One of my Writing Quirks
One of my writing quirks – and it is the only one of which I am aware – is that I write while I run.

The Little Milly series is written in rhyme, so the cadence of a long run syncs up perfectly with the testing of which syllables to stress or not. My heartbeat, breathing and footsteps all help keep my rhyming patterns on track. Beyond this functional/structural benefit, the endorphins generated on a run put me in a much happier, freer, childlike state of mind; this is the perfect way to feel when crafting stories about six giggling sisters running amok. Running is my version of prewriting.

A friend once said, ‘Sometimes the hardest line to cross is the starting line.’ I found that wildly insightful as a runner, as well as a writer. I have been running for twenty years, and the first 15 minutes are always brutal. Staring down the barrel of my daily run, I am not usually excited. I know what I am in for, at least to start. However, I do it. I begin, one foot in front of the other, the first 15 minutes pass and then my joints, lungs and muscles hit their stride and I start to flow. The joy comes. The miles get done. It is the same with writing. Thinking about starting feels awful, but the magic lies in simply beginning. You don’t have to write well, or even coherently at first, just start to put words down. Move your fingers on the keyboard and eventually you are drafting, revising and editing. The act of writing creates the writer, just as the act of running creates the runner. You aren’t born as either and there is no avoiding the hard start!

Kelly knew Little Milly Lake as Grandma Mill McInenly. The usually serious Mildred would occasionally surprise her granddaughter with tales of the fun and mischief that she and her five older sisters found growing up in the Maritimes in the early 1900s. The combination of little money or supervision, and a notoriously grumpy father, made for simple stories with just the right blend of silly and sweet.Little Milly and the Great Lakes is Kelly’s first creative writing endeavor… she has been distracted by Little Mateo and Little Lucas.

Get silly with Milly on her other adventures…Bess and the Boil, Marj and the Medal, and Peg and the Party Line.

Smug as pie, Marj skipped off to claim her big loot,
The prize: A 1-gallon jar stuffed full of dried fruit.
“Marj, won’t you please share… just a wee apricot?”
“Prizes are for winners, and win you did not!”
Marj sat on the dock, pleased as mean Mr. Punch,
And gobbled her winnings… a victory lunch!
