The plot is definitely interesting and unpredictable, yet it is Janie, Benjamin, and Pip who drive the story. The three friends search the world to find each other… well, the search actually starts sooner than that. Janie searches her mind for memories of three missing weeks. Her search allows us readers to get a sense of that first novel, and works as something of a prologue. I might wish this bit had been a bit shorter.

This is also a good illustration of how wonderfully Meloy builds characters: Janie’s roommate Opal’s family are as real as any of the main characters, in the space of a paragraph. And the very first of the surprises happens so quickly after we disregard both Opal AND her parents… that I am immediately shocked and then mad and intrigued. However, I must tell you that I absolutely hate spoilers, and that makes writing a review for this (that anyone can comprehend, anyway) darn near impossible. Just as we begin to think we can see where this is going, we realize we cannot see at all.

This book is getting a 5 star review because the plot is magically plotted – and as I read on, I can only tell you that further events are both logical and suprising, that magic is a delight – and friendship, true friendship, never lets you down.

The writer’s style: Polished professionalism. This story is completely engrossing, and the writing fades to the background – it is simply never intrusive. The classic ‘good read.’ In fact, from cover to layout, everything about The Apprentices is top quality. If you like a true spellbinder, do read.

Partly because the author did a good job making her come across as the spoiled off spring of a rich man, which is exactly what she is. In a way you don’t want her to end up with the sexy Flynn but half way through the book you get the sense that these two are a match made in heaven.

The two things I loved most about this story were the locales that the authors described perfectly and I found myself feeling like I was really in London and Scotland. The second, the humor and sometimes witty dialogue, especially between Summer and Flynn.

This is the second book I’ve read by Evie Hunter and I think the author’s carved out her own niche of what I’d call erotic chick-lit. And if that’s your pleasure then I think this story and her previous one will be definite musts on your summer reading list.

Readers will see the ending of some story threads, the beginning of something else and a final ultimate conclusion to something that I’d thought was already resolved. Imagine my horrified fascination to find out there was yet one more diabolical twist that Sookie needed to face. I never, ever saw that coming. Neither did Sookie. There was more drama, suspense and nail-biting paragraphs than ever and the writing kept me spellbound.

I can’t say who she ends up with. About four books back, I started thinking it would be a good match up after all but it never seemed to build enough for me to be sure. In this final book, I’d have to settle for a happily for now because with Sookie Stackhouse, one just never knows. I mean look what happens in this book! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Ms. Harris is devious. She has never shied away from having her characters make hard choices and this author stayed true to form. I’ve read about many readers being unhappy. I’m not one of them. Yes, I’m sad because I have been following this series from the very first and there was something magical and different about the author’s writing and imagination that simply captured my interest – and never let go. I’m gloomy because it’s over. However, after reading this book and the way it ended, though no less exciting and suspenseful as those in the past, it absolutely fit. Ms. Harris tied up the loose ends the way they had to be done to keep her characters’ integrity. They were who they were and anything different would have been unnatural. It amazes me how she kept everything so together.

Are there questions left hanging? Yes – little ones. Case in point, Sookie’s nephew. Perhaps years down the line, Ms. Harris will grant readers with another visit to Bon Temps, with a visit from Aunt Sookie. Maybe it could be a holiday story or something to give us a definitive, final, sink-your-teeth-in-firmly type tale for those readers who need that extra assurance. As for me, I’m good. I accept this ending as the way it should be, Sookie Style.

Dead Ever After is hard-hitting, powerful and at times, astonishing. Yet, Ms. Harris balanced it all with a bit of humor, with writing that touched my emotions and had an ending that left me with a wistful Mona Lisa smile. I say a fond fare thee well to Bill, Eric, Alcide, Pam, Tara, Sam, Jason, Hunter, Michele and Mustpha Khan, Niall, Mr. C, Diantha and the unforgettable Quinn. My sniffles and heaviest sighs go to Sookie, a unique and special character that truly is a literary gem in the paranormal romance genre. Thank you Ms. Harris for a series that took me away to a place I’d never been before. This final book is a keeper.

Even the few people she comes to depend and care on seem to present their own challenge. This made me really root for her on many different levels.

I was not given the privilege of reading the first installment of the Immortal City series, but I will make sure that I read any books after this one. The story was written in a way that was entertaining to all age’s which is always great for me since I like to read stories with my child. We  were  both immediately hooked on Maddy and her tale. While I did not read the first story, I appreciated that I did not feel lost or confused by the second even though it follows the same main character and storyline.

While angels are clearly a large factor in this story, there is not a lot of religious talk. Angels are almost treated like any other supernatural creatures like shifters and vampires. They are just enhanced creatures.  The angels’ position was based more about enhancing human life instead of focusing on religious beliefs.

This complex yet readable novel was truly entertaining and it captured my attention and held it for long periods of time. I can’t imagine anyone not finding as riveting as I did. I even found myself thinking about the characters long after the last page was read. That is why I would proudly recommend this story.

But there is a lot of sexual contact that might not be for a younger teen. There is a lot of emotional distress in this book that a younger reader might not understand, either. But don’t let that deter you! This book definitely packs a punch.

The push and pull between Natalie and Ash is interesting. I could identify with both characters. She wants to protect him and he refuses to sacrifice her. Intense reading. I got a little irritated with them after a while because I wanted them to just work things out, but come on! This is fiction and well, everything can’t go smoothly.

If you want a book that’s rife with emotion and struggle as well as some hot love, then this might be the book for you.

Even when everyone around him swears he’s evil incarnate, he doesn’t let it get him down. He just accepts it – for better or for worse – and continues to do what he needs to survive.

Anna Leighton, on the other hand, starts out as just another spoiled rich girl slumming it at her parent’s ancestral home on the island. However, her character probably has the most growth over the course of the novel. She evolves from a rather self-centered and self-absorbed teen and becomes a selfless, loving woman. There were moments where I didn’t like Anna very much, but she always managed to redeem herself later.

Ashes on the Waves is a beautiful and haunting retelling of one of my favorite Poe poems, “Annabel Lee”. The author did an amazing job translating the darkness and strength of the narrator’s love for Annabel Lee into a gripping novel. Although the ending left me feeling a bit cheated, every page leading up to that point was pure enjoyment. A very enjoyable, if heartbreaking novel, Ashes on the Waves was nothing like I’d expected, but everything I had hoped it could be.

Not believing that an expert chef would die from a grease fire, she sets about looking for Digger’s killer. But things get sticky when the tragedy brings Josh back to Boston-and back into Chloe’s life.

Jealousy, bad food, good food and a lot of frazzled nerves weave their way around the mystery of who cooked the cook. I never realized chefs led such frenetic and dangerous lives until I opened up Cook the Books and discovered how different restaurant kitchen life can be.

This is a mystery series that’s ongoing but this is my first time tasting the adventure. I didn’t feel too lost because the author provided just enough back story for a new reader to understand that there’s some serious water under the bridge between the main female protagonist, Chloe, and a man who, for a bit of the story, is in the background, Josh. I can’t label him a hero because he’s not the focus, he’s more like a side kick with romantic overtones. His character does stir the pot a bit and shakes things up so a reader can see Chloe in action.

Chloe is the eye of the storm and the winds of chaos seem to swirl about her character. The ambiance of the food world never abates and is a solid and steady theme throughout the book. The premise of finding a job to support a bad habit is believable, and having so much responsibility heaped upon one person’s shoulders is a breakdown waiting to happen. Good thing the heroine has a few good friends and some seriously effective distractions to keep her mind occupied. Unfortunately, they’re not the good kind.

The mystery is who killed one of her chef acquaintances. I don’t believe he was a true friend but he was a person in her circle who perhaps readers might have met in previous books in the series. It was interesting how the search for clues was handled. I wasn’t flooded with a lot of misdirection and red herrings. It was left to my finding out important clues when Chloe got them which made a lot of sense since this story is told in first person point of view. If the heroine didn’t get it, neither did I, until the author wanted us to.

The romantic elements are there so it adds a little spice and lightness to the dark drama and suspense of finding their friend’s killer.

Cook the Books is an entertaining, light and zippy mystery with a lot of character. Most of the book is about Chloe and how she starts off doing something so basic and innocent and how it ends up spinning out of control onto a path totally unforeseen. Readers are teased with all these great sounding food dishes but the authors have guaranteed that our taste buds will join in on the fun by giving us the actual recipes so we can experience our own gastronomic adventures. I liked Chloe’s friends and found the fact that she’s still learning about herself interesting. The writing was good, the pace steady and the dialogue was insightful into the characters.

All in all Cook the Books is a fun read and it makes a person wonder just what is it going to take to iron out the relationship between Josh and Chloe. Guess I’ll have to read the next book and find out what new mayhem dogs the heroine’s steps. Should be good!

This is the first Richelle Mead, Vampire Academy book I’ve read, but it won’t be the last. The characters in this story are compelling and grabbed my attention from the first page. The plot is complex yet easy to follow and it kept me on my toes.

There is a wry humor to the story as well. I loved Rose. Miranda is an interesting heroine, but I have to admit, I liked her best friends Charlotte aka Charlie and Finn. I loved their interactions—no matter what, they disagree, but the romantic undercurrent is always there. Their arguments kept me in stitches during some of the parts of the book that otherwise took me out of the story.

Yes, there were some predictable parts and a few that dragged a tad, but nothing too drastic that ruined the story. I enjoyed reading and liked the contrast between Miranda and her step sister. I liked seeing how evil isn’t always in the form expected and surprises do happen to good people. But if I go into more detail, well that would give away the ending!
