ALL SHE WANTS IS HER OWN HOME

Miss Felicity Chambers is the new teacher of piano and deportment at Miss Manville’s Academy for Superior Girls. There is no reason a duke should contact her. There is certainly no reason she should marry his son. But that is evidently what the duke wants. Felicity should be delighted. But the orphaned schoolteacher has long since stopped believing in fairy tales. If only the duke’s son weren’t so compelling…

ALL HE WANTS IS THIS HOME

Lord Flint Bracken knows just what is behind the duke’s command, and it isn’t an attempt to secure a happily-ever-after for his son. The proposal is one of the duke’s schemes. Flint has no choice but to cooperate, though, or he risks more than his home. He risks national security. So court a penniless schoolteacher he must. He should be furious. But Felicity Chambers isn’t at all what he expected. She might very well be what he wants…

It was Miss Felicity Chambers’ considered opinion that more time needed to be spent cleaning beneath beds. She came to this conclusion when the urge to sneeze overtook her as she crouched under the bed of her host, her heart pounding and her eyes squeezed shut.

“You haven’t seen her?” a voice rumbled above her.

“I’ve been looking for you,” answered the sultry tones of a woman.

A very sultry woman. Felicity wished she had the knack for sounding so interesting, rather like she thought a siren might sound when calling sailors to their doom. Sadly, she merely sounded like the new teacher of piano and deportment at Miss Manville’s Academy for Superior Girls she was. Well, that she had been before the surprise correspondence from the man who was standing four feet from her twitching nose. Lord Flint Bracken.

Flint, Felicity thought with a scowl. What kind of self-respecting duke named his son after quartz? Shouldn’t his name be Reginald, or Cyril? But then, from the sound of his voice, she doubted very much that he resembled a Cyril of any kind.

“It was my father’s request,” he was saying, sounding bored. “Bring the chit here and tell her of the bequest.”

Felicity almost bumped her head on the underside of the bed. Bequest? Her eyes popped open. What was he talking about?

What are you waiting for?

Everyone has endured the endless traffic light, the queue that goes nowhere, the elevator music piped through the phone line. But what of those periods in your life when everything seems on hold? When you can’t do the next thing in your professional or personal life because you can’t get to it?

Waiting—be it for health, a life partner, a child, a job—can be an agony. The persistently unrealized goal feels like an endless road. And hope’s constant deferment can be exhausting. A firm answer against the thing you’re hoping for—”no”—might be easier than this constant lack of closure. It might be easier to give it up.

But what if waiting means to be something else? Waiting doesn’t have to mean idleness. Our prolonged state of need might teach us to look beyond the desired goal to something infinitely better. We find lessons on this throughout the Bible and, if we are paying attention, in our own lives.

Rather than fostering frustration, periods of waiting might have great truths to tell us. It might show us that hope is worthwhile. Waiting might even be a gift in and of itself.

Enjoy an Excerpt

The first lesson of waiting is that we are on the outside. Like the boy on the sideline; like the not-engaged friend who pins wedding gowns on Pinterest; like me squinting for lines that fail to emerge on the pregnancy test; none of us–whether or not we are actively waiting– is where we want to be. This might not seem true, of course. This actually might seem patently untrue. You might be happily ensconced in a loving family, a marriage, a tight-knit circle of friends. You might belong to a country club or a sorority, a church, a civic group.

But, like that of all who wait, the human condition is actually a condition of being on the outside, an unhappy state that writers and poets have noticed since time out of mind. It’s true of all of us, but we manage to obscure it from ourselves with all manner of distraction: accumulated wealth and possessions, meaningful or frivolous activity, even what is truly good and beautiful.

The problem is that you can’t contend with something if you simultaneously ignore it. And the fact of our exile–the fundamental state of all human existence–is not going away.

Waiting can teach us this.

“I’m not.” She glared at his hand holding her prisoner and he loosened his hold, but didn’t release her.

“You are. You’re used to winding men around your little finger, slaying them with your smile, and having them trot after you like Thumper trots after me.”

“That’s an interesting image you’ve dreamed up, Marshal, but you know absolutely nothing about me.”

“That’s true.” His tone was hushed, soft as a feather. “But I’d like to know you. Very much.” He let her go; his fingertips trailing down her dress sleeve.

Mesmerized by his lips forming the words, she didn’t move. The flash of his teeth against his lower lip when he’d said “very” and the attractive pucker of them when he’d said “much” held her prisoner. She wanted to know the feel of his mouth on hers. Very. Much. Without allowing herself another second to reconsider, she rested a hand on his solid chest to steady herself and rose on tiptoes. She laid her mouth against his in a quick, hard kiss. She heard the quick intake of his breath, felt his lips part in surprise, and his heart kick against her palm.

Five Southern women wage a hilarious war against the ageism problems of one of their deep-in-trouble sisters using their improbable friendships, evil-genius schemes, oh-so-numerous cocktails, and a shared passion for good gumbo.

When southern artist, Judith Lafferty, loses her long-time, prestigious museum job to a much younger man, she finds herself devastated, alone in her sixties, and on the brink of financial disaster. Enter the incomparable Gumbeaux Sistahs, who deliver day-old coffee to her front door as a ploy, then go on to kidnap her, feed her excellent gumbo, and come up with outrageous solutions to her problems. Their motives are just good excuses to drink wine, have a great time, argue over whose mother makes the best gumbo, and, most of all, help a sister out. Ageism, dangerous boyfriends, deep loneliness, and any other challenges that can face the over fifty crowd don’t stand a chance against these five resourceful ladies. The Gumbeaux Sistahs is a heart-warming, smart story of friendship and unexpected shenanigans that you do not want to miss.

Judith Lafferty had never been a violent person, but it felt like it might be a good day to start. It was a little after ten o’clock on Monday morning, and she felt a steadily rising derangement as she waited, third in line, at St. John’s Coffeehouse. The cafe was crowded with late morning caffeine seekers. The music from the overhead speakers was bouncy, the weather was glorious, the baristas were smiling, and Judith was seething. Normally she would be bouncing right along to the music in the popular café and eyeing the lemon bars in the glass case. Not today. Today, Judith would have enjoyed flinging one of the lemon bars across the room like a frisbee. Or maybe she could just punch something. Yes, she would very much like to punch something — anything at all. The life-sized, cardboard sign near the front counter of a smiling man overly enjoying his bag of coffee beans seemed a tempting target. She balled her fist and considered it. His young, smiling face reminded her of the man responsible for her current mood. If she truly believed punching the fake-smile on the cardboard figure would somehow make her feel better, she would flatten him. But she did not think anything could help right now.

The roses grow in such a fashion that they dance with the breeze and the aroma in the garden is what love would smell like if there were such a scent associated with it. There are thousands of vibrant colored roses up and down in rows and they do not look like typical rose bushes. The stems of the roses are different, stronger, and able to uphold the bud. Almost any color that can be thought of is here, including purple, red, blue, yellow, rainbow, black, turquoise, white, pink, orange, two and three tone colors, and a bright red-orange sparkling rose. “Who owns this place?” Marvin asks.

“There’s a plaque with the owner’s name on it over here,” Talie says leading the way.

The memorial reads: Jonathan Rutherford and Ellen Campanilli Rutherford established “Roses of the Garden” in 1913.

“Wow,” Marvin says, “They must have some secret formula regarding horticulture because I’ve never seen such roses!”

Why I Became a Writer/My Journey to Publication by C.C. Bolick – Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. One randomly chosen winner via rafflecopter will win a $50 Amazon/BN.com gift card. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Why I Became a Writer/My Journey to Publication

As a teen, I was the misfit of every conversation. I didn’t know how to engage people and had issues making and keeping friends. Although I made an A in almost every class, the idea of getting up and going to school scared me, for many reasons. There were bullies at school… drugs, weapons, gangs, and that was all in a small-town school. I cringe to think of what went on in the larger schools.

This was before the Internet was widely used. Yes, we had all those horrible things before the Internet! Without this great escape to digital media, games, and information, I built my own worlds. When the books I read disappointed me (this was the nineties, before there was a YA section overflowing with books like Twilight), I turned to making my own stories. I’d dream up a new world to disappear into whenever I could block out the pain of real life.

I soon found keeping my daydreaming habit a secret wasn’t easy. I never told a single soul in that high school out of fear someone might think I was certifiable.

At times, I wondered if I could be.

My notebooks burst with characters, but I didn’t have the patience to complete a full story. I still read almost anything I could get my hands on, but I began to study the pages of each book and with each ‘the end’ came my own thoughts on how the story should have ended. In my mind, I could rewrite the characters to be the people I imagined them. During this time, I also spent a great deal of time drawing charcoal sketches of anything I imagined.
At twenty-nine, I finally started my first book – the first story I always promised myself I’d write. After struggling for two years, I wrote three other books and then came back to finish the first. I know people often say you should hide the first book in a dark drawer for eternity.

But I’d made myself a promise, for better or worse.

As a child, the family joke of me being adopted always resonated with my deep need to belong. I wasn’t adopted (at least I don’t think so), but I told myself and anyone who would listen that one day I’d write a book about a girl who is. She’d be special in many ways I wasn’t while exploring the questions that came with not knowing what happened to her parents.

At thirty-six, after the death of my grandmother, I decided life was shorter than I’d ever realized. It was time to publish and I didn’t want to go the route of a decade of rejection letters from agents. I’d heard the horror stories from other authors. I wasn’t looking to make a fortune on writing – just wanted to reach people.

So, I researched what it would take to self-publish a book. As an engineer, I wanted to make a plan and set reasonable goals, but I also worked a full-time job. By day, I programmed robots and PLCs in a manufacturing plant. By night, I turned my first book into a five-book series.

I didn’t care how many books sold. At the time, I believed that if one person in the world discovered my stories and enjoyed, I’d accomplished my goal. I’d published a book with the intent to reach people. Now I had.

It took seven years to prepare my first book for publication. It took four months for the second and three for the third. After realizing people were reading my books and giving honest feedback, I kept going. My latest book, Fear Justice, is my ninth.

After completing the first series of books, I wrote a spin-off series with some of the same characters. At the end of the spin-off, I connected the two series. My third series, The Fear Chronicles, also has connections to the other books, but I wrote Fear Justice so that anyone could enjoy the story without having read my other books.

Seventeen-year-old Rena Mason counts the days until she can leave for college. Every night her father drinks himself to sleep, leaving her to care for her younger brother. When her father is kidnapped by terrorists, her dreams of freedom become a nightmare.

Stunned that her father has a history with these terrorists, Rena knows she must run or be their next victim. She learns the tough guy at school has a reason to look after her – he’s working for a government agency with the same goal as the terrorists: find a woman who disappeared eighteen years ago. Time is running out since only this woman’s special gift can save the world from a looming nuclear attack.

Rena can’t trust anyone, especially not the stone-cold agent she’s falling for. Can they save the world before Rena’s feelings trap her in an agent’s fight for justice?

Fear Justice contains elements of fantasy, sci-fi, and paranormal, with a clean romance. It’s the first book in an exciting new series called The Fear Chronicles.

He smiled and held out a hand. “I’m Tony and no, I’ve never thought of myself as a nice guy.”

Staring at his outstretched hand, I hesitated. “Rena.”

Tony moved his hand closer and his eyes took on a look of intensity, as if daring me to shake his hand.

“What’s with the gloves?” I asked.

“Skin allergies. What’s with the hesitation?”

“Hesitation?” With defiance, I reached forward. “I’m not afraid of you.”

“What are you afraid of?”

As his hand gripped mine, my breathing sped and I fought to control my voice. Our skin wasn’t even touching. Hiding my feelings with Robbie had been easy, but this was… weird. “Why are you worried about who I date? You don’t even know me.”

“I know your name is Rena Mason. We’ve got physics together.”

A twinge of guilt caught me off-guard. “I haven’t noticed you before.”

“My dad taught me to blend in with my surroundings, like camouflage.”

“He was a hunter?”

“Not exactly, but he did teach me how to shoot before he left.”

“Left?” The instant his words were out, I felt a connection to him. It was a sadness that welled from deep inside, the knowledge that we were alike in a terrible way.

US Colony Agent Brice O’ Rourke is traumatised as a child when half the world disappears as waters rose because of climate change and when North Korea unleashed sentient human like droid soldiers to conquer lands for their hungry people.

When the US Congress passed laws allowing the Homo Roboticus Sollus and Aequilavum programs, Brice gains Ira, a sister, and meets a fellow droid agent Lee Jae Sung who saves her life during a mission.

As a new President wins on an anti-robotist, authoritarian stance vowing a pre-machine existence, will Brice defy her own government and risk her life to save loved ones from extinction?

“Homo Roboticus is a richly-imagined cautionary tale of a future earth in which long-feared climate disaster has actually happened, the world’s population is permanently at war, and robots have become almost more human than their creators.” –Susan Krawitz, author of Viva, Rose!, a Sydney Taylor Honor winner, National Jewish Book Award debut fiction finalist, and Spur Award finalist

As the small hand of the clock hit six, Brice turned to the window and saw a wave of metallic spike-droids rise from the ground outside. She counted backwards from ten, and when she reached zero, the spikes bloomed multi-layered metal petals and started turning in different directions. They looked like dancers performing ballet steps, she thought with amusement; one executing a deep plié to measure the temperature of the soil; another, a hundred pirouettes to record the ferocity of the wind. These were once tasks both her father and grandfather were responsible for, but for some time now, no human had been allowed outside the tundra and these droids had done most of the scientific work.

There was a sound behind her – an excited screech, and Brice turned away from the window. Eilish was jumping up and down as she did every day when the spike-droids emerged.

“Be careful, Eilish!” she said. “Come and sit beside me,” and she patted the broad windowsill she was perched upon. Eilish was the same size as she was and looked her exact age, which was six. She was wearing the same pajamas, pink with flowers. She patted down a few stray hairs sticking out on Eilish’s head, then checked her left leg. Made of glassinex, it had broken two weeks before, when she fell from the same windowsill. “If you break another leg, we’re in trouble,” she warned Eilish. “There are no spare parts coming to this side of the world any time soon. Which is a pain in the behind, because that’s what you’ll have to walk on if you break your other leg, so hobble carefully!” And then she laughed. Eilish grinned, and shook her head.

Fifteen years I’ve been dreaming this scene.

I’m treading water, naked save for a sheen of oil, clinging to a cube of crushed plastic bottles. The sun is a burning weight against my brow. The Hive and its lesser brethren are miles behind, the mainland just a rumor ahead. The Gulf surrounds me. A churning sea of debris and rotted kelp, it stretches to the horizons, a heat haze glazing its fetid surface.

I’m going to die out here. I know it, the fish and the gulls are sure of it, the tiny crabs in my hair consider it a foregone conclusion. If only Kalana would get the hint too. She’s crouched atop a net filled with 4-liter milk jugs, screaming at me to keep struggling. Or I think she is, anyway. My submerged ears hear only the ocean’s monotonous voice, imagination transforming it into the whispers of our drowned companions.

This dream is based on a memory. In real life, Kalana climbs down and pulls me bodily from the water. And together, jumping, crawling and swimming by turns, we cross the floating garbage dump that separates the Hive from Opacity. The first acolytes ever to escape the Designer’s service. But in the world my mind likes to recreate, she doesn’t bother. After screaming herself hoarse, she makes a gesture of negation and vanishes, leaving me to sink into the abyss to the taste of a lover’s disappointment.

Fifteen years is a very long time.

Recently widowed after twenty years of marriage, Frances Lehman is only just tasting the freedom and opportunity that her Promise Lodge friends enjoy. So she’s not about to be pressured into marriage by her widowed brother-in-law, even if she and her daughter have no real means of support. Much more promising is her new friendship with Preacher Marlin Kurtz, though their respective families don’t see their relationship as proper . . .

When Frances suffers a serious injury, she’s determined to prove she can recover—and remain independent—without burdening Marlin. Now, with his steadfast belief in real love tested, Marlin’s hope is that Promise Lodge’s irrepressible residents can help him restore Frances’s joy—and that faith will show them a way to turn their fragile second chance into a blessed and abiding future together.

And don’t miss the first three books in the Promise Lodge series!

Frances shaded her eyes with her hand, enthralled with what she saw. “It doesn’t seem like you and I have walked such a long distance, yet from here, the lodge and our homes look like part of a toy village.”

“We’ve come a long way,” Marlin remarked softly. “I’m glad you’ve walked with me, Frances. Our community has taken on even more of a glow because I’m seeing it through your eyes.”

The tone of his voice made Frances’s pulse thrum with an unusual sense of energy, as though the preacher had something on his mind besides the view.

We’ve come a long way.

Allen treasured Phoebe’s rapt expression and the closeness of her slender body as she leaned against him. He’d given her a gift by showing her Promise Lodge from this hilltop vantage point.

“What about that parcel of land behind the Lehman places?” she asked dreamily. “We’d have a beautiful view of the lake. What do you think, Allen? Should I ask Mamm if I can have it?”

Allen’s throat closed with a sudden case of nerves. He eased away from her, pretending to look at something near the lodge so she wouldn’t see how she’d startled him. Their relationship, which had felt so comfortable over the past week, now gave him the sensation that an invisible halter had been fastened around his head—and that Phoebe was holding the lead rope.

What Kind of Writer am I? by Rosemary J. Kind – Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Rosemary J. Kind will be awarding a $30 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

What kind of writer am I?

I’m a ‘holic’ writer. I’m addicted. I neither want to stop myself nor have the willpower to succeed if I did. That last part is saying something, as I have an awful lot of willpower.

Oddly, and probably a sign of my age, I think best with a pen or pencil in my hand. I then tend to put it down to type on a keyboard, as I can type much more clearly than I can write. There is nothing worse than committing the finest prose to paper, only to find you can’t actually read a word of it and the idea has gone.

I have many of the related addictions which you tend to find in writers. I have nurtured some of those since childhood. I’m a bookaholic, stationaryaholic, notebookaholic and penaholic to name just a few. It’s amazing how many of those traits writers share and it is very much like going to a support group when you get together with other writers and all start to confess. You sit around in a circle saying things like ‘I bought three beautifully bound blank notebooks I didn’t need last week. One of them has the most wonderful metal clasp and another has no less than three ribbons to mark your place.’ You cannot imagine how relieved I was to find there are even people out there who have more unopened fancy notebooks than I have.

I’m like a child in a sweet shop when it comes to choosing stationary. It’s no coincidence that I ran the stationary shop when I was in the sixth form at school – being able to buy and sell stationary without committing my own money was like being fed an unending line of caramel centred chocolates without getting fat. (Did I mention the chocolate and coffee addictions?)

What is more important than the addictions themselves, is the qualities that obsessive tendency brings to my work. I tend to be thorough, determined and keen to make sure that my books will really meet the needs and hopes of the reader. Nothing makes me happier than drawing an emotional reaction. If I can make readers laugh, cry, shout – for the right reasons, then I have achieved something.

I work long hours and am unhappy when, for any reason, I can’t spend time writing. Writing grounds me. If there is no time to write, then there is no time to be me and it doesn’t take long for me to become unhappy.

I love being a writer. If I can write books that are respected and which readers enjoy and recommend to their friends then I will be the happiest writer in the world.

From fleeing the Irish Potato Famine, to losing his parents on the ship to New York, seven-year-old Daniel Flynn knows about adversity. As Daniel sings the songs of home to earn pennies for food, pick-pocket Thomas Reilly becomes his ally and friend, until he too is cast out onto the street.

A destitute refugee in a foreign land, Daniel, together with Thomas and his sister Molly, are swept up by the Orphan Train Movement to find better lives with families across America. For Daniel will the dream prove elusive?

How strong are bonds of loyalty when everything is at stake?

At the end of the block, the buildings clambered over the tentacle-like roots of a massive tree, its shape and leaves quite different to the ones he knew back home. Leaning against the trunk, with his knees pulled up to his body, sat Tom. Daniel felt awkward approaching him. He didn’t know what to say. He went and sat beside him and began stripping the bark from a twig he found lying on the ground.

“We’ll be thrown out when she dies.” Tom drew the back of his sleeve across his face.

“She’ll get better.” Daniel spoke more in hope than certainty.

“You’ve lived in Ireland all your life and you’re still an optimist? Welcome to reality. Folks don’t get better, they die. Or they leave you. Don’t you want to know where me da is? That drunken eejit. He works the railroads some place. Said he’d send money back for us. Said he’d send for us to join him. He’s out there drinking hisself silly, while Mammy lies here dying.”

Daniel felt a flood of anger, not at Tom’s absent father but at his self-pity. “You don’t think I knows what it’s like? I’d lost everything.” His nostrils flared as he spoke. “I found you and Molly, that’s my hope. I ain’t got no one but yous.” Feeling the overwhelming urge to cry, but desperate not to show his weakness, he instead punched Tom’s arm.

Tom punched him back and before long they were sprawling in the dust, each trying to pummel their frustration out on the other, until they eventually fell laughing in a heap. They were hardly more filthy and tattered than when they began.

About the Author: Rosemary J Kind writes because she has to. You could take almost anything away from her except her pen and paper. Failing to stop after the book that everyone has in them, she has gone on to publish books in both non-fiction and fiction, the latter including novels, humour, short stories and poetry. She also regularly produces magazine articles in a number of areas and writes regularly for the dog press.

As a child she was desolate when at the age of 10 her then teacher would not believe that her poem based on ‘Stig of the Dump’ was her own work and she stopped writing poetry for several years as a result. She was persuaded to continue by the invitation to earn a little extra pocket money by ‘assisting’ others to produce the required poems for English homework!

Always one to spot an opportunity, she started school newspapers and went on to begin providing paid copy to her local newspaper at the age of 16.

For twenty years she followed a traditional business career, before seeing the error of her ways and leaving it all behind to pursue her writing full-time.

She spends her life discussing her plots with the characters in her head and her faithful dogs, who always put the opposing arguments when there are choices to be made.

Always willing to take on challenges that sensible people regard as impossible, she established and ran the short story download site Alfie Dog Fiction for six years building it to become one of the largest in the world, representing over 300 authors and carrying over 1600 short stories. She closed it in order to focus on her own writing.

Her hobby is developing the Entlebucher Mountain Dog in the UK and when she brought her beloved Alfie back from Belgium he was only the tenth in the country.

She started writing Alfie’s Diary as an Internet blog the day Alfie arrived to live with her, intending to continue for a year or two. Thirteen years later it goes from strength to strength and has been repeatedly named as one of the top ten pet blogs in the UK.
