In a heartfelt story set in a picturesque small town in Virginia, Mary McDonough portrays three generations of women in a modern Irish-American family as they navigate marriage, motherhood, and independence. . .

The Fitzgibbons–especially the women–have long been the backbone of Oliver’s Well, Virginia. Matriarch Mary Bernadette is still striking and tireless at seventy-five, with a generous heart that belies her sometimes sharp tongue. Her husband, Paddy, owns the local landscaping business, daughter Grace is a nun, and son Pat and his wife Megan are successful lawyers. Her grandson, PJ, and his new wife, Alexis, live in a charming cottage behind the main house. Church, family, tradition, and the local historical society–everything Mary Bernadette cherishes is in Oliver’s Well. But below the surface, there are fractures.

Megan sees the strained relationship between her husband and Mary Bernadette, who has never quite recovered from the painful loss of her first-born son. Megan too is torn between gaining her mother-in-law’s approval and living life on her own terms. Alexis loves PJ deeply yet chafes against his grandmother’s influence in their marriage. Then a looming scandal brings unexpected tragedy, compelling the Fitzgibbons to determine the depth of their loyalty, find their strength–and repair the bonds that have held a town, and a family, together for so long.

With warmth and an abundance of insight, Mary McDonough artfully captures the shifting dynamics of family life–and the revelations they may bear just in time.

A family, of intelligent, industrious people ruled by an unbending matriarch in a small town with lots of history, lures the reader. I found myself reading just one more chapter then just one more and on and on, as I empathized with the characters, even the ones I wanted to “tell a few home truths to.”

Mary Bernadette Fitzgibbon, now past seventy, lives in a time warp and seems to have walled off her heart. Her stern, uncompromising influence on her family and the town of Oliver’s Well, where she heads up the Oliver’s Well Historical Association, permeates the story. Her husband Paddy, while not often seen, has a unique strength to be admired.

P. J., Mary Bernadette’s grandson, and his new wife Alexis live in the cottage near the grandparents and P. J. runs the family business. This young couple’s relationship hits some scary spots as they learn how to deal with the domineering matriarch. How I wanted to give that young man a good talking-to about the wedding vow he made in the church.

Grace and Pat, the children of Mary Bernadette and Paddy, deal with their mother in different styles, but each of them is woven into the story in a way that makes them seems so like living, breathing humans who struggle mightily to stay connected to family.

Megan, Pat’s wife, is different. Her quiet, never-give-up strength is like a golden thread running through the story. She relies on “make me an instrument of peace” to find her center when the going gets rough, but she made me laugh once at a stressful time, when she said to herself “I’m going to kill her if she dies.” Her courage inspires.

The Seven Deadly Sins rear their ugly heads and get stomped down from time to time, while Wynston Meadows, a wealth newcomer to Oliver’s Well, proves to be a lot harder to stomp. How he is dealt with creates more than a little anxiety.

William, whom I’ll let you find out about, is like the elephant-in-the-room throughout the unfolding of the story, probably a lesson to be learned here.

Mary McDonough creates a memorable story that is written in a charming style that keeps the reader in the middle of the action.

What better popular event to bring two lonely souls together than a historical Mardi Gras parade? When eight year old Allie falls Dr. Mark Clayborn was there in the streets of Mobile to clean and bandage her small injury. This chance meeting is just the start of many other meetings for adults Laura Akins and Mark Clayborn.

This was a story I enjoyed reading. The relationship between Laura and Mark was a pleasure to read and follow along. Mark is a southern gentleman who won my heart. Laura was pretty standoffish but that didn’t stop Mark. With many suggestions from Mark and the help of Allie, Laura finds herself in the presence of Mark quite often. With Mark’s charm you knew she was bound to soften to his advances.

The author didn’t just create a simple love story of boy meets girl but added life events that both Laura and Mark were dealing with. The way they were placed together to compliment each other during a time of healing and growth as individuals was touching. They each knew the right words to say and when and how to say them. Their relationship began to have value and I could appreciate reading this type of relationship growth.

The characters are strong and caring in this book.I admired Laura for being a strong woman to carry on after her husband left her not only without a husband but her pride wouldn’t allow her to ask for help from her wealthy family. She is an independent hard working single mother that finds it on her heart to help other single mothers.

This is truly a book of redemption and one that I would highly recommend to those that enjoy a good romance that leaves you with a happy lifted feeling.

The moment Raven saw Amanda’s picture, he had suspicions. Now that he’s seen her in person, he’s certain. She is his truebond, though it will take a delicate, feather-light touch to bring her into his world.

Never More is the next book in Dana Marie Bell’s Gray Court series. It is Raven and Amanda’s story, but there is a wedding in the works, for Robin and Michaela as well.

Acting as the best man at his father’s wedding, Raven Goodfellow is determined to make sure the day goes perfectly. After all, it isn’t every day that Robin Goodfellow, AKA The Hob, finds his truebond and agrees to a human ceremony for her family. The ceremony will be held at the Dunne farm, and Raven wants to make sure everything is secure and safe. When he meets Michaela’s wedding planner, Amanda Pierson, he realizes she is the blonde woman that he has been dreaming about, Ruby Dunne’s best friend. He also realizes something else; Amanda is something he never thought he would have, his truebond. But before he can act on the information, he discovers a plot to frame him for murder, and tie it to a threat to his father and Michaela. Now, Raven has to find a way to protect Amanda, stop his brother from killing him, defuse a djinn death trap and make sure his father’s wedding goes off without any problems. Oh, and hope Robin doesn’t put him in a pastel tuxedo for the wedding. Can Raven convince Amanda that he is meant to be her true mate, and she his? Will she think he is insane, or accept the supernatural beings around her? Can Raven and the rest of the wedding party keep disaster at bay for the day?

These books are set in the ‘real world’ but have paranormal overtones of the fae, vampires and shifters. I like this world, where human and other live together, and occasionally fall in love with each other. I enjoy each visit to this world, catching up on the families that have become friends of mine as Ms. Bell continues to expand this community of diverse beings.

Raven Goodfellow is the dark and handsome son of Robin Goodfellow, and still can’t believe that he has been accepted by the one man he thought had sold him. He wants what his father has found, the love of a good woman, but he believes it is not in his future to be loved. Until he meets Amanda, and she throws his world in turmoil. He quickly discovers he needs to protect and cherish her, like his father does Michaela. He was once the Dark Queen’s most formidable weapon, now he will use those powers to protect and defend those he cares about. I love Raven’s unswerving loyalty to those he care about, and his determination to protect and defend those weaker than he is. I loved watching as he worked to convince Amanda he wasn’t crazy at all, just something different.

Amanda Pierson is Ruby Dunne’s best friend in the world, and she has no idea that these attractive people she is planning a wedding for are more than human. When Raven tells her about the hidden reality for most of them, she thinks he is crazy, and is sad, because she was attracted to him more than any man before. But Amanda doesn’t do crazy, and is ready to ignore her feelings, until Raven shows her his ‘other’ self, and tells her about the world around her. I like Amanda and her quirky sense of humor, and her independent nature. I like that she is willing to accept the proof when confronted, and her courage in the face of danger.

There is danger around every corner in this one. There is the trap set by Raven’s evil brother at the site of the ceremony, there is the plot to frame Raven for the fae murders, and there is also a death threat to Raven from the Dark Queen. But there is also lots of humor, laughter and passion in this one, and a side of Raven and Liam (aka Big Red) that shows a lighter side of both men. There are all kinds of paranormal beings to discover; fae, leprechauns, dragons, mer folk, vampires and many more, living, laughing and falling in love. And there is the Wedding of the Ages for Robin and Michaela, and I was delighted to meet Michaela’s human family in this…her sister and two brothers, who became an integral part of the family quite easily. I enjoy each new episode of Ms Bell’s Gray Court series, and look forward to the next one with little patience. I recommend this for all those who loved fairy tales and fantasies, and want them to be just a bit more grown up.

Five very different women, each carrying her own secret, meet on the Jersey shore for a retreat: Embracing the New You: Reinventing Yourself After Fifty. A story about change, self-acceptance, and sisterhood.

Five women, each strangers with their life out of alignment, come together on the Jersey shore expecting eight days of respite, which might put their lives back on track. What each woman did not expect was to find new friends.

It’s one thing to be young and vibrant and know your dreams are ahead, but it’s quite another when you’re 50+ and realize you’ve been so busy holding life together for others, your own dreams have slipped away.

When Julia, Markie, Andi, Liv, and Cee Cee first meet, they find themselves stranded together on the front porch steps of Siochain – the women’s retreat whose name means peace. It’s easy to see these women are vastly different, and their personalities clash or cradle each other almost immediately.

Upon their arrival, Bree, the director of the retreat, is nowhere to be found. With the day’s heat bearing down, and menopausal Andi already complaining of heat flashes, Markie decides to search for a hidden key. “It’s not breaking in if you have a key,” she assures them. Once inside, they find out that Bree has been called away on a family emergency, and with each women desperate to get something from the “Reinventing Yourself After 50!” retreat, they decide to stay. During the week, the strengths and weaknesses of each woman come into play. We learn about their life struggle, as well as the secret each woman carries with her.

Romance is not a key element in this story, although love makes its own powerful point. So much so, in fact, that the reader may find themselves redefining their own understanding of it.

I found myself totally immersed in the lives of these five women. Their journey felt personal, as if they had shared their secrets with only me.

The character development in this book was superb! Only a masterful writer could create the individual backstory behind each of these characters. Readers, especially those who are 50+, may feel as though they’ve been on a women’s retreat themselves after finishing this wonderful novel.

Elsa Sinclair’s ability to bring stunning realism to her historical novels is a secret she must never reveal. She does her research first-hand—by traveling back in time.

A man out of time…

Dante Lucerne is shocked to find himself pulled from certain death and carried to another time and continent. The new world is full of wonders, not the least of which is the woman who saved him.

As Elsa helps Dante adjust to his new world, she makes a terrifying discovery—she is falling in love. And it is Dante who must find a way to help her let go of secrets that run deeper than her power. Into the very heart of what they could lose if he fails…

A twist to the legendary tale of the Phantom of the Opera, but this time it will have a ending that any romantic would love.

I was very much curious when I first read the synopsis. I have heard so much about the Phantom of the Opera and most of these tales don’t really have a happy ending. Not for me at least. But Miss Chandler has spun a tale wholly different to anything I could have imagined.

Elsa is special. She’s a writer with an ability to travel through time using artifacts such as paintings and rings and such. During one of these travels she brings back the Phantom of the Opera or in other words, she brings back Dante Lucerne to the future with her.

When Dante opened his eyes he has traveled a century to a time period which he can build a new life for himself. He finds that the a lot has happened in a century. Now, he has to learn not only how to talk correctly but also driving and other actions that would make his life easier.

Wandering Soul is a story that’s well known but is also a retelling of a possible future or the ending, I suppose. Phantom of the Opera is a classic and has many different versions, but so far this one is my favorite because there are my two main genres: Contemporary and Paranormal.

For paranormal lovers this will be a treat but for any readers who do not necessarily read paranormal, this book may surprise them because Wandering Soul is what I would call paranormal-light. The paranormal element is there, it moves the story along, but it isn’t the main focus.

Dante and Elsa have a passion that flares every now and then. And during Dante’s “getting to know the future” phase they get to spend a lot of time together and just form a bond that I am pretty sure would weather a lot in the upcoming future. The question that I had in my head while reading was, would they be able to let go of their past to build a future for themselves?

Wandering Soul was a surprise read. The characters, the main and the secondary, had depth and shades that I loved reading about. It had twists and turns that most readers are sure to love.

Modern GLBTQI fiction of the Great War

Ten authors – in thirteen stories – explore the experiences of GLBTQI people during World War I. In what ways were their lives the same as or different from those of other people?

You’ll find both heartaches and joys in this astonishing range of thought-provoking stories.

They say that tough times bring out a person’s true colors. If this is true, I want to meet all of these characters.

Skip ahead and read “War Life” first. It followed a brother who enlisted in the war effort as well as the older sister he left behind at home. They both had introspective personalities that work well with this subject matter. I was especially interested in seeing how similarly these siblings described the world around them despite living in radically different environments at the moment. It left me me yearning for more and could easily have been expanded into a full-length novel!

There were a few contributions that I would have liked to see expanded into something a little longer so that the character in the would have had more time to grow. All of them were good stories that I deeply enjoyed reading, they simply needed some additional attention. “A Rooted Sorrow” was a good example of this. It involved a woman’s adjustment to life after the war, although there were several other characters competing for the spotlight in the plot. All of the background information about them was interesting, but it took me quite a while to figure out who was actually the protagonist. This might have worked better as a longer work so that more time could be spent exploring the relationships between everyone in what sounded like an incredibly warm and close-knit community.

“The Man Left Behind” showed how Henry’s life changed as a result of the war. He wasn’t allowed to fight in it, so he had to find another way to contribute. This was yet another tale that I was sad to see end. Henry was so well written that I desperately wanted to see what happened to him during the rest of his life. His personality burst through the plot he’d been given in the best way possible. While I don’t know if the author is planning on releasing a sequel, I’d be thrilled to read it if she does.

A Pride of Poppies: Modern GLBTQI Fiction of the Great War is a beautiful collection that I’d recommend to anyone who has even the slightest interest in World War I or GLBTQI fiction.

Anything can happen during a vacation.

There’s something to be said for a romance that develops slowly. I appreciated how slowly this part of the plot unfolded. The main character developed her crush quickly, but her reasons for feeling that way were reasonable and genuine. Instant infatuations work best for me as a reader when the characters involved in them seem to be aware of how much time has actually passed and that they don’t yet know everything about each other. This tale fulfilled every single one of these requirements. That made it really easy for me to hope that Rochelle and Poppy would end up together.

The flashbacks to Poppy’s earlier relationships were interesting, but they happened so frequently that they distracted my attention from the main plot. They also made me wonder why the author was spending so much time showing the reader what happened in the past. It would have been helpful to have more clues about why these flashbacks were so important to what was currently going on in the main character’s life.

All of the French food in this story sounded amazing. Including small details like what a real croissant should taste like or how the portion sizes of certain dishes differ from what someone in the United States would probably expect to see on their plate was a good decision. Not only did it make me hungry, it made it really easy to immerse myself in what Poppy was experiencing.

The Peach and the Poppy is a good choice for anyone who is in the mood for a modern romance novel that just might sweep them off their feet.

A world so familiar and yet totally unlike anything I’ve read before.

Mia has lost a lot in a small space of time. She first appears to be a strong woman who stood up for herself in the beginning. As the story evolves and changes, I began to question the strength that originally drew me to her as a character. She stood up for herself in a big way once, I couldn’t understand why she allowed herself to be minimized in a very real way later in the story.

This book has a very unusual and unique paranormal background. For the most part, that was a plus. I felt a lot of different kinds of emotions (both good and bad) as I got further into Mia and Dominic’s story. What put a damper on the plot and the story is the use of the word ‘Pet’. It wasn’t necessarily an endearment like it is in some books. In this case, ‘Pet’ refers to ‘mistress’ or something to be owned, such as a human. Miss Gordon did a good job in trying to explain what ‘Pet’ actually means in Dominic’s world. The issue I had wasn’t so much with the word as with how it made me feel for Mia’s sake. Because she’s human, she would never be allowed to be more than a ‘pet’ or ‘mistress’ to Dominic. It wouldn’t matter that they were clearly drawn to one another and had chemistry to spare. Being human made her unacceptable in his society and the best she could ever hope to be was a ‘pet’. Never a mate, never a wife.

Dominic Wolfe is a werewolf. Not just kind of werewolf. He is the enforcer to the king. When he sees the newcomer in the cottage, there is an instant connection between both of them. Though the falling in love comes a lot later. He is protective and partial to her. When the plot starts unraveling the chemistry and the passion between Mia and Dominic heats up and with it the paranormal activity does the same. Dominic plays a crucial part is getting Mia to come out of her shell after she joins the Witness Protection Program.

Whenever she’s is in danger, Dominic goes into a protective state which is very sweet to see. There is BDSM in it but only small amount, very light.

Since this is a series, I would say Miss Gordon has done a good of keeping the suspense while satisfying the readers at the same time.

I would recommend it to readers who like their paranormal with a slight hint of BDSM

Eimear McBride’s debut tells, with astonishing insight and in brutal detail, the story of a young woman’s relationship with her brother, and the long shadow cast by his childhood brain tumour. Not so much a stream of consciousness, as an unconscious railing against a life that makes little sense, and a shocking and intimate insight into the thoughts, feelings and chaotic sexuality of a vulnerable and isolated protagonist, to read A Girl Is A Half-Formed Thing is to plunge inside its narrator’s head, experiencing her world first-hand. This isn’t always comfortable – but it is always a revelation.

Touching on everything from family violence to sexuality and the personal struggle to remain intact in times of intense trauma, McBride writes with singular intensity, acute sensitivity and mordant wit. A Girl is a Half-formed Thing is moving, funny – and alarming. It is a book you will never forget.

A Girl is a Half-formed Thing reveals the inner workings of a girl, from her early years and into adulthood, whose brother suffers from a brain tumor.

What I noticed first about this book is the style. It’s shocking at first, a stream-of-consciousness of sorts, and it takes a while before you get sucked in and you start to distinguish the different voices. The ‘I’ is the narrator, the ‘you’ is her brother with whom she ‘talks’ in her mind. The sentences are chopped up and re-stitched together into ungrammatical, disjointed fragments that are at times revealing and at times confusing. Although reminiscent of Joyce, this novel is far more accessible, and the story can pull a reader in despite the occasional passage that is too obscure to decipher.

The plot of the novel could be summarized in just a few lines, but that doesn’t really give it justice. The real action takes place in the girl’s mind, in her coping with her strict and distant mother, the handicapped brother, and the uncle with whom she starts a disquieting, strange relationship in her adolescence. This is not a light read; rather, it’s disturbing in places and thought-provoking throughout. The girl’s sexual exploits that often border on abuse – but abuse instigated by herself – are difficult to read about and towards the end I felt they became too much.

Although there are some gentle moments between the narrator and her brother, most of the book is a dark read that more or less only allows one ending. Despite that, A Girl is a Half-formed Thing is cathartic and gripping in its own way.

When society widow and gossip columnist Lady Jane Winters joined the fishing class, she wasted no time in ruffling the feathers-or was it the fins?-of those around her. Among the victims of her sharp tongue and unladylike manner was Lochdubh Constable Hamish Macbeth. Yet not even Hamish thought someone would permanently silence Lady Jane’s shrills-until her strangled body is fished out of the river. Now with the help of the lovely Priscilla Halburton-Smythe, Hamish must angle through the choppy waters of the tattler’s life to find the murderer. But with a school of suspects who aren’t ready to talk and dead women telling no tales, Hamish may be in over his head, for he knows that secrets are dangerous, knowledge is power, and killers usually do strike again.

Deep in the Scottish Highlands is a quaint little village called Lochdubh. Now that fishing season has opened, there are new recruits to the fishing school run by John and Heather Cartwright. When one of their students turns up murdered, the mystery falls to Constable Macbeth to solve. Is one backwoods constable equipped to solve a murder?

I find it highly amusing that, from the very beginning you know exactly who is going to get murdered. Why? Because she was the most annoying character I’ve ever encountered and I very well may have stopped reading if she’d survived. Lady Jane Winters, a nasty gossip columnist, doesn’t seem to have a decent bone in her body, letting everyone’s secrets slip in the most public of ways. I’m actually rather surprised that it took someone as long as it did to kill her. She made no friends during her visit to the fishing school.

Hamish Macbeth is hands down the best thing about this entire story. He’s quirky, he’s funny, and he absolutely aggravates every last person in Lochdubh. Even better is that he doesn’t care. He simply carries on with his day and mooches as many cups of coffee and free meals as he can. The tactics he employs are outlandish and suspect, but in the end, he gets the job done, all while aggravating Chief Inspector Blair, sent down from the larger city of Strathbane.

Cozy mysteries are quickly becoming a favorite go-to on my bookshelf. Death of a Gossip wasn’t the most gripping mystery, but it certainly was the funniest. I don’t know about you, but there is definitely a place for a laugh-out-loud mystery in my life. Jam packed with odd and sometimes annoying characters, Death of a Gossip is a quick and easy read that will bring you more than a taste of mystery.
