The Summer Guests by Mary Alice Monroe – Spotlight

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Mary Alice Monroe who is celebrating yesterday’s release of her newest book The Summer Guests.

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Beach House series comes a heartwarming and evocative novel about the bonds and new beginnings that are born from natural disasters and how, even during the worst of circumstances—or perhaps because of them—we discover what is most important in life.

Late August is a beautiful time on the Southern coast—the peach trees are ripe, the ocean is warm, and the sweet tea is icy. A perfect time to enjoy the rocking chairs on the porch. But beneath the calm surface bubbles a threat: it’s also peak hurricane season.

When a hurricane threatens the coasts of Florida and South Carolina, an eclectic group of evacuees flees for the farm of their friends Grace and Charles Phillips in North Carolina: the Phillips’s daughter Moira and her rescue dogs, famed equestrian Javier Angel de la Cruz, makeup artist Hannah McLain, horse breeder Gerda Klug and her daughter Elise, and island resident Cara Rutledge. They bring with them only the few treasured possessions they can fit in their vehicles. Strangers to all but the Phillips, they must ride out the storm together.

During the course of one of the most challenging weeks of their lives, relationships are put to the test as the evacuees are forced to confront the unresolved issues they have with themselves and with each other. But as the storm passes, they realize that what really matters isn’t what they brought with them to the mountains. Rather, it’s what they’ll take with them once they leave.

With Mary Alice Monroe’s “usual resplendent storytelling” (Patti Callahan Henry, New York Times bestselling author), The Summer Guests is a poignant and compelling story of self-discovery, love, and redemption.

The storm originated as a tropical wave off the coast of Africa, but during the next forty-eight hours, it grew highly organized. As it veered west, it met with favorable, warm surface-water temperatures and low wind shear. It rapidly intensified, developing a distinct eye feature. When the sustained winds reached seventy-five miles per hour, the storm was given a name: Hurricane Noelle.

The hurricane wobbled, shifting directions and sending the experts racing back to their computers to create updated tracking cones. This, in turn, sent another group of residents into panic mode. Everyone living in the Caribbean and along the southeastern coast of the United States was stocking up on supplies and preparing for evacuation.

The only thing the experts agreed upon was that Hurricane Noelle was fast becoming an extremely powerful, Cape Verde–type hurricane, typical in August and September and potentially deadly. As the storm plowed west across the Atlantic and intensified, it was becoming possibly the most catastrophic hurricane to reach land in more than a decade.

Tropical Storm Noelle intensifies into a hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean

Cara Rutledge rubbed her arms and looked out over the Atlantic Ocean. The mercurial sea rolled in and out in its metronome fashion, reflecting the blue-gray color of the sky. The beach was nearly empty, the vast expanse of sand scarred only by her footprints. All seemed calm. Even the golden panicles of the sea oats hung still in the pensive air. Yet she sensed a heightened tension coiling under the calm façade of the water, like some great beast rippling, lying in wait to pounce.

Cara shivered, though it wasn’t cold. She was a tall, slender woman accustomed to daily walks along the beach with her daughter, Hope. She’d spent her childhood on this beach, and had returned as an adult to make the quaint beach house, Primrose Cottage, her home. From May until October she was on the Island Turtle Team, like her mother before her. After a lifetime living beside the ocean, she felt attuned to the moods of her old friend. And today, something felt off.

The sun was shining, but thin streaks of clouds stretched from the sea toward land, eerie fingers reaching out from the incoming storm.

Cara inhaled the salty air and placed her hand against her chest. There was an unusual heaviness in the air. A moistness that tasted of rain. She was no stranger to summer storms, or the havoc they could wreak. She also knew that she was unusually skittish when it came to storms. Cara had lived through too many hurricanes not to be on guard. And yet, she didn’t want to panic. There was a wave out in the Atlantic the meteorologists were keeping an eye on, but it was August, the height of the hurricane season. There were a lot of storms that lost steam or changed direction long before they neared landfall.

She was leaving the island this afternoon to visit the mountains of North Carolina with David Wyatt and his family. It would be a welcome change of pace with the lush green foliage, cooler air, and hiking. She might even get some horseback riding in. She exhaled slowly. Yes, she thought with relief. She was working herself up over nothing. Whatever storm was coming would likely blow in and out by the time she returned. And, she thought with a hint of a smile on her face, she was bringing along with her the one thing she treasured most in the world—her daughter, Hope.

Cara turned her back on the ocean and, swinging her arms, began her trek across the beach toward home.

IN THE BACK CORNER of the tavern, he sat there and scrutinized as his fellow man, made fools of themselves in their drunken debauchery. He never quite understood how as an ordinary person you wanted to lower yourself to this behavior. As he waited patiently for news of any kind, he observed as the men drank themselves into imbeciles.

Lifting the mug to his mouth he took a long swallow of the disgusting ale. It tasted like soap water. Drinking it quickly, he swiped his lips on the sleeve of his coat. He wanted to spit the brew onto the floor, but he resisted as the barkeep scrutinized him with suspicion. Banging the mug on the table he nodded at him for a refill.

The barkeep kept an eye on him as he spoke to a man at the bar. They exchanged words as the stranger glanced over his shoulder, looking him over. After they spoke a few more words, the man made his way out the tavern door. The barkeep shouted for the serving girl to bring him his refill.

Charles propped back in his chair, rocking it on its back two legs. When the tavern girl approached him, he landed the stool on all fours. She leaned over placing his ale before him, lowering her bosom in his face. When she rose, he was able to catch an eyeful of her breasts filling out of her tight dress. Her corset pushed her breasts up tight and high while her dress laid low right above her nipples. One quick tug and they would fall out into his hands; if he so desired.

She tipped his hat back, so she could look into his eyes and smile. “Is there anything else I can get for you sir?”

Charles pulled her hand away from his face tightening his grip. When she gasped in pain, he realized he needed to play his part better. To distract her, he drew her in his lap, nuzzling her neck. When she purred and went soft against him, he sensed she had forgotten the pain he inflected on her a few seconds ago. To continue his seduction, he traced his fingers across the neckline of her dress, his finger dipping inside to trace along her nipples.

“What is your name darling?”

“Bessie.”

“There is a lot you can do for me Bessie, maybe later after your shift is done?” He raised his eyebrow in question.

“I get off in a few hours, I have a room above we can use.” She told him as her hand wandered down to his lap.

“Well Bessie that does sound promising. In the meantime, do you think you can help me with some information?”

He continued to caress her as he saw her look back and forth between the barkeep and him. As a stranger in town; he was under suspicion. If questions were asked to too many people, it could draw unwanted attention upon himself. He nodded his head to the barkeep and smiled as if he enjoyed what was being offered in his tavern. That appeared to pacify the man he was a stranger passing through the village wanting a night’s enjoyment before he left.

“Bessie?”

When she noticed she was not being watched any more, she shook her head yes.

“Now Bessie, I do not want to get you in any trouble with your boss. So, when I ask you a question, just play along with me, okay, honey?”

Necessity of a Writing Room by Naomi Boom – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Necessity of a Writing Room

Turns out, I desperately require a writing space. A lack of one messes with my head. I can’t seem to focus and my work suffers. It suffers so much that I blame my recent bout with writer’s block on a lack of my own creative space.

When I lived in Kansas, my writing area was my living room. I sat in my favorite chair, ignored the tv in front of me, and focused on my work. That room worked beautifully, and I miss it so, so much.

But then I moved. Twice. The second move was not good. I had zero space to write in, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t find a comfortable workspace. Luckily, I only lived there for a span of four months before moving to my current house where I discovered a new set of problems.

First, my behemoth of a desk wouldn’t fit into my designated office. Then, my step-daughter moved in and I lost the room completely, but I won’t complain about that loss because I’m delighted she’s here. But that still left me searching for a work area. Anyplace that would allow me to work in peace, with minimal distractions, and a cozy atmosphere. I tried working in my living room but something felt off. The room felt too open and just didn’t work, which meant I had to get creative and find something else.

So, what did I do?

I emptied a storage room and squeezed my favorite rocking chair into the corner. As you can see in the following picture, it’s not pretty but it has had the most amazing effect on my ability to work.

This room makes me actually want to work and not just stare blankly at my computer screen. It’s the most freeing, magical feeling, and now I can say I have an official writing room. Although it needs some paint, and different shelves, and décor. But it has electrical outlets and my favorite chair, and most importantly, grants me the freedom to write.

If I ever move again, I now know my number one priority, aside from necessities, is to establish a creative space. Granted, my current one is far from finished. I need to find a soothing paint color and I am open to suggestions. Seriously. Suggestions for any improvement at all because I am having the toughest time deciding on a paint color.

And yet, he can’t seem to stop thinking of her, touching her, kissing her…He must act in her brother’s stead, which means he has to approve her suitor and ensure her safety. Unfortunately, he can’t seem to find a worthy gentleman.

Wedding her off should be a simple task, but not if he can’t let her go.

“I have too given you compliments.”

“Really?” She exhaled. “Name one.”

He contemplated the matter for a moment and then said, “I told you your hair was prettier in disarray.”

She had forgotten that. “So you said one thing. Congratulations.”

“Thank you.” He swept an exaggerated bow and smirked up at her.

“That is not something to be proud of. Why, it’s not even that monumental a compliment.”

He straightened, and a light flared in his eyes. There had always been an easy mood between them, but he had never looked at her in such a way before. It was almost, well, sinful.

“Allow me to remedy my error, then.” He caught her hand in his, and gazed deep into her eyes. “Your eyes remind me of a summer storm.” Her gaze faltered from his, but he continued. “Your skin is as smooth as fine porcelain, and your hair is made of the most enticing curls I have ever seen. I can imagine your freed hair would make a man lose his senses. And lastly, you have deliciously kissable lips.”

She swallowed. His ridiculous, probably oft-used lines had the most amazing effect on her. Her knees had grown weak, and her mind was slow to focus. “I-I d-don’t think…” Her voice trailed off as he chuckled.

“With that said, you also possess a tremendous ability to irritate me beyond comprehension.”

About the Author: Naomi Boom never expected to love writing. Her inspiration struck while searching for the perfect historical romance novel to read. Nothing sounded appealing, so she decided to write her own. That one novel has morphed into a series, and hopefully many, many more.

She resides in her home state of South Dakota with her husband and toddler. Her dream is to someday find an acreage where she can raise chickens and, naturally, continue her writing.

Emma Guthrie has been playing it safe all her life, watching friends marry and have families. She’s dedicated her life to healing others and now it’s time to heal herself.

Duke Rivers and Gage Randall are intrigued by the blushing doctor, whom they’ve observed in the past making a naughty sex toy purchase. Fate brings them together when Emma treats Gage for an arrow wound to the buttocks. When she moves in upstairs, they decide it’s time to take a chance.

The socially awkward threesome discovers a mutual need to stop allowing life to pass them by, and they embark on a quest to accomplish each item on their “bucket list” together. From the treetops of the North Georgia Mountains to the frozen Canadian Northwest Territories and points in between, they chase their dreams as danger closes in at home. Will Emma pay the ultimate price for loving them both?

Playing it safe has gotten Emma an invite to the local quilting circling and a fear of things outside her comfort zone. Now all she needs is a few dozen cats, a rocking chair, a blanket and at the ripe old age of thirty-seven she’ll be set to slip right on into old age…having never really lived. But … not if two super cute and awfully sweet geeks armed with a bucket list have anything to say about it.

I simply adore a character I can relate to. It’s not that I have so much in common with Dr. Emma Guthrie on a professional level but I could easily relate to her feeling like she hadn’t done enough, seen enough, experienced enough in her relatively short life. All of that changes when the opportunity to cross off items from her personal bucket list presents itself in the form of cousins Duke and Gage. Not surprisingly, the sexual chemistry was pretty instant; it was the way their personalities matched up so seamlessly on a personal level that really made their story sing.

Do you ever try to picture an actor or actress playing the part of the storybook character? I pictured Sandra Bullock playing Emma. She’s “girl next door” pretty and a bit of an introvert waiting to burst out of her shell. Duke and Gage are the perfect catalyst to literally push her out of a plane, up a tree and into a smoking hot ménage relationship.

I haven’t read many “geek” charming books but if the heroes resemble these cousins I’ll have to reconsider. Don’t get me wrong, these aren’t pocket protector wearing nerds. They’re really just regular (hot) guys who happen to enjoy vegging out with a good Call of Duty game session with friends. Tracking and monitoring potential bad guys can be exhausting so I’d say they deserve some distraction and R&R. Lately, the distraction has been the sexy, sassy doctor downstairs.

Rainier even though it closes out at just shy of 200 pages. It’s fast paced and covers a long courtship over a short time. The story moves quickly from one month to the next, but Ms. Rainier makes the time change obvious at the beginning of each new section. Emma is a doctor who’s on call more than she’s off and the boys tend to work out of town a lot so it wasn’t necessary to throw in conversations, shared meals or quickies for the sake of filling pages. The parts of their story that is given is rich with detail and fun dialogue. Ms. Rainier even works in the background for Gage to give readers a sympathetic understanding of his personality and how he and Duke came to be so close. It’s heart wrenching but with a happy ending.

The main premise of the story is Emma, Duke and Gage getting together and making a connection. However, there’s an underlying, and seemingly innocent, minor plot that causes a major wave in their lives towards the end. Overall, I think it was a necessary experience to show the characters they shouldn’t take their time together for granted.

Mr. Rainer does a splendid job of introducing some new characters and future stories within this holiday romp. I’m particularly looking forward to reading Clay’s story. The young lady who’s injured in front of his store seemed familiar to the clever jeweler and that’s guaranteed to mean fireworks when she recovers. I’m also curious to see if their story will involve another male lead (as all but one Divine story have at least two men) and if so, who will it be??

If you’re as totally absorbed by the folks of Divine as I am, you won’t want to miss Their Divine Doctor. It inspired me to create my own bucket list of things I’ve only thought about doing. As Gage, Emma and Duke discovered, there’s a whole world of exciting things to do and places to go if you just set your mind to experiencing life rather than simply talking about it. Pick up your copy today and be prepared to be swept into a world that is simply Divine.

Vignette – Ever Fallen In Love

I thought for the last post of the week, I’d share an outtake-slash-scene from the planned next race story. It’s in Megan’s pov, even though the follow-up is about Janine. Enjoy this little snippet. It’s one of my favorites of Megan and Tucker.

Megan sat in her office and stared blankly at the pile of paperwork in front of her. It was the off-season and her thoughts were focused on anything but her work. The season was about to start and her new driver for the truck series, Ryan Westfall, had already wrecked two trucks during a test session at the Rockingham facility. It was meant to give him experience, not raise her expenditures for the year.

She ran her fingers through her hair and closed her eyes. If she could get about three straight hours without interruption, she might be able to get her paperwork caught up.

“Are you in there?”

Megan opened her eyes and looked at the door to her office. She wasn’t sure how long she’d been zoning or maybe it was dozing, but she guessed it was long enough for someone to worry. “Yes, I’m in here. I can’t get too far.”

Tucker ambled in, locked the door and gave her a sheepish smile. He was dressed casually in jeans and one of his many sponsor t-shirts. His hat, emblazoned with the Blitz logo, barely contained his mop of sandy brown hair. “You can go wherever you want—as long as you take me with you.” He sat on her desk in front of her. “I’ve got a free afternoon and want to spend time with someone special. Do you mind?”

“Oh, I don’t suppose,” Megan replied with a coy smile.

“Did you know, kissing girls causes babies?”

Megan cocked her head and smirked. “If that’s the case, then we’d be swimming in children.”

Tucker pulled her up into an embrace on his lap and whispered, “I don’t necessarily need any kids in the near or far future. Some of our employees are childish enough for me.”

She gingerly touched the creases in his t-shirt and answered, “You’re childish enough for me.”

“So you want to fight fire with fire, huh,” he said and smoothed her hair to the side in order to nuzzle her neck. “Two can play that game, but I have an idea that’s much better.”

Without looking, he reached back and cleared the desk off with a swipe of his forearm. Papers and office products flew onto the floor in a fluttery mess.
Megan took his hat off, placed it backwards on her own head and continued his kiss while she ran her fingers gingerly through his hair. They slowly leaned back onto her desk, completely wrapped up in each other.

Tucker pulled her tank top out of her jeans, caressing her back. But he was quickly interrupted when Megan’s office door jiggled. Slowly they both looked in the direction of the door without bothering to change position.

“I’m interrupting something important?” Janine huffed. “Well, don’t lock your door.”

“I was trying to smother her with affection, but I guess you can see that,” Tucker said sarcastically. Megan sat up and perched on the edge of her desk.

“What was so Earth-shattering that you had to unlock my locked door,” she asked as she smoothed down her shirt and hunted for her hair clip.

“I’m sorry. I was just excited,” Janine said. “I have to tell you something.”

“Obviously,” Megan replied flatly and flicked her hair over her shoulder.

Tucker sat up and slid over into Megan’s chair. Patting his lap, he motioned Megan over and said, “So what is it that we need to know?”

“I found true love,” Janine exclaimed.

Tucker and Megan exchanged startled looks. “Who?”

Janine sat down on one of the office chairs in front of Megan’s desk and folded her hands. “He’s a photographer, makes a boat load, and seems to really like me. I thought he was hot and he thought I was cute so we kinda got together. It’s been developing, pardon the pun again, over the last couple of weeks. He knows nothing about NASCAR, but that’s okay. I know nothing about photography,” she bubbled. “I think he’s my soul mate.”

Megan smiled weakly and looked at Tucker. “Kinda? What do you mean ‘you think’?”

Janine shrugged nonchalantly. “I’m tired of dating duds.”

“That dud is one of my best friends,” Tucker reminded her bluntly. “Have you said anything to Eric about this? You two were pretty hot and heavy last season, or is the dud no longer privy to your life?”

Megan nodded in agreement. “Yeah, I think Eric might be a little hurt. Don’t you think,” she asked.

Janine bit her lip trying to delay an answer. “Well…you know how things go…”

“Oh, I see,” Tucker said. “I see very clearly.”

Megan tried to break the tension. “Well, if you like this gentleman, he must be pretty special. Are you bringing him in here,” she asked and pointed to her desk. “I don’t want to be in the middle of something with my door locked, if that’s your plan.”

“I’ll knock and give you a minute to get straightened,” Janine deadpanned, but the excitement never left her face.

Tucker scowled at her. “That’s what I’m afraid of,” he grumbled.

“See you at five,” she said and floated out of the office.

Once Janine left, Megan looked at Tucker and said, “Gee, and I thought I’d have a quiet day working on the lineup for the Fling.”

He laughed and added, “And I thought I’d come in here and relieve your stress.” He nodded to the clock. “Oh, look. It’s time to head home. Mind if I drive?”

“As long as I’m with you, I’m already home.”
