Jace Hadley took seriously his oath to protect and serve, most of the time. But there were times when all the trust bestowed upon him by that oath could be used to his advantage. An advantage he seized upon again and again to rid this world of arrogant women. The demons that haunted Nichols drove him to be the best homicide detective in the state. The one homicide that went cold on his watch was now joined by another that would become a cold case for years until a break that brought it to an unexpected close. The paths of the two officers, who had taken the same oath, would cross multiple times as the investigation unfolds. One as the cat. The other as the mouse. But, would the mouse ever be caught?

Each man took the same oath, an oath to uphold the law, to protect and serve the citizens of their fine city. Although both men said the same words, under the same circumstances and for the same reasons, each took a different direction once they placed that badge on their uniforms. What do you do when the bad guy is supposedly one of the good guys?

An Imperfect Oath is the kind of mystery novel that makes you think and keeps you thinking the entire time you’re reading. This is a story that covers the span of many years and sees many changes in not just the officers working the case, but also changes in the way that police work is done and evidence is handled. I was fascinated by watching the story evolve along with the techniques in crime fighting.

The good guy isn’t a perfect officer, but he does his best to do the right thing always. Serving justice is his job and it’s one he takes seriously. He makes his mistakes along the way but never loses sight of what’s most important. On the other hand, the bad guy is just that – a very bad guy. Armed with a badge and the idea that he’s the smartest, sneakiest man on the planet, he commits crime after crime fully believing that he’ll never be caught. Considering how long it takes to finally put all the pieces together, it’s easy to see why his confidence only grew.

I’ve always enjoyed reading stories about cold cases and the many ways forensics are used to solve them. An Imperfect Oath acted almost as a history lesson in how the science of forensics has evolved over the last thirty years from essentially nothing to opening a whole world of evidence you’d never even know was there. An engaging and page-turning story of two police officers, one on each side of the law, fighting against each other for the ultimate win.

On a hot, humid July 4th evening in Rosedale, Tennessee, a young man is dead on arrival at the hospital where Dr. Lucy Ingram works. Lucy recalls the affable young man, Chester Willis, from an earlier visit. The death is pronounced a suicide from an overdose of the insulin used to treat his diabetes, but Lucy isn’t convinced. The man just wasn’t the suicidal type. She pushes for another autopsy, and they find an injection site proving that someone else administered the deadly dose. Later in the week his ailing father dies as well. Now there is the matter of the father’s will.

Who stood to benefit if Chester was taken out of the equation? The easy answer is Chester’s brother Rick, who is in debt and has an expensive fiancée. Then there’s Brooke, the struggling massage therapist the old man befriended. The will has made her a wealthy woman.

Sheriff Ben Bradley and Lucy’s boyfriend chief detective Wayne Nichols are on the case, along with newly appointed investigator dory, Ben’s girlfriend Mae December, and the rest of Ben’s office staff. Soon they must accept that there will be no easy answers. The heat has tempers flaring, and Wayne, Ben, and Mae are distracted: Wayne by his changing relationship with Lucy and by having to cope with dark episodes from both their pasts, Ben and Mae by his reelection campaign and the couple’s upcoming wedding. Then there is cupcake, the new basset hound puppy owned by Ben s son Matthew, who becomes the fourth canine to take up permanent residence at Mae’s house.

He was a healthy young man who had diabetes and was here to care for his father who has congenital heart disease. And, yet, he was the one who died first…

The author does an amazing job of character development. There are a lot of players in this story but they are all interesting and it takes all their skills to determine Chester was murdered and who the killer was. I found myself caring about them all. I even enjoyed Mae’s four dogs.

Mae helps Sheriff Ben with his cases. She’s good at getting people to talk to her. When you add in a doctor and coroner and all the folks from the cop shop, Ben has a real good team. He’ll need it for this case. There’s a lot of action in this read and it all flows well. Ben has to sort out what he finds out and figure out what’s important and what’s not.

The old man knew he was getting close to death. He had made his will leaving the majority of his wealth to his two sons. When Chester died, he changed his will. The oldest son is trying to contest it after his father’s natural death. Was it one of the two inheritors that killed Chester? Who else would have cared about him?

There are secrets in everybody’s closet in this story. The author stayed ahead of me. I had one suspect, then another. It isn’t until the very end you get the motivation of the killer. This is a fast paced cozy that keeps your attention all the way through. I’ll be watching for more in this series.

”Playing the Piper” by May Williams (Contemporary-sensual)

Penny is a very entertaining heroine. Her inner thoughts and the things she writes in her diary never failed to bring a smile to my face. I love how good she is with her students. However, Penny is very insecure. She frequently jumps to conclusions about James and his motivations concerning her and the park she loves. I could understand her misgivings the first time around, but they seemed to straighten things out fairly quickly. Unfortunately at the very next sign of trouble, Penny is ready to believe the worst again. The situation Penny and James find themselves in is very difficult, but without trust they aren’t going to make it very far. Will Penny finally give James a chance or will she let her insecurities cloud her judgment?

Some of the secondary characters in this short story are very nasty at the beginning but undergo some dramatic changes by the end. I understood the reason for one character’s change, but some of the others changed very quickly and without much explanation. Consequently, I found those parts unrealistic.

I also think that Penny and James’ relationship progresses too quickly, especially given Penny’s inability to trust James. However, the ending was still sweet and the situation with the park is solved in an interesting and fun way.

“Just Right” by Arlene Hittle (Contemporary-sensual)

I truly felt sorry for Callie. She has fame, good looks, and money. From the outside, her life might look perfect. However, I don’t envy the price Callie has paid for fame. As I watched Callie struggle to manage her public persona versus her personal life, it was easy to see why she needed a vacation out of the spotlight.

Ty and his brothers are certainly an interesting group. They teased each other unmercifully, but they also cared for and looked out for each other. Callie was nothing like Ty expected her to be, and their first encounter with each other was anything but smooth. I could certainly sense some underlying chemistry. However, I found it very hard to get a sense of what kind of couple Callie and Ty will be. He is very jealous and possessive right from the start even though they don’t know each other very well. Most of their encounters are antagonistic despite their physical attraction. In spite of these issues, Ty is a good man who just wants to protect the woman he loves from the ugly side of the media.

I must say that I found the “happy for now” ending to be very realistic and a good solution for Callie and Ty. Callie’s schedule is very demanding and while being famous has definite drawbacks, she isn’t ready to leave the spotlight just yet. I’m not sure what the future will hold for this new couple, but I think they are on the right track.

“Red” by Maddie James (Paranormal-spicy)

“Red” was by far the most unusual story in this collection. There is a lot about Garnet’s world that I don’t understand. Even Garnet doesn’t seem to know much about it. I definitely think the magic and the history of Garnet’s family needed to be expanded in greater detail. While a bit of mystery is intriguing, Garnet was put in a position of making major, life changing decisions mere moments after learning that her family is much more than it seems. I understand that her family thought they were protecting Garnet by allowing her some time to live a normal life, but I think it is unfair to spring everything on her right before she’s called to make a monumental decision.

Garnet’s relationship with Max ignites from the moment they meet and the chemistry between them burns brighter with each turn of the page. Sex between them is nothing short of scorching. However, I do wish they had had more time to get to know each other. Unfortunately time is something neither of them seem to have. Does Garnet make the right choice, or will the night end in disappointment?

“Death Sat Beside Her” by Jennifer Anderson (Suspense-sensual)

Elysse is a sweet girl, but she is stuck conforming to her mother’s idea of what a young lady should be. Her mom strikes me as very old fashioned and controlling. I know that her mother loves her, but it was clear to me that Elysse was struggling to gain her mother’s approval and was losing her individuality in the process.

Everything changes when Liam walks into her life. The attraction between them is clear from the start. Unfortunately, Elysse has a boyfriend. As I read, I wasn’t sure how the love triangle was going to play out. I can’t give any details without ruining the story, but I will say that I found it very easy to cheer for Liam.

I enjoyed watching Elysse begin to distance herself from the carefully crafted image she’s maintained for so long. Elysse says she’s making the changes because she wants too, but I couldn’t help but wonder if Elysse was simply trying to remake herself into the kind of girl she thought Liam would like.

It was very easy for me to figure out who the murderer was. The suspense of this story came from not knowing who the next victim would be and wondering when Liam and Elysse would put all the pieces of the puzzle together. The conclusion is very satisfying, and I have no doubt that Liam and Elysse are well on their way to a happy ending.

“Sins of the Father” by Janet Eaves (Contemporary-spicy)

Aurora has led a very sheltered life thanks to her overprotective aunts. I must admit that I’m not entirely sure why Aurora’s family went to such great lengths to insulate her from the world. There is some violence in Aurora’s past, but she was too young at the time to remember anything and drastic steps were taken to conceal Aurora’s identity. Aurora certainly needed some degree of protection, but the situation with the aunts just didn’t sit right with me.

Consequently, it is very easy to understand Aurora’s powerful urge to break away. I do think she made some very poor decisions in the process. She is very trusting of Philip, a man she knows nothing about, and she puts herself in an extremely vulnerable position. Fortunately, Philip is a very nice guy, and I enjoyed watching Aurora and Philip relax in each other’s company.

As the story progressed, and the truth of Aurora’s past is revealed, Ms. Eaves did a good job of building the suspense. When Aurora finally learns about her parents and who Philip is, I couldn’t wait to find out what their next step would be. Unfortunately, the story ended at this point. I must admit to being disappointed as I had hoped for a more satisfying conclusion.

“Dixie White and the Seven Dates” by Cat Shaffer (Contemporary-Sweet)

Dorothea’s story is easily my favorite from this anthology. She had my sympathy from page one when she learns some ugly things about her boyfriend. Rather than wallow in self pity, Dorothea decides to take control of her life for the first time. As I read, I had the pleasure of watching Dorothea blossom into a vibrant, caring young woman I’d be proud to call a friend. It took courage for Dorothea to walk away from everything she’s ever known. Fortunately, Dorothea discovers a wonderful small town in Kentucky that nurtures her new found desire to grown and change.

Ms. Shaffer did an excellent job creating the charming small town of Cardington, Kentucky, and most of the people who lived there were just as lovely, especially Lou and Len. Without their support and encouragement, Dorothea’s quest for independence would have been much more difficult.

The blind dates Dorothea goes on are entertaining. However, the men she met seemed more like caricatures rather than real people. Some of the dates were better than others, but I wasn’t surprised that Dorothea didn’t really click with any of them.

Rick is definitely a great guy. He and Dorothea are very comfortable around each other, and they have the beginnings of great chemistry. Their slow dance is particularly memorable. I have no doubt that they will grow into a wonderful couple.

I enjoyed reading And They Lived Happily Ever After. Each story is different with a unique take on various classic fairy tales. I recommend this collection to anyone who enjoys contemporary romance.

Her love interest is Caleb, a FBI agent who once helped to ground Destin until their nasty breakup. When the two are thrown together to solve another case, they risk everything to catch a rapist bent on terrorizing college girls.

Sexy moments between Destin and Caleb, loads of tension, the thrill of the chase and an introduction to how a psychic agency functions all made this a red hot read I wanted to curl up in bed with. The way the author captured the feelings of the victims, the absolute absorption of each experience by the investigator and the emotional scars felt by each character-wow. I want more.

The second book is The Innocent and centers on a town called Hell, Georgia. Jay is a psychic who gleans information from touching things. Gloves are a must. When she journeys to Hell to find out why her internet love interest has dumped her, she finds more than she bargained for. Linc, the former sheriff is fit to be tied. His daughter is missing and now Jay has come to visit. But is she here for him or his daughter? He can’t be sure-especially when he finds out about her abilities.

This tale is also smoking hot with a love scene that melted my e-reader around the edges. Nice. It was also a page turner for the crime solving aspect. A missing girl in a town known for its crooked players. The elite team that comes in to save them all is epic and I can’t wait for the next installment of this series.

These two novels were jam packed with psychic investigations and a sense that time was of the essence. The author did a marvelous job crafting characters I couldn’t get enough of and each time the book ended, I wanted to start reading again. Hot scenes, spot on dialog, world building that rocked, characters that breathed off the page.

Five star awesomeness! I highly recommend this read.

Janet Ennis tragically died five years ago in what the police labeled an accidental fire. But Janet’s mother, Nora, believes it to be murder and arson. And she’s hoping ex-cop Michael McLaren can prove it quickly, for she’s losing her memory to dementia. As McLaren pokes through the case details, he becomes emotionally involved with the dead woman. Yet, Janet isn’t the only person who threatens his mental well-being. A series of arsons on his own property hint that he’s upset someone connected with this case.

Motives for Janet’s murder rise like the smoky tendrils of a fire. And, motive aside, the murder scene seems a bit too pat: a drought-stricken landscape eager to lap up flames and a conveniently locked door barring Janet’s escape.

Shadow in the Smoke presents main character Michael McLaren; a quiet, intelligent but reflective soul, who’s personality could be straight out of any 20th century British detective story.

He insists he’s not a private detective–not a licensed one, anyway. However, he’ll admit the odd case has “fallen into his lap.” He’s not the positive, arrogant solver of crime many of his ilk are. He’s not a genius, nor especially tough…’no Philip Marlowe,’ to be sure.

But he’s persistent. He’s sympathetic. And more importantly, he’s thoughtful. As he begins to pursue clues, we too see them and come to understand the import of each.

The challenge is obvious at once; unexplained death. Hiestand presents the victim’s mother sympathetically; she may or may not have a point, but her feelings are real. Readers find themselves touched as much as intrigued. McLarren is touched as well, and spurred on by a lovely, velvety voice from the past.  He’s also deterred by his own past, like his old boss, the detective-Inspector.

A lot happens around the fittingly rainy Village of Darleycote; and there are occasional moments of suspense, but mostly, readers will find themselves puzzling out the mystery and enjoying the characters.

Shadow in the Smoke presents a truly original investigative main character, a wonderful study of human emotion and motivation, and a perfectly satisfying mystery. This reader is excited to find a wonderful addition to the classic British mystery! Five stars and an absolute must read for fans of Agatha Christie, Naio Marsh and the like.

Not everyone’s adjustment to the afterlife is smooth. What happens to the people who refuse to walk into The Light?

Change is scary. One of the things I enjoyed the most about this novel was how it explored why people are so afraid of new things and what happens when someone is caught off guard by it. I was especially intrigued by how the different characters reacted to circumstances that were sometimes similar to one another. No two people will necessarily respond the same way to the same sequence of events. It was interesting to see how their personalities and past experiences influenced their reactions to these scenes.

This book had a tendency to tell the reader what was happening instead of showing it to us. The characters themselves were well done, but I never had the chance to figure out what it was that made them so fascinating for myself because the narrator told me just about everything there was to know about them as soon as they were introduced. This tendency also extended to the plot itself. The premise was great, but I wasn’t able to immerse myself in what was happening because so much of it was revealed upfront.

The plot twists were nicely done. While I saw some of them coming ahead of time, there were also a few surprises along the way that I never would have expected from this tale. The author seemed to have an intuitive understanding of what the audience was expecting from her, and she knew exactly when to give to those expectations as well as when she should ignore them. Her creativity in this area makes me curious to see what she will come up with next!

I’d recommend At the Corner of Magnetic and Main to anyone who is in the mood for a romantic ghost story that isn’t frightening at all.

Southern Belle Camilla Lind, meets her Midwest match in Jared Richardson as she fights to prove she is worthy of redemption, love, and her very own happily ever after.

You never forget Camilla is from the south and very proud of it. If the author isn’t outright telling the reader, then Camilla happily fills the void one way or another. Camilla didn’t have far to fall when she slipped from grace, but in the years since committing what she feels is the ultimate betrayal, she’s worked hard to prove she isn’t her past. Which completely explains why she has no time for blue-eyed, breathe stealing cowboy Jared, or repeating any of the mistakes that made her flee her deep southern roots. She has done what she set out to do with her time away from the bayous, and her proper southern upbringing, but now her heart is telling her it’s time to go back. Jared is the ultimate in distractions, but Camilla is desperate to resist his charms. She has too much to lose, or rather too much to gain by walking away sooner than later. In her attempts to help another young woman from making her mistakes, Jared gets her right where he wants her. He courts her proper, pulling from his deep roots. Camilla struggles to believe his motives are pure, but in the end her private thoughts are the real threat to their being together. With Hurricane Katrina barreling down on her beloved homestead in the meantime, all Camilla can think about is what she stands to lose.

Bayou Beckons is book three from Linda Joyce’s Fleur de Lis Series, and with it comes a new set of complications. Camilla’s internal dialogue as she struggles to believe she’s as far removed from her party girl, no holds barred reputation, is earnest. She knows she’s grown, but isn’t sure it is enough to get her the results she wants. The greater issue comes from her inability to understand that she deserves forgiveness, and moving on with her life doesn’t make her bad person. She’s hardworking, quick on her feet, and has tunnel vision when it comes to moving back home. If only she could get out of her head and realize redemption is a noble thing to seek. Her shame cocoons around her and spoils any thoughts she has about a life without it looming over her head. She’s pretty lucky that Jared is as stubborn as he is handsome. His past has just as powerful a hold on him as Camilla’s has on her, but he knows the real thing when he sees it. The more she pulls away, the more he seeks to show her through chivalry and genuine affection that what they can have together could save them both.

Camilla and Jared are the types of lovers I find myself rooting for endlessly. They address their personal struggles in a real fashion. Confusion, optimism, self-doubt, and aching desire to be found worthy muddles the water as they try to determine where they fit into each other lives. Camilla is the more desperate of the two. I love how the author juxtaposed the confident and strong willed exterior with her softer, insecure interior. In true southern belle form, she is all these things at once. Time and again she proves she is fiercely capable of taking care of business whatever that may mean at the time, and then we see the reverse. As she attempts to make heads or tails of what she feels for Jared, she has to also come to terms about how she feels about herself. She’s my favorite kind of heroine, due to her complexity. It is only right that Jared has just as many layers. Except where Camilla is uncertain, Jared has never been surer. He is precisely the type of man who could whether the intricate emotional responsibilities that come with loving an unapologetically southern woman.

Linda Joyce is careful to let the characters speak for themselves instead of telling them what to do. Every choice made is unequivocally their own and it shows. Each scene fluidly blends into the next giving the reader more and more insight into the tangled personal webs our hero and heroine have created. They are strong because they’ve had to make hard choices. They are engaging because they seek to show the best parts of themselves while still being honest about their flaws. Most of all, they are human in their reactions and likable. It is completely believable that nearly every piece of dialogue from Camilla is dripping with southern charms and anecdotes. In turn, Jared’s falling for her because of what she represents for him is just as easy to believe. Bayou Beckons is a leisurely and solid read with an intriguing plot. It is interesting enough to rush to the finish, but definitely should be enjoyed on an easy Sunday morning with coffee and comfy pajamas. A leap into Bayou Beckons allows the readers to swim in what happens when fierce loyalty, the capacity to change, and the will to be forgiven collide. It is a true redemption story for all romance lovers to enjoy.

Evil ghosts, mystery, murder and mayhem await documentary film producer Paul Barlowe, his wife Sam, and their teenage son Andy when they arrive in Lancaster County, PA, from Chicago, to shoot a film on local history. Sam becomes the victim of Amalie Broome, circa 1867, tormented by past mysteries and determined to destroy Phineas, her husband, whose ghost lives in the other side of the house, and take Sam’s life as her own. To survive Sam must enter a world where folklore, spells, Pow-Wow faith healers and witches are taken for granted. Only the wisdom of an elderly seer will save them from destruction by the spirits that claim them.

Some ghosts are kind and friendly. Others, not so much.

Let’s look at some common thoughts about this phenomenon. cialis soft tablets Kindly note: There are sure conditions where this item might be risky. djpaulkom.tv cialis pills canada The setting was deliciously frightening. I was especially fascinated by the narrator’s description of the house Samantha and Paul rented. I’ve seen houses with similar designs in real life, and they’ve always made me shiver. There’s something inherently creepy to me about squishing more than one architectural style into the same building, especially when so little care is taken to blend them together in any coherent manner. It seems to give a house more than one personality, and those personalities don’t always mesh well with each other.

There were far more reasons for these characters to abandon the old farm house than there were for them to stay there. The warning signs popped up so early in the plot that I had a hard time understanding why Paul and Samantha didn’t decide to find a different place to live, especially since they were accompanied by their young son. It’s certainly what I would have done if the place I was planning to stay made me as afraid of it as they were on their first visit!

Not every afterlife is a pleasant experience. One of the things I relished the most about this tale was how it explored what the afterlife was like for the ghosts that were connected to the farmhouse. Their backstories were explained early enough for me to understand why they behaved in certain ways but also late enough for me to build anticipation about what their lives might have been like when they were alive.

I would have liked to have more information about Samantha and Paul’s marriage. The communication between them left quite a bit to be desired. There were times when I wondered how they’d stayed together for so long because they seemed to have so many problems telling each other what they were really thinking and feeling. It might have made sense for a brand new couple, but it felt odd for two people who are raising a child and who have been together for many years to struggle so much in this area.

The secondary characters were lively and colorful. Seeing how they interacted with the main characters as well as with one another was a highlight of this story for me. Their occasional eccentricities made perfect sense given the culture of Lancaster, the town where this all takes place. I wouldn’t have expected anything else from this community.

The Haunting of Aaron House is a good choice for anyone who is in the mood for something romantic and paranormal.

Tessa’s allies, including her mate Dastien, are ready to fight, but they’re no match for Luciana’s power. A little help (and ancient Inca mojo) from Tessa’s cousin, Claudia, may give the side of good a chance if she can make it home in time, but stopping the war is no longer an option.

As a fan of the Alpha Girl Series, my expectations were met and exceeded with this latest installment. Finally, finally the confrontation between good and evil, heroine and villain, takes place and it’s every bit as exciting and nail biting as I could have wished.

Alpha Unleashed is the fifth book in the series and is not a standalone. For a reader to understand what is at stake, to understand the pain of friends lost, horrors visited and challenges overcome, one has to read the entire series, books 1-4, to experience the immense impact book five has for a follower of the plot arc and the heroine, Tessa and her alpha hero, Dastien. It’s told from first person POV and the author never missed a beat because a reader only knows what Tessa knows which left both of us open to the surprises and emotional challenges that pepper the novel.

All the loose ends get wrapped up in this final novel with regards to Luciana. That witch is vile, vindictive, determined and not quite herself; certainly not as any of her coven knew her to be, which is quite the surprise later on in the book. There is good news about Raphael, fascinating intrigue with the introduction of Van and his association with Cosette, Tessa and Dastien’s bond is finally sealed, but not done quite as expected and through it all, Tessa’s family provides the unconditional love and support that gives the heroine strength, and the story heart and grounding. Family is important – Tessa’s family and her pack family, and they’re worth fighting and dying for.

There is action galore especially in the final battle. There are many moments of suspense, of not knowing who will make it, what potions will work, who the enemies from within are, and who else will die. Not to mention the fact that the biggest kept secret is let out of the bag and the ramifications are almost overwhelming for Tessa, who for all intents and purposes, is still a teenager. Talk about growing up fast!

Tessa and Dastien are still wonderful together. The author focuses mostly on their relationship and the action, not so much on their love life, which is fine for me. The strength and support Dastien provides is immense but I adore their bantering, those moments of light humor and teasing and how Tessa is affected by just looking at her hero’s yummy abs. Those were fun scenes, special scenes, and they personified what was at stake if she and her allies failed to defeat Luciana.

Alpha Unleashed totally wowed me. Every question I had, every wish I hoped, all were more than met and I’m a very happy reader. The Alpha Girl Series was discovered by accident and it’s the best book series I’ve come across in quite some time. It’s unique, intelligent, meaty, romantic, action packed and it grips a reader’s imagination. It’s symbolizes the battle between good and evil and even though the heroes and heroines mostly wear fur instead of the requisite white hat, they get the job done. This is a well written novel and a compliment to the rest of the series – the cake topper, if you will. I heartily recommend this novel, and this series.
