We know her name. We know of her naked ride. We don’t know her true story.

We all know the legend of Lady Godiva, who famously rode naked through the streets of Coventry, covered only by her long, flowing hair. So the story goes, she begged her husband Lord Leofric of Mercia to lift a high tax on her people, who would starve if forced to pay. Lord Leofric demanded a forfeit: that Godiva ride naked on horseback through the town. There are various endings to Godiva’s ride, that all the people of Coventry closed their doors and refused to look upon their liege lady (except for ‘peeping Tom’) and that her husband, in remorse, lifted the tax.

Naked is an original version of Godiva’s tale with a twist that may be closer to the truth: by the end of his life Leofric had fallen deeply in love with Lady Godiva. A tale of legendary courage and extraordinary passion, Naked brings an epic story new voice.

Though historical romance is not my usual genre, I was very interested in reading this book. We know the legend of Lady Godiva, now I got to meet the woman and see the author’s interpretation of the story behind her ride. I’m glad I did.

First off, be warned that the author’s writing style might not resonate for everyone. She uses fragments, and some choppy sentences, but I didn’t find it intrusive. I zipped through the pages, interested in the world she built. I confess that I’m not well-versed in many of the historical references or mores of the times, so can’t comment on whether they are correct, but I completely enjoyed seeing the way life was then.

Godiva is strong and loving. She comes from a family who adores her and is destroyed when her parents are killed. Yes, she’s young and a bit naïve at times, but she does what she needs to do in order to care for her people. She’s a ruler and a woman to be admired.

We readers aren’t sure whether to root for her relationship with Leofric, whom she marries from necessity, especially when we know he is the one who will eventually cause her to shame herself and ride naked through the town. Is he a good man or an evil one? Should she have married her childhood friend, Edmund, instead?

I admired the author’s story telling prowess and imagination, along with the little historical tidbits she sprinkled in here and there; the day-to-day routines, the food, the herbs. The secondary characters, too, were well drawn, which isn’t always easy to do in a book written in first person.

While, at its heart this is a romance, it’s not a typical one, and those going in expecting that might be disappointed. It’s a dramatic retelling of a historical event that includes romance, but also so much more. I enjoyed this book, and am glad I had the chance to read it.

Due to a fortuitous circumstance, Wyatt and his friends are invited to the star-studded opening of Monsterland. In a theme park full of real vampires, werewolves and zombies, what could possibly go wrong?

Not quite horror (despite some gore), but certainly plenty scary in parts, Monsterland was a great read.

First off, I have to say this: author Michael Phillip Cash has serious writing chops. From the first line I was plunged into the story with his clear, vivid descriptions and interesting scenes. The characters were so clearly drawn I felt as if I sat right there with them on the couch in the home watching the TV. I was really impressed.

The story was interesting. Occasionally scary, occasionally funny, sometimes desperately sad, I was completely engrossed. Is it an unlikely scenario? Absolutely. Most dystopian-type books that I read I’ll nod and think, “Yep, I can see that happening.” but not so much this one. Did that diminish my enjoyment? Not really. But, honestly, that’s mostly because I was so crazy about the characters. There were a few places where I really had to suspend my belief in reality for this, but I didn’t care. I’d have followed Carter and Wyatt anywhere.

The story does start a little slowly, but it sort of had to in order to introduce us to what’s going on…a town that’s on the brink of collapse, a virus that turns people into zombies, a wealthy businessman who’s going to save everyone with his theme park and Carter’s suspicion of the guy’s motives.

I really loved Carter. He’s trying so hard to be a good dad to his step-kids, both of whom are teens so it makes it that much harder for him to connect with them. They have the “you’re not my dad” syndrome, but he doesn’t give up. He’s a great guy. Despite wanting to slap the boys now and then, they grew on me and definitely did some growing up and maturing during the story.

There is some strong language and descriptive gore throughout, so be warned if that’s not your thing. But if it is? You should definitely give this book a go. It was a winner for me, and I’ll be keeping an eye out for more from this author.

FACE THE TRUTH

Now Liv must decide, before it’s too late. Who does she love? Who is really on her side? And can she save herself without burning down everything that matters most?

Deceptions and illusions at every turn.

Olivia Taylor-Jones has just had her life upended. She has discovered she’s adopted and her real parents are convicted serial killers. Hiding in the small town of Cainesville to escape media attention, she finds herself at the center of a very different sort of plot that may or may not involve the true nature of her parents. Behind the lies and pretty fakery lie the twisted secrets of the fae and their trickery runs deep.

There are several aspects to this novel. One is the Welsh mythology that runs throughout. I found that fascinating in the extreme. Without having read the first two books however, I was utterly lost and floundered around like a misplaced fish. So-take my advice and don’t pick this book up until you’ve had the pleasure of reading the first two. They are now on my list. With all the mysteries dredged up, the plot kept me guessing and summarily scratching my head. I just didn’t have the correct context in which to read the book in the middle of the series. The author has too many things going on and you need to have the solid background for the book to flesh out in the appropriate fashion.

Another appealing facet of this book was the love triangle between Olivia, Gabriel and Ricky. There was tension in the air and wow…you can feel something building here. Sort of Twilight-ish. Ricky is perfect-in my mind almost too perfect for a biker. Gabriel is moody and I’m not altogether sure where things are going to lead but either way, it’s going to be interesting.

The nightmarish quality of Olivia’s visions was the part that intrigued me the most. Her heritage brings her down all manner of dark passages and leaps in time and space. And bodies for that matter. Despite not knowing exactly what I was reading, I was transfixed by the sheer creep factor of Olivia being inside of her mother’s body while she was in the asylum watching her relative-and seeing the true nature of the nurse as a shining one. So cool. The rage. The thrumming emotion. It was as vibrant as any painting. There is a lot of fear of the unknown and it floods the pages, making any lover of horror, romance or fantasy just revel in it.

My rating of 4/5 is mostly based on the fact that picking up the book, I wanted to be able to understand what was going on and at least be able to have a point of reference without having to have read the others in the series. I didn’t have that and was quite frustrated. If not for that, this would be a five star all the way. The characters were alive. The sex scenes-the ones that there were-were hot and appropriate for the story line. The dialogue was spot on. The mythology nicely woven into the fiber of the book. With Kelly Armstrong I would expect nothing less. She is one of my favorite PNR authors and has been for years. I will be going back and investing time and money in the other books in the series because now I simply have to find out what the heck is going on. The mystery is too compelling for me not to.

Read them in order-but read them. And be sure to sleep with the lights on.

A goldfish named Ian is falling from the 27th-floor balcony on which his fishbowl sits. He’s longed for adventure, so when the opportunity arises, he escapes from his bowl, clears the balcony railing and finds himself airborne. Plummeting toward the street below, Ian witnesses the lives of the Seville on Roxy residents.

There’s the handsome grad student, his girlfriend, and his mistress; the construction worker who feels trapped by a secret; the building’s super who feels invisible and alone; the pregnant woman on bed rest who craves a forbidden ice cream sandwich; the shut-in for whom dirty talk, and quiche, are a way of life; and home-schooled Herman, a boy who thinks he can travel through time. Though they share time and space, they have something even more important in common: each faces a decision that will affect the course of their lives. Within the walls of the Seville are stories of love, new life, and death, of facing the ugly truth of who one has been and the beautiful truth of who one can become.

Sometimes taking a risk is the only way to move forward with our lives. As Ian the goldfish knows, “An entire life devoted to a fishbowl will make one die an old fish with not one adventure had.”

Ian is a goldfish. A goldfish that is falling from the twenty-seventh floor balcony of the Seville on Roxy apartment complex. Now, Ian is a modern goldfish without any of the hang-ups of his contemporary aquatic friends like, say, Troy the snail. So, as Ian falls from the top floor of the Seville, the things he observes aren’t any shock to him, nor are they of much concern, either. But for the rest of us? It’s a little more intriguing than a passing goldfish could ever dream.

The narrative takes us through the lives of a handful of people living at the Seville on Roxy, although it starts and focuses mainly on Connor and his girlfriend, Katie. These two are probably the most mainstream of the group, especially when compared to Claire who works a phone sex line from her apartment, Herman who is homeschooled, and Garth – the construction worker with a secret. Each apartment holds its own story and each story deals with a bit of reality we’d all like to forget or maybe engage with more – life, death, love, mental illness, you name it, it’s at the Seville on Roxy.

I have never so fully enjoyed an entire cast of characters as much I did these. Major props to the author for giving each character a realistic and complete backstory, one that makes you feel invested in that person, even if you only see them once every handful of chapters. Even though Connor is pretty much a hopeless dog, he’s still likable in an odd sort of way, and he’s not always all that easy to like. The author finds a way to point out something good in each character, even when you think there’s nothing of value. Of them all, Garth and Jimenez are probably my favorites, mostly because they’re two people who get overlooked and ignored a lot in their lives.

The concept of this novel was the thing that hooked me. That and the illustration of Ian’s plummet from the top to his eventual resting spot at the bottom that was drawn along the right-hand margin of the book, but this really has nothing to do with the story, it was just an amusing addition to an already amusing novel. Although it was purported to be in the tradition of two books that I had loved, I found Fishbowl to fall more in line with something more Douglas Adams-like than either Garth Stein or Armistead Maupin. Either way, this was one of the most entertaining novels I’ve read all year.

Confused by her own attraction to the tattooed “thug,” Rachelle sets out to make Jay as aware of her as she is of him. Unfortunately the threats to her life are all too real, and Jay is forced to bring her into “his world” until the threat is…dealt with. But he has an even bigger fight on his hands–his desire for the one woman he’s forbidden to have.

Two young people with a complex family life find their introduction in His Diamond Queen. Jay Price had a not so fortunate up bringing, while Rachelle Silva has anything her heart desires at her disposal. But is that a good thing when her mother has been a mistress for 25 years? Rachelle’s father is a man of power and status, and this brings about many enemies, which in turn opens up a position for Jay Price as Rachelle’s personal body guard.

Besides their chemistry and attraction drawing them together, I just didn’t see this couple fitting together with conversation of things they have in common nor did I see them growing as a couple. Though the attraction was one that could not be denied the sex scene just seem forced or out of place to me. It was kind of like they realized they were alone and said hey let’s have sex. There was no type of romance or special evening planned just straight to the do. In the first part of the book their relationship wasn’t one I enjoyed reading about. In the beginning they were hating each other as well as denying their attraction; they had sex and then were in love and were inseparable. I would have like to see them spending quiet moments together first and then working their way to the intimate moments. The author didn’t let me down though. After about half way the book is when they started sharing moments, spending time as a couple talking and sharing interest. From that point I did start to like the time Rachelle and Jay spent together at home and the time they spent with Jay’s friends.

I liked the mystery and the suspense of finding out what was going on and why Rachelle was in danger. Finding out who was behind the attempted kidnapping and break-ins was sort of a surprise. I thought someone else was behind it, but I was wrong. It didn’t take me long to read the book, and even though the storyline was predictable it was a cute read. I enjoyed the action scenes as well. Even though this is a love story I appreciate the author including a few good action scenes. The writing is pleasant, easy to follow and moved fairly quickly.

I am a fan of the author but this book didn’t completely win me over like the prior series of Queen Quartette books. The author has the same type formula of women in distress, and attractive men that just happen to be right there to save them. In this series Jay is a former bad boy which added dimension to the character and also brought about the scenario of bad boy meets good girl. The variety of their up bringing brought about an interesting combination and entertaining read.

Though this is one I wouldn’t announce as a must read, it still would be a good read for those that enjoy a book with no cliffhangers and that has a happy ending.

Olympic skier Lock Roane was on top of the world: smashing world records, collecting medals, and basking in the love of a nation and his beautiful heiress girlfriend. It all comes crashing down after Lock discovers his girlfriend had an affair – then wakes from a drunken bender to find himself covered in her blood. Disgraced and dethroned, Lock awaits his murder trial with dread, not knowing if his girlfriend died at his own hands.

Journalist Jordan Sinclair is out of options. To satisfy her blackmailer, she must get the inside scoop (and its cash reward) on Lock Roane. An attraction to the arrogant athlete was not part of the plan. Neither is trying to find out what really happened that night. Now Jordan risks everything – including her life – to help the man she’s falling for. A man who just might be a cold-blooded killer…

He only wants to prove his innocence while she’s looking for the story of a lifetime. While Lock Roane is content to hide out until the murder trial of his girlfriend Tiffany begins, Jordan Sinclair, a freelance journalist, has other ideas. She’s running out of time and in order to keep herself and her mother safe, she’s going to have to commit the ultimate betrayal. But can she do it or has Lock and Load already gotten too far under her skin?

I’m not going to lie – I really liked Lock from the beginning, even when he was being a bit of a jerk to his extremely drunk girlfriend. He has this vibe of ‘yes, I’m being a jerk, but it’s for your own good’. As you get to know him better, you come to understand, mostly through Jordan’s eyes, that the cocky, jerky exterior is his ‘Lock and Load’ persona, that of the world-famous skier. The one he needs to survive in that world. His strained relationship with his brother only enhances his softer side, the one he doesn’t want anyone to see.

Jordan I wasn’t as sure about in the beginning. She had her reasons for doing what she planned to do, but I kept expecting her to quit lying and come clean long before she did. If I were in her position, I probably would have stuck it out just as long as she did, but I still held out hope. In the end, she did the right thing, though, so she does have that going for her. Although she’s both troubled and in serious trouble, she really does care for both Lock and his brother, Leo.

Although the mystery of who really killed Tiffany was a little obvious, this isn’t the kind of book you read for the mystery. It’s the kind of book you read for the bonding, the friendship, and the budding love story. I especially enjoyed watching Lock and Leo repair their relationship that had been damaged for too many years. Well written and intense, Locked, Loaded and Lying is a story that kept me engaged until the very end.

A traumatic sexual assault alters a Talent’s identity and sends her on a journey for justice, and exploration of the new life before her.

Trigger warning: Some retelling of prior rape and its effects on the heroine.

Teagan Gibbs is an esteem Talent using her years of training, and sexual restraint to bring others justice until a botch clean-up job leaves her in need of some justice of her own. The effects of her traumatic assault leave her physically and mentally scared, but it isn’t just the intrusion of her virgin body that changes her forever. The effects on her powers are instant and irreversible. As she seeks to prove who the culprit behind her demise is, she is paired with the wealthy, charming, and surprising warm Oliver Derrington (Cransfield). They’ve worked together before, but not like this. Together, they give all of themselves to discover who has committed such a crime against Teagan, knowing what its effects would be and why they would commit such a heartless act. What Teagan discovers along the way is a part of herself she was never allowed to unlock. With every turn, she is freed a little more. With every twist, she comes closer to the woman she was meant to be, for herself and for Oliver.

My initial feel of the book was discomfort with such a traumatic catalyst. I believe it is due to the others uncanny ability to tell the story without aggressive details poured onto themselves. Instead, the reader is instantly focused on Teagan and her ability to pragmatically address her assault. She is clear headed or at least as clear headed as one could be after therapy. She isn’t in denial about what the assault has done to her, and mourns in her own way. However, she is not helpless. She uses the skills she still maintains in her diminished capacity to ensure that she is an active participant in bringing herself closure. She is smart, driven, and accepting of the changes she must make for her new life. Teagan is also practical and often uncomfortable with her emotions. She doesn’t gush over anything. Her admissions are quiet and face value honest as she attempts to understand her new normal. In some cases her fear is palpable, but in others it’s as if she’s never known fear in her life.

Oliver Derrington is a bonus she couldn’t have predicted would be a part of her life again. He is her strongest ally, works to understand how best to help her, and gives her space when she needs it. He reads her well, of course. I appreciated seeing his internal fight as he battled with wanting to protect her but not overwhelm her. He’s the type of hero that will wait for your call, before rushing to your rescue. He isn’t intrusive, feels things much deeper and quicker than Teagan, and trusts her instincts.

In Last Enchantment, first comes attraction then sex then love. Yet, their experiences together are not cheapened to some casual ill-timed fling. Instead, the decision is thoughtfully made and humbly accepted. Language is sexy, provocative, but rarely vulgar. There is more plot than sex, but tension holds true to erotica with warming build up as a constant reminder the hero/heroine attraction. Mild cases of head hopping appear in highly emotional scenes, but mostly as a means to describe something the original POV would not be able to explain on their own. Otherwise, the writing is fluid and each word carefully chosen to properly build attachment to the characters and drive the plot forward. The climb to the climax runs a bit long (over halfway through the book), but it doesn’t fast forward into completion once there. Instead, the descent is a gracefully slope down into what happens next before coming to a satisfying end.

In all, Last Enchantment was more of a complex thrill ride than a sultry erotica for me. The slight differentiation did nothing to diminish my enjoyment of the author’s delicate writing and riveting twists. I smiled, I winced, my heart broke, and I cheered for the complicated win. So I wasn’t disappointed that Last Enchantment didn’t strike me to wake up my husband in the middle of the night for some moonlight and lovemaking. Sometimes, a blush and a squirm is just as sufficient and this was one of those times. I recommend Last Enchantment to any reader who enjoys sexy exploration, with layers of thick plot, and tender romance. A great book club choice as there were multiple points where I would have liked to discuss my theories on the assailant or just commiserate with someone about Oliver’s ability to be all things at once. If you aren’t in a book club, enjoy in total silence with a glass of your favorite wine. Might I suggest a sweet red?

Mackenzie Steele assumed she’d be with her husband forever. He was her best friend, the father of her children. But when weeks turned into months without intimacy, she realized she was too young to feel so old. She wanted to feel desirable again, to find the woman Ryker had fallen in love with twenty years ago. And there was only one way she knew how to do that… by asking him to move out.

Ryker was blindsided when his wife told him she wanted to separate. He knew they’d hit a roughpatch, but he’d never allowed himself to imagine his life without her. Now he had no choice. Shewas happy without him, living life on her own terms, and he knew if he didn’t find a place for himself in her new life, it would be too late to save his marriage.

Certainly realistic and maybe a little close to home for those of us who’ve been married for a very long time, the conflicts in Ryker are largely internal, and based on what happens when a couple stops making an effort to keep their relationship fresh and new.

Mac realizes her marriage isn’t working, not like it was, so she decides to separate. Honestly, it was a little tough to read about, and also tough to sympathize with her. I’m a big believer that divorce is a last resort and usually reserved for things like abuse or infidelity, not for “I don’t know if I love you enough any more” or “I need to find myself.” So, Mac wasn’t my favorite person at first and she felt a little selfish, which I couldn’t really identify with. Yeah, they had problems, but a separation seemed a little extreme. She was pretty “me” focused at first, and that may appeal to some folks, and yes it was good to see her find some satisfaction out of her life again, but I still kept thinking she could have done it without sacrificing her marriage. Still, as I watched Ryker get his wake up call, it may have been required to really make him see that things needed fixing. Both she and Ryker were completely devoted to family, though, and that link helped keep them working toward a way to rebuild their relationship.

Thankfully, over time, I grew a bit more attached to Mac and enjoyed reading about her and Ryker. Sometimes the plot was a little draggy, and there honestly wasn’t a ton of conflict, but I never wanted to stop reading. I needed to make sure this couple was going to make it! There are sexy parts, which were hot but not over the top erotic. It was, I think, just the right amount of spice to add to the story, was never gratuitous and served to keep movement going forward (especially since lack of intimacy was one of the issues in their marriage).

All-in-all a solid, later in life story. Sort of refreshing, honestly, in a world full of twenty-something romance. The author has a solid grasp on the subject and I certainly enjoyed reading it. I understand there will be more stories about Ryker’s family, so I’m betting I’ll see Ryker and Mac again. It’ll be fun to see how they progress as more time passes.

But not everything is within Nera’s control. The unexpected happens on the Free Islands. Lives change, preconceived notations are blown away, and plans are ripped up. Will Nera get these independent islands? Or does fate have something else in store for them?

The Koenig Family have ruled the City for centuries and by their side stood Tiger’s family, ready to serve and assist.

Unfortunately the new mayor, Nera Koenig, is slightly unhinged. Tiger, her assistant, desperately tries to steer the mayor away from her disastrous intention to return the Rogue Islands to the fold. Many have tried over the centuries, but no one has succeeded in overturning the charter which protects the Rogue Islands from the City.

The people of the islands call their land the Free Islands. They appear to be long lived and do not take kindly to outsiders trying to infiltrate their community. Tourists are okay. Settlers are not allowed.

This is a three sided story. The mayor and her assistant, one trying to get the islands, the other trying to stop her boss doing something stupid. Then there’s the military chief who keeps a wary eye on the islands and her suspicions which become more fanciful as the story progresses. Then there’s Sheriff Albus Van and Lacey. Once they were in love but Lacey had left the Free Islands to see the world and Albus had stayed behind. Forty years later Lacey had returned but what would she find on the islands?

This was an intriguing book. There is obviously an underlying story to the islands, but the people protect their land and population by not allowing the City officials to interfere. I’m still a little confused by what the secret is, but guess future books will reveal this in more depth.

For now the story of the three protagonist parties was enough to keep me hooked. I’d like to read more of this series to find out what happens next. Plus I’d like to know more about the deer. Blue or green or yellow! Funny colors for deer, which indicates something sinister is happening. Good one Ms. Wilson, more please.

Free-spirited Lucy Westmore isn’t yet a spinster, although she fully intends to be. Fortunately, an eccentric aunt has left her both a diary detailing the secrets to spinsterhood and a cottage in Cornwall. Unfortunately, an insufferable marquess is angling for her prize! Turning Lord Thomas Branston down flat should be easy. So why does this man who won’t take no for an answer make Lucy’s body and soul sigh yes?

Thomas knows the real value of Heathmore Cottage, and he has no intention of letting some silly Society miss get her hands on it. He’ll simply have to charm Lucy into selling. But the clever young woman he encounters, first in London, then en route to Cornwall, stands stubbornly on her own two (quite lovely) feet. And now, Thomas can think only of sweeping her off them.

How many times do we romanticize something until it has no bearing on the truth? And what happens when faced with the reality of how things really are? That’s the impetus for one of the conflicts that propels this well told romance by Ms. McQuiston.

Lucy, the heroine, is faced with obeying the edicts of her parents, and dying inside, or taking the path less traveled, one she believes a barely known aunt actually lived. She was bequeathed diaries and a cottage and as far as she’s concerned, Lucy is going to choose to live the grand life of a spinster. She thinks she is armed with all the information she needs, written in her aunt’s own hand. The heroine’s rose-colored glasses slowly get a tint adjustment from the hero, Thomas.

Thomas wasn’t what I expected in a hero. He’s rather odd, reclusive and stuffy. He thinks he prefers life as he’s living it and that includes a secret. A secret that I admit to never even coming close to guessing correctly, and because of which, makes this a truly enjoyable read. I love being surprised.

The one thing that Lucy does to Thomas is make him feel. She challenges him, she thwarts him and she beguiles him to the point that he starts imagining seductive scenarios and having intriguing thoughts about having his way with her. It scares him silly, yet, he can’t stay away. That, of course, is too bad because Lucy wants nothing whatsoever to do with him, and that is another plot conflict that was rather fun to watch unfold. How she goes from not trusting him and despising him, to craving him is quite entertaining.

I waffled back and forth about whether or not her parents truly loved her or were using her as a pawn. I think it was a little bit of both, but I’ll let other readers decide for themselves. Certainly the author provided plenty of scenes and info to support both views. Eventually, there is mini HEA of a sort regarding that plot conflict, and I found its delivery engaging. The Spinster’s Guide to Scandalous Behavior is very much a character driven romance. Lucy was a bit too stubborn at times and I felt she should have given in just a bit earlier, like half a chapter’s worth, but then again, she wouldn’t be Lucy if she did cave. She’s quite the firecracker.

I liked the many humorous moments, some of the towns people, especially the orphans, and I very much enjoyed watching Lucy discover the many people in real life that she had only read about in her aunt’s diaries. That she knows their secrets when they don’t know her at all was a very clever bit of writing. I enjoyed seeing the heroine try to dig herself out of a hole when she said something about an event she should not nor could not have known. There were many pink-cheeked moments that made me smile.

Ms. McQuiston has written a charming, entertaining and clever romance that I very much enjoyed. The heroine has such an adventurous spirit that she compliments Thomas’s pragmatic and almost proper mien. The hero is Lucy’s rudder and rock, and she’s his life’s spice and dreams of adventure. Between the two of them, they make a miracle happen, and that’s about as romantic as it gets. The Spinster’s Guide to Scandalous Behavior is a book that is easy for me to recommend because it made me care for both Lucy and Thomas, and that’s a good thing.
