Gisele whimpered when she came to. Her whole body hurt. She was lying on her back, someone cradling her head, a strong hand on the nape of her neck. A thumb brushed her cheek, and warm, calloused fingers tipped her head back. The world careened beneath her, and she swallowed against a surge of rising bile.

“Wake up, Gigi. Please, you have to wake up.” He murmured the words over and over, his voice shattered, raw—and so pulse-flutteringly familiar.

For a second, it triggered a half-formed memory from her childhood, warm and happy—a memory of another’s hand in her hair, brushing aside dirt and weeds, of a boy laughing and whispering against her ear. But then the image flared and died.

It was a lie. She’d had no happy childhood. And Shade couldn’t have possibly been there. Just like he couldn’t be here now.

“Come on, Gigi. Open your eyes. I need you to look at me.”

She blinked up, and her coworker’s annoyingly handsome face blurred into focus.

Except he looked different, less abrasive. His slate-gray eyes, wide and clouded with concern, searched hers in silent questioning. His mouth was a taut line, and his dark brows were furrowed, but relief softened his usual grim expression.

He was shirtless, his bare chest sheened with sweat. His ash-brown hair had slicked across his forehead, and a peculiar urge to brush the damp strands aside twisted in her belly. She must’ve fried her brain, because it looked as if large, black wings curved high off his back.

“Christ, Gigi, what were you thinking? I thought it’d killed you.” Shade pressed his forehead to hers, breath catching. When he pulled back, his gaze slid to the curio in her hand, then lingered, intent. The hand cupping her face slipped away.

When she opened her eyes again, he was gone.

What Scares Me the Most as an Author by Jo McNally – Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. As an author, what scares me the most is…

I’ve come to understand and accept that a large part of being an author is being in a constant state of fear. Will I finish this book? Will anyone read it? Will they like it? Can I write another one? Is that the right word for this sentence? Is that the right sentence for this scene? Do I need this scene at all?

Okay, let me slow my heart rate back down. I think you get the idea. It’s very easy for an author to become paralyzed by fear and doubt. The key is to push through that fear. When I sit down at my computer and stare at a blank screen, that first keystroke is like stepping off a cliff in the fog. Will I land on a ledge safely? Or will I fall and go splat? There’s only one way to find out–start typing.

One of my greatest fears in writing Stealing Kisses in the Snow was whether or not I could accomplish my goal of having a holiday romance that was funny and sexy, but that also took the reader on an emotional journey with Logan and Piper. He’s a confirmed drifter, going from one oil rig to another. He’s only in Rendezvous Falls to help his grandmother while she recuperates. He never expects to fall for a stressed-out widowed mom who has her hands full with her two kids, a fixer-upper house, and her former in-laws. Not to mention her guilt over moving forward four years after the death of her husband. That’s a lot of weight, and I was afraid it might pull the book off-track.

But I was able to use Piper’s children, her money pit of a house, and the signature Rendezvous Falls senior book club to bring some comic relief at the right moments. Despite my worries, I think the balance ended up being just right, and Stealing Kisses in the Snow still feels like a holiday romance.

Of course, being an author, I’ll still lose sleep worrying about it!

Maybe “perfect” is over-rated…

Between juggling two kids, two jobs, and a fixer-upper house, single mom Piper Montgomery is so busy she can hardly see straight. But when rugged biker Logan Taggert strolls into the B&B where she’s working, she can’t help but stare. He has bad boy written all over him. She’s promised her kids a “perfect Christmas” this year, and bad boys aren’t part of the plan. But how can she resist?

Once his grandmother is back on her feet, Logan can leave her Victorian B&B and get back on the road. It’s where he belongs after all, even if his grandmother’s matchmaking book club biddies try to convince him otherwise. But there’s something about beautiful, spitfire Piper that makes him wonder if kids and commitment might be just what he needs after all.

As Christmas draws ever closer, so do Piper and Logan. Could these two opposites find all they want this Christmas is each other?

“Okay, Lily. If you see that giant again, bring him to me so I can tell him to stop hanging around here. It’s bad for business.”

Lily giggled and dashed out of the kitchen before Piper could tell her they were leaving soon. She put away the rest of the dishes and tossed the dishrag into the bin to be washed. She was mopping up the last corner of the floor when she heard the kitchen door open again. Good—Lily hadn’t wandered far.

“I’m glad you’re back, sweetie. I’m almost done, so—”

“Momma! I found the giant! Isn’t he hoomongus?”

Piper turned and froze, clutching the mop handle tightly. Lily was standing in the doorway, holding hands with a stranger. Well over six feet tall, with straggly, wet hair hanging to his shoulders and a scruffy beard, the man was clothed entirely in black leather, including leather chaps on his long legs. He had the deepest-set eyes Piper had ever seen, shadowed under heavy, dark brows. With his size and overall menacing appearance, it was no wonder Lily thought he was a giant.

And he was holding her daughter’s tiny hand.

Piper bristled, her exhaustion gone in a flash. She’d gladly battle actual monsters to save her children, and big or not (and he was big), this was just a man. A man who was about to regret touching her little girl. She brandished the mop handle in front of her like a sword as she went toward him. “You let her go right this minute! And get out of here! I’m calling the police…” She fumbled to get her phone out of her back pocket while still aiming the mop at him. Her voice was fast approaching a scream. “You get the hell away from my daughter!”

A dashing man from back east meets an unconventional Native American woman and they join hearts against all odds in this spellbinding tale of passion and western adventure from New York Times bestselling author Bobbi Smith.

Chance Broderick has plenty of charm and more than enough wealth, and his life among the Boston Brahmins offers plenty of tempting distractions. But when he receives word that his brother is in grave danger in the Arizona Territory, Chance dutifully travels west to help. There he finds wild, vast lawless lands full of surprises. But his greatest shock on the frontier is when he discovers that the tracker he’s hired is not the brash young boy he assumed, but a beautiful young Native American woman, Rori.

Raised by her Native American grandfather after the death of her white father and her Pima mother, Rori is an expert tracker who knows how to fend for herself. Chance is fascinated but she takes an instant dislike to him and nothing will satisfy her more than showing the arrogant man from back east a thing or two about how things are done on the frontier out west. Nothing could satisfy her more, that is, except the pleasure of his searing touch, his soft kisses. For Rori can’t help craving Chance as fiercely as he desires her and as they overcome the worlds of indifference and hostility which threaten to separate them, they find true love is their one destiny.

Enjoy an Excerpt:

Rori remained rooted where she was on the far side of the bed. When Chance turned to look at her, their gazes locked across the room, and she suddenly knew a strange sense of intense isolation. It seemed to Rori that they were the only two people left in the world. The thought made her uncomfortable, and she frowned.

Chance studied the boy from where he stood, staring at his bruised face as if actually seeing him for the first time. Rori was every bit Indian from his braided hair to his moccasined feet, and he looked suitably fierce, especially with his battered cheek. Chance knew from his own personal experience that there was nothing the least bit soft about the youth, but something about his slight build and brilliant green eyes made him seem almost vulnerable right now.

It pained Chance considerably to admit that the stubborn, argumentative boy had put up one hell of a fight, and that his unexpected but timely arrival had saved him from certain death.

“Rori…thank you,” he said earnestly.

The rough velvet of Chance’s deep voice sent unexpected chills down Rori’s spine. Staring at him in the golden glow of the lamplight, realizing how totally mesmerizing he was, she felt her heart hammer wildly in her breast. A tiny voice in the back of her thoughts warned her that this was something else . . . something special, and a surge of unexplained panic welled up inside her.

“I told you it was a miracle you’d managed to stay alive this long!” she spoke up, being deliberately sarcastic to break the tension that had been building inside of her. “Who was your nursemaid before I came along?”

“Amazingly enough, until I ran into you, I was managing to take care of myself quite well,” Chance remarked.

Lessons I learned from Gracie Ingraham, Time Traveler by Christine Potter – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Lessons I learned from Gracie Ingraham, Time Traveler

There’s something kind of magic about the process of writing. All writers know this. When you’re hard at work writing—in flow, as they say—the world goes away, and a movie starts playing somewhere in your brain. Sometimes you don’t even feel your fingers on the computer keys. The story just…happens.

Of course, it comes from you. You are making it up. Those characters—the villain, the heroine, the funny minor character you’re a little too in love with—they’re all you. It’s hard to remember that sometimes.

So what could an old babe like me learn from a high school sophomore from 1962 suddenly transported in time to 2018 because her time-traveling parents were trying to keep her safe from a possible nuclear holocaust? Quite a bit, it turns out. Let me count out the lessons!

1. Fear is the real enemy. Gracie Ingraham’s parents are Travelers—people who can will themselves back in time to visit bygone eras. Turns out there are two kinds of people in the world: Travelers and folks who are stuck in their own time period. I guess it’s like Muggles and Wizards, sort of. Travelers have some special responsibilities: no time travel for personal gain. No messing with the past. And no going to the future. Because they are afraid that there will be a nuclear war, the Ingrahams try to hide their daughter Grace in the past—the late 1800’s to be exact. Bad idea. Stuff born out of fear almost never works out.

2. Sometimes the big rules are made to be broken. But you have to have a darn good reason to do so. Gracie ends up going the wrong way when she attempts her first trip in time. She goes forward, to the future. There’s a reason for that and it’s not at all selfish and no spoilers. Read the book if you want to know more!

3. When in doubt, listen and observe carefully. People tend to talk too much and it keeps them from learning everything they can about the world around them. Say you’re a high school sophomore who barely even knows how to work a transistor radio trying to pretend she’s had an iPhone since she was nine. Having good observational skills can help you keep your most important secret: that you are a time traveler. If you keep your mouth shut and look interested, people will almost always tell you what you just need to know.

4. There are worse things than being lost. Gracie spends most of this book lost in time. And yet she’s never really alone. The people she needs show up for her. It’s just a question of her trusting them–and trusting herself. My new mantra, taken up after I finished writing this book: It’ll be okay.

I hope Gracie’s Time teaches you a few things you didn’t expect, too! Thanks for dropping by Long and Short Reviews today.

October, 1962
It’s almost Halloween, but something a lot scarier than ghosts is on everyone’s mind: nuclear war. After President Kennedy’s speech to the nation about the Cuban Missile Crisis, Grace Ingraham overhears her parents’ plans to keep her safe. She’ll be sent off to live with a wealthy uncle—in the nineteenth century.

Gracie’s from a family of Travelers, people who can escape into time. Too bad her mom and dad haven’t Traveled since their honeymoon trip to the Lincoln Inauguration. So Grace will have to go alone—even though taking a wrong turn can have serious consequences: like heading for 1890, and ending up …in 2018.

Enjoy an Excerpt

I heard a snoring sound in the sky then, but it was only a plane. For a moment I thought about how terrible it would be if a nuclear war started right that minute, before I could escape to the past. Then I thought about Mom and Dad. I hoped they’d come get me from the 1890s if there weren’t a war. I didn’t want them to die. I didn’t want anyone to die. I really wanted there to be a future.

Mr. Mahoney and I walked past the train station and out onto the empty platform. He looked over his shoulder to be sure no one was around. “Are you ready?” He took my hands, squeezed them, and then he let go. “It’s the right time and place! Go on back, Gracie!”

At first, I thought nothing had happened, except then it wasn’t evening anymore. It was morning—and certainly not the 1890s. Nobody named Augustus introduced himself to me.

Dad always told me that if you get confused when you Travel, you should always look at what kind of lights there are in buildings and what clothing people have on to help place yourself. But what I saw only confused me more.

A freezing wind came off the river and cut right through my corduroy jacket. People in puffy grey and brown overcoats stood in clumps, staring at what I first thought were really tiny transistor radios. I learned that same day those things are called smart phones. I’d missed the 1890s by over a hundred years—and in the wrong direction.

A sleek, silvery train roared into the station from the north and everyone got on it but me. Bingo, the future! I’d just broken one of the biggest Rules there is.

Mario Andretti on Balancing Life & Writing

I grew up in a racing family. As a kid I remember Saturday nights watching Sprint Cars race on the 1/3 mile clay track at Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. “Pop” — my dad’s dad — built race cars with his four boys and they grew up traveling around the dirt tracks and state fairs of the upper Midwest

Of course, the “Big Show” was the Indianapolis 500. And it wasn’t just a Memorial Day thing. Weekends in May were spent watching time trials and qualification runs. And one of the big stars of the Brickyard was Mario Andretti, the only driver ever to win the Indianapolis 500 (1969), Daytona 500 (1967) and the Formula One World Championship, and one of only two drivers ever to have won a race in the NASCAR Cup Series, Formula One, and an Indianapolis 500. He’s #5 on my personal list of favorite drivers. (Click Here)

Okay…so what in the world does this have to do with writing and life and stuff?

Well, Andretti’s racing motto was:

“If everything seems under control, you’re not going fast enough.”

There is no balance to life and work. Not for me.

Maybe it would be nice to have an calm, orderly parade lap of a life, where all the competing elements of your world are all lined up in a perfect grid, rolling around the track at a leisurely pace…but, no. That actually sounds kind of boring.

I’ve got a gazillion things going on and, honestly, sometimes I spin out of control. Sometimes life and writing touch wheels and there’s a huge pileup coming out of turn four just when I’m heading for the finish line.

It is dangerous, because life and work don’t always play nice together. They’re both competing to win.

But every once in a while…it all comes together and you get to the checkered flag and it’s amazing. You even surprise yourself.

Robert Frost said:

“No surprise for the writer, no surprise for the reader.”

Give me the mayhem of green flag racing.

“She was one in a million…and the day I met her I should have bought a lottery ticket instead.”

As he investigates, the ex-Navy SEAL crosses swords with Helena’s step-brother, the Pentagon’s Highlands Forum, and an All-Star bad guy somebody has hired to stop him. When Griff finds himself on the wrong side of an arrest warrant he wonders: Is he a player or being played?

She was one in a million…and the day I met her I should have bought a lottery ticket instead.

Blonde, slim and well-built, of course, her eyes were darkly blue which, when unsheathed from behind her Jackie Ohhs, glinted like gun metal at twilight.

I noticed when we first met.

I ignored it after the first time we made love.

I caught it again as she testified against me.

I suppose, I’ll just never learn.

The Eclectic Review

The courtroom action is excellent, trimmed to the most gripping parts of the trial, with plenty of emotional impact…a fairly realistic portrayal of the way small-town US society works…a fast-moving story with plenty of dramatic moments, and a big twist in the final pages.

Bruntfield, New Jersey, just another banal town in a part of the country that nobody thinks about, was about to become famous; or rather, more aptly put, infamous. People sauntered past lackluster shops unaware that in a few days, the lackadaisical streets would bear the rabid frustrations that divided the nation; a pus-like bitterness that was held in check by the demands of everyday survival and the distractions offered by obsessive consumerism and brazen media.

Some would inevitably blame the cascade of events on the weather, since the origins could be found on a hot summer day in 2006. Sure, just about all summer days are hot, but this one was close to the record, and humid to boot. By the end of July, the Northeast coast was suffering under a sweltering heat wave. Despite the humidity, no one could remember the last time it had rained. A hundred-year drought was predicted, they’d said.

Bruntfield, among the many places under this curse, had its water supply so severely depressed that the city authorities were forced to impose water rationing. As if that wasn’t enough, the excessive load on air conditioners led to incessant brownouts. With the weather nothing less than insufferable, suffocating, oppressive, even provoking, tempers flared along with the temperature. But the local situation, as bad as it was, was about to get worse.

When the Muse (Thankfully) Takes Control

Thank you for hosting me today on this stint of my Virtual Book Tour, promoting the new anthology from DCL Publications – Falling for You!

My story inclusion is called ‘My Name is Not Cupid’ and it follows an angel named Zeretha, who has been stripped of her powers and wings and sent to earth by God for one final assignment – to unite a Hollywood actor with the love of his life, and to prove the angel worthy of reclaiming her wings and abilities. Obviously, the title of the story is taken from the premise, and it leads into a hilarious romantic comedy with plenty of heart and soul.

This tale is incredibly different from my inclusions in the last two DCL anthologies. In Queens of Hearts, I told the story about a young gay man who won the title of Top Drag Queen, which made him question his life’s choices and seek out ways to become his happiest him. In the anthology The Greatest Gift of All, I shared the story about a young business woman in NYC who embarrasses herself in front of a good-looking guy in her work place and disappears to Tennessee to avoid him and New York’s winter snow – only for both obstacles to follow her home.
Aside from keeping the themes of comedy and romance prevalent in my work, everything I write takes on a different feel with different types of characters – all dependant on what Muse has visited me at that time. My muses know I write ‘splice of life’ fiction, and they have delivered some really fun, unusual, and intriguing characters to me so that I can share their stories.

The muses seem to know what they’re doing with me, and they guide my hand despite where my brain wants to take the story. For instance, Zeretha wasn’t originally set to go to Hollywood to complete her assignment. The angel was instead intended to quickly foil her last assignment and then try to ‘trick’ her way back into Heaven. Apparently, that wasn’t the story the muses wanted me to write, so instead of ‘Hijacking Heaven,’ we got ‘My Name is Not Cupid.’ Had the original idea came to fruition, we never would have gotten Mildred and Milton – a hilarious elderly couple and two of my most adored characters yet. Without them, I don’t think this story would have been nearly as funny and heart-warming as it is. My Muse new exactly what this story needed, and they guided my hand from what I thought I was creating to what was actually created.

And I couldn’t be happier.

This Christmas season, I will take my readers back to Nashville with my first solo release – A Country Christmas Kiss. Get ready for cowboys, country music, and warm logs burning in the fireplace. The muses delivered this story to me early in the summer, and I’m super excited to share it with my fans. It is about a female country singer who is at the top of her career, but when Christmas arrives, she realizes that her career has become her life, and all she really wants is someone to spend the holiday with. Will a little Christmas magic happen, allowing the country singer to find her happiness? Well… I’m all about the happy! But to believe it and to feel it, you must read it.

One thing is certain about my muses – as long as I trust them, they don’t lead me wrong. I trust them to help me deliver my best work, and I’m so thankful for them. I’ve heard rumors of muses abandoning their authors in the past. So far, I’ve been fortunate, and I hope I stay that way. Maybe if I bribe my muses with fresh baked cookies, they’ll keep hanging around… Do bribes work on muses?

I’d like to extend thanks to my fellow authors in the Falling for You anthology – Adesanya and Jae El Foster. We make quite a team, as this anthology demonstrates. Thanks also to our editor Jean Watkins, whom we drove crazy in the process, and to publisher DCL and promotional vixens Goddess Fish Promotions for making this book tour happen. Thank you also, Long and Short Reviews, for including us. It takes a team to make something like this – the book and the tour – come together, so… thank you!

Her powers… she hadn’t tried her powers since landing here. Perhaps, she thought, they hadn’t been stripped after all. Crouching low, she began to run, and with a leap, she jumped into the air to fly. Instantly, she fell back down to the ground.

Okay. She couldn’t fly anymore. Perhaps she could still teleport. She looked at a tree across the lake and placed her focus on it. Then, with the tilt of the head that had always worked before, she attempted to materialize beside it. Yet, no matter how much she focused, she could not teleport.

Immortality was another trait that all angels shared, and so Zeretha began to climb the tallest tree she could find, getting about a third of the way up it. Then, she crawled out onto a sturdy branch and stood up straight on it. Without a second thought about it, she jumped from the tree and fell down hard to the ground.

It hurt like hell. She had a gash on her leg from a sharp rock and when she tried to stand, she felt the bone snap. In the worst pain she’d ever known, she collapsed back down to the ground.

“This is not funny!” she screamed through bleary eyes as she once again looked to the heavens. “I did not deserve this!”

“You broke your own leg,” she heard a voice tell her. “God didn’t make you jump from that tree.”

Looking over, she saw Titus – one of God’s impish assistants. Dressed in a suit and tie, he held a clipboard and made notes as he looked Zeretha over through the lenses of his glasses.

“You…” Zeretha groaned, and for a moment, she thought she’d rather deal with the pain of the broken ankle than with Titus.

“Yep, me… I’ve worked my entire existence trying to move up the ranks, and I get stuck following you around on Earth.” The tone of his voice was droll and he held a resting bitch face. “You think you’ve got it bad? You don’t have to follow you.”

“Then go home,” she told him, holding her ankle with both hands. “I’d rather deal with this than deal with you.”

“Okay,” he said, adding more notes to his clipboard. “Fine. But with that ankle, you won’t make it ten feet. Come morning, you’ll be breakfast for the bears.”

“Bears?”

“Big ones.”

Zeretha sighed and shook her head. The last thing she wanted was Titus’s help. He was a brown-nosing suck-up to God, and if she was to be perfectly honest, she detested him. He made the life of angels so much harder than it should have been. He was the one that noted failed good deeds, shirking duties, and anything else that could have caused angels to lose their wings.

The making of a Southern fiction writer

I would define my preferred genre as southern fiction. I have been influenced by writers such as Flannery O’Connor, Pat Conroy and Ferrol Sams to name a few whose activity spans a reasonable period of time. I find my place in the southern United States, as I was born in Georgia. In addition, my experience in life attaches its formative origins within that particular geography and about and around the lives that populate that land. I would say, at least for myself, that I find a similarity with many of the Native Americans with whom I have become acquainted over my lifetime. Regarding our discussions, the land upon which they were born and within which they have known their heritage is regarded as a spiritual force in their lives. I find this same feeling to be present in me, as well. Although I have lived the last thirty years in North Carolina, each and every time I return to my homeland in the state of Georgia I feel the enveloping warmth of a sense that I would call, home. To be more precise, when I cross the bridge that spans Lake Hartwell on Interstate 85 headed south, I feel the embrace of familiarity and welcome. I suppose that in my case, and perhaps, my recognized and secret colleagues, of this particular writing genre, must feel this same attachment to the land upon which we were born and raised. Out of that foundation I can write my stories.

I also like to think that I am a fairly well-read and well-traveled gentleman. I try to incorporate my extended experience with the world with my knowledge and imagination of a local color. I blend trauma and tragedy with happiness and joy. I can speak the language of the city and the dialect of the country. I can find a clever story through the tending of my mother’s garden. I can develop compelling scenery from a Saturday float upon one of our southern rivers. I can devise struggles and suffering around a holiday dinner. I can pose questions about faith in the midst of a Sunday sermon. And, in all those scenarios and many others, I can develop characters that are engaging, and inspiring in whatever emotional capacity that flows within the scene. All those notions compose my tool bag for writing in the genre and flair of my secret mentors. However, in answer to the question posed above, the strongest attraction to this preferred genre is the southern human character, with whom I am familiar, to whom I am loyal and dedicated, and about whom my audience may relate with compassion, excitement, misery, praise, disgust, or any other emotional component that is interesting, fascinating and compelling.

Golf, love, life—Jack Weatherlow is more than familiar with all three. Is life a series of coincidences or is it linked by a greater thread? Returning from the brink of destruction, Jack lets his participation in recovery, his work at the hotel, and his close relationship with his wife, Samantha, guide him through some of life’s most important questions and lessons. What do we do when opportunity knocks at our door? Is it fate that brings us together with those we love most? What constitutes a family and what obligations do we have to those around us? Through his relationships and experiences on and off the green, Jack discovers many of life’s lucky chances.

We were alone that day. She was already in place when I arrived. Sam turned when I entered. She spun around quickly, startled by my entrance. I had apparently interrupted some secret contemplation. She gave a little jerk with her head. She blew smoke into the air, while throwing her hair out of her eyes. We shared a brief, but natural, greeting as I entered the steamy, chlorine-scented room. I remember a glinting instant of eye contact, which remained in place for a moment longer than might be expected. The only sound filling the room was the methodical whirring of the machines.

When I first saw her, I recall feeling flushed by a sense of confusion, or a nervous anxiety. I became inextricably distracted. I was struck stupid, all of a sudden. I couldn’t focus on my work. I fumbled with simple tasks that I had executed quite proficiently for the better part of my life. I was no stranger to laundry duties, but in those few moments, i appeared dumbfounded by the simple chore of loading a washer. I had trouble putting a quarter in the machine. I cast the very real appearance of someone who needed help, and Samantha took the opportunity to lend a hand. Clumsy male struggling with laundry duty, adept female coming to the rescue; the scene seems ludicrously formulaic and fraudulent, but it is nonetheless our story.

About the Author Summer is in full swing – folks are hitting the golf course by day, and reflecting on life as the sunsets go later into the evening. Courting the Muse
The Muse arrives when I turn out the light,
And if I am lucky stays through the night.
She often sticks around until it is tomorrow,
Leaving a stream of words for me to borrow.
The muse is a fleeting lady. Although she’s forever late to the party and the first to leave, I never bar her entrance. Still, the more I struggle to catch her, the more she eludes me. A surefire way to scare her off is to overthink her, but for the sake of this blog, I’ll try to pin her down.

The best time to court the muse is just before drifting off to sleep. She’s great at jumping from one dream and landing in another. She’s quite the pest when she has a mind, leaving me no choice but to get up and write. After all that interrupted sleep and worn to a frazzle, I find the tease has left me flat.

Music is the best bait for trapping the muse. She’s partial to groups like the Cocteau Twins, a little Bossa Nova, and anything Billie Eilish. She’s been known to rock out to Jagger and to rap with Eminem. It’s raw emotions that attract her. The dark, theatric In the Nursery lured her into showing up for a Gothic Horror. Too much of a good thing, though, on any given day, causes her to drop in her tracks. There is such a thing as playing a song to death.
To tempt the muse back to the land of the living is to let her get her teeth on some juicy research. The more exploration, the merrier she dances. Fact is, she’s kept me up for hours on end. All that food for thought makes her shine, makes her gleam. The trick is to know when to stop. Too much hanging out with her makes me forget to start writing. Then neither of us wins.

When I can’t find the muse for any length of time, I resort to drastic measures. I read lots of poetry, draw pictures, and even write by hand. I search my brain for the right word to jar the muse back into existence. Sleep-deprived, I fall into bed. Just when I think I’ll never see her again, I awake refreshed. Low and behold, there she is in all finery, waiting for me with strong coffee and a swift kick into action. My muse is back!

“Don’t you feel the sun’s energy balancing and healing you?”

What Madison felt was Brandon’s body heat radiating through her, tightening her muscles, skimming up her spine. That kind of warmth should come with a warning— exposure might cause side effects. Maybe she could have blamed it on chemistry or like attracting like— called it a lethal injection. She was dying for want of him.

She managed to say, “I see a halo around the sun.”

“Feel it vibrate?” he asked, turning to look at her.

Somehow, she didn’t think watching the sky had anything to do with it. The heat had gathered at the sweet place between her legs— another side effect of her being close to him. If this didn’t end up in a kiss, she didn’t think she’d be able to bear it.

Drawing in a long shaky breath, she said, “I do feel the vibration.” Oh, did she!

“Being out in the middle of nature, with the birds and the sea creatures, it does something to a person, don’t you think?”

“Amen to Mother Earth,” she said dreamily.

“There’s harmony in the sounds.” His breath seemed to have caught in his throat.

“Yes, a more beautiful melody could not exist.”

“Do you feel your eyes blur? It’s the sun cleansing you.”

Cleansing? Try heating up as if some crazy so-and-so had switched on the gas.

She moaned, “My eyes have become pools of marvel.” No, that wasn’t right. They were pools of longing, no mistaking.”

The Hardest Part of Writing by Sara Ohlin – Guest Blog and Giveaway

The hardest part about writing is…

Gah! How do I choose? It’s a hard job, but also, SO MUCH FUN!

The hardest part about writing is making myself write routinely. I’m lucky, I can write at least five days a week as soon as my kids go to school, and sometimes I sneak time on the weekends. But I have to make myself. Butt in chair, social media off, fingers to keyboard, and go! I try to set goals for myself each morning. Sometimes it’s word count. Other times it’s getting one scene right, even if it’s a short scene. Some days it’s, “No, you cannot get up and get more coffee until you hit 500 words.” Holding coffee ransom usually does the trick for me.

The hardest part about writing is listening to all the great advice out there, then knowing what to follow and what to leave behind.

The hardest part about being a writer is learning how to take critique, then figuring out what critique is helpful and, again, what to leave behind. I write creative non-fiction as well. Often it’s about grief and PTSD. A lovely, smart writer once told me my voice was too sad. I thanked her, but knew for the essays she was referring to, the sad voice was important. And it was my voice. Many writers struggle for years to find their voice. Don’t let anyone change your voice.

The hardest part about writing is the loneliness. Over the years I have connected with wonderful critique groups, in-person and online writing partners and other book lovers. I think this is a necessary part of being a great writer, and yet, ultimately, again as writers we have to write by ourselves, even if we’re in a café full of people. We have to do the work.

And sometimes the hardest part about writing is having all these ideas in our heads and not enough time to write.
The writing life is full of dichotomies. It can break your heart and put it back together again in the same day. Ha! Just like a good romance!

Thank you so, so much for hosting me on your blog, Long and Short Reviews!!

What’s a sexy rancher to do when an uptight accountant falls into his lap?

Already reeling at having inherited the family farm on his father’s death, photojournalist Cruz Brockman returns home to the Oregon town of Graciella to receive another blow—accountant Miranda Jenks is there to audit the books because the IRS suspect his late father of tax fraud. To their astonishment, sparks fly between the passionate Cruz and the career-focused Miranda upon first meeting, and the heat rises with every encounter.

Threatened with losing everything his family has worked for, Cruz has no choice but to be completely open with the uptight Miranda, something that doesn’t come easily to him, just as focusing on her own needs is foreign to her. She’s buried her own desires all her life, but the longer she spends with the captivating rancher, the more she wants to dive into a passionate affair with him.

An intense, toe-curling physical connection is one thing, but exposing their hearts is another. As Miranda finishes her audit and the clock counts down to her leaving, can the reluctant rancher and the shy accountant conquer their fears and fight for their love?

“I’ll need all the records your father kept. Bills paid, bills due, revenue, assets, expenses, wages, tax forms from the past few years, receipts, investments.” She drew him out of his thoughts with her long list of demands.

Cruz looked around at the piles of paperwork covering the desk. “Most of it is here somewhere, but it’s a mess at the moment, a mess I’ve been trying to sort through. How about if we begin in the morning? That will give me some time to get things more organized for you.”

“Certainly.”

Damn! The force of that word breathed at him like a dragon’s fire. He could almost see the inner turmoil as she fought the need to roll her eyes at his incompetence. “But time isn’t something you have a lot of, Mr. Brockman. I’m sure you’re aware of that.”

“I realize the importance of this, Ms. Jenks, but it’s not exactly life or death now, is it?” He grinned at her again, trying to prod some emotion out of her. At the least he wished she’d relax. At the most he wanted to see her smile again. He liked the way it softened her face, gave her a bit of mystery, as though she was holding a special secret or two. He’d even take the fierce side of her—it showed her strength.

“That depends on how you feel about the IRS shutting you down for good.”

“What the hell’s that supposed to mean?” he demanded.
