All three of the main characters were incredibly well-written, especially Tom. His voice was more mature than I’d expect from someone of his age, but given everything I learned about how hard his life had been before he met his double this made a great deal of sense. I can’t say why this is so without giving away spoilers. You’ll simply have to trust me that there was an excellent reason for a young character who spoke like someone much older than his chronological age. Figuring out what it was made it impossible for me to stop reading until I’d reached the exciting conclusion.

I would have liked to see a little more time spent developing the ending. While I did appreciate the open-ended nature of it, it would have been helpful for there to have been a bit more energy spent exploring the various possible conclusions before asking the audience to decide which one we thought would fit the characters the best. Had there been one or two more examples of that, this would have been a five-star book in my opinion!

The world building made me wish this was a full-length novel. Everything from the community’s reaction to the other Tom to their explanations for who or what that boy might be was explained in the perfect amount of detail. I loved figuring out why they responded the way that they did and if their guess was something I agreed with. There was so much going on with the background characters when it came to this topic that I could picture all of their interactions with Tom’s family in precise detail. This made it all an incredibly interesting thing to read.

Tom, Thom should be read by anyone who loves old legends and fairy tales.

As he helps his new vampire-like friends save his own people, he can’t help but become emotionally involved, especially when it comes to the disturbingly appealing Demi. Biology forces both their hands, but Trey and Demi are still worlds apart in what they see as their future together. When their enemy’s legacy comes back to haunt them, it’s up to them to lead the way.

Detective Trey Duncan has tried his hardest to not act on his attraction to the young hybrid Demi but no matter how hard he tries there is no denying the pull that he feels towards the young man. When Demi’s parents ask Trey to help Demi into adulthood Trey reluctantly agrees thinking his emotions will get in the way of Demi’s growing up. Demi knows what he wants and that is Trey. He is not going to give up on his dreams and that includes a life with Trey. As Demi and Trey try to figure it all out danger comes calling. It seems that they may still have an enemy out there that is determined to find a way to take over.

I have enjoyed watching Trey and Demi’s relationship develop throughout this series and it was nice to see the two get their story told. Trey has been trying so hard to be the noble one and not act on his attraction to Demi who he sees as too young but each time that Trey helps the aliens, he finds himself loosing that battle.

Demi is not as young as he looks. Being a hybrid, he has aged much differently and must do things to fit in to the human world. I enjoyed seeing the true Demi behind the façade, he is a smart man who cares deeply. When Trey lets his guard down, we see the depth of his love for Demi. He has always shown he cares for the man, but we see that it goes so much deeper. It was nice to see the two men find their way towards a happy ever after. As they work towards it, they must also find a way to find and fight their enemy.

The author has done a good job of keeping this series fresh and engaging for the reader. With each book we see the aliens defeat more and more of the enemy and each of them find their happy ever after’s. This book is a nice addition to the series and gives readers a beautiful story that has been in the making for some time. Trey and Demi make a wonderful couple and I enjoyed seeing their story come alive in this book.

In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is planned – from the layout of the winding roads, to the colors of the houses, to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules.

Enter Mia Warren – an enigmatic artist and single mother – who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenaged daughter Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons. Soon Mia and Pearl become more than tenants: all four Richardson children are drawn to the mother-daughter pair. But Mia carries with her a mysterious past and a disregard for the status quo that threatens to upend this carefully ordered community.

When old family friends of the Richardsons attempt to adopt a Chinese-American baby, a custody battle erupts that dramatically divides the town–and puts Mia and Elena on opposing sides. Suspicious of Mia and her motives, Elena is determined to uncover the secrets in Mia’s past. But her obsession will come at unexpected and devastating costs.

Little Fires Everywhere explores the weight of secrets, the nature of art and identity, and the ferocious pull of motherhood – and the danger of believing that following the rules can avert disaster.

There is a lot going on in this book.

I picked this up because it was recommended to me. It’s also set in a town, Shaker Heights, that’s not far from me. So it was a little like reading about places I knew. A little. It’s set in the late 90’s. I knew that time well.

The Richardson children and Pearl are interesting characters. In one way, they’re stereotypes of kids from that era. They could kind of be stereotypes of kids right now, too. Izzy is the kid who colors outside of the lines–all the time. Moody follows the rules to a T. Tripp is the quintessential jock who thinks of no one but himself. Lexie is the self-absorbed rich girl who has dreams only fit for a teenager. Then there’s Pearl. She’s been sheltered for a long time and when she finally comes out of her shell, she still isn’t sure who she wants to be.

Now don’t think this story is only about the kids. The city of Shaker and its planning plays a role in this book. Lots of things in life are planned–school, activities, graduation…when to have kids. But a lot of things can’t be controlled. That’s the overriding theme of this book–you can try to control a lot, but that’s when the great unknown throws curveballs to make sure you’re paying attention.

There are a few side stories in this book and each shows how the characters grow through the story. I liked and didn’t like how they changed. Some came into their own, while others seemed even more lost. I have to say Moody, the younger son, was my favorite because I saw a lot of my own tot in this young man. He wanted to be loved, followed the rules and seemed to be the most invisible.

If you’re looking for a novel that’s heavy on character and good for an afternoon read, then this might be the book for you.

I enjoyed the interplay between Tariq and Laurel. They aren’t totally made for each other to begin with and have to work through not only medical issues she’s researching, but the idea of being together before they can have a happy ending.

One thing I love about Carlisle’s stories is the emotion involved. I knew exactly how each character felt and what they were going through. Another thing I love is that there will be a happy ending. It’s wonderful. It’s like reading a hug.

First-time explorations won’t come easy. But they just might be deliciously worth it.

The hardest part of living in a small town is being forced to hide who you truly are.

The setting was nicely written. As someone who has lived in a small town before, I thought the author did a good job of capturing what that experience is like for people who don’t fit the mold in some way. It can be a lonely way to live, so I appreciated the fact that Camille and Kayla talked about this and compared notes in the first couple of scenes. It made their later interactions even more meaningful than they might have otherwise been.

I would have liked to see a little more attention paid to developing the beginning of this tale. Everything moved so quickly then that I didn’t feel like I’d gotten to know the characters as well as I would have preferred to by the time the plot picked up. With that being said, this is a minor criticism of something I otherwise liked reading quite a bit.

Kayla and Camille has fantastic chemistry. I could feel the sparks igniting between them from the very first scene, and it only made me more curious to see how they’d react to each other once they were able to finally spend some time alone together. The build up in tension between them couldn’t have been handled better, and it is one of the many things that’s going to make me want to read more from this author in the future.

Louisiana Heat was a short, steamy read that should be checked out by anyone who is intrigued by the blurb.

What Brennon wasn’t prepared for was the knowledge that testing had progressed far beyond what they’d expected, successfully splicing human and shifter DNA already. Brennon also hadn’t expected to find himself so taken with one of the captives when they raid the laboratory. Can they stop this evil in time?

This is the second book in the series and while I have read the first installment I was relieved that the author explained plenty of where things stood so that this book could effectively stand by itself. I feel that readers looking to read this book alone shouldn’t have any problems catching up.

While the theme of splicing shifter DNA and doing testing on human (and shifter) subjects isn’t exactly new, and the experimentation isn’t overly graphic in its detail – readers who are sensitive to this sort of subject mightn’t find the story suits their tastes. While the romance that blossoms between Mikki and Brennon is hot, intense and deep Mikki was experimented on and Brennon is a shifter who is spear-heading the breaking down and shutting of the laboratory and tracking the Doctor in charge of these proceedings, so that aspect of the plot is quite deep, complicated and detailed throughout the story. I personally found everything to be written in good taste and not too over the top or gory/graphic with the details. Other readers might feel the descriptions are a little much – so that might be a consideration.

Personally I thoroughly enjoyed the plot, and was pleased it wasn’t merely a token effort to give some aim to the romance. I feel the author did a good job explaining what was going on and detailing the layout of the laboratory. I didn’t feel quite as comfortable with the pacing of the story – it felt choppy and uneven in a few places to me but particularly when Brennon and Max were going through the laboratory – it felt suitably tense and rush-rush-rush, but then suddenly they could slow down and have a chat with the random captive – Mikki – whom they found. Then they found her clothes and food – even offering her a chance to shower, until they realized the danger and precarious position they were in. The sudden shift back to rush-rush-rush just had the whole scene feel a bit uneven.

I was really pleased that, while a large portion of the story was from Brennon’s perspective, we did get a few chapters from Mikki’s point of view too. When the heroine was first introduced I didn’t really understand what on earth was going on with her. She appeared to be a human woman who had been kidnapped, imprisoned, had tests and experiments performed on her and then thrown her lot in with a random stranger (who claimed to be a hawk shifter on top of everything) and trusted them instead of fleeing for the nearest police station and safe haven the moment she was released. More importantly, I didn’t understand how she could grow to have romantic (let alone sexual) feelings for this man whom she had never seen or met before. It was a lot for me to take on in a very short length of time and so hearing directly from her helped ease a lot of my concerns.

I loved the plotting, finding it complex and not just a token effort. I enjoyed the characters, though they’re not the usual sort and I’m not certain they will be to everyone’s tastes – I was pleased to get on board with Brennon and Mikki and ended up very satisfied with their romance and the chemistry in their sexual relationship. I was pleased that there wasn’t too much graphic detail of the experiments and craziness in the laboratory. I feel it would have been too easy for the author to dwell too much on that and it’s not what I want highlighted in my romantic fiction reads.

Different and very well put together, I feel this will be a great read for many people. I’m pleased I have read it and will be keeping an eye out for any future installments.

A werewolf, a witch, and a vampire walk into a murder scene . . .

Sgt. Marilyn Jaye of Supernatural Oversight (the investigative unit for all things which bump a bit too much in the night) is having a frustrating day. What should have been a simple case of a murdered ghoul has spun entirely out of control. It’s bad enough that she’s getting distracted from her investigations by her unreasonable attraction to Henry, a young werewolf with a terrible case of PTSD (Post-Turn Stress Disorder), especially since every Tom, Fang, and Hairy (previously known as her sensible friends) tells her she’s destined to be with him. Worse, her distraction allows a second murder victim to turn up, one of the gentlemanly Victorian vampires who lives in Highgate Cemetery. If that isn’t enough, the vicious werewolf who attacked and turned Henry is still on the loose. London’s creatures of the night seem to be in trouble, and it’s her job to protect them.

Marilyn is determined to find the killer and the rogue wolf, but she’ll need a lot of help. That will include her friends, Hanover (Henry’s handsome Alpha and Marilyn’s ex-lover) and Julius Beer (a vampire who watches over his distressed comrades in Highgate from his ornate mausoleum). Also alternately helping or annoying her are the other members of the S.O., including her powerful sorcerer boss, the eternal spirit of Romantic poet William Blake, her ex-NYPD partner, a pool (yes, an actual pool) of secretarial sirens, and an imp who’s in love with a cat. Even Henry has to tag along. And they better solve the case soon, because the killer has made it clear that she’s the next target.

A mystery novel that is full of supernatural creatures protecting the humans from the crimes of the creatures that go bump in the night.

The suspects are few, the clues confusing and people are not what they seem. The characters are fun and incredibly strong, and each one is complemented by the others, a true team. I loved Marilyn, as she is strong enough to face her destiny head on, overcoming the obstacles and helping Henry to make sure he stays stable. She hates it when anyone comes to save her as she is more then able to do so, but she does make an exception for Henry.

Henry has gone through so much in just 6 months it would have made a lesser man go insane. His turning was traumatic, but also shows what kind of man he is. He ran toward a screaming woman and tried to save her from the rabid werewolf.

The relationship between Henry and Marilyn is so sweet. They gather strength from each other. They are constantly holding hands and anytime Henry is uncomfortable she is there to soothe him. He needs that comfort when his past comes back to haunt him. Due to the murders, Henry’s family is being guarded in case the attacker goes after them.

The only thing that threw me a bit was the story could be slow moving at times. Also, even though Marilyn is supposed to be smart, she is a bit bubble-headed at times.

The ending is not what I expected and things turn out in a way that I could not have dreamed of. The strength each character shows and the way they work together makes this a worthy novel to read.

This is such a fun series. The details in the world-building never fail to amaze.

It was enjoyable to see the hero, Luca, try to follow orders. My reasoning is because he’s capable of doing things regular folks can’t and yet, he wants to belong so he curbs his natural inclinations, well, as much as he could. I could sense his frustration, his earnest willingness to ‘do’ something and being stymied because he has to follow protocol. The author clearly illustrated how exasperating it is to always have to follow rules. Rules that slow the progress down, preventing action, and Luca is all about action. Readers will find out just how rules and protocol can be used for ill instead of good. It made perfect sense then that the hero is left chomping at the bit. Like the blurb said, he’s trying to find a missing child and that’s a great reason to want action. Now.

I really liked Luca and Dawn’s first meeting. It made an impression and it brought the reader into the story that begins unfolding from that point. Practically everyone is on stage and by chapter 3, I was completely hooked. What will it take to find the little girl? Who took her? Why? Will she be rescued? How, and by who? The additional suspense spiced up the plot and provided opportunities for the hero and heroine to see in each other their strengths, and even weaknesses. That relationship give and take was what I liked about the couple.

If anyone has been reading the series, then you know about the goddesses. Suffice to say, they were quite the helpers. But of course, they have pizzazz and flair whenever they’re on scene.

As for the villain who caused all the grief, fear and mayhem, I kind of figured it was going to get serious when Luca was tasered. I cringed on his behalf. Since this is a romance story with a happy ending, the villain has to be caught and brought to justice. Comeuppance was delivered upon the villain, but considering the damage done and how the felonious blackguard played fast and loose with so many lives — spending a little extra time explaining why the punishment fit the crime, because I didn’t get it, would have been most welcome. I wanted to feel … more vindicated. I wanted to see the criminal suffer a bit more because the fallout touched so many people. It was incredibly heartbreaking. In fact, the scene with the desolate father was truly genius because his pain came right off the page. So, yeah, I really wanted to bask in justice being served. Also, I wanted more proof that Rita was taking concrete-to-the-reader steps that showed just how strongly the heroine’s effect was on the little girl. I was quite taken with how Dawn approached her and the girl’s reaction. I know it would have made the book longer, but I would have been fine with that.

Gabriella and Antonio are the best parents in the world. They have such a capacity for love; with role models like them, it’s not a wonder Dawn fell for Luca. Adding to the ‘awww’ factor was how they dealt with Dawn’s grandma.

Like I said, this romance story has a happy ever after, and Ms. Chase used the final chapter to wrap up all the threads with one, big, glittery bow of happiness. It was like a giant epilogue and I couldn’t ask for more. Luca’s romance with Dawn is a must read. Fans of the series have a wonderful experience in store when they pick up their own copy of A Phoenix Is Forever.
