A bog may be Earth’s undoing, but it will be a gift to Mars.

Digging up bog bodies and analyzing corpses are the last things archaeology graduate student Felicity Cratchett wants to do. And when unusual mummies are discovered in the subpolar region of Polar Bear Provincial Park, it’s the last place she wants to go. But since her faculty advisor insists that she log more hours in fieldwork, she has little choice. In a remote bog with a small team of scientists, Felicity unearths the greatest secret of our time—a secret with ties to ancient Rome, roots in Botswana, and a link to the first people to exercise abstract thought. This revelation will challenge the conventional theory of human origins and human evolution.

Meanwhile, astronaut Lucas Wilson, a man tormented with a deep-seated anger, is terraforming Mars. He reluctantly descends to the Red Planet’s surface with his fellow astronauts, preparing to direct their exploration. Mars, in its birth pangs, will challenge every step he takes, with gas explosions and raging rivers, with damaged fuel processors and limited oxygen supplies. In the midst of these disasters, Lucas must keep his companions from discovering a feat of genetic engineering that will transform Mars like nothing has in over a billion years. The double helix of this masterwork twists all the way back to Earth and Felicity’s mummies. But if he fails, Lucas must decide whether to take up Mars’s sword, or to cast the weapon into a bog.

Have you ever wondered what the future holds, yet still remain curious about the past?

In The Furies’ Bog, author Deborah Jackson takes the reader on an amazing journey with astronauts looking at the future colonization of Mars while at the same time taking the reader on a historical journey with a group of graduate archeology students. These are two lines of time that become intertwined with the fate of humanity and the fears of extinction looming in the distance.

Deborah Jackson’s writing style is crisp and lively with humor, emotion and the human condition written in each character and event that occurs. I especially enjoyed how she was able to make each character three-dimensional, each had a rich back story, strong emotions and just like everyday life, their own secrets and weaknesses.

Ms. Jackson does a wonderful and skilled job at describing the setting for both very different plotlines. Initially, it can be somewhat difficult to follow the two story lines as they play out, but soon enough the reader begins to see how the past research and events on Earth relate to the adventurous Mars colonization research. Deep treachery and greed soon enter the equation and both stories take tremendous sweeps and turns, bringing the reader on an amazing journey that is so deep that one feels immersed in the story itself.

The author is able to put the reader into the forefront of the action as each adventure has its own suspense, action and intrigue. Each unfolding event pulls the reader deeper and deeper into the mystery and by the time the final pages come forward, the story comes to a conclusion that does not leave the reader grasping for more, but in all honesty, very content with the finishing sequence of events.

This is one story that I will not soon forget and I implore you to look beyond the separation of past and future and look into what The Furies’ Bog holds for you! You will not be disappointed!

Love and remembrance

Precious memories that one never imagines could be lost have a way of fading over time, to a point when uncertain they were ever real, rendering them as ghosts in the machine. Yet reminders, both passionate and brutal tempt them back as cherished thoughts and at times nightmarish visions.

As their world once more spirals out of control to the ravages of war, Trevor and Victoria find themselves amidst a torrent of beautiful and painful moments relived. Foremost for them is the safety of their twenty-year-old son, Miles. The distress Victoria endures over his departure for school in Glasgow is further complicated when Trevor reveals a secret he has hidden from her for years.

Once more the question of “How far would one go to save the one they love?” is thrust upon them, with unforeseeable consequences. Has time run out for all … or will they survive with an unimaginable bequest of time?

Letting go isn’t an easy thing to do, but sometimes it’s completely necessary.

One of the things I’ve come to appreciate the most about Mr. Botzenhart’s writing style is how much attention he pays to the small details in his work. When he talked about how a character reacted to a specific piece of news, I could imagine exactly what that person looked and sounded like as they heard what was going on. There was just as much care taken with the settings as well. This makes his tales a lot of fun to read.

There were pacing issues in the beginning. The narrator spent a great deal of time reintroducing the characters and explaining what they’ve been up to since their last adventure. As much as I liked catching up with them, this did slow down the pacing of the plot quite a bit. It took me a while to get into the storyline because of this.

Trevor’s secret was handled nicely. I did have a pretty good guess about what it might be because of my familiarity with this series, but the author still sneaked in a few surprises about it for me along the way. What I liked the most about Trevor’s secret was seeing how it affected the rest of the plot. It fit the tone of this book really well. I can’t say much else about it without giving away spoilers, of course, but it was exactly the sort of thing I’d expect from this character.

This is the third instalment in the Out of Time series. While it can be read as a standalone story, there was some nice character development that only readers who are already familiar with the main characters will pick up on.

I’d recommend A Bequest of Time to anyone who loves steampunk science fiction.

The Pigeon a fantasy adventure story of courage and survival of the fittest.

To be or not to be, a pigeon? Judy, a veterinarian and Bobby, an undercover detective will be racing their beloved pigeons in a grueling and hazardous race, where they will encounter storms, cell towers, hunters, predatory falcons and pirates.

While preparing for the race they will be staying with David, whose ancestor attempted to create a transporter; a predecessor to those used in Star Trek for transporting people. Unfortunately, while attempting to try it on himself, a fly found its way into the transporter and during the transfer of atoms Andre’s head was transferred to the fly and vice versa, though he kept his mind. As a result he died and his story was later made into a film called, The Fly.

David, believing one’s man’s failure is another man’s success, he tries to convince Judy and Bobby to enter his transporter pods, so that they can temporarily become pigeons, with their heads, then fly with the thousand pigeons in the race; thereby documenting the race and all its obstacles for the benefit of the safety of all pigeons in future races. An opportunity that’s almost too hard to resist.

No one has ever seen this kind of race before, so nobody knows what to expect from it.

The dialogue was nicely done. I was intrigued by the fact that Judy and Bobby spoke so similarly to each other. There were other signs that they had a loving and happy marriage, but this was my first clue that they really enjoyed each other’s company. I liked the fact that Mr. Verola left small hints like these about what their life was like before they decided to temporarily become pigeons. It made the plot even more fun to read than it already was.

The narrator in this story spent a lot of time telling the audience what was happening instead of showing it to us. This was especially noticeable when it came to the characters’ personalities. For example, one of them was described as “likeable, but a little out there.” I was fascinated by that description. With that being said, I was also disappointed that I didn’t get to see some tangible examples of what a nice but also eccentric person would look like in this universe. It would have been helpful to have a few mental images of how that character would behave in certain situations.

My favourite part of this tale was the pigeon race itself. It was a dangerous and exciting experience for Bobby and Judy. There were a few times when I accidentally started holding my breath for a moment while waiting to find out if they’d survive the latest obstacle in their path. The stakes were high, and there was never any assurance that a human mind trying to operate a pigeon’s body would do well in that situation.

I’d recommend The Pigeon: Come Fly with Me to anyone who has wondered what it would be like to be a bird.

When she spots two winged creatures flying high above her in the Highlands of Scotland, she momentarily panics, thinking they’re the same beasts who murdered her family along with her entire clan. Realizing they’re gargoyles like her, she takes flight and discreetly follows them to an island.

Bryce, beta of his clan and drummer for the Knights of Stone, senses something is amiss on the Isle of Stone. At first, he believes he’s merely discomfited by the rumors of atrocities occurring in the Highlands. However, he discovers an intruder on the magically-concealed island home. Once he ascertains that the flame-haired beauty is the sole survivor of a traumatizing attack, he returns to the Highlands to warn his former clan.

Somewhere between cautioning the clan and realizing the necessity of destroying the beasts that threaten them all, Mairi and Bryce discover an attraction that quickly evolves into a consuming passion. A problem even greater than the murderous fiends becomes apparent – the love they share may not survive the battle.

Love finds Mairi just as her world is falling apart.

Mairi has just survived an attack from creatures straight out of her worst nightmares, but she’s smart and survived against the odds. After meeting Bryce and his brothers, she manages to secure their help in order to avenge the death of her clan. Mairi’s courage is amazing. Even after all the trauma she has suffered, she’s still determined to face the enemy and even plays a key part in drawing them out. Mairi does make an extremely rash decision in battle that puts her and Bryce in danger, but after all she’s been through, I can understand her emotions getting the best of her at such and intense moment.

Mairi and Bryce fall in love hard and fast. I must say that it takes a talented author to make this sort of thing work, and Ms. Carlisle has certainly pulled it off in this story. Mairi and Bryce have excellent chemistry and the sex scenes are scorching. I could easily picture them as a powerful couple and felt very secure in how their relationship was progressing until after the big battle when Bryce makes a decision that jeopardizes everything. It is easy to sit back and say that Bryce was being stupid, but whenI took a moment to think about Bryce’s past and the short amount of time he and Mairi had known each other, I could understand why he did it, even if I completely disagree with him. Will Bryce and Mairi’s romance survive his decision?

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Knights of Stone: Bryce. This tale is part of a series, but it stands alone very well. Ms. Carlisle explains any pertinent background information succinctly. I was never lost and the flow of the story was never interrupted. The pacing is great, and I was so wrapped up in their story that I read the entire book in one sitting. Marianne Harmon is sick and tired of being just the kid sister of the famous queen of Kwadra Island. Although she daydreams about being a warrior, when rebels bomb the royal ball she’s shunted to one of the many tunnels that honeycomb Kwadra, where she awaits a captain of the valiant Royal Guardians.

Quinn Lebatarde, a scam artist fleeing the police, dons the uniform of a Royal Guardian killed by a tunnel collapse. When Marianne mistakes him for her bodyguard, Quinn can’t decide whether to save the feisty maiden, fall in love with her—or kidnap her. With bloodthirsty rebels pursuing them and a treasure map in his pocket, what will he choose?

I really enjoyed this book and all the characters (especially Quinn.. the banter between him and Marianne had me giggling.) Even though this is the second book in the series, it can easily be read alone- although it did make me want to read the first book to find out more about the Kwadrans and how Marianne’s older sister, Elinor, became the Kwadran queen.

The characters are all fully drawn—they have their faults, but they grow over the course of the book. The chemistry between Marianne and Quinn is reminiscent of that between Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner in Romancing the Stone (not a coincidence that this movie is referenced in the book blurb!) The action was strong, and the hardships Quinn and Marianne go through on their journey plays a great part in their growth.

Mr. Hoornaert’s writing is clean and tight—it was a pleasure to read and I’m looking forward to reading more of his works.

Nala Vestria has lost her freighter, her crew and her father, only to become personal maid to a cyborg. Stag is surly, short-tempered, and completely untrusting of humans … not to mention intense, commanding, and maybe the hottest being Nala has ever seen. When she finds him temporarily at her mercy, Nala isn’t sure if she wants to kill him or kiss him. Then again, life is short. She opts for the latter.

Nala swiftly becomes a distraction Stag can’t afford, especially after he’s had a carnal taste of what the woman has to offer. He’ll take her back to Garden, his home planet, and be rid of her — as well as the emotions she evokes. But as their journey home becomes harrowing, Nala may prove to be more of an asset than a liability. To both the ship … and the lonely cyborg who commands her.

I am so flipping happy that Laurann Dohner has returned to her Cyborg Seduction Series! After a long hiatus, she gave us first Deviant and now Stag. It’s like she’s on fire with with this series, and I for one, couldn’t be any more pleased. This book was a page turner that had me involved from beginning to end.

This story was lively but for me it was the characters that really popped out. Stag was his same surly self that he was in Deviant’s book. I mean, he really did not like humans; not one bit. Ms. Dohner gave us a glimpse of why he felt that way, but for the most part, my feelings were torn between liking him and really needing to smack him or throw my Kindle or some other emotional outburst. I loved the story though and Nala too, and most of the other Cyborgs. Maze and Hellion really caught my interest and that’s because Laurann Dohner is so adept at giving each character, even the secondary ones, their own unique personality. I think this book would be the first time however that I’ve actually liked a secondary character more than the main one. I would really love to read Hellion’s story because he was more emotionally expressive than the rest of the Cyborgs. Like Deviant, he was considered flawed and that caught my attention. However, as smitten as I was with another Cyborg, it was Stag who put up such an entertaining fight in this one. Captain Surly Pants was downright mean at first but Nala went right back at him until he learned to trust her.

As usual, with Laurann Dohner, this book was well written. The plot was suspenseful with more twists than I had expected, the sex was scorching hot, and even some light humor thrown in there too. I loved it and can’t wait to read the next Cyborg Seduction story.

From the moment Geleon laid eyes on Jaelyn Areeda, he was determined to make her his. She could deny it, avoid it, even run from it, but there was no escaping destiny. Her essence called to his on a primordial level; it wouldn’t be denied. Despite her strange reactions around him, Geleon felt her attraction and smelled her arousal. But why did something so seemingly simple and straight forward have to be so difficult? He’d read the instructions and watched all the videos on how to talk to Earth women. He could fight monsters and best his fellow warriors in battle, but when it came to Jaelyn, he felt awkward and out of sorts. The last thing he wanted to do was scare her off and lose her forever so he settled on gaining her trust. Just when he thought he was making headway, she disappears.

Migraines and anxiety attacks plagued Jaelyn for years. She blamed it on mounting bills, limited income, and far too much responsibility. Little did she know her medical conditions were the result of something more elemental. The day Geleon walked into the restaurant she knew her heart was in danger. Overwhelmed by her attraction, her reaction to him summoned an onslaught of intense symptoms—none of which were pleasant. She both wanted him to return and wanted to stay away at the same time. After all, what man wanted a woman with all her problems? When a family emergency comes up, she uses it as an opportunity to escape. Her main priority is taking care of her grandmother. Despite her growing feelings for Geleon, she has to leave.

Book nine of Ms. Celeste Prater’s Fueled by Lust series, Geleon proved to be an equally enjoyable read as were books one through eight. In fact, there’s not a single book in the series that I wouldn’t recommend. One thing I noticed different about this installment is a feeling of clarity. I begin so see answers to questions I didn’t even realize I had. I had several “ah ha!” moments while reading. For me, anyway, I feel Ms. Prater really began to tie things together. Ideas and information on how things are and why things are began to take shape. The connection between Earth and Insedivertus clicked, as did my understanding of the Unfortunate One Hundred. Many ideas that Ms. Prater had skillfully planted in her previous installments really melded in this story. While this offered some closure on loose ends, it also opened up new worlds of possibilities, which I hope in turn means a lot more stories—a reader can only hope.

As with most of Ms. Prater’s stories, I was too engrossed to notice any editing errors or typos. If they were there, I was so captivated by the characters and plot that I didn’t notice. The only negative thing I can say about her books is that with each new installment, I find myself more jealous and envious of these women who are lucky enough to have snagged themselves an Insedi Warrior. Um, I’d like one too please, Ms. Prater, if you have an extra you can spare.

Aside from being a gorgeous and yummy hunk of man meat, Geleon is also very attentive to Jaelyn’s needs and is willing to do whatever he can to rectify the source of her pain and heartache. While he can be a bit hardheaded and narrow-minded on some things, he’s not a bull-in-a-China-shop as some of the other Insedi guys are, and he’s open to seeing others’ points of view after he’s able to mull it over a bit.

Jaelyn’s true character really begins to shine after she’s reunited with Geleon and she sees the length he’s willing to go to in order to help her. At first, she accepts his aid because she has no other option, but it doesn’t take long before she realizes the depth of his devotion and the truth of his declarations of affection for her. As the truth of their connection begins to unfold, Jaelyn realizes their meeting wasn’t merely chance; it was fate. Who is she to argue? Especially when it comes in such a wonderful package.

I can’t recommend Ms. Prater’s stories enough. Her characters are so well thought out and multidimensional; no cookie cutter people here. With each one, she manages to introduce new internal and external struggles, as well as progress the reader’s depth and understanding of Insedivertus and the wonderful warriors who reside there. If you love alpha aliens with big hearts, interplanetary travel, and not-so-helpless females that just need a good man in their life, then Fueled by Lust: Geleon is right for you. Check it out; you won’t be disappointed.

A human female claiming to have been reared at Mercile has demanded entry to Homeland. Hero rushes to Medical and comes face-to-face with his past. One look at Candi and the life he’s built since gaining freedom comes crashing down around him.

Laurann Dohner took her amazing New Species series in a new direction with this book. Instead of one long story this book has two short ones that were absolutely fantastic. Both short stories were brilliantly written to pull at the reader’s emotions and surely have them hanging on every word.

Now truth be told I didn’t remember much about Mourn from the previous books but that didn’t matter. His story broke my heart. Mourn was the first truly broken New Species in this series. He just couldn’t get over losing his mate. He wanted out of his misery even if he had to push someone else into doing him the favor. Then Dana showed up and she was basically in about the same state of despair after losing her husband. Their suffereing drew them together but they formed a strong bond that was believable. Laurann Dohner pulled at my heartstrings with this one.

The second story was Hero (927) and I remembered all about him from Valiant’s book. He was the canine New Species who protected Tammy until the calvary got there to save them. This story was just as profound and touching. It was also my favorite of the two because I really loved Candi. She had been through pure hell and was still a fighter even when she had to push her mate.

 “I love you, my pup.”

This story definitely had the most unique spin of all the New Species books. Hero and Candi tugged at my heart because, out of all the couples, they were truly meant to be together. That infused the story with a heady sense of romanticism. Of course, both stories were sinfully hot. Hello! This was Laurann Dohner at her finest.

There were so many reasons to love this book. I simply felt that both short stories were beautifully done. They captured my attention and didn’t let go for a second. I can’t wait for the next New Species book to be written.

Drum, the hero of this tale, was exactly what I expected him to be. It was amusing to see how he described everything and everyone around him. His personality was so strong and unique that I got to know him well pretty early on in the plot. In fact, I knew precisely what he was all about within a paragraph or two. I also thought that this character matched the person he was based on perfectly.

This story spent a lot of time focusing on the supporting characters instead of on the main ones. As much as I enjoyed reading about them, I would have preferred to get to know the main characters better than I did. There was a lot of stuff about them that was only mentioned briefly because of how much effort the narrator put into describing everyone else around them instead.

The dialogue was handled nicely. I liked watching the various characters talk to each other because of how many humorous references to other things they slipped into their conversations. Picking up on all of the clues became a game that I played in my mind as I read. It was rewarding to spot them as early as possible. This is the kind of tongue-in-cheek storytelling that I find entertaining.

I enjoyed this short, sweet and fun Sci-Fi story.

I don’t normally read this genre but lately I’ve been genuinely enjoying this particular series. I loved the main characters in this story. They had great chemistry. Cosmir and Caitlyn felt the sparks from the first moment her brother introduced them, but then the romance was delayed when the sexy purple alien discovered that he’s an instant father from a long ago one night stand. I liked that right away Cosmir was so devoted to taking responsibility for his daughter and how the author let me know that he was concerned about Katy’s feelings. Later on Cosmir and Caitlyn were able to reconnect when he saves her from a fire.

This short story was sexy and entertaining. The author did a great job in bringing the characters to life and providing a bit of conflict to their relationship. They loved each other, and their little family with Katy, but there were some issues and compromises. I liked how the author involved some characters from the previous books, as well. Another aspect that I like about this story/series is how descriptive it is which helps to put a picture in my mind. It’s really great and I hope there will be more books for me to enjoy.
