She is beautiful, brave, kind, resourceful, smart, and with skills learned in the underbelly of London’s mean streets and those learned from Lady Sinclair, the Iron Countess, she copes remarkable well. She keeps herself alive and helps keep the man she loves alive. The caring and loyalty she gives and receives is a vivid thread in the tapestry of the story.

Warrick Fitzhugh has no desire to be part of the Ton’s doings other than to use them to help him save the network of spies he is a part of. With “soldier’s neurosis” (now called post traumatic stress disorder), he has to fight battles on more than one front. If you read the first of this series WHEN YOU GIVE A DUKE DIAMOND, you will recognize many of the secondary characters that offer intriguing little side stories that add texture to IF YOU GIVE A RAKE A RUBY. However, the diabolical characters like Bayley, Gabriel, and the absentee Lucifer add a rough texture that chafes the nerves and causes the reader to shudder. Their disregard for human life is chilling making Fallon’s and Warrick’s encounters with them heart-pounding fearful experiences.

Shana Galen taps into deep emotions to create characters that live life on the edge and live it full speed ahead. Her settings for various actions come alive to reveal the time, social mores and depravities vividly as the characters deal with conflicts and dangers aplenty. Of course, at other times, the love scenes she creates take the reader on a sensual, ecstatic, lost-in-love experience that is breathtaking and beautiful.

This well-written regency romance with its remarkable characters keeps one turning pages. It races along with scary action and with love that shimmers and shines even in the darkest of times as the enigmatic Fallon and the war-scarred Warrick find their happy-eve-after.

Ten-year-old Brunin FitzWarin is an awkward misfit in his own family. As an act of encouragement, his father sends him to be fostered as a knight in the household of Joscelin, Lord of Ludlow. Here he meets the lord’s youngest daughter, Hawise, and a strong friendship is formed.

When Brunin aids his lord in supporting Prince Henry in his battle against King Stephen for the English crown, his own land comes under threat. As the war for the crown and the land rages, Brunin must defeat the shadows of his childhood and put to use all he has learned, confronting his future head on.

For the reader, Shadows and Strongholds is a mindboggling sojourn in twelfth-century England with characters who struggle to hold on to their places of power and position continuously. They know the king can take it all away on a whim, so they fight his battles for him and court his favor at all cost. How love can survive, much less flourish in such an environment makes a fantastic tale. Another astonishing thing is the influence women have.

Brunin FitzWarin is told by Jascelin de Dinan, who fosters him, that he should never underestimate the influence of a woman in the scheme of things. Brunin, who’d been belittled and made to feel worthless by his grandmother Mellette, has a lot of maturing to do before he comprehends what Jascelin means. After a miserable life with his own family, Brunin finds things quite different in the de Dinan household. Love and mutual respect govern the family’s dealings with each other—a new experience for him.

As he grows from a withdrawn, quiet, fearful little boy to a knight to be reckoned with on the battlefield as well as a man able to love and be loved, the reader is immersed in the myriad of emotional and physical battles he fights to come into his own. His common sense in later years amazes considering his heritage and adversities he faced before he finds his place in the scheme of things.

The de Dinan girls Sibbi, who is older than Brunin; Hawise, the tomboy; and Marion, near Hawise’s age who was brought home by Jascelin when just a tiny traumatized waif are all a part of Brunin’s growing up years. Sibbi doctors cuts, scraps, and bruises; Hawise plays with him and challenges him in all kinds of endeavors. Marion clings and dreams of her marriage to him and builds her own warped world around that dream.

Many of the secondary characters touch Brunin’s life; but his arch enemies are Gilbert de Lacy and de Lacy’s knight Ernalt de Lyle. These two along with Brunin’s grandmother prove to be characters one can grow to hate. Their pride, arrogance, lack of consideration for others is appalling. One can almost feel the maliciousness emanating from them.

Elizabeth Chadwick does a phenomenal job of making characters seem real, of weaving a plot that ebbs, flows, and even runs wild at times. She does a magnificent job of pulling the reader into the historical time and engages all the senses to make situations throb with life. The love stories keep the reader on tenterhooks much of the time. How love survives in such harsh times leads on to believe that love is truly the greatest of all emotions. Pride deals it some bruising blows and circumstances threaten to bludgeon it to death, but it abides in a secret place not to be denied.

Ms. Chadwick in her unique style weaves a plot together with bloody battles, clandestine alliances, and struggles for power, pride of possessions, hatefulness, haughtiness, and downright evil, cruel deeds. Yet, she never lets the reader forget about the steadfastness of true love and the strength it gives even in the darkest of times. Shadows and Strongholds is and exquisitely written, compelling tale—a keeper to be enjoyed more than one time.

Everything is calm in Cadillac, Texas until Aunt Agnes declares war on Violet Prescott, the president of the Blue-Ribbon Jalapeño Society, just in time for the annual jubilee. But after the festivities—and the hostilities—are over, it’s four friends who are left standing, proving once again that friendship is forever.

Welcome to Cadillac, Texas, the home of the Blue-Ribbon Jalapeno Society and where the secret of growing hot jalapenos is a SECRET. A big secret, that isn’t shared with anyone. Not even the other residents…

Ms. Brown’s story reminded me a bit of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg, except in this case it’s jalapenos. It’s the same kind of small town where everybody knows everyone else’s secrets and friendships are for a lifetime. She also peppers the story with some real live characters.

She gives you Violet, who runs the Jalapeno society with an iron hand. She also gives you Agnes, who comes over with a shotgun to save Trixie from a man who was assaulting her. The fact that it was her ex-husband who was over for a little Wednesday night rendezvous didn’t matter to Agnes. Then there’s the fact that Cathy finds herself marrying a nice steady man (Violet’s son) and Violet wants to run her the way she does the society.

I found all of Ms. Brown’s characters heartwarming and fun to read about. They’re all endearing in some form even if it’s just easy to hate them. She forms a central friendship between four young women that is believable and amusing. They get in trouble a lot and don’t seem to worry about it much. Independent women characters have always appealed to me. Even those who aren’t good at being independent and making their choices find out how to do that before the book ends.

I had so much fun reading this story, I’d enjoy seeing these characters in another book. Their story isn’t done yet. And love is still very confusing.

The danger-infested action, the sub-plot of Annie Johnson and Samir Al-Shennaive and Ajaya add depth to the maIn plot and reveal much about the characters and their motivation.

The actions of clandestine agencies and the military that Catherine Mann makes so real keep the story at an adrenaline-pumping level much of the time, but her love scenes take the reader to an entirely different place on the emotional continuum where just wanting to feel and rejoice in the ecstasy of that mystical, timeless connection of true lovers takes the readers breath away.

Side stories seem minor yet they have a major impact on the outcome of tense situations that help make Free Fall a breath-holding read at times.

If a reader is searching for a romance story which has an effective outside conflict that doesn’t allow all that drama and suspense to darken the growing relationship between two people, then this book is totally perfect.

What I mean is, A Howl for a Highlander uses the conflict to spice up, speed along and stir the plot making the relationship between Duncan and Shelley possible, fascinating and thoroughly entertaining. How Shelley reacts to Duncan’s edicts showcases how strong a female character she is. When she gets this twinkle in her eye and spouts off naughty dialogue that encourages Duncan’s kilt to rise, it makes for fun reading. When she stands behind her man and growls, she shows us a heroine who is the perfect match for the equally growly hero.

Duncan, on the other hand, is a man who needed taming. For so long he’s been the fixer, the doer and the protector; he’s become used to people jumping when he says to. Shelly doesn’t jump; she glares and does her own thing. I liked that the hero respected her for that. It drove him nuts, absolutely, but in the end, he wouldn’t have her any other way. The most fun aspect of his courting her is his inability to resist her. The scene with that tiny string thing was hot. The whole swimming in the ocean part was sexy and I had a ball reading about the hero fighting all those pirates. And the term, “male pissing contest” sort of took on a whole new meaning in this story. I giggled. I know for the wolf it was a serious thing but then Shelley comes along and did a certain something, it had me appreciating her more while it had Duncan green with jealousy thinking about what “might” happen. He’s such an all-around hunk of a Highlander and he fits the role beautifully.

The villain is potentially a red herring. Because of the dubious nature and the many hoops of conjecture that Duncan and Shelley have to jump through in trying to figure things out while trying to stay alive, I’m not going to explore too much lest I give a crucial plot point away. I’ll just say that in a way, I feel sad for the villain because I really think it’s more nurture than nature that played a roll in choosing the direction of life’s choices. I’m being purposely ambiguous but I can affirm that the villain was well written, cleverly positioned and placed throughout the story as well as effective at being bad. As evil and horrific as “dead bodies in a pool” sounds, it is actually quite comedic and I did laugh. Call me twisted.

Another fun aspect of this story comes from some of the secondary characters. There are some quick cameos from Duncan’s brother Ian, a Cavalry moment with one of the other brothers and Uncle Ethan. I don’t think there’d be a book on its own dedicated to Shelley’s uncle or uncles but they’d sure be a fun secondary line of romance in future books. Just think – gruff, hardened bachelors finding love in the old country with equally staunch and canny wolf-women making them toe the line and the fireworks that ensue – yes, indeed, I saw a hint of that in this book and it made me chuckle.

When the action got a bit tense and eventful, Ms. Spear managed to keep the writing focused and tight, insuring that a reader will experience the effect of heightened blood pressure, quickened breath and, if so inclined, the biting of nails when the big fight/chase scene occurs.

A Howl for a Highlander tells a tale that defines the word, ‘sexy’. There’s nothing more fun than being seduced by a confident Scottish Highlander who doesn’t mind letting you know what’s under his kilt. What is more refreshing is reading about a woman who is not intimidated by him in the least, but stands nose to nose, tail to tail and comes out on top – at least for a little while. Add to that, the very tantalizing descriptions of a man and his first Speedo and a reader has a lot to smile about while reading this latest adventure by Ms. Spear. My advice to readers is to leave plenty of time to kick back and visit with Duncan and Shelley because once started, this book is hard to put down. It’s that fun.

Right away the author paints a picture of a woman you can feel sorry for. She’s belittled and scorned at every turn and when it seems all hope is lost, her circumstances turn on a dime. What follows is a journey on which she learns to have hopes again, and it was fascinating to watch her relearn how to have fun. It plucked at my emotions to see her realize how much she’d been denied and that she no longer had to cower and keep her thoughts and observations to herself. A reader sees Charlotte come into her own and it was terrific to read.

One of the highlights for the heroine is the hero, Alec. He’s a frustrated hero on many levels not the least of which is his being robbed of actually being a hero. Not that he would admit to wanting to be, but the signs where that that Alec had feelings for Charlotte. Watching him deny his attraction, or run and hide behind his duties, or run a mental horror story of a list of why he shouldn’t pursue her was at times both amusing and frustrating to read. Once again the technique is used of having the male lead in a story be plagued by events he witnessed as a child affecting and directing his adult life – until certain revelations turn his beliefs and his understanding of the world on its ear. Fortunately, the ploy wasn’t overdone or heavy handed and served as a convincing plot conflict because the author used the technique well.

On the other hand a technique that almost made me motion sick was the head hopping. Sometimes it works, depending on placement and the amount it’s used in a book. In this case I found it very jarring and disruptive to have so many switches in point of view. I believe there were four. I can perhaps see why the author did it because she had not one but two romances going. The second love story being that of Charlotte’s maid, Lucy and Alec’s servant, Ethan. It was sweet, and certainly the couples’ lives intertwined in such a way to keep a reader fascinated. But no matter how well the scenes were written, the delivery was choppy and broken and it left me feeling like I had to work harder to read the book.

The main conflict is the solving of a crime and who it eventually turned out to be. The author wove the mystery of who could have done it very well and it wasn’t until almost the end that I figured out who it was. Ms. Ashford was clever with her clues. It was a bit of a surprise to find out who it was because no one seemed capable of such a scandalous thing. The author even threw in a few red herrings, so I was appropriately and convincingly diverted.

Once Again a Bride is a clever and entertaining historical romance sure to please many a reader. When Charlotte and Alec get to experience the ultimate in loving, it’s spicy and pleasing. The story also left me wondering how in the world Alec’s cousin was going to fare beyond this tale. I loved Callie, the naughty kitty and enjoyed getting to know Alec’s sisters. There is a lot to be entertained by in this book and it’s worth reading a romance about a time in England’s history that I don’t often see dealt with. I’m glad I read it.

To prevent three royal dukes from marrying their way onto the throne, heroic, selfless agents for the crown will be dispatched…to seduce the dukes’ intended brides. These wickedly debauched rakes will rumple sheets and cause a scandal. But they just might fall into their own trap…

After he’s blamed for a botched assignment during war, former cavalry officer Rhys Warrick turns his back on “honor.” He spends his nights in brothels doing his best to live down to the expectations of his disapproving family. But one last mission could restore the reputation he’s so thoroughly sullied. All he has to do is seduce and ruin Miss Olivia Symon and his military record will be cleared. For a man with Rhys’s reputation, ravishing the delectably innocent miss should be easy. But Olivia’s honesty and bold curiosity stir more than Rhys’s desire. Suddenly the heart he thought he left on the battlefield is about to surrender…

Trading favors and wagering against an admitted rake was Olivia’s first mistake. The second was falling for him.

However, she may not have to search far since one of the royal dukes has made his interest known, but first she must be “interviewed”. Olivia is not so naive to be unaware that the royal duke’s real interest is mostly in her untouched state and fertile future to secure his own seat on the throne. It’s all politics, but for the sake of her family’s future and mostly that of her sisters, Olivia may not have much choice in her match with the aging duke. That is until temptation walks in upsetting her quiet life and challenges her to become a knowledgeable virgin.

Lord Rhys Warrington lives a wastrel existence after a defeat in battle leaves him and his two best mates mired in scandal. Three years after the offending event, Rhys now finds himself faced with the proposition of a lifetime to restore his and his family’s honor. But it will mean seduction of the wrong kind of girl – a virgin. As an admitted libertine and rake without any gentlemanly qualities, Rhys should have no problem bedding the unknowing chit and ruining her chances of a royal dukedom. It is Rhys’ conscience, however, that poses the problem and controls even his most basic of instincts especially his physical responses. When it becomes clear someone else is threatening Olivia’s physical well-being, but with deadly intentions, Rhys must decide his priorities and what his true intentions toward the lady are.

A story complete with an overbearing mother, an unlikely romance and a deadly whodunit mystery to solve set in a time where propriety and acceptance in high society were the concerns of the day. However, a Hymen Hunt is underway and there are several players who have a stake, political, vengeful or otherwise, in the outcome. By these twisted circumstances is how our leads meet and their headstrong personalities and brilliant banter kept the story paced perfectly. I really enjoyed the sexual banter and how the whole “knowledgeable virgin” venture led to some very steamy scenes.

Olivia is not the typical heroine in description and I believe Rhys said it best when he described her as “endearingly awkward”. On the other hand, Rhys fits the physical embodiment of a rake perfectly, but with a much deeper side that only comes out when he’s around Olivia. It’s his rakish attitude that makes him charming and frustrating at the same time, but it definitely keeps things interesting. My complaint comes from these two falling for each other too soon and I would have liked to see Olivia’s intelligence shine just a bit more by her holding off on Rhys’ advances longer.

I believe the author duo did a fabulous job taking historically realistic events, people, places, and things and twisting them in their own imaginative way. Since we were introduced to three determined rakes in need of reforming and vindication at the beginning of this story, I am eagerly waiting to see what happens with the other two. For all historical romance fans this is definitely one not to be missed.

He and Eve shy away from each other because of a kiss under the mistletoe in an uninhibited moment when Eve was quite young. He has always been like another brother, but little by little, even though both of them vow they are just protecting each other from the social “hunters”, they find a unique connection that begins to smolder, sizzle then flame into a breathtaking love.

As Marquis of Deene, Lucas has a load of responsibility to deal with, something quite new to him. Also, he is determined to gain custody of his dead sister’s child to honor his sister’s wish and to give the darling little Georgina a home and place in society that befits her heritage on her mother’s side. Lucas also has Anthony, his cousin, to deal with. Anthony has supervised the stewards over the Deene lands for years. He will inherit the title should Lucas die before producing an heir.

The conflicts that ensue create intriguing, often heart-pounding moments. But the most captivating and sparking moments are the ones that Eve and Lucas share as their love grows with the various members of the Moreland family giving it a nudge every chance they get.

Grace Burrowes’ stories about each of the Duke and Duchess’ of Moreland offspring as they find true love are all magical and Lady Eve’s story is one of the best of them. Even though the reader is immersed in Lucas and Eve’s story, we also get glimpses of how Eve’s siblings are faring and how they all still secretly maneuver to influence events, to protect their own, and nurture each other as well as their own young families.

Ms. Burrowes’ well-researched historical settings, her exquisite writing style, her talent to develop riveting characters, her skill in sprinkling humor in at just the right time, and her delectable, sensual, compelling love scenes make Lady Eve’s Indiscretion  a spellbinding, vicarious experience for the reader.

If you enjoy Regency historical, I recommend the entire series of books about the Morelands. Each book is quite different from the other yet they join in such ways as to show the strong, unbreakable ties that bind the family into a cohesive unit that will stand against the world to protect their own. The stories are replete with conflicts, rich with humor, and sizzle with love. They are like a set of jewels that go together with each of them uniquely cut to make them sparkle in their own special way.

I’m looking forward to Jenny’s story that will be the eighth book.

He was a Highland Rogue Wicked with a Bow and Just as Wicked with the Ladies.

Declan MacGregor hadn’t a care in the world beyond finding a soft bed and a willing woman…until he had to escort Lady Liadain Campbell to the English court. The woman needles him at every turn, but he can’t just abandon her to that vipers’ nest without protection.

She Never Asked for a Bodyguard…

Liadain wasn’t thrilled to be left in the care of her clan’s archrival. It was as if the man never had a lady tell him no before! And yet as whispers of treason swirl through the court and the threat of danger grows even sharper, her bitter enemy soon becomes the only one she can trust…

The strength and love of a good woman hold firm to save a rogue from himself and from false accusations.

Both Liadain Campbell and Declan MacGregor are like fish out of water at King James’ Court. They long for their Highlands far from the court intrigues, gossip, vindictiveness, and chicanery.

Liadain, the sister of the dead seventh earl of Argyll, Archie (The Bloody) Campbell, is a healer and had avoided the attention of brother as much as possible. She’d lived a quiet, useful life healing the villagers and whoever needed her care. While Liadain is a raven-haired, green-eyed beauty who is kind and delicate, she is not a pushover if crossed. Her tongue is sharp when she is riled but her humor makes her eyes sparkle when sparring with Declan in a easy give-and-take way. They have a unique friendship.

Declan MacGregor, the third son, has tried the patience of his family since the death of his father. Drink and women are his main interests. His Laird, his older brother Ciaran, sends him to escort their dead enemy’s sister to court. Declan feels he must stay to protect the naïve Liadain from the machinations that abound at court. He tries to do the right thing but doesn’t always succeed. Also, he does not realize there is an evil web being woven around him that could prove deadly.

Some of the secondary characters with ties back to The Bloody Campbell are devious and cunning antagonists. Even the disgusting Dunnehl and Caroline Armstrong that you may have met in a previous book, show up. Moreover, they have allies that add to the danger that threatens Declan.

Other secondary characters like Rosalia and Aisling, wives of Ciaran and Aiden MacGregor add humor, wisdom, and unswerving loyalty to the hero and heroine. The intrepid little boy John brings a special type of loyalty to the story.

Victoria Roberts blends in just enough seventeenth-century English history to set the reader firmly in the time and place but doesn’t overdo it. She uses it to augment the development of the characters making them vibrant and compelling. As the plot unfolds, her characters seem to come alive.

If you have read her previous books about the MacGregor clan, you will recognize some of the characters. It is captivating to catch up with how their lives are progressing. But most enchanting is getting to share an adventure with the irascible Declan and the determined Liadain as they mature and come into their own through emotional upheavals, near-death experiences, and an awakening of love that revs up the heart rate and heats the blood—love scenes sizzle.

Like the previous books in this series, X Marks the Scot is a keeper.
