Texas Montgomery Mavericks, Book 3

KC Montgomery was eleven when she met the love of her life. Of course, seventeen-year-old Drake Gentry didn’t know she existed, but that didn’t stop her girlish fantasies from growing and changing over the years.

Now, after enjoying a front-row seat to his breakup with his latest girlfriend, she’s been handed an all-grown-up fantasy come true—two weeks at the Sand Castle Resort. With him.

Drake most definitely noticed KC a long time ago, but the timing’s never been right. Now that he’s facing a lonely vacation that was supposed to be for two, it seems only natural to accept KC’s offer to fill in. And as far as her terms go… No strings. No expectations. No holds barred. Drake is no fool—he’s all over it.

But once they’re back in Texas there are invisible strings still hanging between them. Strings labeled attraction, affection…even love. And the more they try to untangle the knots, the tighter they’re bound together.

An exotic location, a young girl’s crush all grown up and two consenting adults make this short love story. It is a story which grew on me after the first, more wobbly, third of the book and took me to a hot, pool filled land, despite the lashing rain outside. It is also, although part of the Texas Montgomery Mavericks series, readable as a standalone.

The wobbly start has no major stumbles, only odd phrases which jerk the reader from the tale a fraction. There are a few clichés such as ‘[He] didn’t know she existed’ but usually the issue is in the turn of phrase. For example. ‘Her mind- followed by her gaze – rolled to the late afternoon sun outside’. There is nothing obviously wrong here but the phrases are awkward.  Finally, I stumbled at the phrase ‘an older man of seventeen’ as an older man is usually someone creepy hanging around the younger crowd and seventeen is hardly a man, still a boy really. As D’Alba was using this phrase to show the passing of time from when KC Montgomery was eleven and her love interest was seventeen, a boy of seventeen would have worked better for me.

However, the main female protagonist – KC, or Kathryn Colleen Montgomery, is fully realised and in good style. She has a carefree, pioneering and sometimes philosophical spirit which is made clear in the narrative. She ‘point[s] the hood’ of the car towards her ‘Thank-God-It’s-Friday beer’ and she is sure ‘if this car could talk’ she would ‘collect valuable blackmail stories from her parents’ dating days when her dad was the coolest guy in town and this was his chick-magnet car’. This not only sets the scene and shows more of her personality but fills in some back-story seamlessly and with brilliant efficiency.

KC is a woman I understood, even if she lives more dangerously and confidently than I. She craves girl time to sort out what to do about boys – ‘she needed a trusted woman to call’ – but her confidence is clear, despite her nerves, so when she later throws down the gauntlet for her love interest, Drake, it made sense.

However, Drake is not as fully realised and full a character. He is good in bed and has a few witty comments to his name but I did not feel like I understood all of where he came from and where he was going. He just happened to be in town at the right time, got dumped (again) at the right time and had a holiday ready for KC to jump into. He is ‘sweet and loving to everybody’, as a lot of romance leads are but I needed more uniqueness to truly enjoy their union on holiday; he was too bland.

Having said that, the siren bikini and pools of warm water, jets of hot tub bubbles and scenic, half nude beaches were a brilliant setting for some heated love making which was breathy to read and hard to put down, hitting the key highs of any romance tale.

The military is his life, and that’s all he needs—until he travels to Pigeon Hollow for a wedding and meets the woman his men reverently call “Mama”.

Lois Gordon is nothing like Hank envisioned. Instead of the plump, older woman happily baking pies in her farmhouse kitchen, Lois is a smart, sexy powerhouse who runs Gordon Equine…and tempts him to break all his own rules.

The heat between them quickly flares into a weekend fling hotter than Lois’s oven. But with Hank’s dangerous career and two failed marriages between them, forever could be too much to ask for.

Commander Hank Miller is past forty, long divorced and wants nothing more after a hard day in Special Ops than to go home and relax. When asked to join the team for a beer after work, Hank’s initial impulse is to say no. But with mounds of boring paperwork, no one waiting for him at home and his friend’s request to talk to the team on a personal matter, Hank gracefully gives in and goes for the drink. When Jimmy Gordan announced his imminent wedding and his desire for their team to stand up with him, every man is on board. With the nuptials to occur in a scant two weeks, they all arrange to take some leave and descend upon Jimmy’s small home town. Pigeon Hollow – and Lois Gordan, Jimmy’s mother – won’t know what’s hit them.

This is a wonderful story, brilliantly paced and bursting with vibrant characters, laughter and a hint of spicy love. With a huge cast of characters, the author has done an amazing job keeping the balance. The Commander and Lois are certainly front and center, clearly the hero and heroine of the story, yet it’s equally clear the whole Special Ops team is important and no one has been overlooked. We get to catch up with everyone and still – for those of us who have just started this series – get a good sense of all the men’s personalities. I loved seeing how they all interacted, I thought it flowed really well and seemed so natural I didn’t realize how quickly I was turning the pages, lost in the story and characters. The only downside I found was with so many characters it was difficult to have a convoluted plot. While the wedding (and all the bachelor shenanigans) was an awesome read, it felt more like a catch-up of the team and characters, than a plot driven story. This in no way lessened my enjoyment, however, and there were many laughs and sighs over all the antics the men got into.

For readers who want a character driven, fast paced read, this is a great book. Filled with diverse and unique men, I found the team worked well together and this was an interesting, good read. While certainly not a graphic, erotic novel, there are descriptive love scenes and the bedroom door is left wide open. I found this added more spice between Lois and Hank, and helped me see the relationship blossoming between them better – especially when there were so many other characters in the main story to contend with. A fun, fast paced read with a delicate hint of spice to it, I really enjoyed this story and can heartily recommend it.

Dr. Dora Adler’s life has been in disarray since the beginning of the zombie apocalypse, but when she gets bitten by one of the undead, her whole world is turned upside down. Held captive in a secret underground lab, the tall, muscular hunk in the next cell is her only hope for salvation. Unfortunately, he claims to be a werewolf. Yeah, and she’s supposedly a witch.

Dirk Gunderson is an alpha Arbor pack werewolf. Captured and collared, he’s sold to the zombie lab in hopes his blood serum can create a vaccine. He needs to escape, but not without the hot little brunette witch.

In the midst of enemy werewolves and the hordes of undead, Dirk and Dora’s sexual tension ignites a blaze hotter than the desert highway. Along their journey, they battle the inevitable: a werewolf must never take a witch as a mate.

A blow to the head is what it takes…

That could be the beginning of many scenarios. Unfortunately, for Dr. Dora Adler, it pertains to zombies. Human wars of the past paled in comparison to the devastation caused by the Z-phage infection as it swept across the globe. When combined with natural disasters, crashing stock markets, and numerous other catastrophes, it promotes the perfect scenario for total annihilation of the human race. Being a medical provider, Dora is stuck right in the middle of things. Every patient that comes through the door is potentially infected and poses a risk to the few humans left. Not only does she have to treat these patients, but she also has to single out the ones already compromised and then watch as they are carted off to quarantine. Thankfully, those she holds dearest remain safe, but for how long?

It is not uncommon for people no prescription viagra to experience erectile dysfunction occasionally. Projection is only possible, however, viagra for sale cheap if you are using your chest to power and amplify your voice. When couples undergo male infertility treatment in Kolkata is dealt purchase cialis http://appalachianmagazine.com/category/nature/page/2/ with in a lot of clinics with almost 98% success rate. If the possibility of becoming a zombie weren’t bad enough, she has a family curse hanging over her head. One way or another, her number is up; number 27, that is. Every female in her family for several generations had died at the age of 27. Dora has no idea why; so it made it somewhat difficult to prepare or protect herself from her impending fate. As luck would have it, her 27th birthday comes with a new twist. Not only is she bitten and rushed off to a facility to await turning into a zombie and death by a bullet to the head, she discovers that she’s immune to Z-phage.

Now that might sound like a good thing—if one doesn’t relish the idea of becoming a cannibal and eating loved ones and close friends—just imagine becoming a science experiment in a world desperate to find a cure to a virus that depletes human numbers by staggering amounts every day. Soon, there won’t be anyone left. Just because Dora is immune to zombie bites, doesn’t mean being ripped to shreds in a feeding frenzy doesn’t pose a threat. She’s immune, not magic, right? Dora, honey, you better get ready for a little more weird in your life. Seems you’re not completely human, after all, and zombies aren’t the only monsters to go bump in the night.

Dirk is your typical badass, playboy, alpha-male werewolf. He likes fast bikes, fast women, and uncluttered relationships, except when it comes to his killer pooch, Fang, a teacup Chihuahua who’s managed to turn this big bad wolf into a dotting “mommy”. While Dirk certainly feels the responsibility of his alpha status and knows he needs to choose a mate soon, he’s got bigger and better things to attend to, like tracking down the hunter who almost took his sister’s life.

Catching Z-phage wasn’t a concern for him; he’s immune to the virus. In fact, zombies didn’t even seem to notice his presence. Apparently, werewolves and other shifters didn’t smell like food. Unfortunately, the invulnerability didn’t extend all of his wolf family. Lower wolves—betas and omegas—were unable to shift except during a full moon, leaving them susceptible to zombie attacks. The sheer number of zombies looking for human meat had already decimated many wolf packs. If something wasn’t done to stop Z-phage, there wouldn’t be a world left for any of them, human or shifter.

I’ve got to say I’m not a fan of zombies. I don’t know why, but they creep me out. I can’t even watch zombie movies without getting the heebie-jeebies. Why I grabbed this story is beyond me, but I’m glad I did. I expect my attraction to werewolves and other paranormal beasties overrode my anxiety about flesh-eating ghoulies. Ms. Gordon certainly had my unease in high gear when it came to her thorough description of a world riddled with this highly contagious virus that turns just about everyone into mindless cannibals, but her twist on things really sparked my attention and kept me turning the pages—despite being scared of the dark for a few days.

The relationship between Dirk and Dora steadily grows as they develop companionship, trust, and inevitably love with one another. Despite the chaos around them and the rules governing both their kind regarding mingling of the species, they can’t stop destiny. Fight it as they may, when they finally come together, it’s explosive and a major turning point, even if they aren’t quite ready to admit it to themselves. Some of the dialog seemed a bit cheesy at times, but I envisioned a world where anything to laugh about was likely cherished and exploited to the fullest.

This book certainly has a lot of plot twists and excitement to keep you entertained. I like how the author adds a new take on things with shifters and magic. I mean, how many ways can you write about zombies without everything sounding the same? Ms. Gordon certainly presents a stimulating change from a perspective I hadn’t considered before. There were some similarities to several different movie plots that seemed a bit “borrowed”, but the author still manages to give it her own voice, making the overall book an enjoyable—if not anxiety provoking—read. There were a few remaining loose ends so I’m hoping there will be more tales to come.

Zombies, werewolves, and witches oh my. This certainly ain’t Kansas and I think Dora’s going to need more than a pair of ruby slippers to save the day. With her alpha-mate at her side and newfound skills in “witchmacallit”, she just might be able to turn the tide and save the human race, one person at a time. If animated corpses who love to gorge on human flesh sparks your fancy, and sexy, Harley-riding wolf shifters give you thrills, then you’ll probably enjoy Ms. Eva Gordon’s Apocalyptic Moon. It’s a hair-raising, moon-howling adventure that kept me eagerly turning the pages to see what happened next—as well as checking my closet for any hidden ghoulies wishing to make a meal out of me. I’ll be sleeping with a bat next to my bed for many nights to come. Thank you, Ms. Gordon, for penning a story that will likely stay with me for a while to come.

This is definitely a book that you can not judge by its cover. Looking at the cover you may assume this is a typical romance novel, but don’t let the cover fool you. I have to admit I was quit surprised at the contents and plot. The author has created a story that has a balanced mixture of romance, suspense and paranormal. The even flow of the plot kept drawing me in to continue reading more. Medium Rare is book two in the Medium trilogy.

Rose Ramos has not only inherited a lovely Victorian home, she is also introduced to the family spirit guide, Skag and she also inherited the family talent to see and communicate with the other side. Being a medium with such a willing partner, Rose and Skag start Locators, Ltd.

As with a medium rare dish, many factors come in to play to make the meal satisfying and Meg Benjamin did just that.

Starting with a hint of romance and suspense, Rose submits her resume to Evan Delwin, who is looking for a research assistant. Evan has written books on exposing psychic fraud and his interest is peaked after he receives a call highlighting a mysterious psychic by the name of William Bradford. The medium that made the call seems to have conveniently disappeared. As Rose and Evan spend more time together interviewing and investigating William Bradford they seem to have found a fondness for each other. Rose starts to notice that Evan is hot; Evan feels the need to call Rose or stop by to discuss the case, however Rose has been hiding the fact that she is a medium. Will Rose reveal her secret before it is too late? What caused Evan to have such doubt in the powers of mediums and psychics?

Now mix in a bit of terror. The author does a fantastic job of building the scary scenes starting with Rose being chased by hellbound dogs and then shortly there after ravens attach her home, later to encounter demons lurking to collect more souls.

Meg Benjamin really shows her talent for being descriptive, with keeping the plot flowing and building a successful plot with a lot going on but still not too much where it will lose you. The novel kept its interest all the way through. When I first looked at the cover I would have never thought this novel would be packed with such a powerful punch.

I am not one to eat my meat medium rare but I have to say this was a satisfying read.

Even the unthinkable can sound reasonable when you mix alcohol, sexual frustration, and a bachelorette party—especially a bold proposition. Now in the light of day, Naomi’s hung over, horrified, and anxious about facing this complicated man again and the unexplored feelings their encounter brought with it.

She called, he came, but Ryan didn’t exactly conquer. Is it too much to hope that Naomi will give him a do-over? She can’t avoid him, not when he’s walking her down the aisle. But who ever heard of a bridesmaid getting cold feet?

Naomi has been single for over six months and has sex on the brain. Getting slightly drunk at her friend’s Bachelorette party, she boldly announces her desire to get laid, and is hurriedly carted back to her duplex by a friend. Alone again, she calls one of the groomsmen – Ryan – and gives him a sexy ultimatum, if you want me, come get me. What follows is a wonderful mixture of hilarious and sexy start of their relationship.

Naomi is a great heroine, smart and relatable, I loved her declaration in the opening pages of wanting to get laid – because really, who hasn’t said something similar when half-drunk at a girls night out? Ryan is a sweet and eager hero, someone who I’d enjoy to come running when I called late at night. I really enjoyed how neither character is perfect, they’re funny, sweet and all the more interesting for their flaws, but they also so clearly work seamlessly together. The set up of the plot isn’t anything blindingly new – a friend’s wedding, a long standing crush on one of the groomsmen and alcohol fuelled bravery – but I still felt as if anything could happen. I was a little disappointed that Naomi lost her gumption a bit the following day, but it did make Ryan work for it, which was sweet. The author still managed to make a very traditional, well-known story seem fresh and different, and that little bit of humour added in between Naomi and Ryan had me laughing in places.

This is somewhat raunchy, caught between a traditional romance and a deliciously explicit, steamy novel. All the scenes are written tastefully, with a light touch and I found them sexy without pushing the envelope. Almost from the beginning I was rooting for Naomi and Ryan to hook up and found the outcome of their spicy relationship to be very satisfying.

The secondary characters were amazing additions to this tale of love and betrayal and secrets and lies. Vivienne was a lovely change of pace from the typical women we sometimes read about because she was simply wild in her thoughts and feelings. And while Lord Dashiell was a typical rake, his character was diverse enough to keep me locked in.

I read this book in one sitting because I simply couldn’t put it down. The mystery that Ms. Ives weaves was fantastic and had me guessing until the very end. To be able to meld the vivid characters and complex scheme as this author did earned her a Best Book in my eyes. If you love historical romances, then this book is a must!

In 1888 London, an aspiring journalist will do almost anything to get a story on the front page of her father’s male dominated newspaper. Long grown tired of revamping redundant weekly missives regarding high-society fashion and gardening tips, Samantha Winston yearns for the day when she might prove it doesn’t take a pair of over-inflated bollocks to merit the coveted headline…even if it means going undercover to unearth the identity of the most sadistic killer to ever darken Whitechapel’s fog-laden alleys. Yet when Samantha intersects the path of Adam Hawkins, a meddlesome, fork-tongued, disarmingly attractive American seemingly hell-bent on ending the elusive killer’s reign of blood and terror, she finds herself no longer the huntress, but the hunted…

Samantha is extremely outspoken and brash at times, and she never misses an opportunity to voice her opinions on equal rights. Consequently, she is frequently at odds with her family. I completely understand Samantha’s outrage at the double standards of the day. However, I think that her arguments would be more effective if she varied her approach occasionally. Whenever the subject of women’s rights comes up, Samantha’s temper gets away from her and she ends in heated arguments. She does this so often that her family has taken to writing her tirades off as just another one of her fits. I must admit that her attitude even began to get on my nerves and I agreed with many of her ideas!

Even though Samantha’s attitude is somewhat abbrasive, I still think she is a likable character who is brave and dedicated to her writing. Since her father won’t give her the space in the paper that she deserves, Samantha feels she has no other choice than to go undercover and discover the identity of the killer stalking Whitechapel. Little does she know that the killer is practically right under her nose. I think Samantha’s plan to catch the murderer is a very foolish one. She has absolutely no experience with undercover work and even less experience in chasing murderers. As I read, I kept wondering what she would do if she actually did come across Jack the Ripper. However, I will admit that Samantha did the best she could with the resources she had, but it quickly becomes clear that Samantha is in way over her head.

Adam and Samantha have excellent chemistry from the moment they meet. Ms. Ashton paces their relationship perfectly. I enjoyed watching Samantha and Adam dance around their attraction for each other. It made the moment when they finally gave in to their feelings even sweeter. Samantha and Adam are both way to stubborn for their own good. However, I have a feeling that they’ll be an excellent couple.

I figured out who Jack the Ripper was fairly easily. In fact, as I read, I became increasingly frustrated when no one else seemed to be able to figure it out. Adam insisted on suspecting a certain character when there was absolutely no proof. There are plenty of hints concerning Jack the Ripper’s true identity, but Adam kept ignoring them until it was nearly too late. Adam is a smart man and really should have figured the mystery out much sooner. Despite my frustrations, I really like the way the story ended. Ms. Ashton found a clever and completely plausible way to explain the reason why Jack the Ripper’s identity remains a mystery.

Whitechapel Quill is a certainly a good read. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys dark mysteries, historical romance, and a heroine with attitude to spare.

Love is a betting game, until it isn’t.

Lady Gabrielle has been in love with her brother’s best friend since she was a child. Lord Anthony has been a fixture in her home for as long as she can remember due to his lack of family. Though they share a bond they keep secret, Gabby must stand by and watch as Anthony goes on with his life, hoping one day they will be together.

Now that Gabby is of marriageable age, Anthony realizes that Gabby is the woman he needs to complete him. He proposes to her before running off to find something that has been lost to him. When he doesn’t return on the expected date and has not sent any word, Gabby knows that she has let her heart lead her decisions long enough.

Once Anthony returns home he finds his rival is set on his woman! Bets are being made within the ton on who will throw the first punch. Lord Throne, though has a history of being a rake, is determined to win Gabby’s affections and her hand.

The rest of the book centers around the two men in a somewhat epic battle for Gabby and all the while Gabby is battling her own feelings. When desperate times call for desperate measures, Gabby must face her fears and make her choice.

I felt the internal struggles the main protagonists worked through were compelling. I was drawn in by Lord Thorne and his motives for wanting Gabby and am looking forward to reading his story. I was a tad turned off by the happenings of Anthony’s life before he understood his feelings for Gabby but I think the end result was worth that burden they couple had to bear.

Overall it was a great love story and a wonderful historical romance I believe any book lover will enjoy.

Back from his tour of duty, wealthy Nevada rancher Justin Slade gets the shock of his life. The woman who shared his bed eighteen months ago is in his hometown with a son in tow who looks just like Justin!

Katherine Grady is hiding a dark past, but when she realizes Justin seduced her under false pretenses, she’s livid;even if she still finds him as irresistible as ever. Will their secrets keep them apart, or will her hero fight for what’s his?

A bet changes both Justin Slade and Katherine Grady’s life forever. Justin is shocked to find Katherine in Silver Springs Nevada and with a child that is very obviously his, but Katherine thought Justin was someone else so they have to pretend that her son isn’t Justin’s for awhile in order to spare Justin’s friend’s family.

It was a nice twist on the secret baby story with Katherine honestly thinking Justin was a poor hog farmer who died overseas, so the shock of finding out that Justin is both alive and not the person she thought he was added a nice element of drama. Justin quickly falls in love with his son and realizes that he never fell out of love with Katherine even if he’s angry about some of the things in Katherine’s past.

Overall, it’s a sweet romance and very much a representative of the type of category romance that one expects when picking up a Harlequin Desire story. It had a decent plot, fun characters, and well described scenery, especially since I’ve been to Silver Springs Nevada a few times. The author has done her research and does a good job of writing a cowboy story with soldier elements and I enjoyed reading it.
