experience with her” aside – there was still a lot that I did enjoy about this story. Simon is not portrayed as some wronged hero, or some perfect man on a pedestal whom all women should fall at his feet. Simon made his own share of mistakes throughout the story and was as human as the rest of us. While I admit I never really warmed to Alys’ character I could come to appreciate where she was coming from. Unrealistic as her original expectations were, when she finally admits to herself how much she loves Simon and how much she wants him she’s willing to bend her own rules and actually try to get to know the poor guy before casting him aside as sullied goods.

Understandably considering Alys’ desire to wait, there’s only one brief sex scene throughout the whole story – but there is considerable chemistry between both Alys and Simon as they go out together and get to know each other. Readers looking for a highly erotic and explicit story probably won’t be satisfied with the brief sex scene here, but I think readers who are happy for there to be a build up and plenty of chemistry should find the heat level satisfying.

A very different style of story, this story was refreshing for a change of pace. While I don’t think it will appeal to all readers, it’s different enough that those looking for something left of center might find this worth a try.

Jared Spencer was one of the biggest things of Isla’s past – her past partner in her career as a jewel thief and also her past lover. I’m a total sucker for a jewel heist story, and add in that both the heroine and hero are thieves (whether past, present or a mixture of both is open to debate) and there’s a sizzling chemistry between them and I’m guaranteed to not be able to walk by this story. I was pretty excited, therefore, when I discovered this wasn’t a simple “come back to me and start stealing once again” sort of plotline. Without giving too much away Jared – surprisingly – has the moral high ground here to my mind. I found this a refreshing change. I’d assumed that Jared would be the wicked “bad” guy and seduce or lure Isla back into her life of crime. And in some ways he did, but it was very clearly all for the right reasons.

It also came as a bit of a surprise to me when Isla didn’t jump at the chance to do something dodgy for all the right reasons. I was a little confused by Isla’s character in the first third of the book or so as it seemed that while she missed her life of crime – and Jared in particular – she also wasn’t that eager to do a wrong thing for some very morally right reasons. It struck me as strange and I couldn’t really understand Isla’s thought process behind it at all. Thankfully she changed her mind fairly promptly, but it made her character feel a lot less easy to relate to and understand – at least to my perspective.

The chemistry between Isla and Jared was smoking though. I thought their desire for each other was still very strong and they were certainly combustible once they got together. I found it a little unrealistic that Jared had waited eight years to chase after Isla after she left him – although the author did explain what had been occurring in the meantime – but I certainly found their sexual chemistry and shenanigans was spicy, explicit and enough to singe the page.

Readers looking for a heist/thief style of story with good characters and strong chemistry and an erotic edge should find this book very satisfying.
