The first story has a conniving little sister, the second has a misunderstanding about who the hotel manager is, and the third has God and the Devil trying to influence a man’s actions. How could you not like reading this collection? It has something for everyone!

Ms. Metzger writes light, humorous stories about love. She draws you in, entices you with details and makes you love her characters. These three novellas will demonstrate her skill to you and make you smile as you read them.

The first story, Autumn Glory, is about a mother who is going to marry her daughter’s off so she can have some freedom. She loves them, but the oldest is almost a spinster and she won’t stand for that. As long as she’s playing match mate, she might as well get them all lined up. The most amusing part of this story is the fact that the man she is working with in her planning is the unseen male that her mother has chosen for her older sister. She tells him how awful that person is while not realizing who he is. That really tickled me!

The Management Requests has a wounded soldier who is staying at the hotel to get away from his sister-in-law and her demands. He has to stay downstairs because of his leg, there are no rooms left there, and he pays a premium to take over the office. Just how that complicates his life is unexpected and takes the form of a young woman looking for a beau who only wanted her money. The dance between those two and the chapters being titled with management requests is great.

My personal favorite though was A Match Made in Heaven or Hell. A soldier is close to death on the field and God and the Devil are fighting over who gets him. How much more fantastic a plot can you imagine? Hugh will never be the same again and that’s a good thing!

Are you looking for a fun easy read that you fit in between present wrapping and cooking? Look no further. These stories have been gathered from out of print anthologies and presented in a new edition for you. I really enjoyed this collection and it was a fast read. You need to give it a try.

Can love survive lies and secrecy?

Juliana Hastings is heart broken by her father’s death, which has left her destitute. To make matters worse she is jilted by her fiancé. She takes a position as a governess to Matthew MacDonald’s nephew in Scotland. Love is the last thing on her mind, but her heart has other plans. And Matthew doesn’t make things easier with his growing attraction to her.

He turns to the only one he knows he can trust for help—Juliana. But when he is captured, he thinks she has betrayed him. Once free, he’s determined to find the woman he loves and make her suffer for her actions.

Dramatic settings completely overshadowed by even more dramatic people characterize this gripping historical romance slash action novel. Baron Bonnliegh, Matthew, marches through the city streets and laughs easily into the face of danger. He’s more than equal to any threat, or so it seems.

Our heroine is no shrinking violet either. Juliana proves her courage just in setting off into a whole new life, when her own life drastically changes, rather beyond her control. She sets off to make the most of her one opportunity – and predictably, bumps straight into this incredibly confident Baron. There is a moment there that we see coming. ‘Ah ha – another predictable tale,’ we wonder..for barely the space of a sentence, for few things go as we might foresee.

Like so many a governess, Julianna becomes admirably fond of her charge, wicked Scottish Island home notwithstanding. Her attraction to Matthew is also undeniable – yet his own circumstances might suddenly be a little ‘beyond his control.’ Even more surprising is who he chooses to blame. Warnings come to him – veiled perhaps (like, ‘Your luck is bound to change!’ while gambling) but he never worries.

Matthew is a man of action as well as conviction. He might be a tiny a bit lacking in sympathy (we readers won’t feel frustrated with his leap to a certain conclusion only once…) but he is a towering figure and you will lose your heart to him immediately. Julianna is equally likable, just for her attitude.

I originally assigned this brilliant and fast paced read a 5. Great, gripping, fast… and I forget to write the review. 2 weeks later I find I still have recall of the story – of the characters especially – and don’t mind picking it up for a second look at all! That rates somewhere higher than a 5, I am sure – Do put this on your reading list.

Karen Brown works hard to make her own way in New York, present day, alternate reality, but when her life is threatened after a kidnapping attempt, she must make a decision to stay and be eliminated by a brutal government enforcer, or renounce her citizenship and flee to the land where her mother was born, Roma Nova.

I really enjoyed this novel with its great characters and fast-moving, action filled plot. I was especially intrigued by its alternate world where the European country Roma Nova exists, a neutral but powerful nation founded sixteen centuries ago by Roman exiles. It is a nation run by women and it is here that the few remaining members of Karen’s family reside. Alison Morton has given a real ancient Roman feel to this novel, portraying a world where Latin is still spoken and the land is ruled by the twelve families descended from Roman times. The setting is fully developed and totally believable. Roma Nova seems a wonderful, if very different, place to live and Karen does have to adjust to a totally new way of life. But her grandmother is a very sympathetic person, as well as one of the leading figures of this small nation.

Karen is threatened again by Renschman and she then develops her own inner strengths, taking on a new career, and finding some unique friends along the way. These supporting characters are both interesting and complex, adding another layer of richness to the story. The pacing is excellent with never a dull moment as Karen moves from one adventure to another, learning and growing as she encounters past secrets and present day realities.

Lovers of mystery and suspense as well as lovers of books about alternate realities are sure to enjoy Inceptio. It is a complex and exciting novel with an incredibly rich setting.

Lucy thinks together they can find what they need, which is healing. Although they all want it, sometimes it’s easier said then done.

This is the 15th book in the Divine Creek Series. Heather Rainier continues to surprise and delight me with her skilled story weaving. Patrick was someone who was introduced towards the very beginning of the series as a secondary character with a minor part. But readers have been able to see him all throughout the series the same as Beck. We’ve met Beck before were able to learn a little bit about him before he became center stage in this book. Lucy is the spunky sister to the resident tattoo artist we met several books ago.

Ms. Rainier was able to keep all of these characters fresh enough for the reader that when it was time for sexy Patrick and mouthy Beck to man up and accept their changing relationship with Lucy we were cheering and waiting anxiously for these characters happily ever after, which is one of Ms. Rainier’s specialties.

The Divine Creek Ranch series and it’s characters are so entwined and close knit that we still see our favorite characters from practically every book all the while any reader would be able to pick up any book in the series and not feel totally lost. Not many authors can not only juggle the amount of characters after 15 books but also include a cross over with another series/author and still pull it off as beautifully as she has done.

I can’t wait to read more from this author and if you are like feeling as if you’re meeting old friends every time you open a book, then I suggest you pick this up. You’ll feel right at home.

She’d like to see Deidre married (for stability, of course) while Deidre sees that only as a loss of freedom.

Still, she’s there and goes along, very respectably to the very predictable ball (Emma has invited single gents of course). Predictably, a nobleman arrives: and from there, things are not predictable at all!

It starts with impish young Matilda’s efforts to liven things up. She hits on an unsuspecting guest first and things liven up from there.

Fans of the stories set in early nineteenth century England will find this a comfortably familiar world. The setting is completely perfect, from the wonderful home and dedication to needlework, to the holiday plans, and even the focus on marriage. You will enjoy Knight’s clever twist with descriptions – her snow-capped fir trees “huddle” from the cold, and main character Deidre expresses frustration by ‘savagely’ embroidering. Throughout, the phrasing is subtle but delightful. Its hard to say more without spoiling this one.

Full of Christmas charm, Susanne Marie Knight’s A Very Special Christmas Present, would make a very nice present for some lucky romance fan on your shopping list. I must admit my one wish is that it were longer! I will certainly re-read.

Have you ever wondered what secrets antiques would tell if they could speak?

I liked Katy the instant I met her. It isn’t easy to include a great deal of character development in short stories, but I was impressed by how much I learned about her as a result of her impulsive decision to buy the strange, little statue. Her curiosity and perseverance show up almost immediately, and it was really interesting to see how these traits carried her through to the final scene.

The twist at the end solidified my decision to give this piece a 5 star rating. As pleased as I was with the steamy, playful sex scenes, it is Katy’s decision to attempt to lift the curse that makes Sex After Death such a great read. Figuring out what she needs to try next propels the plot forward and gives Katy good reasons to continue working with the statue. While I have no idea what her plans may be, this would make a great series if Ms. Gaines ever decides to revisit this world. If nothing else, I’d love to see the sizzling chemistry between the main characters once again.

What surprised me the most about this tale was how often it made me laugh. The author introduces Katy to such unexpected situations that her reactions to them are as humorous as they are well-suited for the tone of this piece. Sometimes arousal and laughter go well together. This is one of them.

Sex After Death is one of the best short stories I’ve read in 2013. I can’t recommend it highly enough to anyone who loves quirky, funny erotica.

Dougald MacNeill is the next to youngest MacNeill brother and he’s not about to settle down, until Lady Alana Cameron is placed squarely in his lap…and then, the trouble begins.

When Dougald finds Alana roaming the heather on the MacNeill lands, he takes her in hand to see his laird brother James at Craigly Castle to determine her fate. But who has sent her there and why? Her uncle, laird of the Cameron clan, that has warred with the MacNeills for years, has made a marriage arrangement with another clan and now that is even at stake.

Having witnessed her father’s death, and even believing he had returned her home when all along he had been dead, Alana discovers she has the gift, or curse, of seeing the newly departed and sometimes those who should have long ago passed over. Her own deceased brother continues to plague her, the rake, and now another, who is very much of the flesh, Dougald MacNeill, has her thinking marrying a rake might just have its benefits. But who sent Alana on a fool’s errand in the first place to remove her from the Cameron’s lands and set her squarely in Dougald’s care, and who really killed her father and her brother, and what has it all to do with Alana? Will she and Dougald learn the truth before it is too late?

I found an impish sort of delight in reading about a secondary romance in this story between two ghosts. They appeared to tease and guide and, when possible, assist the heroine on her own rocky road to romance with a most dashing and tempting rogue in a kilt. This story has enough twists and turns to keep a reader captivated. There are two mysteries to solve, killers to catch and enough witty dialogue to keep the pages turning.

This is a standalone read and follows another MacNeill brother as he finds his own one true love. If anyone has been following this series, this is the brother who always seems to find himself in a dungeon and has to be rescued by a winsome lass. The tradition continues, much to my delight. I also gave this book a high rating because I’d read it once and didn’t write a review right away. Too much time had passed so I figured that I would just skim it to refresh my mind of certain facts. Instead I found myself drawn back into the story and I re-read it again from cover to cover. I still found myself enjoying the plot, the characters, the camaraderie and the dialogue. I’d forgotten some key parts and was amazed all over again. I laughed, smiled, giggled and snickered because there were so many clever quips and digs between brothers and friends, jesting and general fun sprinkled throughout the book, it was a joy to read. Even when there were sad moments or times of reflection or distressing realizations, Ms. Spear never let the somber facts drag the story’s optimism down. This novel is a celebration of life and love.

Alana is the heroine and she is cursed. Of course she’s not really cursed but that’s what everyone whispers behind her back. Only a few know the truth. The actuality is fascinating and provided a lot of entertainment. I also commend the author for her writing skills. Alana sees what others cannot. The hero accepts this unusual behavior which allowed for a challenging writing dilemma. How does a person write about a character who sees other characters from the point of view of a different character who can’t see anyone else at all? How does an author convince a reader that the hero truly does accept the impossible all the while listening to only one side of a conversation? Ms. Spear pays attention to details, that’s how. It’s the words the author chose as she described Dougald’s reactions and his feelings that appealed to me and convinced me.

Dougald is a wonderful hero. He has quite the reputation to overcome and once he admits to how he truly feels about Alana, he knows he has his work cut out for him to prove he has found ‘his one’. The hero is a romantic at heart and I enjoyed discovering that about him. He’s a strong, fair, upright man, with a wicked wit. I loved how protective he was of Alana – he didn’t talk down to her. How he talked to her, dealt with her and handled her showed respect, reverence and a healthy dose of lust. That last part caused him no end of trouble and a lot of fun for me.

There were wonderful cameos from Dougald’s brothers, like James, Angus, his cousin Niall and even his sister, Seana. I liked Alana’s brother a lot and I also liked the Cameron, although I wasn’t too sure about him in the beginning. I actually felt bad for Hoel, but not too bad because he did act like a spoiled brat. I even felt bad for Landon and was totally sad about Alana’s dad. Love is a very strong theme throughout this book and it takes many forms. A reader can only understand the scope of it after reading the book. The flip side of love is hate and there are shades of that too which causes some unique double mysteries that plague Alana, her clan and Dougald. It’s another aspect that kept my eyes glued to the pages.

One of the most fun elements is when Dougald introduces Alana to the joys of being a woman. It wasn’t the hero’s prowess that impressed me. It was Alana’s reaction, quick learning style and her blossoming cheeky wit when it comes to wrapping her man around her pinky. Just thinking of the two of them together makes me smile.

Highland Rake is a sure pleaser of an adventure. Yes, it has sexy Highlanders, some terrific Scottish brogue, some sword fights, quite a few surprises and a satisfying happy ever after, but it’s the romance that is the star of the novel. It’s wonderfully scripted and its delivery has exactly what I look for to push my happy buttons. The editing was clean, the characters were engaging and the story has a strong re-readability factor. I should know, I read it twice and loved it each time.

rishman Brogan Byrne is at the pinnacle of 1974 rock-music success. Handsome, charismatic, with a three-octave voice, you’d think he had it all. But Byrne sinks to new depths of depravity with women, liquor, and drugs.

Carly Montgomery is an ambitious record executive offered an opportunity to be manager for the last leg of Byrne’s tour. Though she’s detached and tough as nails, Carly’s cool facade comes under attack. Somehow Byrne manages to slip by her frosty defenses.

Brogan, for his part, is broken inside. A past memory weighs on his soul, affecting his actions. Is Carly the one woman to help him forget his guilt and heal his heart of rock?

Heart of Rock is a short novella, yet is very intense, so didn’t feel too short at all. It sucked me in from the beginning and didn’t let me go until I cried a tear at the very end.

Brogan Byrne can be rude, obnoxious, and in general a major prick but he can’t be hated. I tried. The very beginning of the book depicts him as a drug addict sex fiend who can’t appreciate what’s been given to him, but as the story progress, his layers are pulled back and a broken man is exposed. His issues all stem from a horrible path that left me shocked and heartbroken and gave me the ability to understand his pain much better.

But Brogan is not only pain and suffering, he has personality. He has a physique to die for and a voice that could melt anyone’s heart. Mrs. Gerrard does a splendid job at describing this charisma and I felt as if it literary jumped off the pages.

It is, I believe, almost impossible not to fall for Brogan Bryne. Carly, the heroine, did a great job at trying. She had reasons that also hinted at a dark past filled pain, for not getting involved. However, her tough, work-centered attitude was no match against the desire and emotion surging between her and Brogan. Still, watching her fight, attempt to stay afloat, fall a little and then get up and fight some more, was wonderful.

Though he’s only a secondary character, I have to mention Glo. I enjoyed reading about him and the help he always was for both Brogan and Carly.

Mrs. Gerrard not only depicts vivid sexual scenes between the characters, but also romantic, heartfelt scenes. At times the sexual tension between Brogan and Carly was palpable but so was the need, that something special that made their relationship a lot more important than just a simple conquest.

Heart of Rock is a very enjoyable novella, with characters that feel real, sizzling passion, tender emotions and the best kind of music. A definite must read!

I loved the interaction between these two characters, the chemistry and attraction between the two of them almost leapt off the page. It was funny when Jocelyn would say things just to see what Ian’s reaction would be, and how quickly he would respond which sometimes threw her off balance.

There weren’t many other characters in this story, it was centered mainly on Ian and Jocelyn but the author created such a good story that other characters weren’t needed. The sex between Ian and Jocelyn was hot and the author’s description of everything Ian did to her and her to him made you as the reader sigh.

As I said, this was such an enjoyable story that I had to reread it, and every reader should have at least one or two books in their library that they would read again and again. Under His Kilt is one of those books, so if you want to laugh, sigh and be completely entertained pick up a copy of Under His Kilt by Melissa Blue.
