Really, can there possibly be a fan of erotic romance who doesn’t love Beauty and the Beast? The Beast is the archetypal erotic hero—dark, dangerous, and enslaved by his animal nature. The only surprise there can be when you see an erotic re-telling of this story is that it doesn’t happen more often. Jane E. Jones seems to have written Beauty’s Beast with fans of the fairy tale firmly in mind.

The heroine, Holly, is utterly ordinary, and reacts to her adventures as any red-blooded woman would, rather than being somehow repelled by the raw sex appeal that the Beast is capable of. She doesn’t shy away from her love for both Alexavier and Ristan, and makes her choices based on that love. Ristan is an unfortunately underdeveloped character. One wonders if this was a deliberate choice—in order to make an earthier, less precious version of the story—or if the author could not keep things “in character.” This is something to be aware of about this book: there’s really nothing exceptional about Jones’s writing, but the depth of creativity and emotion in her telling of the tale make it worth the read. If you’re not convinced, then here’s one more thing: in this version of the old, old story, our Beauty at last, at long last, gets to have her showdown with the stupid pretty prince who is worthless if he means the loss of the beast. Personally, I had been waiting for that for a long time. If you have too, or if you’ve simply always thought that the prince was just, you know, boring in comparison to the Beast, read this one. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

I let my imagination wander when I chose this story. I was curious to know what lay behind the title The Lady of Sexuality. Perhaps it was the of a sulphurous dominatrix or of a sexologist. To discover it was the first volume of a series on the Daughters of the Dagda. Aeval is the Irish goddess of sexuality who has become a mortal woman and must find love in order to survive.

The adventures of Aeval take an interesting turn when the goddess lives as an attractive sexotherapist and discovers for herself the emotions women live through as they fall in love : loss of control, despair, doubt, perserverance.

I enjoyed the challenges faced by this woman. The first Enthralled had a fairly predictable plot: vampire meets boy, vampire and boy have hot, sweaty man-sex, and vampire and boy fall in love. There’s nothing wrong with that story, but we’ve all read it before. And yet, there’s devilment in the details. When Laura Baumbach writes this plot it involves a vampire crashing into a suicidal hemophiliac who tries to trick him into granting him death, the vampire is actually pretty damned evil, and secretly half-believes that death-wish boy might be his route to salvation. Really, when’s the last time you’ve read that story? The standard tropes of paranormal erotic romance merely seem to provide a framework for a haunting dance between two badly damaged souls. I still find myself thinking about it, for all its simplicity.

So, I was looking forward to reading the sequel. Breathing focuses on Rowland and Colin’s relationship, and what both of them will have to face to be together. As readers, we never get to see any stagnation or agitation in their daily routine, but through Colin we experience the distress and worry that comes from wondering if a commitment is a mistake. The story takes place over one danger-filled night, which brings all of Colin’s doubts and fears to a crisis point. And while Baumbach’s descriptions of emotion ring true, her descriptions of sex and its choreography show a lack of research or even accurate visualization. Unrealistic anal sex is a pet peeve of mine, and Baumbach is a shameless offender.

In the end, while Breathing is not as good as Enthralled was, it still focuses on some truly beautiful and intriguing themes. Breathing outlines the struggle to trust one’s lover, the owner of one’s soul, and to accept his imperfections. In this respect, the story still holds its poignancy and flavor, and should be read by anyone who fell in love with Colin and Rowland or is a sucker for an unconventional love-affair.

These two characters could have hated each other or mistrusted each other so easily. But the will to live, to survive, to beat the odds that want to destroy them is a strong fire that burns within each of them. It allows Disa and Paullus to embrace their unvarnished and base desires – one of which is quite different.

It becomes very difficult to be critical and objective when you’re getting swept away by a story, and Rookery Cove: Ocean’s Call has every intention of sweeping you away. Dawn Montgomery spins a lively tall tale that is infused with past troubles, lusty tumbles, and the call of the sea. The trouble with triad love stories is that often one character gets neglected, and when there are two beautiful men involved, it’s usually the woman. Lucky for Nikita, that isn’t the case here. She’s in a rough spot when you meet her, but Nikita’s problems are introduced and dealt with without wallowing in her atrocious situation. Montgomery expertly avoids the traps a less skilled author would have fallen into, giving us just enough angst to build tension without drowning us in it. Her action scenes are intense and well wrought, but she seems to have difficulty with her descriptions of anatomy and sex, a cardinal sin in an erotic story. Using “the selkie” more than once or twice in a sex scene is tedious and mood-killing. Repetition is a constant problem, and one that could have been fixed with a little more care and craft. Perhaps this is just the result of awkwardness or poor editing, but it is a distraction nonetheless.

Despite all that, however, you can forgive a lot from a story that winds up as tight as this one does, pulling you in as it tightens. The ending came faster than I’d like, and I can’t help but think that this would have been an entrancing novel. As a novella, it’s a bit of a tease. Really though, when my biggest complaint is that I wish I could have spent more time with this story and its characters, Dawn Montgomery must be doing something right.

If you pick up Black Dragon’s Blood expecting a standard dragon fantasy, you’ll be disappointed. Ms. Philmar has constructed a rich futuristic world for her dragon hybrids to live in. It’s a world of science, flying cars, elixirs, and all sorts of interesting details that enhance the story and the readers’ experience.

These same answers are important to William as they impact the Dragon Center and the people who depend on it. The mystery was so interesting that I wished at times that there was a better balance between it and the very well-written erotic elements in the novel. The plot thread was tied up very satisfactorily at the end, though.

All-in-all, Black Dragon’s Blood is a unique erotic paranormal that mixes speculative fiction elements very well. Recommended for readers who enjoy Susan Kearney’s futuristics and yearn for vintage historical alpha males.

Rae is a strong character that has been through some severe misfortune, and I admired how she works hard to get her life back. In today’s superficial world, I could certainly understand the self-consciousness she feels about her physical scars. Her embarrassment comes through when her physical limitations become apparent and I really felt for her, but she moves on and doesn’t linger in the awkwardness, showing her strength. She is, however, a little too kind-hearted, in my opinion. She shows compassion for people that had made terrifying threats on her life, which I can’t understand. I also respected his dedication to preserving his heritage, at all costs, making him that much more tempting.

I had a couple of issues with the story. Mica witnesses something before they begin their journey into the mountains, but he says or does nothing about it, which, in the context of the setting and potential danger, made no sense to me. I understand that what he sees is disclosed to increase the suspense, but the reveal could have been communicated from the perpetrator’s point of view, accomplishing the same thing, but without the contrived feel. I also thought that there were a few references, particularly by Rae, to anatomy and the sex act that came off as vulgar. It wasn’t that I was offended, it just didn’t seem appropriate to the situation. When they are having sex or about too? Sure. But when she’s in mortal danger? I don’t think so. I’d be worrying how to get my fanny out of trouble, not thinking about jumping a guy; I don’t care how hot he is! But even with these two minor points, I did find the plot attention-grabbing and I held on for the rollercoaster-like twists and turns.

“Fool’s Gold” is an interesting saga of Native American folklore, treasure maps and deception. Mixed in with dream visions and missed opportunities made right, I found Mica and Rae’s adventure to be an intriguing ride.

I think that Rookery Cove Island sounds like a fun and exciting place to work. It’s clear that Kat is feeling lonely and does not fully understand what she needs. I was a cleaning woman in the past, but I never had a steamy at-work adventure like Kat’s. Lucky girl! Will and Monty sound like real studs, in the lab and out!

The idea of discovering a feline aphrodisiac is sexy. I was transported into Kat’s body when she mixed up the vials and became all hot and bothered. Talk about needing a hot shower! I could also feel the desire and passion when Will and Monty catch up with her. I just couldn’t wait for the three of them to get together. Kat just lets go and is true to herself and her needs.

This book was very hot. It had lots of passionate imagery and was an enjoyable read.
