I got this book as a paperback. Rarely ever do I read anything that isn’t on an e-reader. I don’t like to read paperbacks. They are hard for me to hold and I can’t change the print size. But this looked like a good book. Well, no matter how hard it was to hold, I couldn’t put the thing down. I read 300 pages in 3 sittings.

This story does at one point switch back and forth between occurring actions. This can be confusing sometimes but it didn’t bother me this time. Each part was quite clear, and it seemed as if they began to weave together. I think the only thing that bothered me was being upset with the author that I couldn’t find out soon enough or read fast enough to know what was going to happen in in each section. I don’t think most authors would be upset by such a complaint though.

There are many important characters in Bell’s book. The main lawyer, John, made me think of Jimmy Stewart in Mr. Smith goes to Washington. You know, that kind of character that seems somewhat naive and yet behind the scenes is a shrewd, smart man. One who can use his naivete as a distinct advantage. This is not to say there are a few times John isn’t a little slow on the uptake, but it is most certainly not in the courtroom. John’s partner Jackson is also an interesting character. One you could easily picture in a tv series as one of those slow-going, smart as can be, private detectives. Do you see what’s happening here? James Bell made characters that I have perfect pictures of in my mind. I can even tell you what Karen, John’s assistant, looked like or Peter the young kid they helped. To write well enough to have created a picture of pretty well every character in your reader’s mind is good writing. I suppose that is why I enjoyed the book so much.

In researching his work, I found only a couple of books published by James D. Bell. I sure hope he’s working on another one.

I can’t imagine what it’s like sharing everything with my best friend but that is what Gabe and Troy do. They have been best friends for years, live and work together, and even have women together, if allowed. Their lives are turned upside down when Troy meets Chell, a shifter from a different planet.

This is the first book in the Paranormal Dating Agency world I have read, and if Chell is mentioned in the previous stories, then I would like to read them. Although this one is classed as a standalone, I would have preferred more background to what had previously happened to her. It plays a HUGE part in this book. She is how she is due to that. Bits are alluded to, but not enough for me.

This is well-written, with Gabe’s preferences clear from the beginning. It starts with Troy and Chell, then Gabe and Troy with Chell, and then finally Valdus makes an appearance. Valdus was the love of Chell’s life before he disappeared and now he’s back again. Just how or why he was taken wasn’t very clear to me though, so once again, I would have preferred more information.

On the whole, I found this book to be very enjoyable. It is certainly steamy in places and the story moves along at a fair pace. Gabe and Troy are the main characters for me, simply because you get to know them more. Chell is an odd-bod but everyone seems okay with that. Valdus was the one I connected to the least, but as I’ve said, it may be because I haven’t read any of the prior books.

Based in a world where shifters exist and can be from other planets, this book was a great read from start to finish and definitely recommended by me.

Lestat is back and he’s ready to set the story straight.

I’m a sucker for an Anne Rice book. I’ve loved Lestat since Interview with the Vampire. That said, I knew I’d get a solid book with my favorite Anne Rice character.

I won’t lie. I’m still getting used to the style Rice writes with, especially in this novel. It seemed like a lot of telling and a lot of this happened, so let me explain. Don’t get me wrong. I couldn’t put it down. I read this in one afternoon. There were times though, when Lestat didn’t seem as important and dangerous as he’d once been and more fearful. He can be impulsive and this didn’t seem to show as much. Maybe it was just me.

There was a lot of fighting and a lot of pieces ending up where they didn’t belong in places they didn’t belong, but it’s a vampire novel. The vampires are romantic, but they aren’t nice. I expected some gore.
If you’re in the mood for an Anne Rice vampire book, then this might not be the one to start with. Go back and start with the beginning of the Vampire Chronicles series first. It’ll explain a lot if you do. But for sheer entertainment, this one worked. Try it.

Morgan D’Arcy is an English lord, a classical pianist, and a vampire. He has everything except what he desires most—Isabeau. As the Angel Gabriel he’s steered her life and career choice, preparing her to become Lady D’Arcy.

Many forces oppose Morgan’s daring plan—not the least of which is Vampyre law.

Though she no longer believes in angels, she sees a ticket to a Nobel Prize in Gabriel’s secrets—secrets that have led her to a startling conclusion. Gabriel isn’t human, and she fully intends to identify the species she named the Angel Genome. Morgan is ready to come back into Isabeau’s life, but this time as a man not an angel. Will he outsmart his enemies, protect his beloved and escape death himself? For the first time in eternity, the clock is ticking.

This is a dark intense entry to the vampire genre with a dark and intense hero. And, honestly, I’m still not sure what I feel about Morgan, but I do know I want to read the next book in the series. And, not knowing what I feel about the hero is not a bad thing. Strong feelings toward a character, to me, is a mark of the author’s skill.

What I don’t like about him… it made me uneasy how long he manipulated Isabeau…grooming her for his own use. To me, that was just creepy.

On the other hand, he is completely devoted to her (although, in the beginning, even that, too, smacked of an unhealthy obsession and an unhealthy relationship).

Both Isabeau and Morgan are strong characters and, once she discovered the entire truth about him and was able to meet him as an equal, was, to me, the best part of the book. I loved them together at that point. The author has done a wonderful job at making the characters (even the secondary characters) come alive.

The plot was riveting– in addition to the main romantic plot, there are secondary plots flowing through that have to do with Morgan’s past (there are some prequels to this novel, which I am eager to read, that I believe will shed a lot of light on Morgan and his thinking). There were twists and turns that I definitely didn’t see coming but that added to the richness of the book.

One warning– this book does not end with a traditional HEA. As a part of a series, it definitely leaves the ending open. And, I cannot wait to read the next book in this series. Well done, Ms. Nightingale!

There were characters I wasn’t fond of and a couple I liked. I sped right through it in a matter of hours and I’m glad I picked up this book.

The trope isn’t a new one. Friends to lovers, but with the doors closed. They’ve always been close and it just took a party to make them see the obvious. The author doesn’t present much of a fresh take on these tropes, but it’s okay. The characters are fun and worth the read. Emily’s growth through the story was good. She has plenty of room to grow at the beginning of the novel and it was good to see the changes. Mark is a generally nice guy. He loves her and wants the best for her. He’s just a good guy.

American Ellenor Jantz lives in rural Germany in 1917, the Great War raging only a few miles from where she works as a beekeeper for a wealthy loyalist. Yet he is determined to make his way farther into Germany to rescue his sister within the next four days. How can he travel all those miles in time, now that his plane is downed, and still avoid capture behind enemy lines?

Ellenor’s life will never be the same.

Ellenor and Alec meet in a most unusual and certainly memorable way! When Alec’s plane crashes, Ellenor makes a life changing decision. Rather than handing Alec over to the authorities, she decides to hide him. While I completely agree with her decision, I was surprised at how quickly she threw her fate in with Alec’s. I had anticipated a bit more deliberation on Ellenor’s part. Yet, she quickly commits to not only helping Alec recuperate from his crash, but also in aiding his plans to go further into Germany. Ellenor doesn’t seem to have strong feelings about the war, and the German family who employs her are like family to her. I admit I was shocked at how quickly Ellenor turned away from it all to aid a man she knows nothing about. Even if this did strike me as a bit unrealistic, it did give the story a sense of urgency that piqued my curiosity and kept me turning pages.

Ellenor and Alec are very likable characters, but I must admit their romance didn’t feel quite right to me. Everything happened so fast. They were in a high-pressure situation, and their lives depended on trusting each other. That kind of intensity surely bonded them and could certainly be the beginning of a relationship. I just wish they’d had a bit more time to explore their budding feelings for each other. Despite my misgivings about the speed at which their relationship became serious, I do think they have the potential to be a great couple.

Mr. Hawvermale takes the suspense up another notch in the last third of the book. Alec and Ellenor are so close to completing Alec’s mission. However, unbeknownst to them, they have been followed by Gustav Voss, a captain in the German air force. I can’t give away details without spoiling the story, but I will say that Alec and Ellenor find themselves practically cornered by Voss. I had absolutely no idea how Alec and Ellenor would escape, and I was on the edge of my seat racing through the pages! I must say I was thoroughly surprised and pleased with how the situation played out.

I’m glad I had the opportunity to read The Beekeeper’s Bullet. Anyone looking for a historical romance filled with suspense would do well to pick up a copy.

Wyoming, 1876. For as long as they have lived on the frontier, the Bemis and Webber families have relied on each other. With no other settlers for miles, it is a matter of survival. But when Ernest Bemis finds his wife, Cora, in a compromising situation with their neighbor, he doesn’t think of survival. In one impulsive moment, a man is dead, Ernest is off to prison, and the women left behind are divided by rage and remorse.

Losing her husband to Cora’s indiscretion is another hardship for stoic Nettie Mae. But as a brutal Wyoming winter bears down, Cora and Nettie Mae have no choice but to come together as one family—to share the duties of working the land and raising their children. There’s Nettie Mae’s son, Clyde—no longer a boy, but not yet a man—who must navigate the road to adulthood without a father to guide him, and Cora’s daughter, Beulah, who is as wild and untamable as her prairie home.

But when a love blossoms between Clyde and Beulah, bonds are once again tested, and these two resilient women must finally decide whether they can learn to trust each other—or else risk losing everything they hold dear.

Back in the days of the empty prairies, two families built close to each other. They knew each other but they weren’t very friendly with each other. Things got even worse when one of the farmer’s was walking his property looking for varmints and found the other neighbor with his wife at the edge of the river. Almost without thinking the man lay dead on the river bank. He tells the neighbor lady what he’s done and why he did it. Then he goes into town and surrenders to the sheriff.

His wife finds herself in a bad place. He’s going to jail for two years and he’s not sure if he wants her there when he comes back. Her neighbor lady hates her. And it wasn’t that special to start with, it was just something different. She misses society, the sounds of the city, and her friends.

The only surviving son of the dead man comes to help with farming, the oldest daughter works with him. His mother thinks she’s flighty and doesn’t get much done but she’ll work all day with him. The land and animals talk to her. If she says so, they think she’s nuts. In time she teaches the boy how to hear it. It settles down the mean spirit his father tried to teach him.

There is more trouble as the two households try to get along for survival sake. The two women tolerate each other but that’s about all.

Many of the household duties, garden duties and animal care were very familiar to me. They were things my grandparents did and many of them were done by my family, too. This was a good visit back in history as well as a good look at how two women missing husbands finally resolve their differences and decide to get along.

Anna McKinnon is a free spirit. As a bartender in New York City, she answers to no one, keeps what she calls “vampire hours” – and likes it that way. She secretly wishes to find real love, the forever kind her brothers have all found. But love has not only eluded her, it’s burned her badly. Keeping things light is how Anna copes.

David Beren is a high-powered, intense investment banker in the heart of Manhattan. His 80-hour work weeks took over his life long ago, but now, at 35, he’s ready for something more. But what? And then he meets Anna. She’s unexpected – full of light, color, and laughter. Anna knocks him off his game and his feet, and he’s never been happier.

Can total opposites – a feisty, bold girl from Ireland and a quiet, straight-laced Jewish guy from New Jersey – find love at the holidays? With the double whammy of a Hanukkah miracle and some Christmas magic, they just might.

This was a totally cute book. I really enjoyed reading it. My favorite part was when Anna, the heroine, met David, the hero. Quite entertaining to say the least. They made an interesting romance story considering how opposite they were. I thought it was heartwarming how the author incorporated a romance between two characters with different religious backgrounds but in no way was this a religious book. Holidays in Manhattan is book 5 in the series but is definitely a standalone read.

I felt the story was well written because I could definitely feel the holiday magic in the air. I’ve never been to New York at Christmas time but it’s on my bucket list. I was able to relate to the characters such as Anna’s roommate and her brother’s family. David’s family was present in the cast of characters as well as a couple of his friends. The plot was current, fresh and down to earth. I loved how humble David was. Together, David and Anna made for a spicy romance that was interesting to read from the beginning to the end. Opposites definitely attract.

This would make a fun stocking stuffer for Christmas. I’d recommend this as a perfect holiday gift for a friend or family member who loves to read contemporary romance books.
