Top Ten Tuesday: Valentine’s Day Picture Books for Young Children

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

One of the latest trends I’ve noticed where I live is that Valentine’s Day is beginning to be used to celebrate non-romantic types of love as well as the romantic types.

For example, some people here now buy chocolates or flowers for their closest platonic friends. Others have started giving small Valentine’s Day gifts to their young children or grandchildren.

In honor of this cultural shift, here are ten picture books  about Valentine’s Day and love in general from as many different cultures as I could find for the little ones in your life.

1. Hugs and Hearts by Toni Trent Parker

2. Homemade Love by Bell Hooks

3. On Mother’s Lap by Ann Herbert Scott

  1. I haven’t heard of any of these picture books before, so I’ll definitely be ordering a few to check out with my little ones. My favourite is probably Guess How Much I Love You?, which always gets both of them stretching their arms so wide (and absolutely breaking my heart in the process!).

  2. Aw I’m gonna take a look at each of these. I like that Valentine’s Day is branching out like that!

  3. Oh, that’s such a fun idea! I love the idea of using Valentine’s day to celebrate all types of love, not just romantic 🙂

  4. What a great idea! I like that you did something a little different.

  5. This is a really sweet take on the prompt! My grandmother used to give me small gifts on Valentine’s Day when I was a kid because she didn’t want me eating so many sweets.

  6. Nice list! I love how you also featured love focused stories that are not necessarily romances…I did that with my list this year and it’s so fun to break the mold!

  7. I hadn’t noticed this trend, but what a novel (pardon the pun) take on the prompt! Happy TTT 🙂

  8. This is a super cute take on the topic, I love it!

  9. I definitely bought my granddaughter a Valentine’s Day gift…although my hubby and I don’t really celebrate that day, lol. Of course I bought her a book BEFORE seeing your great list.

  10. I love this take on your TTT!

  11. Yes, I’ve noticed that shift. I’ll have to check these out as my grandkids always love a good picture book! Thanks for stopping by my TTT! 🙂

  12. This is such a sweet list!

  13. What a lovely twist to the topic. We don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day much in Europe, so I loved every list that did something a little differently. Thanks.

And thanks for visiting my TTT earlier.

  14. Reminds me of the times I took my sons, years and years ago, to the library to get them interested in reading through picture books. Hopefully it worked! These look good.

  15. Those titles all sound really interesting! Great idea for a TTT!

  16. I like that idea too, it’s making it more of a holiday for everyone. Love your twist on the topic 🙂

  17. Haven’t heard of any of these, but they sound like they might be cute. 🙂 Thanks, as always, for visiting Finding Wonderland. Appreciate this. 🙂

I don’t know any of these but Freckles & Willie looks like one I’d have really loved growing up.

  21. Awww, I love this! I don’t recognize any of these so thank you for sharing them! <3
