Craven and his friend Anthony discover they’re in over their heads the night they’re caught spying on Beresford Hall. But when Craven meets the dark, mysterious Dominic Beresford, he wonders if fate really does step in and take you by surprise when you least expect.

This bright jewel of a short story demonstrates in dramatic terms what happens when you believe you should not have something: you think about it all the time. Taking place during the most sexually repressive era in America, when young men and women were only supposed to think about sex in the context of marriage and then only in terms of procreation, not pleasure, the tale revolves around some of the inevitable ‘underground’ activities inevitable during such repression.

Craven, both desperately ashamed of and driven by his desires, is a thoroughly engaging character, poignant and sympathetic, while Dominic is absolutely delicious as the decadent, powerful lord of the manor. Their meeting and subsequent budding relationship proceeds in a smoothly written, flowing style, intense and heated on both sides.

My only issue with this work is that it is the beginning of what should be a longer work marketed as a short story. There will, no doubt, be more (and there should be) but this piece ends just as the romance begins to get underway. Too many questions remain unresolved and the reader is cut off before we see how their relationship will actually work in practice. A short story should be self-contained and resolve whatever central conflict has been presented.

Otherwise, though, Craven’s story is beautifully written and well-crafted. His whirlwind journey from anxious peeping tom to willing sub is well worth the read and I will be looking for more from Ms. Diablo in the future (especially if Craven and Dominic are involved.)

  1. Nice review! Keta is one of my favorite authors.

  2. Hi Phlox,

Thank you so very much for the kind words and for writing such a concise review. As always Whipped Cream never ceases to amaze me. Their reviewers are some of the very best industry and not because the rated Carnal Cravings high, but because one can tell they LOVE reading, they pay attention to detail and are generally spot on (good or bad). Kudos to you and my hearty thanks!

This is always a problem with short works — readers want more. Most of the time when I write a short, it is with the intention to turn it into a full-lenght novel or at the very least, a novella. I like to test the waters, see if the characters are likeable enough, the readers fascinated.

Thanks to you, I will be working on a full-length for Carnal Cravings.

    You rock, Phlox,
    My humble appreciation, Keta
