This is the second book written by Joe Ide and it picks up basically immediately after the first (“IQ”) leaves off. While I feel readers could pick this story up as a stand-alone novel since the author does a good job of fully explaining what is happening in Isaiah’s life and why he makes the choices he does, a part of me definitely feels the story was better for having read IQ first and knowing a lot of Isiah’s history and motivations.

I really enjoyed this story. Isaiah is a different character to many I read, fairly young and while incredibly smart still flawed enough to make youthful mistakes and not able to foresee everything like he thinks he can. It’s a great dynamic – particularly when it comes to repercussions (some of which he has to face from the first book which I also loved) and showing that being incredibly intelligent isn’t always an answer or solution for all problems.

My only real problem with this book was the time-line jumping around a fair bit. While this admittedly also occurred in the first story (IQ) I felt that was better integrated and didn’t leave me feeling so confused at times. Here, I felt the author could have done a bit of a better job highlighting where the story was being recalled from past interactions and which bit continued the current time-line. At points in the book I was quite confused as to when something was actually occurring in the time of the story itself.

That said, this book also had a great feel of realism to it for me. The world isn’t a perfect place and answers aren’t always there to be found. I thought the plotlines wove really well together in this story – between the various cases and characters Isaiah was interacting with and this helped to my mind in keeping the pace of the story moving quickly.

Readers who like a strongly plotted mystery story with a bit of action/adventure and a whole slew of realistic but different characters should definitely give this series a try. I’ve really enjoyed both the first story and this second book and I plan to purchase the rest of the series and continue along with it.

But when later Devin and Justin meet again at the club Justin is no longer in his uniform and the two men don’t have to keep their exchange brief and professional any longer.

I really enjoyed the writing style of this short and sexy story. I felt a connection to Devin straight away – pleased that the opening scene of being pulled over and really nervous about it was something so utterly relatable. It helped really set the mood for me but also let me feel a good empathy and connection with Devin’s character. I was jolted out of the story a few times by some typos/editing errors near the start of the book, but overall I really enjoyed Devin’s story.

I loved how even though he could be brave and confidant as Miss Teaque (his drag queen alter ego) Devin also was still the somewhat shy young guy inside who let himself be bullied around by his mother. This contrast was part of what made Devin so realistic and enjoyable to me. Devin is still trying to sort himself out and find his way and watching him blossom was really lovely. I found the plotline surrounding Devin’s mother a little cliched – but this in no way detracted from my enjoyment of the story as Devin and Justin’s connection – and Devin’s relationship with his brother – together more than made up for this.

I particularly loved how Devin and Justin took some time to get to know each other outside of the bedroom before they became physically intimate. While the sex was a little kinky and super hot when they got there, the connection between Devin and Justin felt deeper and more realistic for them actually trying to get to know each other first and not just having sex as soon as they connected. This really helped sell me on the potential longevity of their relationship and left me with a really good feeling about them both.

Sexy, light and fun this is a good short story.

Feeling an immediate connection, Marcus offers Kody not only his freedom, but protection in Marcus’ own group of friends that has formed their own pack together. Kody is nervous but willing to trust Marcus. Can they make something together?

I enjoyed this fast-paced short story. While I understand the author hurrying the plotline along because of the short length of the story, I would have appreciated Marcus and Kody’s relationship having a little bit more time to develop. I was very grateful they didn’t jump immediately into bed together – Kody absolutely wasn’t ready for physical intimacy after being held captive – but with a few interweaving plotlines I was left feeling as if the whole story was just rushed a little too much.

I guessed much of the plot between Kody’s abusers and one of Marcus’ family members and felt it was a little bit cliched. Again, with such a short page-count there wasn’t a huge amount of time for the author to really delve into a heavy plot or a complicated series of events, but I feel perhaps if one of the plotlines had been cut this might have made room to better flesh out (and finish) the remaining plot and still devote a decent amount of space to Kody and Marcus starting their new relationship.

I was surprised, though, that the author left some of the plot dangling unresolved, which really surprised me. Readers looking for an intricate or freshly different storyline won’t find that here and while Marcus and Kody’s relationship is completed and solidified, not all of the plot has that satisfying feeling of being finished. I did, however, enjoy Marcus and Kody’s characters and the small family Marcus had built from various friends, family and others. The characters really shine in this story and I thoroughly enjoyed them.

A fun and easy paranormal short story, this was a good, quick read.

Pack Rules by Julia Talbot and BA Tortuga

Werewolf Van and Vampire Mik have a past – and a complicated one at that. Despite that they both realise they need to relearn how to work together or lose possibly everything. Can they repair what was broken between them?

I enjoyed this steamy and fast-paced short story. While Mik and Van have quite a history the chemistry and desire is still really strong between them. I was pleased the reason for their breaking up was believable – this wasn’t just some miscommunication or silly misunderstanding – but a genuine problem the two had to discuss and work through. While the sex and reconnecting between Mik and Van takes up a large portion of the story between them I felt there was enough time also devoted to them working through their issues and rebuilding the trust and foundation of their relationship.

Rian is a yoga instructor and a city wolf through and through. He’s eager to give the remote resort and all the freedoms entailed there a good try, but what will happen when a far more wild and instinctive local sets him in their sight?

I really enjoyed this story between Rian and Gilead. Rian was just an adorable character – bouncy and young and just so fresh and lovely it was impossible to not adore him immediately. I found Gilead’s character to be a little more mysterious and it was intriguing to watch his personality and secrets slowly blossom open. It took me a little time to come on board and see the two very different men as being compatible, but their chemistry and connection was completely undeniable.

The Bear Facts by Sean Michael

Nuk has been eagerly anticipating the opening of Cereus and is thrilled that time has finally come. One of the first clients, Nuk is blown away by Al, the IT guy. Will their attraction blossom into something more lasting or is this just a fleeting moment in time?

I’ve never read a polar-bear shifter story so this one was completely fresh and different to me. I really loved how Al was such good friends with Daniel – the dragon shifter and owner of the resort land. I felt that added a lovely extra element to this story. Super hot and sexy this was a lovely short story and I really enjoyed Al’s character in particular and how he and Nuk needed to find common ground between them despite their vast differences. It was lovely to see them both compromise and meet each other half way as they feel deeper in love and forged a delightful relationship.

These three short stories stood very well alone and I enjoyed how clearly collaboration between the authors had occurred since there were small cameos from other characters across the stories. Readers who have read previous installments in this world will also likely enjoy seeing snippets of other characters and it helps make the resort and world feel really well built and far richer for it. That said, readers who haven’t read anything previous to this shouldn’t feel put off – these stories and characters absolutely stand alone and can be read with nothing else prior being known.

A good, solid set of three steamy and erotic stories that I really enjoyed.

I’ve not read many “end of the world” or “plague” type thrillers in the last eighteen months or so for the simple reason it feels rather like we’re currently living on one of those stories and I’m feeling pretty weary of it all. But I kept on seeing good reviews for this novel and it’s in a bunch of the stores lately so I finally caved in and bought a copy because I usually really enjoy them. I’m pleased I did because this was a good story – even if many factors of it hit rather close to home right now.

Considering this book was written before Covid-19 was a reality – let alone in pretty much every major headline worldwide – I feel the author did a remarkable job, both with his research but also with a pretty fair guess as to how a lot of the politics and medical bodies worldwide would react. A major factor in my enjoyment of this story was also that even though the book is quite political and medical focused – as you would expect in a plague type of mystery-thriller story – I feel all the major characters were highly relatable. The author has a really good and relaxed style of voice and writing and this made many of the characters really enjoyable to me, I could easily empathize with them and the situation they found themselves in and even some of the smaller characters, like Bambang, who were from a different culture, a different religion and a completely different walk of life, the author showcased Bambang in such a way I could not just see where his choices and actions came from, but why he made these decisions and I could easily relate to him despite our lives being completely different. It was a lovely feeling and really got me hooked into the story.

I admit I found the start of the story (maybe the first quarter of it or less) was a little slow moving. I strongly feel readers should stick with it though because there are a number of different, complex working parts to this story (different medical facilities, different parts of the world that are extremely important and different government/political regimes) that all need to be lined up, explained and laid out in order for the reader to fully grasp how all the dominoes fall once the virus gets out of control. Understandably there are a number of different things that all happen in tandem that need to be followed and having it all lined up correctly in the beginning is crucial. So while a part of me could see the pandemic begin to flourish and I wanted to go faster and faster the author did an excellent job really getting everything outlined clearly and all the characters introduced and ready for the explosion to occur.

In many respects this is simply a really well written pandemic story but in the current circumstances I find my enjoyment and tolerance for these stories fairly short. So the fact I really enjoyed this is testament to how well it’s written and how gripping I found the tale. Better still there is a solid “wrap up” and explanation at the end and while it was a bit of a twist (and dealt with very quickly) I was pleased that those loose ties were indeed wrapped up and we weren’t left hanging not really knowing how the outbreak happened. I’m not sure all readers will be as pleased as I was with the ending – and while I didn’t guess it, I would expect some readers probably will, but it was nice to not have dangling threads of plot and wondering for a while after I’d finished the book.

A solid and enjoyable read and one I will likely come back to another time.

Even though ten years has passed since a car accident killed Steven’s lover Andy, Steven hasn’t really moved on. He’s left his art behind and – just like his family wanted – joined in with the family business, but Steven remains alone, still mourning his lost lover. Only a chance encounter in a bar throws both Steven – and Andy’s – lives upside down, as Andy thought Steven had abandoned him, and Steven genuinely believed Andy had died. Can these two men rebuild their shattered lives and find a new way forward?

I found this to be a really emotional but strongly written short story. While the angst of Steven finding out his lover, Andy, wasn’t dead but he’d been betrayed into thinking so and mourning for a very long time is a lot to read I was pleased the author hammered all that out pretty much at the beginning of the story. There’s a lot of emotions and hurt for Andy and Steven both to come to grips with and I feel this could have really dragged the story as a whole down. I was so pleased when that wasn’t the case. Yes, there’s a lot of emotion and some angst and a few hurt and angry words, but this part of the story wasn’t extended longer than it needed to be and I feel it was really well handled – enough to be realistic and relatable, but not enough to be overly dramatic or feel like it was dwelled on.

I was grateful when Andy and Steven began to rebuild their relationship together. They both certainly still have scars and there’s a lot of work needed to be done, but it was clear they still deeply cared for each other and them both trying again was a lovely thing to read. I feel readers who enjoy this style of story will find it a quick and wonderful read, full of quite deep emotions and with two interesting, modern and very well drawn characters.

Steamy and wonderful, this was a lovely read and one I’ll enjoy again in the future.

What happens when a besieged and rather small dragon comes to a vampire and says, “I need your help”? Or when that vampire comes to a werewolf and says, “I have a job for you”? The vampire goes and builds a resort for things that go bump in the night, deep in the Cascade Mountains. Riding the wave of Julia Talbot’s Bloodrose series, the multi-author Cereus: The Building features paranormal romance Sean Michael, Julia Talbot and BA Tortuga.

Julia Talbot’s It’s Elemental features construction contractor Chayton, a werewolf who thinks demon decorator Kenny is a little fussy, and a lot hot. They argue about everything from feng shui to sex. Will they be able to resolve their differences?

The Third Course, by BA Tortuga, tells the story of Marco and Stephan, werecats, pridemates, and chefs who meet their match in head-bartender, Faelan, who just happens to be a growly, sexy Top.

Finally, Sean Michael’s Smoke and Gold follows the head dominant of the club, Zee, who’s dealing with trying to get his playrooms just so and trying to figure out maddening dragon, Daniel, at the same time. Who can resist loving a dragon?

While this book is comprised of three separate novellas it’s quite clear the authors collaborated closely on their work. Woven into their individual stories were small snippets and cameo’s of the main characters from the other stories and so while definitely separate stories there was a cohesion and smoothness to the book as a whole that I really loved.

Readers looking for a slightly different, more complicated series of stories featuring a whole bunch of various paranormal characters in an interesting setting should find this book excellent value (three for the price of one!) and an engrossing read, just like I did.

It’s Elemental by Julia Talbot

Werewolf Chayton is approached by his friend and offered the construction job of building a very special resort specially catered to all the various paranormal creatures that could just a very private and luxurious getaway. But the Demon decorator, Kenny, is quite particular about all manner of things and the sparks fly between Kenny and Chayton.

I was a little nervous about this story at first – I often find stories where the conflict and tension mainly revolves around the two main characters butting heads really struggles to balance the sexual chemistry and attraction with the arguments and differences of opinions. I couldn’t have been more wrong in the case of this story. I adored how while Chayton and Kenny were both very strong characters and exceptional at their own work, they were both secure enough in themselves to at least listen – and usually compromise and meet each other part way. I thought the author did an amazing job balancing having some conflict and sparks between Chayton and Kenny and still unfold a believable and sizzling hot sexual chemistry between the two.

The capsules also soft viagra increase testosterone levels in the body which causes testosterone to turn into a different hormone called DHT.
I also really enjoyed the smooth, easy banter between Chayton and Kenny. While it was clear from the start they were two different characters there was a sort of curiosity and open-mindedness between them both that just naturally led (in my opinion) to them wanting to know more, explore deeper, about each other. From there along with the zing of attraction between the two men it was only a short hop into bed and the development of a far deeper and more lasting relationship. I found this entire story fun and engrossing from start to finish and I was hooked from about the second page in. An awesome way to start this book and, I hope, the series.

The Third Course by BA Tortuga

Marco and Stephen are chefs – and both werecats in the same pride. They both find themselves drawn to head bartender Faelan who is a very growly and sexy Top.

I was utterly delighted by how much I enjoyed the banter between Marco and Stephen. All too often I find the troublesome type of behaviour to come across to me as bratty and annoying, but Marco and Stephen so obviously cared deeply for each other and there was always just that hint of laughter and amusement in their banter their actions made me laugh, not roll my eyes. It was also extremely clear to me right from the start that Faelan wasn’t just a good addition to their mix, but much needed to keep both Marco and Stephen from getting out of control and driving everyone else utterly bonkers.

I was really impressed how the author balanced these three characters so well together and how they each had their own very unique and individual aspects. Often in a threesome story one of the characters lags a little behind to my mind – is either overshadows or too close to an “add on” but that totally wasn’t the case here. While Marco and Stephen absolutely had a well defined and solid relationship already in place at the start, I could see how – even as happy as they were – there really seemed to be something lacking in the control department between them. Faelan was perfect for that and he really seemed a perfect fit which I just loved cos it made the whole progression from couple to threesome seem so natural and realistic. The sex was also smoking hot and really explicit – so erotica readers should find this aspect of the story really satisfying as well.

A great story with interesting characters and a wonderful threesome dynamic that I really enjoyed.

Smoke and Gold by Sean Michael

As the head Dominant, Zee is busy and on edge, trying to get all the playrooms ready for their eventual use. But a maddening dragon, Daniel, is just too much for Zee to resist, even with all the work he should be doing.

The chemistry between Zee and Daniel is pretty explosive right from the very first page. I’m usually not a fan of dragon stories so I was hesitant about this one but I was left really impressed and quite eager to read more. Daniel is not what I would think of as a typical dragon-shifter character. While Zee and Daniel are both strong, independent and dominant in their own fashion I really enjoyed how they interacted together. Daniel is not submissive in the style Zee is used to and while Zee is most certainly a strong Dominant, he’s flexible and can adapt in ways I don’t think Daniel had experienced previous to their meeting. So this was clearly a new and intriguing dynamic for both characters and I loved watching it unfurl.

Kinky and hot the sex was explosive between these two men and I feel the story will be very satisfying for readers looking for something along these lines. While nothing in their relationship is outrageously new it still felt fresh, realistic and not cliched to me so I really enjoyed the whole story and was engrossed from start to finish.

I really enjoyed all three of these stories and am looking forward to reading the next installment – Cereus: Opening.

There’s no way he’s letting anyone hurt his little.

After Nia’s father died her brother’s harassment only got worse and she knew she had to leave her home. On her way to go stay near her best friend, Nia drives through the night and is surprised when she’s pulled over by police officers. Tired and confused it takes her a while to realise the man who comes to help her is going to take his new responsibility very seriously.

I haven’t read many stories about Daddy kink yet but this was an interesting and fast paced short story. I really enjoyed the set up of how Nia and Travis met and found it refreshing and different enough it didn’t come across as forced or cliched to me. I also was pleased the author gave a fair bit of time in the story for Nia and Travis to spend together to get to know each other. In a number of ways Nia was in quite a vulnerable position and was trying hard to be self-sufficient and independent. While it would have been easy for Travis to be dominant and take over a lot of Nia’s life she wasn’t portrayed in the story as really wanting that and so them getting to know each other and allow the relationship to develop more naturally felt both more romantic but also a lot more realistic to me.

I was really pleased Travis and Nia took this extra time but I was a little disappointed a lot of this happened “off screen” and we didn’t get to see too much of it. With the short length of the story I sortof understand this – particularly since there was a fair bit of other plot happening around Nia getting settled in her new town, and her abusive brother chasing after her – but Travis and Nia’s relationship was quite central to my mind and it would have been nice to see them learning more about each other and starting this new relationship.

Readers who like some steamy sex should be satisfied with this story. While there is a bit of daddy-kink, Travis and Nia start out a little more vanilla and traditional and I feel this should really suit readers who aren’t too sure about this new genre of erotica. I feel this story is a good way to dip your toe in and the story didn’t feel to me like it was too hard core.

With some interesting plot, strong characters and a few well-written supporting characters this is a great, quick read and one I enjoyed.

In a city divided by a deep river valley, one side is stricken with a deadly outbreak. In order to protect themselves, the citizens on the other side of the valley destroy the connecting bridges and sever all transportation and communications links.

Brielle lives on the western side of the city in the epicenter of the outbreak. Rayden is a native of the east side. On the eve of the outbreak, he’s on his way to see Brielle when the two sides of the city are separated. With little information getting out, and no way to contact her, he’s desperate to know if Brielle is safe.

Even though the odds are stacked against them, the two lovers find an ingenious way to reconnect.

Brielle and Rayden had slowly but surely built a lovely relationship even though they lived on opposite sides of the city. When a strange virus strikes the entire city is thrown into chaos and communications are down along with the bridge that joins the two ends. Brielle and Rayden are separated – but their love for each other helps guide them to a new way to communicate and be together while they’re apart.

Considering these current times I haven’t been reading too many of the “plague kills everyone” or “post-apocalypse” style of stories because it’s not really “paranormal” or “dystopian” fiction anymore rather than another day checking out our global news. The plot of this one, however, really captured my interest. I was relieved and really pleased to find it hopeful and sweet – which is I feel is totally what we all need right now – and I loved how Brielle and Rayden were both determined to reconnect and be together even when they were physically divided.

I wasn’t too keen on the jumping around in the timeline – from the present back into the past of Rayden and Brielle starting their courtship, back and forth, but I admit I did enjoy seeing more of these two main characters interacting together and watching their story on how they fell in love and came to be together. I’m not sure the bouncing around will suit every readers tastes, but overall I felt the gain from getting more of an insight into Brielle and Rayden’s relationship was worth the headache of the jumping around.

Readers looking for an intensely erotic story won’t find that here. While Brielle and Rayden are in a relationship their physical separation means there isn’t much sex really to speak of in the story – just one flashback scene. The story focuses more around the steaminess and emotional connection between them. I found this different perspective refreshing and quite enjoyed it, though I would understand readers wanting and expecting an explicit and sexy story might not be satisfied with this aspect to the story.

I was nervous that the story mightn’t have a happy ending but I was delighted to be proven wrong. This story has a satisfying and very happy finish and I feel readers will be really pleased with this. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this story even though it hit a bit close to home. I really feel readers can give this a chance and they shouldn’t find themselves disappointed.
