I generally prefer reading about travel to actually going anywhere myself. That way I can skip straight to the fun stuff and not have to stand in any long security lines or be squished by strangers on a plane on the way.
Here are ten books that feature travel.
1. A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail by Bill Bryson
2. Under the Tuscan Sun: At Home in Italy by Frances Mayes
3. Blood River: A Journey to Africa’s Broken Heart by Tim Butcher
4. Dark Star Safari: Overland from Cairo to Cape Town by Paul Theroux
6. Out of Africa by Isak Dinesen
7. The Geography of Bliss: One Grump’s Search for the Happiest Places in the World by Eric Weiner
8. Holy Cow: An Indian Adventure by Sarah Macdonald
9. Tracks: A Woman’s Solo Trek Across 1700 Miles of Australian Outback by Robyn Davidson
10. Kilimanjaro: One Man’s Quest to Go Over the Hill by M.G. Edwards
How do you all feel about travelling in real life?
Couldn’t not mention Bryson! Some of these sound interesting. I imagine TRACKS had plenty of danger.
I enjoy traveling IRL, though I don’t have the means to do globetrotting. All of my travel has been in the US or via armchair.
I’m sure it did!
Bill Bryson is a great choice. I love his travel writing.
Agreed. He’s great. 🙂
I don’t think I’ve heard of any of these, so yay for some new possible armchair adventure stories. 🙂 Thanks for sharing and for visiting my list today, too.
You’re quite welcome!
Day trips to local destinations are the extent of my travel lately! Nice list! 🙌📚
I love day trips! They’re perfect.
Armchair travelling definitely has many perks!
For sure. 🙂
I used to like it, but there were some stressful times. Now with the kids even going out for the day down the road is stressful!!
An interesting list of books featuring lots of different places.
Have a great week!
Kids make travel much more complicated for sure!
Great list! I’ve always wanted to visit Italy. Maybe someday. Under the Tuscan Sun is one of my favorite movies. I had no idea it was based on a book. Happy Tuesday!
FYI: The book is much different, and much better, than the movie, imo.
Good to know!
That sounds like such a pretty place to visit.
Holy Cow sounds fun! Love this list, so many travel books out there. Thanks for dropping by my post!
You’re welcome. I love how many books there are out there on this topic.
Ooh nice picks! These are all totally new to me ones.
Thanks for visiting my TTT!
You’re welcome.
Non-fiction travel is a good idea for this prompt – only read bits from the Bill Bryson (on an English language practice exam, I think!)
Oh, that’s cool!
I enjoy visiting new places, but the actual travel part of it isn’t my favorite. Still, I’ll endure it to see places I want to see.
Happy TTT!

I get that. 🙂
You have some amazing books on this list, and most of them are going on my TBR list. As for travel, I do like to go places if I can stay for awhile, interact with the locals, etc. Not a fan of seeing all the sights that can be packed into a week.
Thanks for stopping by my blog. And I appreciate you dropping your link too.
You’re welcome! I prefer interacting with locals, too.
Good work! All are to me–that’s always fun!
It’s so fun when that happens!
I can identify with your thoughts on the drawbacks about travelling – but it’s not the same as seeing places in person. Still, it is good to read about them see pictures and watch films. As you know I’ve read A Walk in the Woods and I’ve also read Under the Tuscan Sun. I haven’t read Out of Africa yet – it’s one of my TBRs and I hope to read it eventually.
That’s a good point!
I agree about the drawbacks of travelling but reading about places isn’t the same as visiting them – these days, though I mainly read and watch TV and films of far-flung places. As you know I’ve read A Walk in the Woods. I’ve also read Under the Tuscan Sun (a place I have visited and loved) I have a copy of Out of Africa, but haven’t read it yet..
I hope you like it!
Nice list! I loved Bryson’s book – the movie is terrible.
My husband and I relistened to the part of the book set in Georgia, on our way to a section of the Appalachian trail that we did there!
Thanks for the heads up about the film. Your hike sounds fun.
These all sound really good! I love traveling in real life (once I arrive, at least) and getting to see what a place is really like, at least off the beaten paths. The best trips I’ve had are when I can spend a bit of time in a place.
Thank you. Yes, those are the best sorts of trips.
