I’m a sucker for the work of Stephen King. I see a new book and have to have it. When I saw Elevation was coming out, I jumped. The writing flows well. Once I started the book, I had to finish. There was no putting it down and walking away for me. The characters drew me in and I wanted to know what would happen next.

I have to admit I thought the plot, a man losing weight mysteriously, was a tad tired on King’s part. But this take on the trope is fresh. I liked how the author infused bits and pieces of the world right now, too. It felt relevant to what the world is at this moment.

I didn’t like Scott at first. He came across crotchety. But as the story unfolded, I came around to him. Actually, I came around to the rest of the characters. They’re relatable. They’re human. I loved it.

This is a shorter story for King. Keep that in mind. But while it’s short on pages, it’s got a good, solid story. It’s worth the hour or so to read it. If you’re interested in something fresh and contemporary, but still from the mind of Stephen King, then this might be the story you’re looking for.

I’d never read a book by Melody Carlson before this one and I’m glad I did pick this one up. First off, there are cats. Second, there’s a bit of romance. So those had me hooked. It’s got sweet moments, it’s Christmas…what can you say?
I didn’t expect an incredibly deep story. I wanted a nice Christmas tale for a cold evening. This one didn’t disappoint in that respect–it’s a nice book.

If you’re a cat person…there are moments I wasn’t thrilled with the hero. He’s supposed to home the cats his grandmother had and he’s allergic…or is he? I got he wanted to start fresh since he’d just come home from Uganda, but his intentions for getting rid of the cats seemed a tad heartless. I would’ve thought he’d be more concerned about the felines because they were his grandmother’s, rather than so eager to get rid of them.

But I did enjoy the tinge of romance and the holiday spirit in the book.

I’m not a big one on thriller books. I tend to gravitate toward the feel good kinds, but this one was selected by the book club, so I read it. The writing is interesting. I won’t lie. I was hooked from the beginning because I wanted to know what would happen next. It dragged me in.

I do have to admit, Vanessa and Nellie did confuse me. I liked the twists that involved them, but there were times when I did have to scratch my head and reread. I tried to keep things straight, but sometimes didn’t. I did manage to finish the book and I have to say I sighed a little. Like…whew… okay, we found the end.

That said, there were moments where the plot is quite complicated. Holy moly. Keeping things straight could be tough. But the plot kept me reading. I’m not sure this would have been a book I’d have picked up on my own, but that doesn’t mean it might not be the one for you.

If you’re looking for a book that will mess with your head, will rivet you and will make you think twice about the folks you see around you, then this might be the book for you.

My best friend, my saving grace…my surrogate?

I’ve never read a book by Kothari, so this was a new-to-me author. I like finding books that are genuine and original. This was one of those books. The writing is fast-paced and I couldn’t put the book down.

That said, the characters were…interesting. I’m not sure if I liked them or hated them. Maybe a bit of both. Paris could be incredibly whiny and full of herself, but I understood why–she has to be forceful in the courtroom and when she’s out of it, then she can lose control. She’s relateable, but yet, I still wasn’t a fan. I kept thinking, someone give her a reality check. But, you see, I was emotionally invested. So, kudos to the author.

Then there’s Neal, Paris’s husband. He’s a piece of work. He’s a playboy and knows it. I wasn’t sure he really wanted kids, but that was okay. I wasn’t a fan of his, either.

Now there’s Naira. She’s Paris’s best friend. I get it. I’ve had best friends who seemed to have it all and it can be tough to watch. When Paris doesn’t want to get pregnant, she has Naira step in. Good in theory, but questionable in real life. I got the ups and downs Naira dealt with when pregnant. It’s a rollercoaster. Then she’s close-ish to Neal. She’s trying to be a good friend and there were times when I don’t know how she kept going. She had to be my favorite character.
I understood the jealousy by Paris, but there were times when I wanted more from Paris. I wanted to be shown her anguish and explained why more often, not told.

If you want a book that’s full of drama and shows the true bonds of friendship, then this might be the book for you. Give it a try.

Paxton and Lauren are great characters. Fully-fleshed and fun, they show the magic of the holiday throughout the story. I loved the doctor in the country storyline. Susan Carlisle writes the plotline, which could be trite, in a fresh perspective.

Paxton is out of his element. He’s in a small town, with no traffic lights, is snowed in and has to help care for a child. I liked how he dealt with each hurdle. He was very real to me. Then there’s Lauren. She’s no-nonsense. She knows what she wants and isn’t always ready to grab it (him) because she’s got to concentrate on her son. I liked how they were both realistic. I fell for both characters and wanted to see them not only have a great Christmas, but a happy ending, too.

If you’re looking for a sweet read that’s sure to heat up the holidays or the chilly winter nights, then this might be the one you’re looking for. Recommended.

This was my second Debbie Macomber book and I have to admit, the pups on the cover snagged my attention. I was looking for a sweet holiday read…with dogs. I wasn’t let down.

I knew going into this book, it was going to be a feel-good read. That’s what I wanted. Yes, there are complications. Yes, there’s drama. But it’s manageable. It’s the kind of book that is an easy read, quick one at that, and worth the investment of time.

Josie and Palmer aren’t perfect characters–which is good. I don’t want perfect. I have to admit, Palmer was a tad on the lovelorn side. He wanted Josie so much. I rooted for him, but at times, he was a bit over the top in his desire. It’s a sweet read, but he could be…he reminded me of a pup at times. Josie isn’t perfect as I said. She’s dying to get back to her job in Seattle. I got it. She had something she loved back home. But she loves Palmer. I liked the missed connections in the story, but I did want the action to pick up.

That said, the ending was satisfying for me. I knew what I’d be getting and wasn’t let down. It’s a sweet morsel of a book. It fit the mood and the desire I had for a holiday read.

I picked up this book on a lark. I saw the title and decided it might be a good story to read on a chilly winter evening. I’m glad I did. The writing flowed well and once I started the book, I couldn’t put it down. I needed to know more. The fact I came in partway through the series didn’t hamper my enjoyment of the book. I felt like I’d known the characters all along and wasn’t lost. That’s kudos to the author for keeping the story fresh and the characters vivid enough that I wasn’t lost.

I liked Deanna immediately. She’s interesting and snappy. She knows what she’s doing with those spirits and even when she’s not sure what’s going on, she’s on top of things. I liked her forthright approach. I also liked her vulnerability with her boyfriend, Paul. She’s a well-rounded character. Then there’s the cast of characters that round out the story. Yes, there are a lot of characters, but it wasn’t hard to keep them sorted out. I liked the variety.

The mystery aspect of the story was great. There were twists and turns I didn’t see coming. The subplot is fascinating and more than a little scary. I needed to know how the story would turn out and what would happen next. Like I said above, I couldn’t put this book down.

If you want a book that’s sure to please, with a twist of mystery and lots of paranormal excitement, then this might be the book for you.

Missy is feisty, as described in the blurb. The woman knows what she wants and what she doesn’t. I liked her forthright approach. It was refreshing to read about an older heroine (over 25 yrs old) who had her head screwed on straight. I loved Missy immediately. Then there’s Don. This man… wow. I could see him and I would love to see him on the big screen. He’s sad, but sweet, a painter and the brooding… I was sucked right in. The chemistry between Don and Missy is fun, but tender, too. Oh and the cat. I loved Lady. She’s a pistol.

The cast of characters is wonderful and even though I hadn’t read the other books in the Barefoot Bay world, I didn’t feel lost. Great reading.

If you’re looking for a warm holiday read that’s perfectly quick, but just right, then this might be the one for you.

I’ve never read a Debbie Macomber book and I’m glad I picked this one up. I have to admit, I grabbed it because of the dog on the cover. I’m a sucker for dog stories. This one ticked that box for me.

The writing flowed well and it was hard to put this book down–I had to. I couldn’t stay up late enough to finish it. That said, some of the subplot was a tad odd… I really had to stretch to go along with it. But I can’t say it was enough to turn me off. The bit about the biker… Well, you’ll have to read it for yourself to make a decision.

Ashley and Dashiell (Ash and Dash lol) were an interesting pairing. They seemed to have little in common and the romance happened a bit on the quick side, but with the dash of Christmas tossed in, it was a satisfying quick read.

If you want a book that’s cozy for the holidays, then this might be the one for you.

A heartwarming Christmas tale.

I wanted a sweet, quick read for Christmas and this book ticked all my boxes. It’s cute and wonderful. Fannie Flagg knows how to tell a story. I was engaged with the characters and wanted the book to keep going.

I loved the idea of Oswald wanting to go home to be comfortable since he had little time left. If I were going somewhere to just be, then go to Lost River. It’s full of characters and quirkiness. The plot is simple and embodies the spirit of the season. I couldn’t put it down.

If you’re looking for a book that’s a comfort read and will work for an hour or two, then this is the book you want.
