Summer’s No Time to Take Off from Writing

Many folks think summer’s a time to take a break from writing. Frankly, I find it one of the best times to write, and I think my fellow writers who are just as much people watchers as I am would agree. Heat, passion, romance, sweat, the thrill of the chase, the fun of the catch—they’re all in the hot and humid summertime air. People are out and about, day and night, during the summer, which grants us extra time to spy them in a myriad of settings going about a host of activities. The young people on the beach, laughing and joking around the bonfire. The old couple, walking hand-in-hand down the beach. The newlyweds, window shopping in the quaint downtown for their new place. The waitress, racing to her community college class so she can fulfill her dream of becoming a Registered Nurse. The two teachers, off for the summer, driving to Cape Hatteras with their three kids in the back seat. The mundane, the everyday, the normal—the glory and the wonder and the majesty of life’s little moments. And there we are, writers, the chroniclers of the hum and the drum of the beat of that little daily game we call existence. We stand ready to record it all in our memory, then commit it to paper and screen, mold it, twist it, turn it, shape it into something with a message, a theme, a story to tell, a portrait to paint on the canvas of the reader’s mind, all the while bright and beautiful summer providing the palette. Imagine the crime of taking a break from all of that.

AsherJamesGlennGreggIn Asher, James, Glenn and Gregg by Penn E. Loaffer, four SoCal friends (a transplanted Colorado cowboy, two San Diego natives, and a Brit who proves that not all English are “proper”) spend the summer before their senior year at UCSD falling in love and going to parties and learning that revenge is a dish served cold.

About the Author: Penn E. Loaffer has published short stories since 1995 and has earned awards for his prose and, beginning recently, for his screenplays. He has penned (excuse the pun) a screenplay based on “Asher, James, Glenn & Gregg” and hopes to option it soon. He is fast at work on a YA novel he will submit to Torquere’s young adult imprint, Prizm Press.
