Top Five Strangest Experiences

Hey, if you saw me on the street, you might say, well, average looking, nothing strange here. But I have had some strange experiences!

When I was traveling in Fiji in my late 20s I lived on a friend’s 50’ sailboat by myself for 3 months. Fiji had just had a coup, and rumors abounded of people running around with machetes. Not true, but we didn’t know that. Guards were posted outside the hotel, the boat was tied up with dozens of others behind the hotel in the bay. That morning I had a call on the dock; my grandmother who I was very close to had just died. That evening, in the bow cabin of the boat, lying on my back, I heard someone stepping on the stern of the boat from the dock. It was very dark down below. The person made their way down the steps, through the main cabin. I readied to attack whoever came through my cabin door. When they entered, I sat up. I was pushed back very hard and held down for several seconds. I couldn’t move. The next day, Ilda, from Austria on the boat next door, said, “Ach, it’s nothing. It’s just your grandmother, she was upset you left. Just tell her you’re sorry and she won’t come back. I did, and that was that.
When I was traveling in the South Pacific on that same trip, sailing on boats from Fiji to Brisbane, Australia, everyone asked me what I was going to do when I arrived in Australia. I said, “Get trained in massage and live a block off Bondi Beach.” I knew no one in Australia, had no training in massage, and had no money. But I traveled from Brisbane down to Sydney, and on Bondi Beach I struck up a conversation with a woman, who knew the owner of the only legit massage studio in Sydney (the rest were prostitution), introduced me, I was trained, hired, and lived a block off Bondi Beach.

That kind of pattern has occurred often in my life. I always wanted to train with a true kung fu master, and at a YMCA met one of 8 reigning kung fu masters of Vo Lam Vietnam (sister system of Shaolin). He agreed to train me. More recently, I told everyone in 2020 I wanted 2-3 movie contracts in 2021. Now I have 4—two on my two thriller series, two on my two YA fantasy series.

More strange, but much harder to put into words, in 2020 I had a major breakthrough/change in consciousness. Intelligence runs all my actions, not thoughts. That is hard to establish, harder to describe and understand. It’s like intuition running 24/7 for everything—every single action. During that transition, I wrote SMILE MORE STRESS LESS, and change continued while I wrote the book. This has been something I have been pursuing most of my life, clarity of consciousness, so in a sense it’s not that ‘strange’—but in another sense it’s very different. I wouldn’t trade that wisdom for anything.

Also, I know the strangest things are yet to come, because once you open the door for intelligence, anything is possible.

The thought process is regarded as a sign of human intelligence, yet our thoughts often sabotage what we do and are unaware, negative, and create stress. We’re running an old program in our brain’s neural net. Worse, we’re addicted to the repetitive thought process. It feels good, safe, right. It feels like us. Who we are. Our thoughts create feelings and emotions which, even if we don’t always like them, are a known process that continually reinforces itself in the brain.

Minor adjustments are not enough to alter the brain’s stress process. The brain’s neural net needs a system overhaul, a complete update and reboot. We’re going to take thought off its pedestal and get real with it.

Too often we feel that to attain awareness means taking a very serious, “adult” approach to life, like a monk sitting in a cave for a decade. But it can be a playful adventure with childlike wonder.

Our INTENT in this process is the WHY of what we’re doing. Our intent is to consciously break up our habitual neural pattern—mechanical, negative thoughts—by informing and teaching the brain to change. In essence, to rewire itself. If the brain understands what we are trying to do, and why, it will listen. It has no choice. You can be the master of wiring your neural net to a positive state.

Who doesn’t want to smile more and stress less? I’m a bit of a non-fiction book freak, so I grabbed this for review. I’m glad I did.

While there honestly isn’t a ton of new information here, it was a really well-written, approachable version of stuff I already knew. I appreciated the reminder that we are what we think… and the exercises he gave (some silly, like the over-exaggerations exercise, and some serious, like building a doable to-do list). I also appreciated the insight into why humans are rather predisposed to experience stress (hint: we used to need it for survival) and why it hasn’t really translated all the effectively into modern day society.

The author has a light touch with everything, and not a little humor. Really, his “voice” made this such an easy, fun read. I almost felt as if he were sitting right next to me, talking me through each topic. It made the book a joy to read and made me want to do the exercises more (I admittedly didn’t do all of them, but I did many and I’m glad for it).

Am I cured of my stress? No. But do I have more tools for managing it? Yes. Smile More, Stress Less is one of those books I’ll plan on revisiting periodically to help me get better and better at finding the positive, good things in my life. They’re absolutely there, you just have to remind yourself to look for them.

Character Creation

When I write, I tend to fall in love with my characters—in a writerly way of course! When I first began writing, I had a very difficult time killing off a character in a story. Even the bad villains! I enjoyed them and didn’t want to see their story end. This was especially true for support characters. Some of the minor characters have major roles. In fact, some could have their own story!

If that is not true for your own writing, you might want to ask yourself why? If the writer loves supporting characters, there’s a good chance that readers will too. They will eagerly await the next dialogue or action from that character. They want to see what they do next. In fact, one could make the case that without supporting characters, the main character just isn’t as strong or interesting. It’s the supporting cast that allows the main character to shine, to be interesting, to show off.

So how do you make characters lovable to the reader? How do you make supporting characters as interesting as the main character? In my fantasy and thriller novels, I have many supporting characters, and many of them I absolutely enjoy every time they appear in the story.

Supporting characters should be:

• Interesting—something unique to them.
• Have desires and goals like every character.
• Be sympathetic—the reader needs to understand why they are the way they are.
• Have a significant effect on the story and on the main character—otherwise why have them?
• Show vulnerability at some level.
• Have some mystery or surprise about them—for you and the reader.

In the 4th book of Magical Beasts; Guardian The Stand, I have an ancient super-powerful Great One called. She can kick anyone’s butt. Yet she shows concern for the main character, even though she also is threatens the main character. The main character ‘gets’ to Valera—and in a sense helps wake her up. This supporting character Valera only appears in short scenes 5 times in the entire book, yet she is one of my most beloved characters that I have ever created. And she is absolutely essential to the main character and to the story. Without her, there is a hole in the story that would be difficult to fill. I absolutely adore Valera! Lol

If you can make the supporting cast shine, then the main character will have that much more substance, and the main character won’t have to shoulder the whole ‘interest’ burden for the reader. In my thriller novels, I have a very bad killer, Angel, and his sister, who both reform. Angel appears in the 2nd and 5th Jack Steel books (Steel Assassin, and Steel Trap). Angel’s journey is so interesting that he could absolutely have his own book. Yet because he is 100% tied to the main character’s journey, he becomes absolutely essential to the story, something the main character even acknowledges at the end of book 5, where he makes his latest appearance.

Make your supporting cast as interesting as the main characters, and you will have a rich tapestry of a story. One that the readers will love. Plus, it’s a lot more fun to write when you are in love with every character too!

Samantha and Jake fight to save their poisoned parents, and instead find themselves in a battle to save the parallel magical world of KiraKu. The two teens discover they must defeat the Evil One—a diabolical master of deception—or their own world will fall too. Samantha must master the mysterious supernatural staff, WhipEye, and find out if she has what it takes to fulfill the prophecy of the true guardian. In a final battle, reminiscent of Lord of the Rings, the two teens will have to risk everything, or lose it all. For Fans of Fantastic Beasts, Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, The Hobbit, and Lord of the Rings.

“Watch out, Sam!” yells Jake.

I fling myself sideways onto the grass, pulling WhipEye out of reach of the lizard’s snapping jaws. The beast keeps going, leaping up.

Tarath springs vertically after it, but the Komodo’s flapping wings lift it fifty feet in one beat, inches beyond the caracal’s swinging claws. Tarath falls back to the ground, landing silently on the grass. She snarls up at the Komodo.

Hissing, the lizard hovers above us. His eyes bore into mine. “If you want to save your elders, bring the staff to Gorgon. Today. Alone. Or they die.” Shifting his gaze to Tarath, he says, “We’ll meet again, Great One.”

Tarath yowls while the Komodo quickly flies away, giving a faint roar before it fades in the distance.

“Mom.” Jake rests his hand on his mother’s shoulder. She appears unconscious.

Scrambling over the lawn to Dad, I press trembling fingers against his neck. He has a pulse. Jagged cuts on his thighs have darkened his jeans with blood. The same ugly slashes mark Cynthia’s legs. The wounds appear serious enough for stitches, but not life-threatening. In fact, when I examine Dad’s cuts closer, they’ve already stopped bleeding. Komodo bites can be deadly due to venom, but I’m not sure about claw wounds.

Jake looks bewildered. “Why didn’t you give the staff to the Komodo, Sam?”

My throat thickens. “I couldn’t.” It sounds lame, even to me. With one decision everything in my life is in shambles. And I have no one to blame but myself.

Tarath surprises me when she shrinks to five feet tall while padding toward us. Lowering her head between our parents, she sniffs the air. “Poison,” she spits.

A guttural roar splits the evening air in the meadow, sending shivers along my bare arms.

I stand rigidly, listening, while I stare across the hundred-yard-wide circular pond at the distant Superior National Forest. Shadows hide everything in the thick woods. The roar was too loud for a bear, too wild and harsh for any animal in northern Minnesota.

My thoughts flash back to the fanged and clawed demon from my nightmares of the last two weeks. Coming to kill me as it does in my dreams. Can’t be real. Can’t be happening. I try to calm myself by breathing evenly.

Slowly I back up through the waist-high meadow grass, my legs stiff. I focus my gaze across the pond. Ski-tailed emerald dragonflies and red damselflies flit by, as do a few yellow jackets. Mink frogs creak from the shoreline. Everything seems normal, except for the roar.

I’m standing at the far eastern edge of Dad’s property. I have the staff with me, still wrapped in burlap. WhipEye. An odd name. I don’t know what it means, or how I know it.

Two specks of gold appear in the distant forest. They look like eyes. The rest of the body is hidden in shadows.

The gold eyes move toward me through the trees, about eight feet off the ground. I turn and bolt like a jackrabbit.
