Thorn stood at the bow of his ship ‘My Hedera’ starring out into the dark night, lost in his deep thoughts. The brigantine dipped and swayed into the huge waves that rocked the sea. Dark storm clouds stretched across the skies blending into the black sea. None of the stars lighted the sky tonight; because the heavens had opened for a fierce storm. As he ran his fingers through his long, dark, wet hair he brought them down to his sides, fisting his hands in anger. The storm was nothing compared to the turmoil of emotions that were running through him.

“Captain, do you think it is her?” Sammy his first mate shouted to be heard above the thunder as he twisted his hat in between his hands.

“I don’t know Sammy, I don’t know.” Thorn whispered into the storm.

Marcus Thornhill, Thorn to his friends continued starring out into the dark night. He knew it was her; he just didn’t want to admit to it. While trying to get control of his anger he tried to figure out who would have done such an awful thing to her. Before he returned to her he needed to be calm. He was angrier with himself than with anyone else. If he would have come home sooner, he could have prevented something like this from happening.

As he unravels the plot he is unable to deny his desire for her. Is he too late in saving her and the love he has for her?

This story starts with a storm and I was quickly caught in it. Thorn, the hero, was strong, brave and sexy. Ivy was strong-willed, endearing and beautiful. Together they made the pages steamy. There was nothing about them that was unappealing.

I find it hard to believe that this is Laura A. Barnes’ first novel. Her writing style needs to be recognized. I’m not a writer so perhaps what I was drawn to was a certain, well-used technique so forgive me if it is and my ignorance, however, I’ve never read a book that was written like this. The hero would have an internal dialogue while looking into the heroine eyes and based on her mannerisms, could guess or wonder what she was thinking or feeling. It left me wondering if his assumptions were correct. Immediately the author would continue with the heroine answering his unasked questions. It gave me the feeling that the hero and heroine were so connected mind, body and soul; it was as if they could almost read each other’s minds. Another aspect I enjoyed was the incorporation of a significant poem into the love story that uses their names in a clever pun, and I can’t forget to mention the name of his ship. I applaud this book’s writing style!

The plot was masterly planned and executed with a steady and smooth pace. It was impossible to put the book down because the treason and romance plot kept evolving on each page.

While Thorn and Ivy achieved their happily ever after, I was left wondering if there will be a book two with Charles, Ivy’s brother, and Raina LeClair, a lady who had a part in the unsolved treason plot. There needs to be a book two for Charles to complete his mission! I have a couple of other questions but without spoiling Rescued By the Captain, all I can say is that there needs to be a book two so that readers can be at peace regarding Ivy’s safety. If there isn’t going to be a book two, I’ll be crushed! I need total closure!

Other than a serious craving for more, this was an excellent romance story that was very entertaining. The characters are well developed and I feel like I inherited another “book family”. I’ll be thinking about Ivy and Thorn and wishing them the best in their future!

Her rescue by the U.S. cavalry comes when she’s giving birth, and her joy at being set free is ruined by losing her son. Faced with the loss of all her loved ones, she turns to the only person who understands her plight, U.S. cavalry scout, Jacob Wells.
Jacob has led a difficult life, born of a Comanche mother and a cavalry soldier. He serves as a cavalry scout with bravery and integrity, wanting to follow in his father’s footsteps. But when a commission in the Army is within his grasp, he learns there is something more important than ambition—his growing love for Ruth.
Discouraged and grieving, Ruth turns Jacob away to start a new life in the East. She has an important lesson to learn before she can love again—the lesson of forgiveness. Can Ruth forgive all the pain and sorrow she’s suffered and open her heart to Jacob and his forever-after kind of love?

Can one forgive after suffering so much heartache? Ruth MacDonald lost her family and was later held captive by the Comanche tribe for two years. Later she was deceived by those she thought had her best interest at heart. She knows heartache very well.

This is a short novel but covers a lot. This story is about forgiveness, using caution when wanting to love and trust again but it also touches on a tough topic. Ruth is judged because she was held captive and is pregnant by a warrior of the Comanche tribe. Jacob Wells is a U.S. Cavalry scout that is looked upon as being beneath the other Army member’s because of his mixed race. Both had something in common and grew from that. They couldn’t help how they were formed or being held captive but they didn’t let that make them bitter. Their time spent together and the growth of their relationship help lighten the heaviness of the story. Their relationship brought a refreshing and sweet romance to the story.

Ruth is a strong character that held up under tremendous pressure. With her shattered heart from a horrific past event she opens up to trust only to be deceived. I did think Ruth was a little harsh at the end of the book. Even though she was hurt she didn’t have compassion for Nellie’s situation. All of the characters had it tough. Nellie and Captain Ezekiel O’Connor weren’t exempt. Their heart’s desire to have children only to be disappointed time after time tugged at my heart. Reading their story made me think about what I would do in either of the women’s circumstances.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I enjoyed the storyline and the two main characters Ruth and Jacob. I admire both for their strength and good will. I enjoyed reading their story and wanted their lives to have a happy ending. This is a well developed plot that not only hooked me but it drew me in to want to read book two in the series.

Unable to persuade her of the danger she is truly in, Charles resorts to kidnapping her to his family’s cottage. There they learn the true threat lies within their passion for each other. Can he convince her of the love in his heart or will he be left destroyed by this lady once more?

I can’t recall if I’ve ever mentioned this before but my brain is a lot like the fish, Dory, in the movie Finding Nemo. I have trouble remembering things. Fortunately for me if a book is outstanding then I’ll have a better chance of remembering it. On June 15, 2017 I read a book called Rescued by the Captain by Laura A. Barnes. I do remember absolutely loving it and wondering if there was going to be a second book. I am ecstatic to inform you that there is indeed a sequel called Rescued by the Spy.

Please indulge me by allowing me to quote from my review for “Rescued by the Captain” for a minute because I feel it absolutely applies to what I want to say about “Rescued by the Spy”. “The plot was masterly planned and executed with a steady and smooth pace. It was impossible to put the book down because the treason and romance plot kept evolving on each page”. It’s important for me to quote from my old review one more time. “While Thorn and Ivy achieved their happily ever after, I was left wondering if there will be a book two with Charles, Ivy’s brother, and Raina Le Clair, a lady who had a part in the unsolved treason plot. There needs to be a book two for Charles to complete his mission.” I am thrilled to announce that book two is indeed another masterly planned and executed story about Charles and Raina. One last quote before I jump into why I loved “Rescued by the Spy”. “Other than a serious craving for more, this was an excellent romance story that was very entertaining. The characters are well developed and I feel like I inherited another “book family”.” Book two continues to implement the well-developed characters that were equally entertaining as book one was and once again I was left with a serious craving for more since the treason plot was still left unresolved! However, this time around I know that there is going to be a book three! Yes, I will be reading book three! It’s going to be Zane Maxwell’s story and a mystery leading lady character! Maxwell is deeply involved in the treason plot. I have a feeling that Zane Maxwell’s story is going to be epic!

Okay, going back to why I told you my brain is a lot like the fish, Dory, in the movie Finding Nemo. Well, that’s because I read the first book a year ago and I’m ashamed I forgot some of the important details. I had a little anxiety attack wondering if I should go back and read book one. Let me reassure you that it does not matter if you read book one. The author did a fabulous job starting book two with a prologue dating six months earlier. If you read the prologue and feel lost don’t worry about it because as you continue to read the author will clear up any confusion you might have. She did a fantastic job mixing the previous book into the new book. Although, I do strongly recommend reading the first book just because it is a great story. I really enjoy Laura A. Barnes’ writing style. Both stories are filled with unexpected plot twists that kept me on the edge of my seat guessing what was going to happen next.

Raina, the heroine, is an intelligent strong leading lady who is quick on her feet. It was quite entertaining how she kept eluding Charles, the hero. Charles was persistent which contributed to the amusement between them. Together they made a great team despite all the secrets that existed due to the treason and the mission. I could feel their love and chemistry and must note that their love scenes are spicy. However, it’s par for the course since the entire book is piquant!

I can’t wait to read book three. I hope the villain, Shears, has an orgasmic demise! I look forward to being reunited with Thorn, Ivy, Raina, Charles, Zane and this new mystery lady. I can’t even imagine how they will all save their beloved land of England from that despicable villain, Shears. Anyway, in case it’s not obvious, I do highly recommend reading “Rescued by the Spy”. I hope you find it as enjoyable as I did.

IN THE BACK CORNER of the tavern, he sat there and scrutinized as his fellow man, made fools of themselves in their drunken debauchery. He never quite understood how as an ordinary person you wanted to lower yourself to this behavior. As he waited patiently for news of any kind, he observed as the men drank themselves into imbeciles.

Lifting the mug to his mouth he took a long swallow of the disgusting ale. It tasted like soap water. Drinking it quickly, he swiped his lips on the sleeve of his coat. He wanted to spit the brew onto the floor, but he resisted as the barkeep scrutinized him with suspicion. Banging the mug on the table he nodded at him for a refill.

The barkeep kept an eye on him as he spoke to a man at the bar. They exchanged words as the stranger glanced over his shoulder, looking him over. After they spoke a few more words, the man made his way out the tavern door. The barkeep shouted for the serving girl to bring him his refill.

Charles propped back in his chair, rocking it on its back two legs. When the tavern girl approached him, he landed the stool on all fours. She leaned over placing his ale before him, lowering her bosom in his face. When she rose, he was able to catch an eyeful of her breasts filling out of her tight dress. Her corset pushed her breasts up tight and high while her dress laid low right above her nipples. One quick tug and they would fall out into his hands; if he so desired.

She tipped his hat back, so she could look into his eyes and smile. “Is there anything else I can get for you sir?”

Charles pulled her hand away from his face tightening his grip. When she gasped in pain, he realized he needed to play his part better. To distract her, he drew her in his lap, nuzzling her neck. When she purred and went soft against him, he sensed she had forgotten the pain he inflected on her a few seconds ago. To continue his seduction, he traced his fingers across the neckline of her dress, his finger dipping inside to trace along her nipples.

“What is your name darling?”

“Bessie.”

“There is a lot you can do for me Bessie, maybe later after your shift is done?” He raised his eyebrow in question.

“I get off in a few hours, I have a room above we can use.” She told him as her hand wandered down to his lap.

“Well Bessie that does sound promising. In the meantime, do you think you can help me with some information?”

He continued to caress her as he saw her look back and forth between the barkeep and him. As a stranger in town; he was under suspicion. If questions were asked to too many people, it could draw unwanted attention upon himself. He nodded his head to the barkeep and smiled as if he enjoyed what was being offered in his tavern. That appeared to pacify the man he was a stranger passing through the village wanting a night’s enjoyment before he left.

“Bessie?”

When she noticed she was not being watched any more, she shook her head yes.

“Now Bessie, I do not want to get you in any trouble with your boss. So, when I ask you a question, just play along with me, okay, honey?”

“Love, do you need to return home to your parents?”

“Mmm,” Sophia moaned into the pillow.

“Violet?”

Sophia rolled over to regard Alex through her drowsy eyes. Disappointment flooded her when she saw him next to the bed, already dressed and ready to leave for the day.

“I must be off. I will have Belle arrange a carriage for your return home.”

“No bother, I shall reside here this week.”

“How will you explain this arrangement to your family? I do not wish for a scandal, my dear. While I love bedding you, I will not wed you. Do not think to trap me.”

And once again he was the arrogant duke she despised. He only considered himself and not others. Why Sophia loved him was beyond her. Her anger got the best of her as she unleashed her fury at his conceited ego.

“First, I will not have to explain this arrangement to my family, because an emergency at the family estate called for my parent’s attention. Second, there will be no scandal involving you or our time together. Third, while I love bedding you also, I do not believe I have even hinted at wanting to be married to an overbearing, egotistical ass such as yourself. Fourth, I have no intention of trapping you into anything but the use of your body for the remainder of the week. Furthermore, let me make myself clear, I am too good for the likes of you. A total of twelve Justice had been slaughtered in less than two nights by a single Forbidden. None of them had been prepared for the violent force of unholy power and honed skill that was Devlin Savard.

When it was done, the Forbidden didn’t bother to look around, to make certain none had enough life left in them to make a second attempt. Savard knew he’d finished them.

Stepping over the bodies and twisted limbs, the Forbidden strode to the trees, toward Gideon. In a flashing moment of panic, Gideon looked down at his body, made certain he remained concealed in his invisible Spirit form. He was, but the confirmation only gave him a marginal sense of security. Savard still advanced up the hill in his direction.

The slippery layer of snow on the grass didn’t slow the Forbidden, his injuries didn’t affect him, and Gideon couldn’t help but wonder if there was anyone in this world who could take down Savard.

Savard walked into the forest, never slowing, weaving around the bare trees at the top of the hill until he faced the spot where Gideon stood, still invisible and undetectable, or so he’d thought. How the hell had Savard known where to find him?

“Afraid to face me?” Savard asked, but not at all in a taunting manner, as Gideon had expected. Then, seeming somehow disappointed, Savard turned his back on Gideon, casually surveying the carnage he’d left in the clearing. “I can understand why.”

Gideon didn’t care for confrontation. Never had. It was a ridiculous trait for a man in his position of both Guardian and Justice to possess. Some would say he’d chosen the wrong profession, but few were aware he’d had no choice in the matter. Releasing his Spirit, Gideon appeared not eight feet behind the infamous Forbidden.

“Ah,” Savard said in a satisfied manner at the sound of Gideon’s boots sinking into the snow. Turning slowly to face him, Savard looked him over as if he’d already known what he would find. “The man who commanded the Valenna Justice.”

Not caring for Savard’s usage of the word command in the past tense, Gideon assured him, “My captain will send more men.”

“He always does,” Savard said, his gaze drifting off to some distant point. As his body turned slightly, it was clear the Forbidden’s shirt glistened wetly in the moonlight, sticking to his side.

“You’re bleeding.” Gideon smiled, tight-lipped. Behnam had made a damn good strike.

“Am I?” Savard said easily, as if he hadn’t noticed, and then his gaze caught Gideon’s sword still secured in its scabbard. “Yet I see you’ve no interest in rekindling the fight.”

Gideon shrugged. It was true. He’d tracked him down and set the Justice loose as instructed. Nothing more. He refused to risk his life when Captain Basteen’s betrayal of the very laws Gideon himself struggled to uphold lingered fresh in his mind. “I don’t see the point. This round has been won.”

“So the generals live to fight the next battle. Is that the idea?”

“Something of the sort.”

“Be honest. That was hardly a fair fight. You brought them here to die.” Savard turned his back on Gideon again, boldly walking away. Then, just before he went down the other side of the ridge, Savard called out, his voice echoing in the night, “Want me dead? Bring an army.”

The Crossing is a powerful and haunting love story of surprising discovery set in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen during Prohibition. Its mission seeks to reconcile love and guilt, grief and promise. Set apart from other stories, it combines history, fact, surrealism, and reality into an ever-recycling boost of the human spirit.

Irish-born Johnny Flynn, a former British soldier, is banished from his homeland and sent to America on a ship so riddled with disease that he realizes the voyage was meant to murder him. When he survives the trip, the captain forces him to walk the plank into the Hudson River. Miraculously, Johnny is rescued by a rumrunning Irish gang, the Swamp Angels, and given a job running whisky in Hell’s Kitchen just as Prohibition makes liquor a hugely profitable, dangerous business.

Fighting for his life and livelihood amid the denizens of the Manhattan piers, Johnny is plagued by the memory of his lost lover, Nora, whose father, the famed Irish revolutionary, James Connolly, met his death through a firing squad that included a reluctant gunman named Johnny Flynn. Nora’s last words to him, when she learned of his betrayal and left him, “I love you, Johnny Flynn”, echo in his heart, leaving him pulsing with guilt, yearning, and the hope that she might yet forgive him.

Johnny drinks hard. One night, drunk on the floor of Hailey’s speakeasy, he encounters a seeming apparition on stage, the ghostly Esme, an Irish singer who suffered unspeakable horrors at the hands of the British Black and Tans. Johnny is dazzled by her. She is not only a singer but a healer, teaching poor and afflicted children to sing and gather hope at an old theater called The Woebegone. From Esme Johnny learns how to overcome the desire for revenge, only to discover that she, too, clings to her own dark dream of retribution.

Hell’s Kitchen, Johnny discovers, is thronged with people whose damaged hearts ache for revenge, repentance and love. As he grapples with taking responsibility to help others resolve this overwhelming dilemma, he learns that Nora is coming to New York to advocate for Irish independence. As he confronts her and soon thereafter receives a piercing love letter from Esme, the story comes to a turbulent climax.

Roughly a mile from the Statue of Liberty, Johnny Flynn stood trembling on the bridge of the ship called The Pestilence. His hands were rope-bound at the wrists and a rucksack filled with heavy stones was strapped to his back. His executioner, seaman Bile, named for the Celtic god of Hell by Johnny’s long-gone friend and fellow prisoner, Seamus, had tried in vain to kill Johnny every day on this voyage from Ireland, and now he would have his way. The vessel from which Bile would send Johnny to his death was the recently recovered, ancient famine ship found in the Bay of Kinsale. The ship still contained the skeletons of the three hundred dead who’d tried to escape the Great Famine by taking passage to America but whose journey had been ended by typhus, cholera and tuberculosis. In hopes of hiding their humiliation, the Irish had returned The Pestilence to its parting pier unannounced and mothballed it in what soon became a drying, wooded alcove south of Kinsale, leaving the three hundred bodies to rot in the hold.

The ship was discovered by a group of young Irish campers shortly after the Treaty with the victorious Brits was signed, ending the War of Independence. Soon thereafter, in the fall of 1921, the Rebels filled the arid tributary with fresh water, freeing the ship and setting it on a crossing to America to test its sea-worthiness. The next step in purging their embarrassment for the deaths was to cleanse the ship’s hold of the bones and restore its ability to make money for the Emerald Isle.
