Living in this new, alien world doesn’t stop the settlers from trying to re-create what they’ve left behind. Case in point—weddings are still the highlight of any social calendar. But it’s the after-party that turns disastrous for Lucy Bell. Kidnapped and drugged as she leaves the party, she manages to escape—only to find herself lost in the mysterious, alien underground maze of glowing green tunnels beneath Illusion Town. She’s been surviving on determination and cold pizza, scavenged for her by a special dust bunny, when help finally shows up.

Gabriel Jones is the Ghost Hunter sent to rescue her, but escaping the underground ruins isn’t the end of her troubles—it’s only the beginning. With no rational reason for her abduction, and her sole witness gone on another assignment for the Guild, whispers start circulating that Lucy made it all up. Soon her life unravels until she has nothing left but her pride. The last thing she expects is for Gabriel Jones to come back to town for her.

The Lucy that Gabriel finds is not the same woman he rescued, the one who looked at him as if he were her hero. This Lucy is sharp, angry, and more than a little cynical—instead of awe, she treats him with extreme caution. But a killer is still hunting her, and there aren’t a lot of options when it comes to heroes. Despite her wariness, Gabriel is also the one person who believes Lucy—after all, he was there. He’s determined to help clear her reputation, no matter what it takes. And as the new Guild Boss, his word is law, even in the lawlessness of Illusion Town.

When I found out that Ms. Rosenblat was the narrator for Guild Boss, mixed with the story-telling talent of Ms. Castle, I couldn’t wait for this novel to come out. I just knew it was going to be fun and entertaining. My wait was worth it; every moment was awesome and I simply could not believe the ending came so soon. It’s the first time I’ve listened to an audio book that I’ve lost track of time and the ending took me by surprise. I expected at least 3 days to listen to the whole thing. It took me a day and a half. Just like her print books that I can read from end to end in one day (who needs sleep?), I finished the audio version in record time. I’ll be buying the print version of this novel as well, now that I know it’s a keeper.

I guess you could say that my review is colored by the narrator’s talent, and you’d be right. Granted, it wouldn’t work if the book itself wasn’t done perfectly, from dialogue, description, action and mystery, and with solid writing all the way through. My favorite scene descriptions were with Otis, the dust bunny, and how he utilized his sparkly pink toy. So adorable and sweet, it satisfies a figurative sweet tooth craving.

That first kiss reminded me of something Captain Kirk would do in Star Trek. I guess for some readers it might seem like a negative thing. Not for me. Sometimes there are moments when you meet someone and the spark is blinding and compelling. You give in to temptation. Reality hits later leading to a let-down or a romance culminating in a marriage of 50 years. It’s happened in real life, so I am totally on board with Gabriel’s character and his actions. Besides, it worked, didn’t it?

As for the heroine, Lucy, her fall from respectable to looney-toons and bit jobs might seem extreme to some readers. I mean, how her new boss treated her and paid her was not fair. That he took advantage of her was apparent. Ms. Castle could do anything she wished while writing this novel – it’s her world-building after all, right? My perspective is – keeping it close to what really can happen in real life allows the believability factor to easily translate to fantastical scenes on a far-off planet. Human nature being what it is does not change just because it’s in a different place. The vices, character quirks, unfair business practices and such happen because humans are eminently fallible. Same with the villains. My favorites are the scheming megalomaniacs with delusions of world domination – it worked in the original series, the Avengers with John Steed and Emma Peel, and adventures on Harmony remind me of some of their plots. Fun, pure escapism, adventure, daring-do, and with Ms. Castle’s books, romance and happy-ever-afters are a given. It’s what I look forward to and Ms. Castle delivered.

I am a happy reader/listener because Guild Boss gave me what I needed – a great read. The novel met all my expectations. I enjoyed how the relics of the past continue to cause havoc, I enjoyed the rescues, the chases, the clever quips, and how the story stayed on point with the plot and romance. There were a couple of love scenes and for a change, they weren’t there to take the place of the story. They were well placed and ensured I would have no doubts that Gabriel and Lucy are compatible and well-matched in all the best ways. The mystery was solved and the villain was someone I didn’t suspect.

All in all, Guild Boss is a keeper. No matter if you read it in print, or listen in audio format, it’s a wonderful story. It’s also a great addition to my growing tower of favorites written by Ms. Castle. If you decide to read this novel, I hope you have as much fun as I did.

Electra Rex by April C. Griffith – Spotlight and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes April C. Griffith who is celebrating yesterday’s release of Electra Rex. Enter to win a fabulous gift package and get a First For Romance Gift Card!

Electra Rex, self-appointed ‘galaxy’s greatest starship captain’ and last known human, is going to save humanity or get rich trying!

Electra Rex, the last human in known space, is broke—worse than broke, deeply in debt and out of options. After a desperate, drunken attempt to fix her faltering life, she finds herself in a deeper hole after stealing the most stylish starship she’s ever seen, but it comes with a massive lien.

She’s left with a fast ship, a nearly indestructible debt-enforcement robot named Letterman watching her every move and a lead on a lucrative job with the mysterious organization known as Bi-MARP, which is set to rebuild Earth on the two-thousand-year anniversary of its destruction.

Across two galaxies, she struggles to stay one step ahead of space pirates and creditors, all while trying to catch the eye of a beautiful, vivacious bisexual clone named Treasure, who was recently rescued from a top-secret university lab run by academic squids.

She succeeds in seducing Treasure—or perhaps it’s the other way around—while they run scams to find earthling relics like the original formula for Coca-Cola, a 1968 Volkswagen Beatle, a mostly complete Monopoly board game and a largely accurate, if not small and green, clone of an elephant. All the while, Electra has to hide the fact that Treasure is actually the most valuable item on the Bi-MARP list—a fertile human female.

When the truth of humanity’s demise and the goals of Bi-MARP are uncovered, Electra, the galaxy’s foremost transgender hero, decides that the riches and fame aren’t worth the sacrifices, and she turns on her former employer to rescue Treasure a third time, completing her search for money, what it means to be human without the rest of humanity and, most of all, love.

“I am the last of my kind, and I suck,” Electra mumbled to herself, throwing back another drink. On the first night of a planetary holiday, Electra Rex was drunk, scorned and looking to buy a gun. She couldn’t recall exactly which holiday it was, though, since there were so many. The planet took time off constantly to celebrate a googolplex of different accomplishments, important figures and momentous occasions across hundreds of alien species. It was a wonder anyone did anything but observe holidays. She sat in a window booth, watching ships both large and small land at the valet pad while she waited.

Little of her Embarker pedigree remained after years away from the flotilla. Endless toil and nomadic life marked her people’s existence, even if it didn’t describe her life. She’d lived in an apartment in Authrillia’s largest northern city for more than a year, which should have made her itchy to get back to spacefaring, but she wasn’t. In fact, she wasn’t much of anything. Apathy had settled heavily over her and it had made her careless—at least, more careless than she’d already known herself to be. To pay the bills, she engaged in the least Embarker type of work she could find—being a professional party guest. ‘Come see the last known human woman, drink with her, maybe even…’ But that was over. She’d frittered away too much money on fleeting things, another Embarker no-no. A job meant to replenish her account at the last moment and save her apartment, her precious creature comforts and allow her reckless lifestyle to continue for another month hadn’t paid out. Now she had only the clothes on her back and the cash in her pocket. Enough to buy a gun, she hoped.

She’d given the DJ of the club a copy of Margaritaville, promising a transcendent experience. Jimmy Buffet sang while a dozen different species of aliens attempted to dance on the multi-tiered dance floor to the ancient Earthling music. Electra’s dad had loved Jimmy Buffet. ‘The finest music in the galaxy,’ he’d said. Even with great effort and a good deal of booze in her system, she couldn’t hear what he’d heard. She must not have inherited his ear for classical music. What the hell is a flip-flop anyway?

Normally leering over spacecraft cheered her up, which was why she’d selected a window booth near the landing pad. She wasn’t into the functional caravan freighters that comprised Embarker fleets. She liked the chic, silky, beautiful spaceships that focused on form over function. The bleak, unrepentantly crappy mood that had clung to her throughout the day lightened an iota at the arrival of her dream ship in the valet station directly below her window. An oval saucer body, three hundred feet long, sleek and stylish, with three classic fins off the back, it was—it had to be—a Cadillux 1959 Dorado edition. And it was pink, the brightest, most beautiful pearlescent pink trimmed in the shiniest of chrome. Electra stood on her knees on the booth’s bench and pressed her face drunkenly against the glass. She wanted to lick it. She didn’t care that the thought was absurd. That ship was so gorgeous that it deserved to be licked.

The transparent arrival tube extended to the ventral port while a valet-bot lowered onto the dorsal spine above the cockpit that sat directly in the middle of the oval. Electra wanted to see what wondrous creature possessed such a magnificent spaceship. After several agonizing moments, the owner of the ship passed from beneath the edge within the arrival tube and Electra’s elation turned to fury—Weisella. Fucking Weisella. Her need to buy a gun redoubled, not to begin a life of mercenary work—which was the Embarker way after going bust—but for murder, satisfying revenge on the woman who had thoroughly screwed her. The fact that such a heinous, underhanded creature could own such a glorious ship was a crime on par with regicide in Electra’s inebriated mind.

Weisella was a Panaeus, a vaguely humanoid alien species with advanced telekinetic and telepathic powers. She was only a little taller than Electra’s five-and-a-half feet. Her heart-shaped face had two enormous black, almond-shaped eyes, no nose or mouth. Frilled spines replaced what could be called hair. A cluster of five ephemeral tentacles stood in the place of an arm on each side, and instead of legs, she had what looked like a jumbo, curved shrimp tail. Indeed, the only attractive features Electra saw in Weisella were her money and her strangely perfect breasts—three of them across the center of her chest, prominently displayed since Panaeus didn’t wear clothes. Weisella liked jewelry, though, and she was sporting a shiny new metal ring on her tail that was probably just brimming with expensive tech.

Electra’s memory of the night before was fragmented at best. She’d been hired to attend Weisella’s gala for the Panaeus New Year, partially as the spectacle of having a human in attendance and partially as Weisella’s date. Electra didn’t mind the escort portion of the work. Weisella was rich, enchanting, well-traveled and she’d paid extra for the pleasure. Except she hadn’t actually paid. The transfer had bounced back in the morning when Electra had tried to use the money to get the foreclosure lock off her apartment door. The timer on her lien had expired and everything in her apartment had gotten incinerated while she watched through the little glass window on the door. Everything her parents had ever given her, every keepsake from Transition Island, every souvenir she’d collected in her travels was gone in a flash of white fire and a quickly ventilated puff of smoke, all because Weisella had ripped her off.

Electra had done her part. She’d danced, charmed and been better than presentable in her skin-tight Utopalex pants, knee-high go-go boots and a black corset that made the most of what she had. The Panaeus guests had loved her. Weisella had loved her. By every measurement, Electra had performed perfectly. They’d retired to Weisella’s bedroom at the end of the night to continue the festivities. Things hadn’t gone as smoothly behind closed doors. Electra had been intoxicated from drinks, a few drugs she wasn’t familiar with and the high oxygen environment created in the penthouse, plus she’d never slept with a Panaeus before. The swell of Weisella’s backside, what looked like a delightfully curvaceous butt? Nope, that was a nose and ‘Please stop fondling it.’ Okay, the breasts were breasts, right? Close enough. Fondle those, lick them and fall asleep face-first in them. Was that why Weisella had bounced back the payment? Failure to consummate? It was explicitly stated in Electra’s contract that sex was not a guaranteed part of any escort arrangement. It was her prerogative. Besides, she’d tried. There simply weren’t obvious sex organs on a Panaeus—at least none Electra could find in her sloppy groping.

The valet-bot guided the Cadillux away after Weisella entered the club a couple of floors beneath Electra’s booth. The little bot was flying the beautiful ship toward the stacks. Not the stacks! That was where someone parked a junker that nobody would want to steal. The stacks were for heaps with so many scratches and dents that a few more might go completely unnoticed. The Cadillux could be scraped, dinged, stolen or breathed on wrong in the stacks. Only the worst kind of philistine would park such a beautiful vessel in the holding pen for pig ships!

“That tight little butt could only belong to the Electra Rex,” a gravelly voice sounded behind her.

Electra sat back down and glared at Fizan. Her underworld contact was a Gromphra, essentially an eight-foot-tall cockroach in every despicable sense. Fizan was too large and inflexible to actually sit in the booth, so she stood at the end of the table, inspecting Electra with her dead bug eyes. It wasn’t that Fizan was a particularly vile example of the species—all Gromphra were lecherous and blunt. It was considered a badge of honor to gross out other species—at least, that was what Fizan claimed.

The seemingly transparent shell on the front of Fizan’s torso opened up like a flasher’s raincoat. It was clothing and body armor mixed and wasn’t actually transparent. Within the shell, guns, knives and a dozen other nefarious items were concealed behind the projected image of her chitinous trunk.

“See anything you like?” Fizan asked.

Electra had enough cash on hand to afford a decent gun. A carbine worked best for mercenary work, although a small pistol would be ideal to assassinate Weisella on a crowded dance floor. Shooting anyone or anything wasn’t really her style, and the reality of what she was doing rolled over her in an unpleasant manner, accompanied by a wave of nausea. Electra scrunched her nose while she considered the weapons until she spied something entirely different.

“How much for the ID-clone?”

Review by Rose

He’s running from his past; she’s running from her future. But on a snowy winter night, they find each other and the surprising gift of love.

Sir Nicholas has given up on marriage. These days he’s content to captain his friend’s troops and avoid entanglements—until one winter night when he rescues a half-frozen woman from a snowstorm. Her irrepressible spirit and kindness to others reminds him that all ladies aren’t like his former intended, who wed his brother while Nick was on crusade. But he can’t open his heart to Lady Clare. She’s bound to another, and Nick won’t forfeit his honor. Even if she were free, he has nothing to offer but love, and this lady deserves everything.

Lady Clare’s dying grandfather has arranged her betrothal, but the arrival of the man she’s to wed sends her fleeing into a snowstorm. Injured when her horse stumbles, she’s rescued by a mysterious knight. She recovers at his run-down manor, safe at last—until her betrothed tracks her down just days before Christmas. Trapped at home with the wedding imminent, she longs for the winter knight she’s come to love.

Only a miracle can bring Clare and Nick together. But at Christmas, anything is possible.

This is just a sweet story of a love that can transform a person. It’s part of a series, but can definitely be read as a standalone (though I would like to go back and read the first book in the series. I’m assuming it’s his friend’s story).

The characters are well drawn for such a short work (less than 150 pages and, if I had had the time I could have easily read it in one sitting). My favorite character, besides Nicholas and Clare, is Tom… what a wonderful character. I would love to see him get his own story..maybe a coming of age tale?

And, what can I say about Nicholas and Clare.. I fell in love with them both. I loved how the title aptly describes not only the season, but also Nicholas himself. His heart was certainly frozen due to being hurt previously.

If you are looking for a sweet romantic tale of two people finding each other, give this one a shot. I’ll definitely be on the lookout for more of this author’s works.

If I’d never heard of me would I read my book?
That’s an excellent question. Of course, I can tell you if you love angsty romance filled with cliffhangers (not at the end), humor and definite suspense then I am your author. Much of the feedback I’ve received from my readers is that they feel they are in the room with the character. They can virtually see the way the scene unfolds as they read my books. When I am writing, I can see the scenes unfold in my mind’s eye. I visualize it all and I hope this translates to the page. I write about places I’ve lived or visited. I try to write real characters and the angst of love along with all the complications associated with relationships. I love to write about relationships. They are fascinating to say the least. You can really get into the thoughts and feelings of my characters. On Ice has all the feels with realistic experiences I’ve personally struggled with. I really try to write relatable characters so the reader can connect with them as well.

Killian “Ki” Connery

The woman he loves jilted him at the altar and he is banished to Detroit to play for The Steels. The former star and captain of The Otters is crushed by the betrayal of his love he’s never gotten over. He survives through sheer will power and playing hockey while fighting the underlying demons plaguing him. Jesse Ward comes into his life and they become America’s Sweethearts of the media. I’d come to find out Killian Connery was a man of few words. Whether it was by elevating me to new heights of passion with his wicked tongue or by slamming an opponent into the boards, Ki was a larger-than-life. He was a guy men envied and women lusted after. After all, who could resist a six-foot four wall of muscle with mesmerizing, grey eyes and tousled, raven hair? His presence was so magnetic, it pumped up the fans before he even set foot in the ice rink. No one was immune, not even I when I first set eyes on him at the San Jose Otters training camp during his rookie year. Ever since then, I kept track of him, his career, stats, watched every game, and basically acted like your garden variety stalker on the sly. Luckily, one of my primary functions as assistant to the GM was maintaining the roster.

My heart lurched in my chest just thinking about the day I met the new rookie. I was in the owner’s box watching their practice and there came Killian Connery, sprinting across ice in that blue-and-white jersey that was almost too small for a man his size. He was a thing of beauty, if one could classify such a magnificent specimen as ‘beautiful’. Number 88 too as fate would have it—two times my lucky number. And fate didn’t stop there. I was in the manager’s office when Flynn Austin, captain of the Otters, came bursting through the door with Ki in his footfalls. Flynn was laughing at something Ki had said. The sheer size of the two defense players made the office look about as big as a shoebox.

Kira Hillins – Interview and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Kira Hillins who is celebrating today’s release of Take You Away. Leave a meaningful comment or ask the author a question for a chance to win a digital copy of the book.

Take You Away is a romantic suspense about two people who have played an online video game together for over a year and decide it’s time to set personal demons aside, ignore the meddlers (when possible), and take a chance at a long distance love. It’s dedicated to women who have suffered, or are suffering from abuse.

The story follows Ben and Zoe who have formed a long distance friendship. They’ve played an online game together for over a year, talking on the headset, and enjoying each other’s company. While he lives in Denver, and she lives in a small town outside Wichita, Kansas, they decide to meet to pursue something more in their relationship.

When they finally meet, chaos begins. Zoe’s ex-boyfriend is released from prison. He’d spent two years there for his violence against her. All she wants is to have a normal life, to not be afraid to go outside, and to learn to trust again, but the nightmares she suffers from won’t cease. That’s when Ben comes in.

Ben’s tormented by the loss of his brother who died in a motorcycle accident he could’ve prevented. After his loss, Ben stopped caring about everything and everyone in his life. He stayed drunk all the time. But when he met Zoe, he didn’t feel so alone anymore. His misery faded into a longing for companionship, even if it was just from playing a game together. She saved his life. Falling in love with her was easy. But dealing with her violent, stalker ex-boyfriend was a nightmare he never prepared to face.

Although the couple has to deal with personal demons, there are many lighthearted moments too. Kira told me that she especially loves the heavy metal bar scene in Aurora.

“It’s one of my favorites, and is also one of the several scenes based on a non-fictional moment,” she told me. “I hope you enjoy reading Take You Away.”

She’s working on several different projects, included a Christmas themed contemporary romance. But, lately, she’s been concentrating on the story she holds closest to her heart, Betrayal.

“Wow, I can’t believe it has been twenty years since I started writing about Tristan,” she said. “He’s a vampire who doesn’t believe he’s a vampire, but thinks he’s all alone in the world. He’s waited centuries for a woman who holds a cure for his illness in her blood. All he has to do is drain her essence and BAM, he’s human again. It’s a love the one who will save him, or kill her to save his mortal soul thing. Of course, he falls in love with her. He realizes he’s not the only one out there like him and is willing to spend eternity protecting the woman he loves. He’s the hero I like to call tall, dark, and tortured, and handsome too.

Betrayal isn’t for the avid romance reader. It’s definitely a love story, but has a lot of different elements. Betrayal: The Awakening is the first book of the series. The Unforgiven is the second. They are both available on Kindle. The third installment is on its way, and should be out next year.”

Kira has converted the dining room of the house she’s written into her office. I asked her to tell us about it.

“It has a large window that offers plenty of light and can be distracting when the neighbors jog by. Thankfully, I can close the blinds when needed. But this is my sanctuary with all the office equipment a girl could ask for. It also has part of my book collection that will someday go in the library I’ve planned on adding to the new house. I can’t wait to move in. I’m tired of living out of totes!

“Anyway, nerdy collectibles clutter my office. For example, I have a life-sized cardboard cutout of the Man of Steel in the corner of the room. The sexy man is sporting a futuristic mask around his neck and a Starset backpack, at the moment. I’ve got to admit, Superman looks pretty damned good in his getup.

“I also have a few Funko Pops on the book shelf, two Daredevils and a figure of the Lich King. To make it even better (and more nerdy, if that were even possible), there’s a Star Wars lightsaber replica sitting on the top of the book shelf, along with Superman paintings, Vampire wine bottles, video game and anime figurines, and various other memorabilia I’ve collected over the years.

“There’s also a box of items I’ve collected for the raffle baskets I put together for Lori Foster’s RAGT. The box is sitting on the floor near the lounge chair in the other corner of the room. The chair is also covered in blankets, a pillow, and several jackets in case I get cold. There’s also a case of Captain Morgan’s Black sitting on the floor beside me.

“As I sit here looking at the room, it occurs to me—this really is a messy space.”

Finding good quality time to write is probably the hardest thing for Kira to do right now, since her husband works from home and her daughter is in digital school, so she helps her a lot.

“That’s more important right now than anything else,” she assured me. “I also have two dogs who bark at leaves falling in the yard out back. So yeah, it’s a crazy time in my life. It just gets too hard to focus on the story, and so I make mistakes, or the story doesn’t flow as well as it should.

“Rough drafts are like that though. With all the things I have to deal with in my life, I’m pretty amazed when I actually finish a story to my liking. It doesn’t happen as often as I’d like. I wish I could pull ten stories out of my butt like other authors do, but oh well. Maybe someday.”

With everything going on, it helps that she definitely has a routine when it comes to writing. She gets up before the crack of dawn, usually between 4 and 5 a.m. She lets the dogs out and, while she waits for them to come back in, makes her first cup of coffee in the Keurig (usually the San Francisco Bay coffee she orders online – a dark roast she pairs with French vanilla creamer). Once she lets the dogs back in, she gets online and checks her email.

“I try not to get on Facebook at this point, because it’s way too easy to lose hours of precious writing time looking through the posts,” she admitted. “I have to use strong willpower to stay off of it, or at least minimize the tab. Then, I bring up the chapter I worked on the previous day to read over. By the time I finish reading, the coffee is about gone, and I’m ready to continue writing where I left off. I usually get in about an hour and a half to two hours of uninterrupted work before my dogs are begging to be fed.”

Once the dogs have eaten, she takes them for a walk (but she has to walk them separately, because the hound she rescued last year is still a handful).

“It’s pretty time-consuming sneaking her out the back gate so my other dog doesn’t go crazy when I take her to the sidewalk in front of the house,” she explained. “But it works, and I don’t have to worry about either of them peeing in the house for spite. End Dream recently came out on audio. The narrator’s voice is very different than how the heroine of the story’s voice is supposed to sound, but it works, I guess,” she said. “I’m just honored that Black Lyon Publishing is wonderful enough to make my book into an audio.”

“Do you have a favorite?” I wondered.

“My favorite is definitely the Betrayal series. It was originally set in Port Angeles, Washington, but I had to change it when glittering vampires became a thing. I actually lived in Port Angeles for a time, so that would’ve been a great setting for my story. But Oregon worked out fine too, since that’s where I grew up.”

Her dad was a chief in the Coast Guard, so they moved to the coastal area when she was young. He was also a lighthouse keeper at one point, and she actually lived in a lighthouse. When he retired, they settled in a small town on the coast of Oregon.”

“I love the ocean and beach. I used to be a regular beach bum, combing the sands for shells and playing in the tidepools. All the sights and sounds wash away anxiety and depression. It’s a great place to contemplate the meaning of life, daydream, or just empty the mind and relax for a while,” she told me. “I live in Columbus, Ohio now, but someday plan on moving back to the coast. I miss falling asleep at night to the sound of the ocean roaring in the distance. Listening to it on a sound box, as you can imagine, just doesn’t hold a candle to the real thing.”

When she was growing up, she wanted to be a rock star. She played bass guitar in high school and graduated with a scholarship to a music school in southern California. Unfortunately, the school and the rent were so expensive she had to pass. Instead, she grouped with some local guys and formed a rock band.

“We weren’t very good,” she admitted. “Okay, we sucked pretty badly. We did play a few gigs, but that was about it. It was so much fun though. I also played with a few other bands too, but nothing ever happened with them. I look back now and wish I could’ve found a way to go to that school. I suppose if the Tardis came along…”

Finally, I asked, “What is one thing your readers would be most surprised to learn about you?”

“I have a commercial driver’s license with a passenger endorsement. It all started when I was nineteen. I went to work with my dad, God rest his soul, at a package delivery company. I delivered DHL, Emery, USPS, and pharmaceuticals. I drove vans and box trucks, and also got a short lesson in driving a semi-truck. That lesson gave me a little more respect for the truck drivers on the road. I think everyone should have to drive one at least once. Then maybe people will stop cussing when trucks pull out on the road and force them to slow down.

“Anyway, working with my dad was some of the best times of my life. I also loved that my office was on four tires, and that I could travel out in the elements instead of sit in a stuffy office all day getting yelled at by some idiot accountant with a bad temper (true story I won’t get into).

“Then one day, a friend of mine told me about a job driving entertainment coaches. She told me the company needed good drivers. I thought that sounded right up my alley. So, I got to work and took a class in bus driving.

“Seems I had quite the talent for it. Got my CDL and the endorsements I needed. I got a job as a driver for the city to get work experience. That was the scariest job I’d ever had. But I stuck with it until I found something less stressful. Although, I don’t know what’s worse. Screaming children on a bus, or carting druggies around. But it didn’t matter. I had a goal. My friend kept my hopes up by introducing me to some of the other drivers. I even got to ride on Duran Duran’s tour bus once. That was pretty awesome.

“Of course, it didn’t quite work out. The boss didn’t think I had the personality to become a driver for his company. I suppose I was too nice? So, three years of training went down the drain. Well, maybe not completely. I love learning new things, and that was quite the experience. Since then, I went into the medical field. I love helping people and I love the patients I tend to. Maybe it’s because I’m nice.”

To Outline or Not to Outline – That is the Question

Just like each individual is unique, so is that individual’s writing style. Some people plot and outline every detail of their work while others prefer to wing it. It can sometimes feel like a tug-of-war between the two: am I plotting/outlining enough or too much? Which one of these methods is correct?

The answer is both. Whatever works for you is the correct one.

I have tried my hand at both styles and found a happy medium between the two extremes that works for me. I originally started making it up as I went along; I remember an occasion or two when I started a story and even I didn’t know who the killer was going to be in the story (a murder mystery with heavy emphasis on the mystery!). I also tried to completely outline my story from start to finish, dot-jotting all of the major events or details that were supposed to happen in a particular chapter for each and every chapter. Here’s what I’ve learned from my venture into the world of outlining and the world of flying by the seat of my pants and also the method that works best for me.

TO OUTLINE: Outlining can be very helpful for obvious reasons; with a blank page in front of you, figuring out what is supposed to happen when or what character is supposed to do something at a certain point in the story may seem like a daunting task. That’s where the outline comes in. Okay, chapter 1, I want to introduce this character and have him/her do this. I also want to introduce the conflict with this other character by some event happening. All right, now chapter 2… and so on and so forth. For some, having a definitive path to follow to get from page 1 to the final page is a must. With a clear cut start, middle and ending, the outline can help to reduce writer’s block. You already know what’s going to happen next. Granted, even though the next chapter’s details are already laid out for you, writer’s block still may occur when trying to get from point A to point B; don’t get discouraged! Then again, the writer’s block may be a good thing because it might be an indicator that there is a plot hole that needs to be fixed. Instead of trudging your way through hundreds of pages only to find a bottomless pit of a plot hole that could put the entire story in jeopardy, having an outline can highlight issues that might occur later in the story that will need to be remedied. Wait, this character can’t do that; it’s not in his nature! I have to go back and fix this. Or perhaps something like: why didn’t the antagonist just do this? It would have made this happen instead of that happening. I need an explanation for that reasoning/action.

NOT TO OUTLINE: Part of the fun of writing is the creativity that comes as a result of imagining characters, places and scenarios. A rigid outline could interfere with the natural flow of creativity. Oh, hey, that character would make a great addition to this scene! I’ll pencil him in to this chapter and see what happens instead of shoot, this character can’t be in this scene, even though I know he/she’d have some great dialogue to add and/or would really help him/her in some way. Sometimes a character or a plot may need to change over the course of a story in a way that wasn’t even initially conceived of. My story Into the Fire was an instance of a character being brought into the story that wasn’t anything I had thought of doing when I started writing it. The piece itself was a side project I was doing, just having fun with different POVs and writing suspense, sort of like the movie Vantage Point (2008, with Dennis Quaid and Forest Whitaker); the different points of view all came together to tell a single story and the truth behind what happened. I got about five chapters in when an idea hit me: what if I made the cops called in to deal with the threat be Sam and Dahlia? I like the idea of putting Sam in more stories since he was a fun character to write and explore. Once that idea occurred to me, the pieces began to fall into place. The security guard became Sam’s mentor, Edwin. Sadly, though, Edwin’s fate in that story remained unchanged, even before Edwin Hill the security guard became Edwin Hill, retired cop/mentor/foster father of Samuel Marlowe. Because I wasn’t sticking to a rigid outline, I had the freedom to adjust the story accordingly.

THE HAPPY MEDIUM: I found that what works best for me is a flexible outline. I have an idea, whether it be a prompt or a scenario, that I plan to start writing. From there, I dot jot a couple of ideas that I want to happen in the story. Here are the notes I have for one of the stories in the next installment of Good Cop Bad Cop. This story is called (tentatively) ‘Paying a Debt.’

Gloria is going to the bank
Sam recognizes something is wrong and goes with her
He is off duty, so he has no weapon on him
Robbers show up
Turns into a hostage situation
Sam contacts [character name removed to avoid spoilers] for help

With these few lines, I have an idea of where the story is headed. The next step would be to create the characters, or, at least, get some names. With a flexible outline, I can add or remove characters as I need, so I usually just start off with a bunch of first and last names that I can refer to to create characters. Once I have some characters in place, I start writing. It’s fun to let the story develop on its own, with me, as the writer, merely along for the ride. I learned the value of this when writing a separate story a few years ago and the way the chapter was chugging along, I came to a confrontation between two characters that I didn’t plan on having in the rigid outline I’d created, but I loved the scene because it really fit the characters’ personalities to nearly duke it out until interrupted by a third character both were connected to.

The story is like a child and the writer, a parent. We spend days, months, years, working on a story, developing it and making it the best it can be. That story, though, can take on its own personality and traits or quirks that may not have otherwise developed if the writer hampered its natural procession.

Outline or don’t outline-whatever you feel works best for you but remember to let your muse and the story guide you at times. You never know where a story can go unless you let it take you there!

What do you prefer, outlining or winging it?

When his mother is beaten to death by his alcoholic stepfather, fourteen-year-old Samuel Marlowe is rescued from seeking revenge against him by a chance meeting with Officer Edwin Hill. The veteran policeman takes Sam under his wing and even becomes the boy’s foster father.

Sam becomes a cop and works alongside his beloved mentor until Edwin is killed in a shooting. Hailed as a hero for his actions in the case, Sam feels like anything but. He begins a dark descent away from the stand-up policeman he once was, turning to drugs and alcohol to numb his pain and his PTSD.

The police captain assigns Sam a partner hoping to salvage what is left of him by forcing him to become a good role model for the young recruit. Needless to say, Sam is not pleased with the arrangement, protesting it up until the moment Junior Detective Dahlia Bennett enters his life.

Will he try to shake her loose? Does her by-the-book ideals and strong moral code rub off on him? Will his relaxed attitude and views on true justice start to influence her? What will ultimately lead to the two becoming a solid team? When Dahlia declares she wants to reopen some cases believing that the wrong person was sent to prison, Sam tells her straight out that in doing so, she would be putting her life at risk. As Dahlia persists, Sam is faced with the ultimate decision: let Dahlia reopen the cases and discover his crimes, or kill her to keep her from learning the truth.

Brian stepped forward, opening the massive doors with ease, and walked straight into the sea of microphones, camera flashes, and video recorders. Roderick followed a few steps behind his loyal attorney and stood at his side as he waited for the onslaught of the inevitable media coverage that was a result of the trial’s conclusion.

“People, please,” Brian started to speak, holding his hands up to halt the millions of questions that were being voiced to him all at once.

Once the media crowd quieted down, Brian addressed them:

“I am pleased to announce that my client, Mr. Roderick Morgan, was found not guilty for the deaths of his parents, Walter and Cassidy Morgan. Mr. and Mrs. Morgan adopted Roderick and raised him as if he was their own flesh and blood. There was no way that he would repay their love and kindness by brutally murdering them as they lay sleeping in their beds.”

Roderick nudged Brian, who turned to look at him.

“May I?” he asked.

“Of course,” Brian said.

Roderick stepped in front of Brian to better face the endless crowd of media before him.

“I would like to extend my gratitude to everyone who supported me throughout this dreadful ordeal,” he said, speaking in the sweet and innocent tone that had helped him to win over the jury a short time ago.

Roderick’s gentle eyes and sincere expression then suddenly transformed to that of smugness accompanied by a sneer. “But that proves that you are all stupid as hell,” he said with a wink. “Because I got away with murder. Adios!”

Roderick pulled his designer sunglasses out of his designer suit coat pocket and put them on as his personal driver pulled up in front of the courthouse with his golden Maserati. The media watched in stunned silence as Roderick descended the concrete steps to his car, not a care in the world. Brian followed solemnly behind him, his head lowered in shame at the admission of guilt by his client.

Infuriating, arrogant, demanding. And disturbingly sexy. Those were the first thoughts Frankie had about Greek millionaire and volunteer firefighter Nik Kontarinis, but she was not going to fall prey to his seduction plans. She was on the island of Kathos to lick her wounds and figure out her next steps, not to become another notch on Nik’s bedpost.

A villa restoration project presents the perfect opportunity for Frankie to reboot her business and her life. There is only one problem–she needs a business partner. When Nik offers her an opportunity too good to pass up, Frankie is tempted to accept. Except that Nik has set his terms and there are definitely strings attached.

Will Frankie give in to temptation and play?

The novel is set in the beautiful town of Kathos, Greece. We meet Nik, a wealthy club owner who is becoming disenchanted with his current life.
To help encourage your man to visit a doctor. http://secretworldchronicle.com/tag/belladonna-blue/ generic viagra uk Once you engage in professional article writing creating informative articles will be quite easy and by writing and publishing articles you will be able to reach many other goals as well. levitra sale try these guys But there is viagra usa pharmacy a downside to these particular drugs and that is once you take them, you almost become addicted to them and continue taking them to overcome the problem of erectile dysfunction. The things that make the hero happy are his brothers, running his club, being a volunteer firefighter and helping to take care of Theo, his Captain’s son. He had also had a hard childhood until he was adopted by a couple who could not have children. His brothers were also adopted from two different countries. They may not be blood brothers, but they care for each other as if they were. I liked that.

Then there is Frankie, who is staying down at Kathos visiting her mom’s friend, Allison, and her husband. She is trying to get her life back while going through a messy divorce. She helps with Allison’s business, a stray animal shelter called Kats.

Nik and Frankie meet when the hero brings a stray, wounded dog he rescued from a fire. They are instantly attracted to each other and the hero tries different ways to capitalize on that attraction. The heroine isn’t exactly taking the bait. That is until he discovers the perfect plan, and their tumultuous romance begins.

Their lovemaking is hot and their conversations intelligent but their relationship is not exactly smooth. They both have difficult histories to get past. Complicating things further, there is a subplot about a missing brother compounded by some not so great decisions on Nik’s part. The secondary characters, Allison and Theo, are also important to the story. Ultimately, it’s Allison who steps up to calm the troubled waters.

I loved the plot and the characters. It showed me that trust is one of the most important things in a relationship and talking things out before things get too bad is important. Nik is stubborn and confident in himself, but he carries a ton of guilt with him. On top of that pain is the trauma of being jilted by his childhood sweetheart. I could feel his sorrow when he realized a difficult truth. A very poignant scene that affected me was what Nik and his brothers do to honor their missing brother when they get together for drinks.

Misunderstandings and suspicions are all over the place and cause a lot of issues for the heroine; an especially easy thing to do with a manipulative secondary character who has designs on the hero. Nik has trust issues too and the author clearly shows his insecurity and how it contributes to my wondering if there would be a happy ending.

The Greek’s Bedroom Bargain teaches about forgiveness and to live life in the present and not the past. I enjoyed reading this and recommend it to other readers.

Captain Neil Blakely is more than willing to be the white knight when the situation calls for it. He’s just more accustomed to his damsels in distress being grateful for his help. His latest charge is threatening his crew with the cutlery. In the time it takes to sail to America, can he discover what demons haunt his reluctant passenger? And, does her family really expect him to just hand her over to a fiancé she’s never met?

Madam Guillotine awaits Christiana and she longs for the freedom death will give her. The guillotine has already taken her husband but before she can put her head upon the block she is taken back to the cells. Neil Blakely has been commissioned to save Christiana and return her to her brother in America but he cannot understand the lady’s unwillingness to be rescued.

Due to the way she has been treated by men, the lady does not go willingly and the trip to America is fraught with tension and mistrust. Chased by a man who believes Christiana is his, ordered not to start a war with France, and a sister who has her own thoughts on the way Neil should behave and you have a book full of….well, full of a bit of everything.

I really enjoyed this book. At first it seemed the story would be serious due to the beginning where Christiana’s husband loses his head, but once the two main characters meet, the conflict between them is intense but at times quite humorous. When Neil’s sister is added to the mix the levity increases. The book is not exactly lighthearted but definitely entrancing. It has serious moments, lots of tension in the right places and humor in other places. A good read and well written with strong characters.

Maggie is a feisty lady who rules her ship in a fair but strict manner. Charged with murder, rescued and sent on a suicide mission to retrieve the scientist who knows most about the Wonk Decelerator from a planet he is unable to leave, her mission seems doomed to failure. Failure is not in Maggie’s vocabulary and she has to return to see if the man she loves, Thad Cochran, still lives.

I met Captain Maggie in the first book of this series and thought her a hard hitting woman who didn’t allow her emotions to interfere with her job. This time round I found her slightly weak at the beginning, but growing in strength and determination as the story evolved.

When Benjamin Bale agrees to help the Captain it seems that failure is almost a certainty, but Benjamin has hidden depths as does his alien companion, Snot. Technology plays a big part in this universe, but only a small part in the actual story. Maggie prefers martial arts instead of hand weapons.

I liked the way the story switched from one planet to another, but each scene was as long as necessary to involve me. I have to admit I might have missed something here as I still have no idea what a Wonk is. They inhabit a different space to the Earth universe, but where they come from or what they do is still a mystery to me.

On the whole a good idea developed in an unusual way. It’s stronger than the first book and leaves questions to be answered by any future novels in the series.
