Joanne Brick’s thirty years as an elementary school music teacher evaporated into the rising sea of layoffs. A lifetime of dedication gone. At forty-nine, single with an ailing mom and bitter divorced sister, the future looked bleak. Family relationships soured as conversations moved to “the lettuce zone”-cold and crisp. Then one day, while cleaning out the garage for a yard sale, inspiration struck as she dusted off an old long-forgotten bicycle. And when she took her first ride she knew it was time to sink or pedal. “Onward! That was the answer that had eluded her earlier. There was dignity in that word. There was hope.” Never a sports fanatic and sorely out of shape, Joanne was barely able to ride straight, but she took up bicycle racing because it added purpose to her life. “Joanne increased her own speed. The wind whipped her face. The whirring of the spinning spokes and chains rose in pitch as she spun faster. She was flying again, beyond failed careers, spurned lovers, regrets, and mistakes. She spun even quicker. Her breath came in swift, hard grunts.” She pedaled past unemployment, failed relationships, family drama, and career loss. Her life began to fill with new friends, an inspirational Desert Storm vet turned cycling coach, and a sleek new physique from all the training. Then she ran into a brick wall in the form of Sheila Dominary, a women’s bike racing adversary. Will Joanne regain her confidence as she pedals toward redemption, romance, adventure, and life beyond unemployment? Pedal is an inspirational journey. It is a contemporary story that deals not only with family relationships, but also with life’s turning points and how ordinary people handle them.

When you lose everything you’ve ever worked for, what is there to push you forward again?

Joanne Brick loses her career as a music teacher after thirty years due to the district budget cuts. What is even worse is “music teacher” was her identity. Joanne finds herself out of a job, without money and at a loss as to who she is any longer. Joanne finds herself in a struggle that she never expected-to identify her inner passion and recollect her life.

Louis K. Lowy does an amazing job of showing how devastating life can be as well as intertwining how amazing life can be. Joanne is focused on the big picture, but like many of us, can miss out on what is happening in the right now. When life shakes her up, Joanne keeps pushing forward towards the goal. When the unthinkable happens and then the unimaginable happens shortly after that, Joanne proves that she is a fighter and refuses to give up.

Louis K. Lowy draws the reader in with a simple plot, to see Joanne put her life back together. Yet, what truly happens is that the reader becomes one in Joanne’s life, feeling her exuberance in training and then the crushing defeats that life hands her. The reader cheers for Joanne’s success and cries when she is down. All of this Louis K. Lowy draws in vivid detail, causing the reader to fully understand and see the life of Joanne Brick being shaped.

The ending of the book is one that many would not have imagined. Yet, when we look back at our own personal lives, we are often astonished to see where we are from where we began. This story is simply that, astonishing. I urge you to pick up a copy of Pedal and see if you have what it takes to make it to across the finish line!

Unmasking the murderer proves much more challenging than finding dangling participles, so Em recruits fellow English professor Lenny Jenkins for assistance. Together, they comb the campus and vicinity for clues, risking their reputations and possibly their jobs. After an intruder breaks into Em’s house, Lenny advises caution—and perhaps a change of address. Em, on the other hand, is all the more determined to forge ahead, convinced they’re on the brink of an important breakthrough.

The new semester brings more than just new classrooms full of students for Professor Emmeline Prather.

Professor Prather is an English professor at a small university who is still adjusting to the dynamics of the world of higher education. Although Professor Prather finds herself in some unique social conundrums, she often looks to her friend and colleague, Lenny Jenkins, to bail her out. When the unthinkable happens and one of her students is found dead, Professor Prather and Lenny both consider there may be foul play.

Mary Angela does a great job bringing Emmeline Prather to life. When readers often think of English professors, they often reflect back to their childhood or college years. Professor Prather is definitely one English professor that I may have had in the past. Interwoven into the main character’s personality is subtle traits and quirks that I have seen in many English professors that I have had in the past. Yet, as a reader, we get to see a unique glimpse into the world of Emmeline Prather and see how the English professor’s world works from the inside out.

The plot is believable and the supporting characters are fun and have quirky traits all their own. The mystery itself, which provides the core of the plot, constantly keeps the reader guessing. The fun relationship the Professor Prather and Lenny have keeps the reader coming back. The social dynamics between faculty and student are very much at work in the book just as they are at every university.

This was a fantastic read and a lot of fun! Since this is the first book of the Cozy Mystery Series, I look forward to reading many more and cannot wait to see what Professor Emmeline Prather gets herself into next time!

Best friends since childhood, Damien and Paxton are going on a college graduation trip of a lifetime to the jungles of Peru. Their adventures along the way will culminate in a night of consuming the mind-altering drug ayahuasca – the most potent DMT based hallucinogen known to man. Will the experience expand their consciousness and change them into the men society beckons? Or will the young men’s shadowy backgrounds turn the trip so dark that it will consume them and everyone around them?

Ready for an adventure of a lifetime? How about a journey that will change your whole perception of the world?

Ayahuasca is a horror story based on the human mind. While the story starts off with a bang, the reader begins to see the inner workings of the minds of Damien and Paxton. Quite quickly the reader realizes that something is not right. These two young men come from a world of affluence and influence where money is limitless. This all leads to a college graduation party of epic proportions.

Yet, the reader does not quite realize what is in store or what the two men have planned. Flashbacks along the way start to show how the two men, who became young friends many years ago, began to see the world in a much more dark and twisted manner than most. Stretching the limits of their own humanity, the two young boys begin a torturous journey towards adulthood. With little social regard for what makes us human, the boys manage to duck out of trouble but continue their dark ways. Even when the boys create the Firebox, the risk of getting caught was downplayed by the horrors that the boys learned that they could control.

Jonathan Huls writes a fascinating tale of lust, imperfection, psychosis and a wicked and wild drug called Ayahuasca. From the first encounter with the drug, visions and hallucinations of a talking jackalope haunt Paxton and warn him of a dangerous future. Flashbacks to the past show the reader just how deeply this psychosis and issues in both the lives of Damien and Paxton are woven.

Although Ayahuasca utilizes strong language, extremely graphic descriptions of violence and very graphic depictions of death, this is a fantastic of what happens in the minds of those who may have a predisposition to be mentally imbalanced and when that imbalance is fed directly with horrors and inhumanity-the result can be horrifying.

If you enjoy psychological thrillers and dark horror stories, I highly recommend Ayahuasca. This story will have you thinking twice about your own mental limits!

30 Seconds Before is a prequel to 30 Seconds and sets the initial stage and lays the foundation for a much more intense storyline. Although this is a shorter story, it creates a strong backstory that the reader will find invaluable in 30 Seconds.

The character development and graphic detail are what sets Chrys Fey apart from other authors. Chrys Fey writes with such strong detail that the reader feels as though they are a part of the scene. The plot is strong, but at times felt a little rushed. The shortened timespan and abrupt ending left me wanting more. I felt that there could have been more description and more emotion in some areas to bring the story to its full potential.

A reader who had not read 30 Seconds would be able to find this story enjoyable, but to have the full effect of the story that Chrys Fey is telling it would be best to be sure to follow up with 30 Seconds after reading 30 Seconds Before.

Overall this was a fun story to read and a great prequel to 30 Seconds. Chrys Fey has a fun and dynamic writing style and will certainly take the reader on an adventure!

A bog may be Earth’s undoing, but it will be a gift to Mars.

Digging up bog bodies and analyzing corpses are the last things archaeology graduate student Felicity Cratchett wants to do. And when unusual mummies are discovered in the subpolar region of Polar Bear Provincial Park, it’s the last place she wants to go. But since her faculty advisor insists that she log more hours in fieldwork, she has little choice. In a remote bog with a small team of scientists, Felicity unearths the greatest secret of our time—a secret with ties to ancient Rome, roots in Botswana, and a link to the first people to exercise abstract thought. This revelation will challenge the conventional theory of human origins and human evolution.

Meanwhile, astronaut Lucas Wilson, a man tormented with a deep-seated anger, is terraforming Mars. He reluctantly descends to the Red Planet’s surface with his fellow astronauts, preparing to direct their exploration. Mars, in its birth pangs, will challenge every step he takes, with gas explosions and raging rivers, with damaged fuel processors and limited oxygen supplies. In the midst of these disasters, Lucas must keep his companions from discovering a feat of genetic engineering that will transform Mars like nothing has in over a billion years. The double helix of this masterwork twists all the way back to Earth and Felicity’s mummies. But if he fails, Lucas must decide whether to take up Mars’s sword, or to cast the weapon into a bog.

Have you ever wondered what the future holds, yet still remain curious about the past?

In The Furies’ Bog, author Deborah Jackson takes the reader on an amazing journey with astronauts looking at the future colonization of Mars while at the same time taking the reader on a historical journey with a group of graduate archeology students. These are two lines of time that become intertwined with the fate of humanity and the fears of extinction looming in the distance.

Deborah Jackson’s writing style is crisp and lively with humor, emotion and the human condition written in each character and event that occurs. I especially enjoyed how she was able to make each character three-dimensional, each had a rich back story, strong emotions and just like everyday life, their own secrets and weaknesses.

Ms. Jackson does a wonderful and skilled job at describing the setting for both very different plotlines. Initially, it can be somewhat difficult to follow the two story lines as they play out, but soon enough the reader begins to see how the past research and events on Earth relate to the adventurous Mars colonization research. Deep treachery and greed soon enter the equation and both stories take tremendous sweeps and turns, bringing the reader on an amazing journey that is so deep that one feels immersed in the story itself.

The author is able to put the reader into the forefront of the action as each adventure has its own suspense, action and intrigue. Each unfolding event pulls the reader deeper and deeper into the mystery and by the time the final pages come forward, the story comes to a conclusion that does not leave the reader grasping for more, but in all honesty, very content with the finishing sequence of events.

This is one story that I will not soon forget and I implore you to look beyond the separation of past and future and look into what The Furies’ Bog holds for you! You will not be disappointed!

Fallen Men by Brian O’Hare is a story of three priests. All are good, spiritual men but why does young Father Ray Canavan Ray find himself on trial in a Dublin court for statutory rape of a minor? And why is his equally popular friend, Father Dan Patterson, raucously accused of murder by a member of his congregation as he attempts to celebrate a Requiem Mass? And why does Canon Tony Mulholland so lose sight of his priestly responsibilities that he tries to cover up Ray’s indiscretions by sending him to hide in Italy ?

Father Ray Canavan is a diocesan priest who struggles with a troubling past that he can’t quite remember when he meets beautiful Maria and less than charming Father McGennity. The diocesan priest struggles to come to terms with his vocation, a family tragedy and the desire to do God’s Will.

Fallen Men is a phenomenal story of tragedy, redemption, and the amazing Grace of God. The immediate sin and subsequent attempt at cover by the Church is one that the reader may often see in the newspapers and tabloids. Yet, what happens behind the scenes is where the real magic by Brian O’Hare occurs.

The reader learns about the heart of the priest at the center of the scandal, the pain that the media and presses cause as well as the desire to be free from the sin of sexual immorality. The humanness that the author shares with the reader is one that cannot be understated. It is easy enough to believe that the transgression was horrific, but the pain and suffering that the transgressor feels is not one that should be overlooked. When the Church looks to control the future damage that will inevitably come, even more damage is done to both the priest and the victim.

The full impact of the events that occur are not lost on the reader. What I truly enjoyed was the deeper plot of becoming more Christ-like. Father Dan, one of Father Ray’s best friends sees spiritual ethics as black and white; immediately causing a rift in the strong friendship. The initial knee jerk reaction by Father Dan and the impact that the search for redemption has on all of the priests in the diocese are lessons that the reader is drawn into first hand.

This is one book that you do not want to miss if you truly want to know what happens in the heart of a priest!

It is not hard to see that greed and misfortune are the family’s undoing. Michael J. Sahno is a great author who can bring the daily tasks of office routine into a new light. The reader gets the comedy of the events, the irony of Paul’s career and in the final sequence of events, an ending that few would ever see coming. The author takes the time to put in small details of the work that is done by the employees and then takes great care into putting those details into the overall plotline.

The characters are deep, well thought out and are not placed in the story haphazardly. I especially enjoyed the girl’s nights out where it was always a simple outing and often would turn into a disaster! Paul also enjoyed his own struggles where his romantic life was one that was a struggle where the reader is silently screaming “don’t call her!”
