Summertime Livin’ by Brenda Whiteside

BrendaWhiteside_picSummertime and the livin’ is…hectic! When you live on a family farm, there’s no time for easy livin’ in the summer. We grow a variety of crops to feed ourselves, and we grow cucumbers to make awesome pickles and relish which are popular at the farmers’ markets.

I’m the jack-of-all-trades and the main killer of weeds on Tortuga Flats Farm. I really hate weeds. Harvesting sometimes falls on my list of chores, especially certain crops no one else cares that much about such as green beans and peas. But once in a while, I’m requested in the cucumber rows. It’s a little disconcerting with all the buzzing, but my son told me if I just ignore the bees, they’ll ignore me. Still…I do my best not to disturb too many of them. Imagine a steady buzzing drone and you’ll have some idea of how many bees there are to ignore. The cucumbers came slowly at the beginning of summer and now they’re manic. Thank you, bees.

The monsoons are lasting longer than normal this year, which means the weeds are thriving. For a weed-hater it’s pure torture to walk around the fields and crops and see so many. But at some point – like now – I have to put my blinders on. There are too many other chores and I could never keep up with them anyway. I only weed around the vegetables that are particularly bothered by weeds (onions, potatoes and a couple of ground vine plants).

One morning this summer, I was treated to a rare weather phenomenon for here – fog. I think we’ve only had a foggy farm one other time in the three years we’ve been here. Fog fascinates me for some unknown reason. The urge to walk into the cloud to see if there’s something waiting pulls at me. A romantic notion because I know the only thing waiting is mud. We’ve had so much rain. Sorry, I took the romance right out of that. And romance is what I’m all about!

Lacy begins to think the present is more important than her past…until Chance’s connection to her mother and a murder spin her deeper into danger and further from love. Will the truth destroy Lacy and Chance or will it be the answer that frees them?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Brenda spends most of her time writing stories of discovery and love. The rest of her time is spent tending vegetables on the small family farm she shares with her husband, son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter. Together, they’ve embraced an age-old lifestyle that has been mostly lost in the United States – multiple generations living under one roof, who share the workload, follow their individual dreams and reap the benefits of combined talents.

After trying her hand at a couple of genres, she’s settled on romantic suspense. She’s found all good stories involve complicated human relationships. And if you add murder to the mix, the novel makes for good entertainment. She’s also found no matter a person’s age, a new discovery is right around every corner. Whether humorous or serious, straight contemporary or suspense, all her books revolve around those two facts.

Summer is my favorite season. I love seeing the trees with leaves again (even if it kills my allergies). I love having the windows wide open (even if bugs think I’m inviting them in). I love wearing my flip flops every day (heck, I’ll wear them until my toes start to get frostbite).

But one of my favoritest things about this time of year is the food. Strawberries are in stores year-round, but the local ones available only in the summer months are a special kind of heavenly. There’s also corn on the cob, and potato salad, and ice-cold watermelon.

And let’s not forget the Official Sandwich of Summer: the BLT.

I love pretty much anything with bacon on it, but when you add lush juicy RED tomatoes that actually taste like tomatoes, together with heaping amounts of mayo — (Did I just swoon? I did, didn’t I? Please tell me I didn’t drop my sandwich.)

Everything tastes better when you eat it outdoors (except Brussels sprouts — they never taste good). There’s something about fresh air and food cooked over an open flame that awakens the taste buds, and they can’t seem to get enough of grilled steak. Burgers. S’mores, and more s’mores. I can even forget what goes into a hot dog when it’s sizzling to charred perfection on the grill.

Ahh, summer food. What could possibly be better?

Well, how about a summer fling with a hunky chef next door to the place where you’re dogsitting? Yeah, that hellhound puppy is chewing up your favorite pair of shoes, but thanks to him, the next two weeks of your summer is going to be filled with lots of great food and fun. And maybe summer is just the first of many seasons the three of you will spend together. . .  Summer Lovin’ is available as a FREE download at your favorite bookselling site. I’ve talked about food, but what about summer beverages? Tell me what your fave summer drink is, and one lucky commenter will win a $5 gift card (choice of Amazon or BN).

summer_lovin_lg_600x900Everyone should have at least one wild fling on their resumé.

Mia volunteers to dogsit for two weeks, giving her a chance to figure out the next step in her life, and career. She discovers it’s not easy chasing after a puppy with a shoe fetish, but there’s a reward for all her troubles: the hunky guy next door.

Luke is a workaholic forced to take two weeks’ vacation, and at first he’s sure the downtime might kill him. But then he gets to know his temporary neighbor. She’s sexy and fun, and all of a sudden, two weeks isn’t nearly enough time.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: I have worked as an attorney, winery tasting room manager, and retail business owner, but nothing beats the thrill of writing humorously-ever-after romances.

I reside in New England, although I fantasize about spending the rest of my days in a tropical locale, wearing flip flops year-round, or in Regency London, scandalizing the ton.

I can usually be found on Twitter talking about writing and coffee, and on Facebook, talking about coffee and writing.

Love Summertime

Of course, here in Texas it gets hotter than Hades and we consume gallons of sweet tea and ice water. But everything is so lush and rich. My crepe myrtles are bursting with color, the herd of white tail deer that lives where we are has produced some of the cutest new fawns and I can sit on my back porch until well after eight o’clock.

desiree cowboy texas summer (2)Of course, there’s another bonus to summer in Texas, especially when you live in the Hill Country where I do, surrounded by ranches. Cowboys work just as hard in the hot months, but under the broiling sun, if you’re lucky, some of them will rip off their shirts and you get to drool over those hard, sweaty muscles! I mean, is there a better place to ogle tough alpha males than on a ranch?

I also love summer because it reminds me of some of he most romantic moments in my life—walking along the beach with my late husband, letting the waters of the Gulf of Mexico wash over our bare feet. Or sitting on a dune beneath clear moonlight, drinking more of that sweet tea and counting the stars.

Summer is a time for barbecues, and of course Texas is a leader there, too. Smoked brisket, juicy ribs, corn roasted on the grill…mmm, mmm, mmm. All washed down with ice cold beer.

In my neck of the woods it’s also a good time to hang out late in the day at Luckenbach, right down the road from me, where Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson sang in those long ago years. Now on any afternoon you can sip a Lone Star beer and listen to that day’s performers in the Pickers Circle. Kick back and let the music just wash over you.

Summer is a time for love, for happy memories, for renewal of life and love. Is it any wonder that I love it so much?

Summer – The Time to Write
When the year slows down is my time. I love the summer. Okay, I’ll grant you, I’m not a big one for hot weather. 72 and sunny with a few clouds is my perfect time. 100 degrees isn’t my idea of fun, but…the rest of the world is slowing down a bit. I can handle that.

4_Bic_Cristal_pens_and_caps 1 (2)Why? Because I can get the stuff I need to finish done. Like what, you might ask? Well, the stories that are sitting right there, staring at me and begging to be finished. I have this tendency to have a story that’s ready to go, but I don’t have the time to write it. I let it sit and percolate for a while. Usually, when the time comes to start it (or the deadline is that close), I get a burst of energy to finish.

During the summer, I can have those bursts uninterrupted. It’s wonderful. No one pestering me to clean up this or to finish working on that. I can use my time as I see fit. I’ve been able to tackle a longer work that’s been staring at me. I love it. I’ve been able to immerse myself in the characters (have I mentioned they are hot? Yeah, they are.) and get to know exactly what I want to do with them. It’s great.

What about you? What is your favorite part of the summer? Anything you like to do during the warmer months? Let me know. Maybe we can trade notes and I’ll try something new. Grin.

Summer in the Okanagan

I live in the Okanagan Valley, and summer up here is spectacular. The days are long and warm and the rivers are sparkling clear and just daring you not to come on in for a swim. We have numerous beaches – all of them free and three of them within walking distance of my house.

Anne Kane kayaking with Sassi (2)I live a block from the Shuswap River and love to drag the kayak down there in the early morning to go for a paddle. The dog comes with me – she loves to kayak as well. Sometimes, especially if it’s really hot out, she’ll walk to the very front tip of the kayak and jump in for a swim. She jumps from there because she knows I can’t reach her to stop her. She’s a smart little brat! When she’s had enough, she dog paddles over to the side of the cockpit and lets me pull her back into the kayak. Dripping wet. Into my lap. I don’t think I’ve ever managed to go for a paddle without getting at least slightly soggy.

One of my favorite places to paddle is a secluded little lake that is only accessible by kayak or canoe. You go through a marshy swamp, then paddle under a very old railway bridge. The bridge is low, narrow and the water under it is only a foot or so deep at the best of times. In late August, even the kayak is scraping bottom. Motor boats can’t manage it no matter what the water level. On the other side of the bridge is more marsh. You paddle through it for just a few minutes, and then the waterway opens up into a pristine lake that is just brimming with wildlife. I’ve seen deer, moose, otters, beaver and more types of birds than I can count. There’s bald eagles, at least three types of hawks, blue herons standing on their stilt-like legs and ducks. Lots of ducks. And geese. And even a few trumpeter swans, although they tend to prefer the river. I actually bought a waterproof camera (not cheap!) just so I could photograph all the amazing wildlife.

When I’m too lazy, (or it’s too hot to move) I hide in the gazebo my son built for me in my back yard. A nice cold drink, my laptop, the pets at my feet, and I’m a happy author. I can write to my heart’s content. Summer in the Okanagan is truly an amazing time of year!

Family Brimble - aug 2013 (2)This summer will be one of the best ever for me! My family and I have so much fun stuff planned…one of which is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

From July 23rd to August 6th, we will be spending a glorious two weeks on the Greek island of Rhodes. This will be my first visit to Greece and I cannot wait to discover its beauty and culture. My friends have told me to visit Old Town but refuse to say what it is about the town that has their eyes lighting up with excitement. I am looking forward to experiencing it myself.

Whenever I go on holiday, I always pack my notebook because I know that apart from using the destination in a future book, there will undoubtedly be plenty of characters, situations and sights to fuel ideas and maybe even a series of ideas. I live in hope 🙂

Of course, my suitcase will be packed with half a dozen paperbacks as well as my faithful Kindle. If holidays aren’t for catching up on some much-loved reading, what are they for?

As for the once in a lifetime opportunity? On August 17th, I am going to Ireland to have afternoon tea with Nora Roberts. Eekk! Unfortunately, it won’t be just the two of us but a room full of dedicated readers and fans. The afternoon takes place in the stunning Ashford Castle and my wonderful husband has booked us a room there for the night too. I can barely believe this will be happening––Nora Roberts is my biggest inspiration as a writer and my favorite author as a reader. I am beside myself with excitement!

So happy summer, lovely people – I hope you enjoy yours as much as I will mine!

Summer’s No Time to Take Off from Writing

Many folks think summer’s a time to take a break from writing. Frankly, I find it one of the best times to write, and I think my fellow writers who are just as much people watchers as I am would agree. Heat, passion, romance, sweat, the thrill of the chase, the fun of the catch—they’re all in the hot and humid summertime air. People are out and about, day and night, during the summer, which grants us extra time to spy them in a myriad of settings going about a host of activities. The young people on the beach, laughing and joking around the bonfire. The old couple, walking hand-in-hand down the beach. The newlyweds, window shopping in the quaint downtown for their new place. The waitress, racing to her community college class so she can fulfill her dream of becoming a Registered Nurse. The two teachers, off for the summer, driving to Cape Hatteras with their three kids in the back seat. The mundane, the everyday, the normal—the glory and the wonder and the majesty of life’s little moments. And there we are, writers, the chroniclers of the hum and the drum of the beat of that little daily game we call existence. We stand ready to record it all in our memory, then commit it to paper and screen, mold it, twist it, turn it, shape it into something with a message, a theme, a story to tell, a portrait to paint on the canvas of the reader’s mind, all the while bright and beautiful summer providing the palette. Imagine the crime of taking a break from all of that.

AsherJamesGlennGreggIn Asher, James, Glenn and Gregg by Penn E. Loaffer, four SoCal friends (a transplanted Colorado cowboy, two San Diego natives, and a Brit who proves that not all English are “proper”) spend the summer before their senior year at UCSD falling in love and going to parties and learning that revenge is a dish served cold.

About the Author: Penn E. Loaffer has published short stories since 1995 and has earned awards for his prose and, beginning recently, for his screenplays. He has penned (excuse the pun) a screenplay based on “Asher, James, Glenn & Gregg” and hopes to option it soon. He is fast at work on a YA novel he will submit to Torquere’s young adult imprint, Prizm Press.

This scene takes place at the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department annual summer picnic.

An impromptu softball game had started, and Ben could see that both their kids, Gina and Tom, were playing. He could also see that the division chiefs were supervising.

“Wait here,” Elena said, walking over to the softball diamond. Ben watched the sway of her lush hips while trying to calm his mind. An uncomfortable silence fell between the two men as she talked with a couple of the parents.

She came back and reported, “We’re golden for at least two hours. Detective Ramos and her husband said that they’d watch the kids until four.” She looked from face to face, grinning. “So how about it?”

Ben shifted from one foot to the other. The idea of sharing Elena still bothered him, but this was Jake, who’d been his friend for years. They’d partnered when Polly was alive—after she’d been shot, Ben had taken a leave of absence and Jake had been reassigned. Otherwise they’d still be partners, he reckoned. They’d always gotten along. But they’d never shared the same woman. The closest they’d come to something like that was going to the same titty bar.

He eyed Jake, then Elena. They wore identical shit-eating grins.

“Okay, I guess. What do we do first?”

“My house is closest,” Elena said, laughing. She bounced across the lawn to Jake’s car, hips swinging, tits jumping, hair flying. Sexual energy jumped off her like popcorn in a microwave.

The men followed at a slower pace. Jake asked Ben, “Does she happen to be on the Pill?”

“Oh, yeah. Nothing to worry about.”

Jake closed his eyes and looked ecstatic. “Have I died and gone to heaven?”

Ben laughed. “Maybe. Uh, by the way, I know you see a lot of women… Have you been tested lately?”

“Oh, for sure. I test regularly. Nothing to worry about over here.”

After opening the passenger side door for Elena, Jake jumped into the driver’s seat without bothering to open the driver’s door of the convertible. He peeled out of the parking lot with a screech of tires. Ben slouched in the back seat. “Jeez, keep it quieter. Do you want the entire sheriff’s department knowing what we’re doing?”

“Who cares?” Elena asked breezily.

“If anything, they’re envious. What would you rather be doing—playing softball or fucking the sexiest woman in Sacramento?” Jake asked.

Elena grinned at Jake, acknowledging the compliment, then turned to shift her attention to Ben. “I’m gonna bang your brains out, big boy. You’re gonna regret you ever broke up with me, and one other thing…” She leaned closer. “You’re never gonna do it again.”

Ben felt his eyes widen. This sounded dangerously close to commitment.

She leaned back. “Not until I say so. It ain’t over until I say it’s over. Get the picture?”

Jake whistled through his teeth as he parked outside Elena’s cottage. “The lady’s getting feisty.”

She got out of the car and Ben quickly followed, taking the opportunity to slap Elena’s rump. “Yeah, and I know just what to do about that.”

She giggled as she ran up the path, jumped over the stairs to the porch and unlocked the door.
Inside, the cottage was unlit and dim. Ben grabbed her and hustled her into her bedroom while Jake followed. Once there, both men started ripping at her clothes. Jake knelt to unbutton her denim shorts while Ben pulled her tie-dyed T-shirt over her head, revealing a leopard-print bra. He deftly unsnapped the center catch, and her breasts bounced free. Her big, dark areolas crinkled in the cottage’s cooler air, the nipples pointing.

He tumbled her onto the bed and nested his face between her lush mounds, feeling as though he’d been away from home for a long, long time. Too damn long, and at that moment he knew with certainty that he had to do something…anything…everything to keep Elena in his life.

suz EC Gypsy Witch (2)The Sacramento Sheriff’s Department is no place for airy-fairy wimps, and Ben McCullough is the toughest of the tough. He tells himself he’s bedding luscious Elena Lautari only because she’s a babe, not because she’s a card-carrying member of the Northern California Church of Wicca. Ben thinks she’s a feather away from an arrest for fraud, since she makes a living telling fortunes and making charms for the lovelorn. He can’t see her as a lifelong mate even though she’s more than a match for him in the sack, and losing her is unthinkable.

But Elena is the real deal, a modern witch of much power and even more restraint. When her daughter, Gina, steals her mother’s spell book and uses it to shatter the fabric of existence and release an ancient evil, Elena must put reality back in place—even if she loses Ben in the process.

Will Ben and Elena’s fragile love be lost with the revelation of her magic?

Maybe, but there are others ready to heal her battered heart. When Ben’s partner attempts to claim Elena, will Ben move aside or move in?

Sandcastles of Love

Many readers have commented on the settings in my books, often centered on the Oregon Coast or the Puget Sound area in western Washington. But why these beach settings? Why do they evoke strong memories that fuel my writing?

I grew up near Edmonds, north of Seattle. Many decades earlier, Edmonds began its existence as a logging town. Now this “friendliest town in Washington” boasts luxurious condos with sweeping views of the Sound, unique gift shops and boutiques, antique stores, and scrumptious bakeries–just to name a few. In summertime and early fall, colorful hanging flower baskets adorn the main streets, giving the town a festive, European ambience.

I remember as a small girl scouring the beach in Edmonds for shiny small rocks and shells, and the soft plopping sounds as I dropped each shell into my plastic bucket. Even broken shells would do! I remember the relatives who visited every summer without fail from the Midwest. They loved riding the ferry, even if it were only to the opposite shore and back. Often in the early evening, the women packed up a casserole, a simple salad, and beverages to tote to the beach where we’d spread out our feast onto wind-worn picnic tables. My dad would join us once he returned from work. There we’d eat, laugh, talk and gaze at the gentle waves lapping the shore. We could also see the lines of vehicles waiting to board the green and white ferries.

I also recall my early teen years when my girlfriends and I’d walk to the beach during summertime. We’d spread out blankets, slather on cocoa butter, bake under the sun, and look for cute guys. With a briny breeze against our faces, the warmth radiating up from the sand, and the occasional wail of a train that rode the rails paralleling the beach, we were happy Beach Bums for the day. Later during high school, our crowd I often drove to the beach on warm summer evenings. We built beach fires that scented the air with the salty smell of driftwood. We strolled barefoot, feeling the gritty sand between our toes. Later we huddled around the fire to toast marshmallows and solve the world’s problems–or so we thought.

So what about you? What type of environment awakens your senses and makes you feel alive and inspired? It might be a trail through a majestic Old Growth forest in the mountains, the high desert with its endless miles of tan sculpted hills, a ranching community nestled into a lush green valley, or a beach where, like me, you can commune with the seagulls.

Voeller-Sandcastles400x600 (2)When Logan Becker’s family embarks on a summer “house swapping” vacation in a beach town in Oregon, Logan is overjoyed. Similarly, Tricia Merrit, the daughter of the other family, is thrilled to be in the farm belt of Minnesota.

Logan falls in love with the beach boy surfer of her dreams, but soon she discovers he’s Tricia’s boyfriend. Logan’s dreams are shattered. Meanwhile, there’s another boy who is attracted to Logan—the totally uncool Grant Duncan who is busy trying to launch a campaign to clean the local beaches. Can Logan come to realize that true love often reveals itself in unexpected ways?
