A bemused earl. A governess disguised. A forbidden love and a terrible wrong that must be made right!

At No.18, Baldwin Summers, the Earl of Cartwell, deals with innumerable problems. At thirty-six, he’s changed. He’s no longer simply ‘Win’, that famous hero of Waterloo, but hailed as his profligate brother’s heir. He’s pensioned off his two mistresses and become oh, so bored with gambling. Yes, too, his mother presses him to marry—but he’d rather remove his spleen with a pickle fork than wed just any young peagoose.

Suddenly, he’s had thrust upon him guardianship of his friend’s eight-year-old daughter. Though she tickles him with her wit…and her exotic pets, the child needs a firm hand. With no idea how to mold her into a socially acceptable creature, he hires a governess.

However, that woman presents his most pressing problem—and his delight. She enchants his ward. But she’s beguiling him as well. And it’s a wonder because she is so very…odd. She knows (yes, indeed) bugs, defeats him every time at chess—and dances. In his upstairs hall. Alone. For the joy of it.

She is a temptation and a mystery. With a problem.

Stubborn, she refuses to allow him to help.

He won at Waterloo. But can we win the woman he loves?

Two days ago I finished this book and I’m still reveling in it. I loved everything about it. I can’t stress enough how entertaining this book was to me. His Tempting Governess is book two in the series but it can easily be read as a standalone.

The hero, Cartwell, was perfect in my eyes. I loved his generous nature. He was well respected and loved by many which made him endearing to me. The way he interacted with his staff, family members and with the heroine, Belle, was genuine and heart touching.

Belle was equally relatable. I admired her authenticity and desire to find justice for herself. What was done to her was horrible and unacceptable. I was relieved to see her find happiness with Cartwell. Together they made the perfect romance.

There were a few supporting characters that added to the enjoyment of the story. Two in particular were completely original and unexpected. I wish I could talk about why they were but it would be a spoiler. The plot was fun, creative and flowed smoothly from beginning to end.

I wish the book was longer just because I didn’t want to reach the end. However, when I did my heart was bursting with joy and merriment. I highly recommend His Tempting Governess.

Was her perfect relationship real or was she in over her head?

Ahhh… all the angst of the teen years.

I am the mother of teen daughter. I’ve seen how it doesn’t take much to create problems, or to cause the tears to flow, so it shouldn’t have surprised me that our heroine is in tears in the first few pages of this book. As an adult, I honestly rolled my eyes a bit at what seemed to be an overreaction to the situation, but…I do remember being a teen. I wouldn’t go back to those days on a bet!

Cecily is a sweetheart. I really liked her. And I liked Andrew. I didn’t read the book prior to this one, so I didn’t get to see their relationship develop, but for a star, Andrew seems incredibly honest and down-to-earth. I really felt as if Cecily couldn’t have done better in the romance department.

It doesn’t take long, though for the troubles to begin, largely how I’m sure it does IRL. She said this, they saw that, did you see this video, OMG social media said, plus add in cliques and mean girls … and bit by bit it tears down Cecily’s entire support system, from Andrew to her best friend, Lila.

I appreciated the author keeping things clean on the page. My own kid is frequently a little shocked at what she reads in her YA books. Look, we all know kids are having sex, but it’s not necessarily something that needs to be described on the page. This author has my admiration for keeping it real, but clean.

She’s talented in her character creation, too. The book was populated with a cast of well-rounded, unique individuals and I never confused one with the other. The writing itself was also strong and well done. I have no complaints about her skill.

I have to say, I honestly don’t miss the drama of those difficult teen years which made this book a little hard for me to read, but I’m not the target audience, (and honestly, I think being a teen is far more difficult now than when I was a teen) and I feel as if Andrew was a little too good to be true (though I’m betting this book has caused more than one teenaged girl to swoon and dream of having their own Andrew). Otherwise, a solid entry into the contemporary YA field. If this is a genre you love, I’d certainly suggest this book, though maybe start with book one. While I didn’t feel I was missing any information, and I had no trouble following the plot, I’m sure my experience with these characters would have been richer with that background.

In Near a Thousand Tables, acclaimed food historian Felipe Fernández-Armesto tells the fascinating story of food as cultural as well as culinary history — a window on the history of mankind.

In this “appetizingly provocative” (Los Angeles Times) book, he guides readers through the eight great revolutions in the world history of food: the origins of cooking, which set humankind on a course apart from other species; the ritualization of eating, which brought magic and meaning into people’s relationship with what they ate; the inception of herding and the invention of agriculture, perhaps the two greatest revolutions of all; the rise of inequality, which led to the development of haute cuisine; the long-range trade in food which, practically alone, broke down cultural barriers; the ecological exchanges, which revolutionized the global distribution of plants and livestock; and, finally, the industrialization and globalization of mass-produced food.

From prehistoric snail “herding” to Roman banquets to Big Macs to genetically modified tomatoes, Near a Thousand Tables is a full-course meal of extraordinary narrative, brilliant insight, and fascinating explorations that will satisfy the hungriest of readers.

History is a wide-ranging topic, stretching around the globe and across all time, but what kind of history can anyone, from any time relate to? The history of food, of course.

Near A Thousand Tables: A History of Food is not a thick encyclopedia of all foods in all countries. It offers an overview and is a manageable and useful read. The book has the theme of Revolutions in food. For example, it starts out discussing the “The invention of cooking.” Other revolutions include “The meaning of eating,” “Breeding to eat” (herding animals), “The edible earth” (managing plants), and other fascinating insights such as how food played out socially (“Food and Rank”). There is something in this book to surely please a diverse audience.

The style is geared toward a general, adult audience and is intelligent. There are parts that are admittedly disturbing, such as the section on cannibalism. For those with Western food sensibilities, some of the descriptions are cringe-worthy.

This presentation is also chronologically-based. We go from the early eating of our ancient ancestors all the way through time to high cuisine. People will be able to find things throughout the book that they could relate to, but there are many revelations that will be new to almost anyone.

This is a good book, and those who love history or food should give this one a try.

He asserts that the property still rightfully belongs to him–and he demands that they move out within three days. Or else.

Doors open and shut on their own. Footsteps creak across the old floors. And young Kennedy is convinced that she sees monsters lurking in the shadows . . .

As the incidents worsen, they realize that their very lives depend upon finding out what’s really going on. But once they finally discover the shocking truth about the old house and its mysterious former resident, it may already be too late.

In the Dark is a well written and creative read that is sure to have readers looking over their shoulders.

When a hundred and ten year old Queen Anne Victorian in Candler Park, in one of Atlanta’s prized historic district came on the real estate market after the owner lost the property in foreclosure, Len and Olivia Bowden was there ready to purchase their dream home. An unexpected knock on the door by the previous homeowner, Dr. Laveaux, cuts the happiness of unpacking in their new home short. After being threatened to leave their dream home after three days, the Bowdens start to experience strange and unbelievable things.

The story behind Dr. Laveaux of Haiti decent is unnerving and he will stop at nothing to get back what’s rightfully his. The story is well written and definitely can have a reader on edge due to the paranormal activity. Brandon Massey is an amazing paranormal writer. He has a way of creating a story with lively character and he makes you wonder if the story and the events could be real. The characters are strong-willed and courageous. The story has an unexpected plot twist that doesn’t let the action sag at any point. The author included moments that played mind tricks with the characters and a few times I was even wondering what was real. The three days did seem to go by very slow. Len and Olivia didn’t take Dr. Laveaux’s threat very seriously. Time was ticking the first two days in slow motion but as the deadline approached it seems the story picked up pace and the ending rushed.

As the count for the days go by, Dr. Laveaux’s antics increased. This unputdownable tale combines style and suspense. You may need to sleep with a nightlight after reading this terrifying thriller. I enjoyed that the author didn’t overwhelm the story with love and romance. I did like that the couple was up against perilous danger and their marriage bond was strengthened. The author did a wonderful job of creating a believable couple complete with flaws and past emotions that Dr. Laveaux plays on. I wanted things to work out for Len and Olivia but I also felt sorry for how Dr. Laveaux lost his house. Yes he is the horrible bad guy and he’s seeking revenge on all who had a part in taking his home.

The novel is spectacularly paced and gives a full story. A reader can’t go wrong with adding this diverting story to their paranormal reading list.

As the killer closes in, will John reveal his secret and risk losing everything to save Lucy’s life?

This book certainly started off with shock value that captured my interest. I can honestly say the suspense/mystery had me riveted and turning the pages until the very end. The plot was rather unique and the cast of characters were well established. The romance was well written, sweet and endearing.

The suspenseful plot had me flipping the pages perhaps too fast because I do believe I might have missed something. The title of the book is what the townsfolk called the heroine, Lucy. I don’t know why she was called that. I tried to google “Lovely Digits” to see if it was a well known phrase or cliche but I was unable to find any meaning to the words. Therefore I conclude that I missed something. Although, I re-read page twelve and two hundred and twenty four where she was referred to as “Lovely Digits” and I didn’t see an explanation. I share all this to give a full disclosure that I was slightly distracted during my reading trying to understand why she was called that. It’s my OCD to details that makes this worth mentioning for I truly wonder why she was called “Lovely Digits”.

Having said that, I must state how much I enjoyed the unpredictability provided by the surprised plot twists. The hero, John, could hardly keep up with the turn of events. I know I was out of breath reading each new development.

John and Lucy made a great couple but better partners in solving the mystery. I’m glad things all worked out in the end. I appreciate how the ending provided a solid closure. I’d recommend this book if you are interested in a sweet romance with relatable characters and a suspenseful mystery.

I’m not sure where I received the inclination to pick this book but I’m glad I did. The author’s writing was so welcoming and the way she structured the book I was able to complete the book on a lazy cold day. It seems such a simple thing to write down our thoughts and our goals but to put this simple task into action seems to be my biggest challenge. With the many notes that I wrote down for quick future reference and the wise advice I received from reading this book I felt energized and excited about putting the author’s teaching to good use. While reading I wasn’t only thinking about myself but my daughter who’s currently in nursing school, my son who’s a senior in high school and a friend of mine who’s been procrastinating on starting real estate school. I can’t wait to share the quotes and shared experiences that will surely be encouraging to those that I love and that perhaps need a positive push to keep going or to just start something getting out of their comfort zone.

I felt inspired and uplifted after reading this book. This is a book for anyone who is willing to see change in their life or circumstances. There is no set formality. The author’s simple requests are to date your writings and to keep writing. I like that the author didn’t only write a book on writing things down, she covered all aspects that someone interested in writing their own life script will be able to carry the task out successfully. The book includes stories and the outcome from ordinary people who have performed the basic act of putting their goals on paper. The book included questions that readers may have, and the author included answers and true personal examples that may help the readers see how an individual may be encouraged to clear their mind, identifying what they want and also know what to do when obstacles or fears may deter us.

Writing down your goals in life is the second step towards achieving them, reading this book should be the first step.

But the truth is beyond their wildest imaginings.

It seems Grace has done this before . . .

What happens when the desire for a mother’s love ruins a loving family? What if that mother is incapable of bonding and loving and only around for self gratification?

Monica was raised by Lily Worthy, a 75 year old widowed foster grandmother. A healthy Lily has an accident that caused her death. While mourning Lily’s death Monica’s biological mother shows up at the funeral. I don’t doubt that Monica wanted to bond and spend time with her mother, but Monica’s quick open invitation to stay with her and her family to a stranger was a little too trusting for me. Though Grace’s presence brings about delicious home-cooked meals strange things start to happen in the Stephen’s household.

Grace isn’t one to like but readers may love to hate her. She’s a strong spirit that’s not shy and gives off a memorable presence. She has a way with people that’s persuasive but it’s also scary. Monica obviously didn’t take any of her mother’s dominate characteristics or she’s a sucker for her mother’s love. I was hoping Monica would catch on and see what was going on. Monica was my less favorite character because she was so trusting, insecure and naive. Troy, Monica’s husband, is someone I wanted to not like because of his personal attack on his marriage but in the end my view of him changed for the better.

I enjoyed the storyline because it’s something new I haven’t read before. The author did a good job in giving the story what it needed to be well rounded. A daughter without the love of her mother would be open and accepting to have her absence mother present in her life. I would like for the author to have given more of Grace’s story and how she became who she is. I read the story pretty quickly because the plot is very interesting and I couldn’t wait to see how the story played out. The author’s talent for writing paranormal I’m surprised his name isn’t listed with other popular paranormal authors. His knack for creating such a storyline full of characters and a paranormal situations that is fully developed, easy to follow and leaves reader wanting more.

Any book by this author would be highly recommend for those that enjoy paranormal.

Even though Tyler has some issues with his parents, the pull of his home, the stability and particularly the comfort for his son has Tyler willing to try and make things work. Alan had a desperate crush on Tyler when they were in high school, and seeing his childhood dream walk back into town and his life was both thrilling and terrifying.

I really enjoyed this emotional and well written full length story. Tyler and Abey instantly drew me in and engaged my feelings. It was clear Tyler – and particularly young Abey – were complicated characters with a number of layers and a long, intriguing story behind them. I was mentally settled in for a long read before the first chapter had even finished. I found Alan to be a lot less complicated, but so warm and interesting I really thought it beautifully balanced out a lot of the mystery and more difficult aspects of Tyler and Abey’s situation.

I thought the author kept a good pace throughout the story. While the plot is mostly character-related I thought there were enough smaller threads winding through it to keep things really interesting. I loved watching Tyler and Alan re-learn each other as adults, both with how they’d grown up but also as they’d taken to their own paths and still circled back to the same space again. While there was some small-mindedness in other members of the town I felt this really added to the plot. Overall the pace was smooth enough that I could see Tyler and his family grow, and Tyler and Alan’s relationship begin and flourish, but it wasn’t so fast that I felt it verged on being unrealistic or rushed. Readers who like a story that gives the main couple a chance to settle together, learn and grow with each other and then consummate their relationship should find this story and pace as deeply satisfying as I did.

When the sparks finally fly between Tyler and Alan I found it really lovely. It was well into the story and I thought the timing was very well handled. I found the scenes intimate and erotic but not over the top or so prolific it made the rest of the story feel neglected. I really felt the author did a brilliant job of balancing the small-town feel with realistic characters, a strong cast of secondary support characters and a lovely, slow-blooming relationship between Tyler and Alan.

Well balanced, steamy and very well written, I thoroughly enjoyed this story and will happily read more by this author.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book as well as the main characters. They are both strong characters and therein lies their strength as a couple.

The conflicts these two face are mostly external, and it was interesting to see how they work together to fight against those powers that would keep them apart.

Maura has agreed to a marriage to save her father from financial ruin. Unbeknown to her, her father has contrived an escape for her at the hands of Shane Christian, the notorious pirate Falcon. Unfortunately, things were messed up, and he arrived after the wedding.

Not to be detered, he still keeps his end of the bargain and heads out with her, and Maura and Shane begin a journey that will lead to freedom… or will it?

The book is filled with twists and turns. Just when you think everything is fine, another spanner gets thrown in the works. I was on the edge of my seat until the very end of the story- not knowing how things were going to work out. I am very happy I got a chance to meet these characters.
