Hulking shadows emerge out of the chaotic flurries of the blizzard. Something is dying, and so they come, like vultures.

After months of struggling south to escape the zombie-infested remains of New York, a snowstorm traps 23-year old artist, Emily, and her son in an abandoned gas station. Starving and desperate, they encounter Aaron, an Army medic on a mission of his own, who offers them a ride to ease the journey.

The road is a long and dangerous place to travel, and every day brings a new threat. But fear and adrenaline also drive the two closer together; they find laughter and a budding attraction that starts to thaw at their numb and deadened feelings. And that’s when the pain really starts to hit, when places long thought lost prickle back to life. Eventually, they will have to fight not just for survival, but for a future together, or their broken world will swallow them whole.

Few things are in shorter supply in a post-zombie world than trust. Giving it to the wrong person could have dire repercussions, after all, and few people are in a position to take that chance. Unfortunately Emily doesn’t have many options left.

Post-apocalyptic fiction works best when the reader is occasionally thrown a curve ball, and this story is no exception to that rule. The even pacing and the inclusion of a few surprising twists to some tropes that are common in this genre made me wish I could read the sequel immediately. I was especially mesmerized by how quickly Emily switches between protecting her son from the horrors of their predicament and scolding him for the types of shenanigans that all children get up to when left to their own devices. Including these experiences in the same scenes helped me get to know these characters very quickly and made the climax even more compelling.

Trying to survive in a world full of zombies is difficult enough for adults, but it becomes even more challenging when there’s a small child to protect. These factors on their own provide more than enough fodder for advancing the plot, so I was a little thrown off by why the possibility of a romantic relationship between Emily and Aaron is brought up so often. Given that this book is the first in a series and that both characters are teetering on the edge of survival when they first meet, I think it would have made more sense for this particular subplot to be introduced in a sequel instead. This novel is full of heart-stopping moments as is. It would have easily earned a much higher rating had more time been spent on the main plot.

With that being said, both Emily and Aaron have extremely well fleshed out personalities and backstories that make me wish for a prequel. Wondering what would happen to them next lead me to reading it from cover to cover over the course of a few days, and my curiosity only grew more insatiable as I realized how effortlessly they work as a team. Their strengths and weaknesses are well matched. They genuinely seem to enjoy one another’s company as soon as their friendship begins.

After Life Lessons is a promising beginning to an exciting new series. This is a great choice for anyone who loves zombie or post-apocalyptic fiction.

Catherine has spent her life being the perfect princess. She’s kept her hands clean, her head down, and most importantly—men at arm’s length. After all, most men are after only one thing, and for Cathy there’s a lot more at stake than her bed; she has to worry about the fate of an entire nation. But at the rate she’s going, Cathy is afraid she’ll give the Virgin Queen a run for her money. She is tired of waiting for someone good enough to come along. She has a plan, and it all hinges on seducing the one man who seems utterly unimpressed by all things royal. The one man she is tempted by more than any other . . .

When David arrives at the royal wedding of his friend, the newly ordained Duchess Samantha Rousseau, he expected to feel uncomfortable and out of his element, but he wasn’t prepared to be targeted by Prince Alex’s gorgeous younger sister. With Cathy’s giant blue eyes, killer figure, and sense of humor, it won’t take long before he gives in. But when he finds out just how innocent the crown princess really is, will he play the part of knight in shining armor or the dashing rogue?

Recklessly Royal is a sequel to Suddenly Royal and I highly recommend reading the first installment before reading the second one.

Cathy wants to be loved because she is a woman, but that is not easy when this woman comes with a title: Princess.

Princess Catharine was born as a princess and her whole life she dated men who either wanted to marry her to become closer to the throne or to sleep with her in order to brag with that fact, until David. David is an American who does not care about titles and royalties, but cares deeply about Catharine.

The attraction between Cathy and David is instant and it starts on the first few pages of the story, only to be pushed back a little in order to focus more on the life of Cathy as a princess and than just to get back in a full swing in the last third of the story. I really like the way the author develops the plot line, not just focusing on the romance of Cathy and David, but also giving me an insight into a life of princess. I found the author’s description very genuine, and I think that she did a marvelous job with Cathy’s character. Cathy is a great princess; she is not spoiled or vain. On the contrary, she is compassionate, with a big heart and she is well aware of all the things that her title is carries with it. She is very mature for her age. But because of all that she is having a hard time relaxing and being herself, fortunately, in the end, with the help of David she manages to experience some other things beside royal duties.

I enjoyed this story tremendously, it is funny, the romance does not have any up and downs (but the plot has an interesting one), and it has few hot sex scenes. As a fan of Suddenly Royal I was very happy to see some of the secondary characters back in this story. All in all, a great read and wonderful sequel. I am eagerly waiting for the next installment in the series.

Years ago a terrifying attack left Kenzie McLaughlin trusting only a few men in her insular life on Whidbey Island—her brothers and her father. But when a sexy Navy guy who waltzes into the family pub doesn’t hesitate to makes his interest known, no amount of mental red flags are enough to keep her from being tempted to dip a toe back into the dating pool.

Twice burned in the past, Brett Craven has sworn off serious relationships, at least while he’s still in the Navy. A gorgeous redhead with a fiery wit and wariness of men, though, has blown his well-reasoned strategy out of the water.

There’s no denying the attraction between the two, but Kenzie teeters on a tightrope anchored on one end by hope, the other by caution. Because if she lets her guard down long enough to fall for Brett, it could leave her vulnerable to the one man who’s been left free to prey upon her fear.

The McLaughlin series keeps getting better with every book. As usual, Shelli Stevens did a great job on this one. She created an edge to the suspense in Loch and Key. It made the story more interesting, though it was the wonderful romance that reeled me in. I am hooked!

I had been looking forward to Kenzie getting her own shot at love. There were so many roadblocks for her to overcome that the drama was thick. I mean, this was a girl who struggled in the aftermath of a brutal attack. She was shut down essentially. Yet, she wanted to take that chance and felt ashamed that she couldn’t take that first step. She had a lot of regrets and guilt. Most of all, Kenzie had tremendous courage. That’s how I saw her character from the beginning. So it took a special kind of man to sweep her off her feet. Brett was the man for the job. With his slow southern drawl, he seemed perfect at first. It soon became clear that Brett was gun shy. His white hat was a bit tarnished when he ticked me off by hanging my girl out to dry. Though he did take his time, he finally made it up to her. Yet, the the threat that is never far from her mind comes roaring back to hurt Kenzie. The author kept the suspense at a low level for most of the book, only to jack it up in high gear for a harrowing event. I’d say that it was drama and suspense at it’s finest.

It was the romance that got to me though. It was sweet. It was slow burning because it needed to be that way. Oh but it was incendiary once the flame was lit. The thing that I liked the most about their relationship – aside from the fantastic chemistry- was the warmth in their relationship. It was all very believable to me, which made the book a pleasure to read.

Loch and Key was a great read for me. The story was good. The suspense was good. The drama was good. The writing was excellent. I loved it. Now, what’s up next in the series? I’m guessing it’s Aleck and Delonna. I can’t wait!

Ally Tobin left New York after one too many bad dates, determined to rebuild a stable life and career as a private investigator in Silicon Valley. But when the man she knew as one name walks into her office with another, will her curiosity once again lead her to risk her heart?

The last thing Special Agent Jared Green needs is “security risk” stamped on the resume of his latest undercover identity. Especially by the woman his job forced him to leave in New York without any explanation.

He’s good at playing a part. She’s good at catching a fake. Can they trust enough to give love another chance?

Ally Tobin can hardly believe it when she sees the photo attached to a resume on a job application she’s reviewing. The man is undeniably her ex-lover, but the name and fictitious history to go with him is puzzling to say the least. When Jared secretively scrawls a note asking if she can meet him for dinner, she agrees – against her better judgment. Jared Green regrets leaving Ally in the lurch like he did, but working undercover is difficult and dangerous. Now he’s been offered a second chance, and he doesn’t plan to make the same mistakes again.

I found it really refreshing how the author hasn’t just let her hero get off the hook with his bad behavior. This is not a story where a quick grin, a few sexy moves and a simple “I’m sorry” win the heroine’s heart back over again. Ally makes Jared work for his atonement and the deeply emotional writing really won me over. Usually I’m not so keen on heroes who wear their hearts on their sleeve and over-talk everything, like a woman is wont to do. But I also realized Ally and Jared’s situation wasn’t something that the usual male uncommunicative response (or the other common “I’ll seduce her till she can’t think straight” approach) would work. Ally and Jared had some genuine issues, baggage that needed talking and a rebuilding of trust to right things between them, and I feel the author gave the reader that in spades.

Amongst the romantic relationship, there’s also a secondary plotline of someone stealing intellectual data from the company. I was a little disappointed how most of the work Jared did hunting down the thief was done off-camera. Indeed, I was surprised when mid-way through the book Ally asked if Jared was making any progress, and he simply said they’d found him and named the person responsible. None of the work, searching or detective side of this plot was really shown to the reader and I found it made this secondary plot seem very weak – as if it had just been thrown in as a reason for Jared to be present at the company and reconnect with Ally.

If you’re looking for a strongly emotional romance with a smoking hot love scene that leaves little to the imagination this is an excellent book to try. While there is a plot around the stealing of intellectual property, I found the main focus to be on the rebuilding of trust and connection between Ally and Jared, and the establishment of their relationship after Jared has left Ally high and dry. Filled with emotion and chemistry, I really enjoyed this novella.

Motivated by fond memories, Sam Martin impulsively buys the vacation house of his childhood. Along with the fixer-upper, though, he seems to have acquired a new companion. An unusual women, who fabricates stories and insists she belongs to his land.

That woman is Floree. Over a century ago, a spell saved her life, and since then she’s existed between two worlds—selkie and human. Now, like a ghost, she is fading. She fears succumbing to her selkie side completely and longs for human contact.

At first, Sam just wants Floree to go away. But as he spends more time with her, his fascination grows—and not only because of her ethereal beauty. Her life’s story begins to make a terrible kind of sense.

They say that time heals all wounds. Floree’s hasn’t seen this happen yet, though, and she died more than a hundred years ago.

Sam and Floree’s relationship grows so slowly that at times I felt as though I were reading a full-length novel. Ms. Spencer allows both characters ample time to get to know one another, and her effort pays off in how natural it seems for Floree and Sam to gradually warm up to each other. The chemistry between them is genuine and while they have very different personalities it was interesting to see what they had in common.

I would have liked to learn more about the spell that has restricted Floree for so many years. The explanation for the paranormal elements in this novella was a little sparse. It would have been especially helpful to know what the rules of her enchantment were as the plot progresses as I was occasionally confused by the boundaries of them.

Strong, even pacing made it hard for me to put this book down. From the very first paragraph I became intensely curious about what would happen to these characters next. Tantalizing hints about Floree’s past are mentioned early on that only intensified my desire to keep reading. Certain tales are almost impossible not to read in one sitting, and this is one of them!

Floree comes across as an incredibly modern person for someone who was born well over a hundred years ago. The explanation for why she is so accustomed to nearly all of the social and technological changes that have occurred since she became a selkie doesn’t quite make sense given other information about what her life was like after her transformation.

Some of the best scenes in this story include detailed descriptions of the decaying vacation house and quiet cove where Sam and Floree live. The setting is as lonely as it is beautiful, and even the eerie passages fit in quite well with the rest of the plot. It is plotted out so meticulously that I could easily imagine what every nook and cranny looks like as I read.

Selkie Beach kept me entertained until the final paragraph. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in being spirited away to a different time and place.

She might look like an angel…

The moment orphaned American heiress Titania “Tansy” Danforth arrives on English shores she cuts a swath through Sussex, enslaving hearts and stealing beaux. She knows she’s destined for a spectacular titled marriage—but the only man who fascinates her couldn’t be more infamous…or less interested.

A hardened veteran of war, inveterate rogue Ian Eversea keeps women enthralled, his heart guarded and his options open: why should he succumb to the shackles of marriage when devastating good looks and Eversea charm make seduction so easy?

…and Heaven has never been hotter.

When Ian is forced to call her on her game, he never dreams the unmasked Tansy—vulnerable, brave, achingly sensual—will tempt him beyond endurance. And fight as he will, this notorious bachelor who stood down enemies on a battlefield might finally surrender his heart…and be brought to his knees by love.

Sometimes first impressions can be quite misleading…

At first glance, Miss Titania Danforth seems like an angel. Her eyes, as her guardian the Duke of Falconbridge notes, are the color innocence would be if innocence had a color. But as he soon finds out, Miss Danforth is not quite what she seems. Titania, known as Tansy, is an incorrigible flirt who can’t resist trying—and generally succeeding— to captivate every man she meets. When she meets the duke’s brother-in-law Ian Eversea, however, her polished charm deserts her.

Ian has plans for his life after the army and the East India Company. He intends to sail the world—China, India, Africa, Brazil—and he’s saved enough to money to be gone for years. His plans definitely do not include falling for an innocent young miss, no matter how vigorously she pursues him. Ian is a rugged, strong, battle-scarred man who doesn’t necessarily fit the traditional Regency mold, but that just makes him a perfect match for the equally unconventional heroine.

When Tansy and Ian meet, it doesn’t go well, and I loved that she makes such a negative impression on him because she’s trying too hard. He’s unimpressed with her because all he sees is a forward, importunate miss who’s too innocent to know what she’s playing at, and she’s too dazzled by his looks to see beyond them or even maintain her poise. As the book unfolds and they begin to know each other better, they see beyond those initial impressions to the real person underneath. Each of them is burdened by the past, and eventually they see their own pain reflected in each other. It’s a depth of characterization that makes for a satisfying romance.

I will say this story may not be for readers who like lots of authentic details and atmosphere in their historical novels. The author presents nineteenth century England as an essentially classless society where sergeants move in the same circles as captains and duchesses hang out in kitchens. Despite its light-on-history feel, though, I enjoyed the story for its own sake. Nor had I read other books in the Pennyroyal Green series—this is the ninth one—but I never felt confused or left behind. The author often refers to the stories of other characters, but she gives enough detail that I don’t think familiarity with the previous books is necessary for the enjoyment of this one.

Overall, this is a fun, absorbing read that presents a lovable heroine and a sigh-worthy hero. I think any historical fan will enjoy it.

Clover has a peculiar effect on men—they turn into homicidal lunatics. She decides to swear off men and gives up her dream of the perfect boring suburban life. She hadn’t counted on finding a very large, very yummy Viking in her favorite part of the library courtyard. Clover finds she has to trust this Viking, because she’s in danger from gangsters hunting her to collect on her brother’s debts.

Rune is a thousand-year-old Viking trying to escape from a curse. He must fall in love with the woman the gods choose for him or suffer eternity in Norse Hel. Nine times he’s tried and nine times he’s failed. This is his last attempt. Resigned to his doom, he vows to save Clover from the gods’ petty games before his death. As the last round of the gods’ game begins, Rune discovers there are worse things than losing his soul.

A book that can make me laugh out loud or giggle is a keeper. Spell Bound not only has a terrific sense of fun and adventure, it also has a lot of heart and enough external and internal conflict to keep me wide-eyed with fascination. It has spells and curses, and the most wicked of all is the curse of a very devious and obsessive compulsive Loki.

I had my first taste of Ms. Weylin’s writing style in the short story, Dark Forest. As amazing as that snippet was, I wondered at the time what she could do with a longer story length and I found my answer in reading Spell Bound. She knocked my socks off.

The only reason that this book isn’t a solid five star book was because the editing wasn’t flawless. There was a word spelled completely wrong and a few words that should have been plural, but weren’t. Truly, those are the only issues with this story. I cannot fault anything else. I loved the hero, Rune. A man who’s lived under a curse for a thousand years, he has had the time to become bitter and angry but he never did. It’s said that once a man meets the right woman, he’ll be a better man. It certainly is true in this book. With Clover, he finds himself wanting to be truthful instead of feeding her a rehearsed ‘safe’ line that he’s used with every woman before. He found that he could laugh with Clover and eventually, learn what to love and be loved is all about. This tale is as romantic as a book can get.

Clover is simply adorable. Okay, so she cries at the drop of a hat but what would be annoying and weak in another character, is a sign of strength and character in the heroine. It’s endearing and how it affects the hero is profound. In fact, it’s one of the things he ends up loving about her. You have to read the book to understand why. The heroine is funny, clever, interesting and well rounded. Clover and Rune are spectacular together.

My absolute favorite section of the book is when Rune met his biological dad. As soon as Clover quipped, “These are not the droids you are looking for”, I was a goner. What came after was one of the most fun dialogue and character interactions I have read in a long time. It’s what made this book go from a good read to a fantastic read. I could relate to Clover because she loved the same movies I do and she conversed the same way as I do with my own friends – movie quotes. Ms. Weylin is an author after my own heart.

Ironically, the villains of the tale aren’t necessarily villainous. They’re…like Loki in the recent Thor movies. Not totally bad, certainly not virtuous, just gods being gods – you know, bored, moronic, petty and prone to self-centeredness. When Rune tells one of them a glaring truth, it was pivotal. It showed me that he finally did understand what true love was about, and his words struck home as probably nothing ever said to a god before had ever done. It wasn’t until the ending that I got to see the fruit of Rune’s words. Again, it’s romantic. And sweet and yes, even humorous. However, there is one true villain in the piece and his demise is short, sweet if a little gruesome. But then again, what can one expect from a Viking and a Celt?

Secondary characters are key. I liked Law and want to know more about him. He has his own issues but Ms. Weylin certainly fleshed him out enough while he helped Clover and Rune for me to want to see him find his own happy ever after someday. He’s intriguing and sexy in his own right.

Speaking of sexy, when Rune and Clover get together, it’s steamy, sexy, romantic, sometimes funny but in all ways that count, perfect. I loved the build-up, the seduction, and when they finally culminated their passion, I was a very happy reader.

Spell Bound is a true delight and a worthy read for any paranormal romance reader. It has an adventurous race against time, the breaking of curses, mixed up family dynamics, laughter, sexy seductions and a happy ever after that can inspire an ear to ear grin. I heartily recommend this book and this author to other readers. Ms. Weylin sure knows her craft and I’m thrilled I discovered her.

Aiden Hyde holds a dark secret. Proving his innocence would reveal his werewolf heritage. When a new werewolf in town sets his sights on Rose, he has no choice but to step in and protect his mate—whether she knows it or not.

I was in the mood for a quick romance and a little paranormal hijinks and what I found was a fantastic, fast moving, well rounded short story. I don’t know how Ms. Weylin fit everything in, but I think it’s because she focused on what makes a story work. It was the fastest hour of my day.

Dark Forest introduced a typical werewolf story with some unusual elements. It hinges on how the author created her hero, Aiden. I liked the level of angst that plagued him, how he accepted his role in the town and how he always tried to do the right thing – even if it cost him his happiness.

I also enjoyed the manipulations of a loving grandmother towards her granddaughter, Rose. If I’m not mistaken, it sounded as though the heroine, Rose, has some OCD issues, or it could be anxiety attacks. One thing that tickled me is that when things really came to a head, the heroine proved without a doubt that she has a backbone of steel when something, or someone she loves, is in danger.

Although the novelette doesn’t have time to really delve into either Aiden’s or Rose’s point of view as much as it might have, the author presented enough to make me believe that their romance, their falling in love, and their willingness to commit to the other, despite the unusual bumps in the road, was natural and acceptable. Even though this tale is told from both points of view, the author didn’t make either one omniscient. There were enough surprises to please me.

The sex was incredibly steamy, seductive and well written. It was just enough to make me happy.

The villain erupts on the scene fast and there were no surprises as to whom the culprit was regarding the town’s current mystery. As brief as he was, the author painted him with an effective swipe of the ‘nasty brush’ to make me believe he was a bounder, a sick individual and a worthy antagonist.

Give Dark Forest a whirl if you want a surprising gem of a read. What it doesn’t have in quantity, it makes up for in quality. I quite enjoyed myself.

So naturally I was drawn to the premise of April Love, a novella about a secretary in 1958 who falls in love with her boss. That the romance takes place on Grand Cayman Island just adds Caribbean flair to the appeal.

Eleanor Martin is the perfect secretary and office manager. She’s her boss’s right hand woman, knows everything about the company, and is always one step ahead of his requirements. The fact that he happens to be gorgeous just adds spice to her interesting job. Her boss, architect Jess Norton, is a bit of a playboy but never lets his private life affect his dedication to his craft. When a commission requires him to travel to Grand Cayman, and no project manager is available to go with him, it is only natural that he bring along his super-efficient secretary instead. Once in the sultry tropical atmosphere of the islands, though, their relationship changes in ways neither anticipated.

The idea that leaving their familiar surroundings makes Jess and Eleanor see each other in new ways really appealed to me, but the premise didn’t hold my attention as well as I would have liked. For a novella, April Love takes a surprisingly long time to get going, and when it does, it doesn’t spend enough time developing the characters or building the emotion of the romance. Interactions that should draw the reader into Jess and Eleanor’s changing relationship are often summarized (“They sat there for the longest time, enjoying the warm evening, the cool water, and each other’s company”) or happen off-page (“They’d spent the remainder of the evening in light conversation”) while story space is expended on minor details like business arrangements and clothing choices. That lack of characterization, combined with the author’s tendency to tell rather than show, gave the story a flat quality and made me feel I had little sense of Jess and Eleanor as people and still less idea why they fell in love. Even their physical encounters were more matter-of-fact than involving (“when she offered no resistance, he pressed his lips to hers a second time”).

I wish there had been more atmosphere of the fifties. Beyond a reference to some baseball players of the era and mentions of the Pat Boone song of the title, this story could have taken place any time. In fact, I only remembered it was supposed to be the fifties when I wondered things like: would it really have been so easy to fly from Detroit to Grand Cayman in the pre-jet age and would there have been multiple daily flights to choose from? And did men wear shorts and casual shirts when dining in opulent hotels back then?

Overall, though, this story has an appealing premise and an attractive hero and heroine I wanted to root for, even if I didn’t enjoy their story as much as I would have liked.  I’m certainly not sorry I read this, and still enjoyed much of it. So, if you’re in the mood for a short read that takes place during the Golden Age of Rock and Roll, April Love might be just what you’re looking for.

Chicago assistant state’s attorney Zac Hennings just got handed a political hot potato: keeping the convicted murderer in a high-profile case behind bars. He’s up against his most formidable—and alluring—adversary. First-year law student Emma Sinclair is passionately fighting to free her brother. But she needs the take-no-prisoners prosecutor’s help.

Caught between attraction and letting a killer go free, Zac walks a tightrope. Until evidence surfaces that the real culprit’s still out there. With his career and Emma’s life on the line, Zac races to right a terrible wrong. Refusing to back down, he’ll bring a cunning lawbreaker to justice—or die trying.

Unexpectedly complex, The Prosecutor satisfied all my needs in a romantic suspense.

Emma Sinclair is convinced her brother, Brian, was wrongfully convicted of murder and has been working feverishly for months to find a way to have his conviction overturned. She catches a break with a death bed confession from one of the detectives on the case who says the “positive” ID from a witness, wasn’t positive at all and that the cops on the case led the witness.

She manages to find a lawyer to take her case and, as fate would have it, said lawyer is the sister of the prosecutor, Zac Hennings — and both siblings are determined to win. With all the pieces on the board, the story starts rolling in earnest right from the start.

The reader is pretty certain right off that Emma’s brother, Brian, is innocent. That’s not what the book is about. What the story covers is finding out the truth … a truth that is difficult, convoluted and full of red herrings. The author does a good job setting up many possibilities in very few pages.

The attraction between Emma and Zac is palpable, too. At heart, he’s a good guy and really is searching for the truth. But it’s hard for him to consider that there was malfeasance by the police. The problem behind all of the previous investigation is that the victim was the daughter of a respected cop, and everyone wanted to see her killer punished. Zac is no exception.

Of course, being on opposite sides creates friction, but they can’t deny what they feel, either. It’s a believable romance full of tension and drama.

Overall, I really liked this book. Sure there were a few things that stretched my belief a bit, and the climax happened a little too quickly, but those were little things that didn’t significantly affect my thorough enjoyment. Now I wonder … will Penny and Brian get their own stories? Please?
