I would have liked to see a little more attention paid to the ending. There were some loose strings in earlier scenes that were never tied up as neatly as I would have liked to see. While I do enjoy open-ended finales in general, this one would have been perfect if it had provided just a few more answers for the audience.

Maria, the protagonist, confused me a little bit at first. This is an incredible read, full of external and internal conflict. The author does a great job of putting the reader in Wynter’s head, seeing what she is feeling and seeing. The cult feels real, and explains how people can be drawn into such an environment. Wynter’s character goes through several transformations as she adjusts to the normal world, and then is forced to survive in a world going crazy. Her spirituality goes under the most change because she’s trying to force herself not to believe Magnus’s teaching of the end of the world and her soul going to hell.

Chris and she have a lot in common, although Wynter does not see it. He is dealing with adjusting to the real world after the war. Both are fumbling to find a place in this world. Wynter sees the worst, but then she is shown the strength and love that can also be shown in the world. A wonderful book full of characters that undergo many changes and you get a front view of it. It also is a little scary as this story could be true. I also enjoyed the love that Wynter and Chris have, and the love she had for her family.

I would recommend this to anyone.

The author’s decision to give her audience so much freedom to come up with our own theories about how and why this room became filled with evil was a smart one. I truly enjoyed devising my own theories about what was going on there before testing them against the clues the narrator provided.

As much as I loved the stories themselves, the thing that convinced me to give this collection a five-star rating were the short biographies of each author at the end of their piece. I didn’t know anything about some of them, so it was quite helpful to get a quick overview of their lives after I read their work.

Each driver also knows that this run could be their last, yet they decide to go anyway. They want the world to be healed so future generations can live a better life. So, each one offers different sacrifices to make sure that at least one truck makes it.

If you love people showing how strong they can be when adversity strikes, if you also enjoy watching a stricken world, and a different take on what happens when mankind harms the planet, then this might be the book for you.

The pacing was well done. This tale was labelled Action/Adventure for a good reason. There was often something going on in the plot that made me wonder how in the world the main character and his son, Drum, were going to survive their most recent brush with death. They rarely knew a moment of safety, and that made it impossible for me to stop reading.

I had a lot of trouble keeping track of the large cast of characters. There were so many of them and they were introduced in such big groups that I spent a lot of time trying to remember who was who. There simply wasn’t enough space for this reader to get to know them all as individuals, and that was a disappointment.

Some of the most interesting passages were the ones that explained how Drum came to be. Cyborgs obviously don’t enter this world like human babies do, so I was curious to discover why and how he was created. The answers the plot provided were quite satisfactory to me.

There were multiple punctuation errors in this book. While I was able to figure out what most of them were intending to say fairly quickly, it was distracting to keep finding them over and over again. Another round of editing could have cleared them up pretty quickly, and it would have made it easier for me to justify choosing a higher rating.

It was mind-blowing to think of a point set so far in the future that many humans have to trace their lineage for quite a while before they find an ancestor who was born on Earth. This one clue about when this story was supposed to take place was all I needed to begin imagining how different the lives of these characters would be from anything current humans have known.

While I certainly wouldn’t have expected the narrator to go into full detail about these things, it would have been nice to know a little more about how her mother figured out the obvious problems in those parts of the plot. I can’t go into more detail than this without giving away spoilers, but it is something I wondered enough about that I didn’t feel comfortable choosing the five-star rating I would have otherwise wanted to give to this tale.

With that being said, I adored the ending. The scientific possibilities it hinted might be part of our even more distant future made my brain tingle. I wished for just one more scene so that I could see how many of those hints might actually come true. It’s always fun when a story both wraps up satisfactorily and makes the audience crave more. This story struck that balance perfectly, and this is one of the biggest reasons why I gave it such a high rating.

The Destroyer was a creative vision of one possible version of humanity’s future that I’d recommend to anyone who loves wondering what the future might hold for our species.

The sibling relationship between Hasan and Tariq was well done. Despite growing up in the same environment, they’d turned out to be two completely different people in almost any way I could imagine. I find it interesting to see how siblings respond to each other when they’ve taken such divergent paths in life, and these two brothers definitely fit that bill.

I would have liked to see more attention paid to the ending. There wasn’t a lot of foreshadowing for it earlier on in the plot, so I was a little caught off guard at how it was all wrapped up. It would have been helpful to have a more detailed description of what the characters really experienced while they were out in the desert and so far removed from the rest of the world.

Mr. Nicholls spent the exact right amount of time describing what it’s like to live in the desert. Unlike many other climates, this one can be incredibly dangerous for even the most healthy and fit individual. It’s so hot there that dehydration is a constant concern, and it can happen much faster than the average person who isn’t acclimated to that kind of heat might assume. Luckily, Hasan and Tariq knew what to do to keep themselves safe, but I still enjoyed reading about all of the precautions they took in order to keep the job they were hired to do from being their last one.

Dune Time should be read by anyone who loves stories that can be interpreted in more than one way.

I picked this up for the Fantasy element with Romance for good measure, and while I enjoyed both in this story, it’s the action and characters that I enjoyed most!

This book has a lot of potential. Set in a world where horses, sword fights and sieges are the norm, magic can also be found – both good and bad magic. The locations are very visual and some of the minor characters drag your attention. For instance Kerstin the Witch of Kromm wields magic in an attempt to save the city. I could really feel the effort she was putting into her magic, and the fact she wasn’t really very nice came across wonderfully.

The two main characters – Hinkle and Sir Gilkrist were somewhat lacking in depth. Hinkle spent most of the time second guessing herself and bowing to the will of others. Even when she took control she didn’t really know what to do. Sir Gilkrist was a pompous idiot. He originally didn’t think it right to take Hinkle with him, but then used and abused her by ignoring her needs. He didn’t really seem to know what he was doing half the time and went against orders to do what he (wrongly) thought was best.

I believe if the two main characters had more depth to them this book would be a winner. It has all the right ingredients to make it a good read, but needs more work to take it to this level.
