On Writing

“Writing is agony. I hate it. ….When I’m writing, I spend a lot of time thinking, ‘My, doesn’t the top of the fridge look dirty’. It takes for ever. I like thinking about writing. I like having written. But actually sitting down and doing it …” — P.J. O’Rourke, journalist, writer and political satirist, to Christopher Bray of the U.K.’s Telegraph, 2005

P.J., I know what you mean. I don’t have your credentials — fame, education, publication history, ideological about-face — but, boy, can I relate.

I’m a made writer, not a born one. My writing is not a talent I’m nourishing; it’s a craft I’m trying to hone. Is it easier for a born writer? I have no idea. But, in O’Rourke fashion, while I dread the process, I do like thinking about writing and I like having written. I’d even go so far as to say I like reading what I’ve written.

Of course, I run across something now and then and think, “I could’ve said that better.” Probably true of most authors. But all in all, I usually like what shows up in the final draft or the published page. I think that’s also true of most authors. Thank goodness, huh? For all of us from the O’Rourke school of I-hate-writing, it would be appalling to go through that whole grueling process only to hate what we’ve ended up with.

That’s surely not the case of my debut novel, Southern Man. I love the story, I’m reasonably proud of my telling of it, and I’ve been pleased by the reception it’s getting from readers and reviewers. In fact, one of the most gratifying items was a comment from LASR reviewer Edelweiss: “This is a well written story, with prose that’s concise and silky to read.”

When you’re a made writer, that’s music to your ears.

It’s been over twenty years since my first attempt to write a romance novel. Coquina was a behemoth psychological romance (approaching 200,000 words when I finally gave up on it) with a mixed up heroine who lived inside a protective shell–hence the title. Even if nerve-sparing technique is done, some amount of damage is made tadalafil online india to the penile nerves. Why is ED so rampant in males? It prescription free tadalafil is because there are several diseases that come with age are responsible for impotence. This includes known if it due to the obesity, smoking, cholesterol, cialis prescription diabetes or some mental conditions. These kind of health issues are majorly treated by good counselling, improving food habits and intakes, also very important regular exercise. http://greyandgrey.com/steven-d-rhoads/ purchase generic cialis Her shell was shattered by the breathtaking biracial hero who’s maternal g-g-grandfather was a samurai and whose paternal g-g-grandfather was a colonel in the Confederate army. Well aware that my writing was mediocre, at best, I borrowed books on writing from the library, searching for the how-to’s of concocting impressive sentences– those that are long and complex but, paradoxically, easy to follow.

Fortunately, I didn’t find such a book. What I found was How to Write, Speak and Think More Effectively by Rudolph Flesch, an instruction book on simplified writing, the polar opposite of what I thought I wanted to learn. But the scales started falling from my eyes before I finished the first chapter. I devoured the rest of the book, returned it to the library, and bought a copy. I still have it–yellow-paged and worn around the edges–and I still refer to it because I’m a made writer and need to be regularly reminded how to increase the readability of my prose.

Flesch’s book is not about story-telling, plot development, characterization, or theme. It’s about putting words together in sentences and putting sentences together in paragraphs in such a manner that the reader is pulled along effortlessly, line by line. In Chapter Four, Gadgets of Language, Flesch quotes Fowler’s The Kings English, a passage underlined in red in my copy:

“Anyone who wishes to become a good writer should endeavour, before he allows himself to be tempted by the more showy qualities, to be direct, simple, brief, vigorous, and lucid. This general principle may be translated into practical rules in the domain of vocabulary as follows:

Prefer the familiar word to the far-fetched.

Prefer the concrete word to the abstract.

Prefer the single word to the circumlocution.

Prefer the short word to the long.

Prefer the Saxon word to the Romance.

These rules are given roughly in order of merit; the last is also the least.”

In other words, don’t try to concoct long, complex, “impressive” sentences.

To the extent I’m able to follow the rules for simplifying my writing, it occurs when I edit, not when I write. I still dread writing, still hate calling up a blank screen in the word processor, and my early drafts are always awful. But if I can force myself to get something–anything–in draft form, then I can edit, and that’s where the process becomes enjoyable.

Before closing my first essay, I want to thank Judy and Marianne for the opportunity to step into the Author Spotlight at LASR Reviews. I plan to use these essays to pass along tidbits I have learned from writing and publishing my first novel. I hope you find them enjoyable, at least, and thought provoking.

Question: Any other writers out there from the O’Rourke school? How do you deal with it, and get your story told?

The ultimate battle is waged with one’s heart.

Paranormal Deathmatch, Book 1

Extreme fighting champion Quinn Padgett once had it all. Fame, fortune, freedom. One fateful night it was all stripped away, and for two years the alpha male has endured a torturous life, doing the bidding of a madman in a different kind of ring. The Deathmatch, where the only rule is kill or be killed.

It’s as primal as it gets, and Quinn must draw on all his werewolf instincts to survive. Especially with Carri. Her very presence brings him to his knees, demanding he do all to protect her.

Carri had no idea how close danger lurked until she witnessed her boyfriend’s sick idea of “entertainment”. Now all she wants is to get away from the bastards who are hell-bent on ridding the world of that which they do not understand. But her boyfriend’s reach is long—and brutal. Quinn is her only hope. And the only man who awakens a fire within her, body and soul.

As Quinn and Carri go on the run in a fight for their lives, they find themselves engaged in an even deeper and more dangerous battle—a battle of the heart.

Warning: This book contains a kick-ass alpha male, a crazed madman, towel-dropping sexual tension, smokin’ hot sex, a woman who is more than capable of taming the beast, and the normal “Mandy” death, destruction and mayhem.

Who doesn’t like to watch men fight? Have you ever thought about watching a paranormal death-match? Quinn is a strong alpha-hero. Ms. Roth knows how to heat up the pages. Her sex scenes are out of this world and unlike most others. She explores boundaries most are afraid of thinking about.

Going the Distance grabs you and drags you through a crazy, emotional ride. Mandy M. Roth has created a world unlike any other with this series, it’s dark, compelling and the characters are to die for! The author has penned a striking mix of emotions that are hard to combine together, yet she comes out with a compelling end result.

The plot is solid and moves quickly throughout the story, there isn’t ever a time it’s lacking in emotion or conflict. I couldn’t think of one time I wanted this story to end. You become caught up in this fascinating world and with the characters, it’s a book you just can’t put down…it’s a book you don’t want to put down. The sex scenes are smoldering hot, to the point it’s hard for you to catch your breath. Yes, Ms. Roth is that good, so good in fact you want to be the lead character in this story and live through her eyes and feel what she feels.

This author is imaginative and brilliant and so much fun. I can’t believe I’ve never read any of her books before! She’s going at the top of my list. And you should definitely add her to your list–because trust me, this story will knock you off your feet with its action!

Pompeii lies complacent and decadent in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, the populace thriving on their depravity and their hunger for blood and Games. Within the elite aristocracy, games of another type are being played, deadly secrets are a threat to more than status, and conspiracy is a way of life for those who are unhappy.

Lucius has long been exalted as a warrior without peer. Adored and covetted by men and women alike, he is blind to the plots that are thickening around him. While total control is his on the bloody fields of war, on the battlefield of the heart, as he is about to discover, even the strongest man can be deceived by his ignorance.

Watching over it all is the majesty of Vesuvius, sputtering smoke, promising retribution. In the midst of the looming destruction, an ancient evil emerges, and will claim not only a celebrated general of Rome, but the slave girl he has slowly grown to love and cherish. A girl who will follow him into hell itself?

I love Denyse Bridger’s style of writing: she has a unique voice. I have to say that this book is a different read for me to begin with, so I wasn’t sure how well I would like it. But I quickly lost myself in the pages of her story.

My fondest wish for this story was that it had been somewhat longer and had had more to do about vampires. I didn’t really realize it was even about vampires until halfway through the book. I’m not sure if Lucius is a vampire or not, since there is no scene of him biting Xina, or anyone for that matter. There is no room for any frauds https://unica-web.com/archive/1999/1999-palmares.html cheap cialis in our online pharmacy. This drug starts cipla levitra the concerned activity in order to function properly. But Lucius’s son is a vampire, but this really wasn’t thoroughly addressed, and there is very little going on with that aspect of the story.

If you’re looking for heat, however, you’ll find it in this story. The love scenes between Lucius and Xina are explicit. There were a few scenes that made me a bit uncomfortable, such as one of the first scenes between Lucius and Xina: they are engaging in something rather intimate, but Lucius’ son walks in and they have a casual conversation as if nothing is going on. Another disturbing scene for me was when, again, Lucius and Xina are engaged in sex, and Lucius’ son walks in with his current fling and they all four have sex in front of one another. These two scenes just didn’t seem normal to me, not with it involving a father and son. I think, for me, if it had been two men who weren’t so closely related, it wouldn’t have been as uncomfortable.

I have to point out the amazing cover of this book. I really loved it — so stunning. Despite my discomfort with some aspects of this story, I must say that Denyse Bridger is one of the authors I have on my must-buy list, because of her style and the strength she gives her characters.

On a deserted island in the Pacific, surrounded by the enemy, two very different men learn to rely on each other for survival. Mike is an uneducated rascal, one step ahead of prison and a court-martial. He’s given one chance to redeem himself: if he wants to stay out of jail, he has to keep Professor James Hamilton alive. No matter what.

James is everything Mike isn’t–suave, educated, intellectual, and rich. He’s also a conscientious objector and he’s made a deal with the army–three months on the island breaking codes as long as he doesn’t have to kill anyone.

Mike is Catholic, the son of immigrants, and has never acted on his desires. James is Jewish, the son of Boston society, and experienced in love between men. During their hazardous stay on the island, they teach each other about life, friendship, and survival. With only them to say what’s right and wrong, the men make a deal: Mike must give himself to James for one day, submit to him completely, and James will allow Mike to take him whenever Mike wants to slake his sexual needs.

But once the war is over, can they keep the promises made on those hot Pacific nights and find one place both of them can call home?

Publisher’s note: This book contains explicit sexual content, graphic language, and situations some readers may find objectionable: Anal play/intercourse, male/male sexual practices.

Two men trapped on a deserted island for 3 months with only each other for company leads to a potentially dangerous situation when the men are forced to return to the real world. Mike and James are expected to fulfill their military mission decoding messages from the Japanese but on a deserted island, their needs overcome common sense. Mike and James find themselves dealing with a passion they didn’t expect amidst a potentially dangerous situation. Not to mention their newfound relationship is not one allowed in society nor the military.

While this particular storyline may not be terribly inventive, it is rather interesting if you’re looking for a fantasy like romance story about two strong willed characters. bulk generic viagra This action helps to measure their speed and other aspects of your life. Even though they are on an island, it’s easy to forget the danger of the war as well as the hidden nature of homosexual relationships during that time period. This story almost reads as if it could be any time period as isolated as the men are. This does allow you to immerse yourself into the story and the fantasy of two men falling in love on an island (even among danger and war).

Both men are interesting characters as Mike is very aggressive and old-fashioned Catholic, complete with religious guilt. James is openly gay, an intellectual that opposes the war. While the men are complete opposites, they manage to compliment each other in ways that enhance each man instead of highlighting their differences. Ultimately those differences threaten to drive a wedge between the men, but as this is a romance, I don’t think it’s giving anything away to say they work things out in a very romantic ending. While this ending was slightly odd, considering the lack of real world context and slight unbelievable resolution, it is fitting with the story.

If you’re looking for a fantasy like story that is heavy on the romance of the characters and less on the actual time period, you may enjoy this offering.

An attack from a werewolf leads to a passionate encounter before Lexi rushes off without a goodbye. Five years later they meet again at Conall’s wedding and have another steamy hook-up.

Lexi was running away from her family when she met Kameron. Now she’s back in Scotland and has taken the position of town librarian. When her ex breaks into her home, Kameron is there to save her but at a great cost to him.

Kameron has lost control of his mental abilities. Saving Lexi caused him to become trapped in his own mind. Can Lexi find help for him? Will they overcome his past wounds to be together?

For those of you who have been wanting more of the compelling Tartan Series, Tartan Mind really delivers. This is an in depth story of Kameron Conroy, his mate Lexi James and the O’Keefe pack.

I’ve been fascinated by Kameron Conroy since I’ve first read about him. Kameron is minding his own business in Brody’s pub when he is struck by the sight of Lexi James. This chance meeting allows him to become her knight in shining fur when he rescues her from the O’Connell pack. Even though he is hurt in the encounter, his only thoughts are of Lexi.

Lexi James is running away from her father and the man he wants her to marry. pill sildenafil Always remember that this condition is unavoidable and it is relatively the same as menopause. Then after meeting him again, she stays away for another six months. Except for the fact that I knew why Lexi was doing what she was, I would have thought she was not worthy of Kameron’s love.

I loved how Kameron was always the alpha with Lexi. From the fight with the O’Connells to the time he sees her at the wedding and drags her off to the gazebo and even to protecting her from Michael, Kameron is strong, sexy and in-charge of the situation. My heart bled for Kameron every time he was hurt. The headaches especially had me wishing I could comfort him.

This book gives me more information on the O’Keefe pack, its members and their special circumstances. I loved hearing about Ian and Elizabeth, Robin and the Twins and the others from previous stories.

Tartan Mind is a spellbinding tale that I could not put down until I was finished. I highly recommend it and all the previous books in this entertaining series of misfits and outcasts and the family they create.

After months of blindfolds and secrets, after countless encounters without a single word spoken, Dean Lucas knows what his mysterious partner at the adult-only club Entice wants and gives her everything she physically desires. But now, he hungers for more than just her body—he craves her heart, too.

Betrayed by her ex-husband, Zoe Grant has finally found a way to be herself, a way to sate her long-hidden desires—without the risk of another broken heart—and the fact that she doesn’t know the man’s name, has never seen his face, suits her just fine.

But, when the two are unknowingly brought together outside their mutual comfort zone, will Zoe be able to set aside her past and surrender her trust once again—and can Dean convince Zoe, nameless or not, that love knows no bounds?

She wants nameless, voiceless sex. Get off and get out. He’s pleased to give her all her heart desires, until his own heart gets in the way. Now he’s finished with the Nameless Surrender and ready to find out who belongs to the body that’s haunting his dreams.

Ms. Daniels writes a compelling novella. Her characters are realistic and their actions completely believable. Even the rationales are interesting. You want the story to work out with a happy ending and are riveted until the very end.

The reader can identify with Dr. Zoe Grant’s struggle. Burned by her first husband, she’s afraid to give her heart again. Dean makes a great hero. For all his good intentions, he still proves he’s human. That draws the reader to him. You want to help him succeed. Then again, the tall, dominant feature is pretty sexy too. The reader can almost feel his wicked hands in each love scene. I rooted for him to gain his heart’s desires.

If you want a sexy short story guaranteed to warm any cool night, then this is the novella for you. I give Nameless Surrender 5 cherries.

It’s been a year since Lachlan first set foot in the Chlodwig — and set his eyes on Adair. What started as a down and dirty one-night stand has grown into something more, but what they have can’t last forever — not when their lives are so diametrically opposed. Knowing Adair won’t listen to any reasoning of his, and he’s not ready to take that step that will take him away from his life as scavenger and dance warrior, Lachlan decides it’s time to take action.

It’s a win all, lose all bet when Lachlan walks in the Chlodwig with a crew of his own, challenging Adair in a dance fight that will either cost him his lover, or win him forever…

Returning to the uncertain urban fantasy setting, Adair and Lachlan can’t keep their hands off each other as their two worlds collide. In the fourth and last installment of the Dance Wars Series, Lachlan and Adair are struggling with the necessary absences between their meetings and increasing pressure from Adair’s scavengers. As the fourth in the series, be sure to read the other books in order so as to follow along with the progression of their relationship. If you’ve enjoyed the previous books then likely you’ll want to finish with Last Night Stand.

This is total fantasy and very aptly named as guilty pleasure reading. The writing is more basic than some of the previous books with a lot of problems from editing to overuse of commas and horrible pronoun confusion as well as convoluted scenes where men seem to have three or four hands and move like pretzels. The prose is simplistic without any eloquence to the grammar, reading like a disjointed conversation rather than a well-written story. While this trend is in all the books, it’s most obvious in this latest one. The actual plot is cheesy and silly with the dance sequences poorly explained and ill conceived, focusing more on tricks the author can convey than actual dance style. So, this is not a prize-winning piece of fabulous fiction. Having said that, I loved this series. I don’t read it for the poor writing or spelling mistakes (prostate not prostrate please), but for the erotic fantasy the author provides. Whatever may be the reason for the sphincter of Oddi dysfunction is acidity, alternative medicine treatments may also help with the cessation of alcohol and narcotic drugs, huge masturbation in boyhood, the side effect of other medication: You have to check with the doctors if you actually need generic viagra without visa or some other medication is prescribed by doctors. Do you have a dysfunctional family? To those who have a buy viagra red right hand when it comes to things in the bedroom. The heat of the sex scenes, which are many and varied, fill the story with a gritty erotica that will definitely get your blood flowing.

This series is mostly about the sex between Adair and Lachlan and this edition is no different. Yet the author uses the basic formula that has worked for her (and well) in including hot, gritty, dirty, and scorching sex scenes between two vivacious personalities to titillate and entice without worrying about creating an intricate and well thought out plot. The characters of Adair and Lachlan are slowly progressing as they fight to be together but their relationship is entirely based on sex and while they love each other, it’s a very masculine love where aggression and sex go hand in hand. The testosterone flows freely in these books and you’ll love it.

Another aspect that works is the setting, which is post-apocalyptic urban fantasy with just enough detail to give it life without getting too far into the world building. I sometimes wish the author would deliver a series more about the world itself and less about the corny Dance Wars as the former is a strength and the later, while attempting to be unique, often falls flat and empty. But as this is the final installment of the series the entire story arc over the four books is interesting and the erotica is clearly the focus and less so on the Dance Wars.

Bottom line is that this may not be the best book you’ll ever read, partly because it’s littered with so many editing and writing mistakes that even a reader who ignore such problems will be able to see the mistakes. However, if you enjoy erotic urban fantasy with emphasis on erotic fantasy, you’ll love this series. The mistakes will run old and the author will eventually fatigue readers but in the meantime, enjoy the ride with some of the hottest characters I’ve read and some of the most titillating erotica scenes. You won’t be disappointed in this guilty pleasure read, just know what you’re getting into and save this for some late night fantasy.
