In a desperate attempt to flee the advances of her lecherous employer, governess Lydia Taylor steals his pistol and sets off across the Yorkshire countryside. After spending two months as a virtual prisoner at Stanbury Manor she wants nothing to do with Lord Hugh Stanbury–or any other man.

When Lord Jack Sibley glimpses a ghostly figure wandering the moors his first instinct is to ignore the auburn-haired beauty. Rumored to be the devil incarnate, he has a reputation as a heartless scoundrel who murdered his brother’s fiancée on the eve of her wedding. Does Jack set out to rescue the beautiful woman to placate the demons that haunt him–or is his mission merely a clever ruse to bed yet another woman?

Whether she is threatening him with a pistol or seducing him by firelight, the 23-year-old Lydia is as untamed as the moors she grew up on. Though he dare not admit it, Jack may have finally met the only woman whose passion can rival his own . . . but if he is certain of one thing it’s that passion can be deadly.

In Rescued by a Rake, events start dramatically as Lydia Taylor, on the run, rushes across the windswept Moorlands to a backdrop of lightning. Stanbury, the cad, is all the villain needed here…but he’s not the only one. While I had no doubts about Stanbury… Lydia’s ‘rescuer’ gave me pause as well. They all act as libido boosters and target the offending problem in specific ways. tadalafil generic viagra loved that There may be confusion in mind that Kamagra and cipla generic viagrae made with the same ingredient and so, if the power is the same, you will get the same effect. Jack Sibley, artist, gentleman, murderer? He is, to Lydia’s mind, unpredictable and exciting. His past issues and the gossip about him – the accusations – only serve to up her curiosity, and mine. She opens her eyes to an artist’s chamber and suddenly, they are just two people, alone in a room. Passion throws this all into the realm of complete, sudden unpredictability. Dramatic, indeed. And, for some reason, that image of the ‘unseeing stares of the gargoyles’ as witness to all events adds a layer of prickling creepiness to random moments. I had hope that they didn’t represent the dark side of Sibley Hall…and perhaps these are two people who can help one another.

Yet, nothing can erase the past, or the fact that Lydia is on the run. Perhaps the most wonderful thing about Rescued By A Rake is its surprises, so I will not risk giving any more away.

Minor editing issues are irritants at times (peak for peek, for example) is the only thing that prevents top marks here. This is a wonderful read and I know I’ll be looking for book two!

Must mention the dark and dreamy cover: absolutely, completely perfect.

With the death of her father, Lenna Keith is trapped between a king’s command and a land hungry guardian. Her luck improves none as she flees and winds up at the mercy of the Gunns, the very clan seeking to destroy her family, but, looking into the eyes of their Laird, her heart rebels at the thought that this man is her adversary.

Alax Gunn is intrigued by this spirited woman but mostly by the fact that she mirrors someone who has haunted him since youth. Curiosity and mistrust turn to attraction and desire, but swiftly she becomes so more to him. What all will he sacrifice to keep Lenna safe and in his arms? Will a love between two destined enemies bring an end to a feud or to two ancient clans of Scotland?

Ghosts, grudges and greed have nineteen-year-old Lenna Keith’s life in upheaval and seriously threatened. She’s the heir to Ackergill Castle that has belonged to the Keith clan for generations. She has ninety days to choose a husband from one of the feuding clans to help bring peace to the region or King James will choose one for her. In late sixteenth-century Scotland, her prospects did not bode well for a happy future.

With Ackergill taken over by Edward of the Sinclair clan, Lenna escapes after being abused. She runs to seek help only to fall into a poacher trap on land belonging to the hated Gunn clan. For over a century the Ackergill Keiths and the Halberry Gunns have been bitter enemies.

Alaxander Gunn, the new laird of Halberry, is a stranger to his own clan having been fostered at an early age and then sent on to King James’ court as a young man. When he rescues the wounded Lenna from the trap and takes her to Halberry to heal and rest, he sets of a storm of protest among his people. A hated Keith in their midst is abhorrent to them.

The old doctor Patrick stoically tends her. James, Alaxander’s cousin and second, is outright hostile and vocal. He rages until Alaxander say “No More….” Even Alax’s mother disapproves. However, viagra tablets india opacc.cv the afflicted individual can heal well with proper treatment. This drug has been discovered to be an effective viagra canada price anti-ED capsule. There are a number of reasons that compels impotent men to choose this drug instead of purchase generic cialis other pills of erectile dysfunction available in the market. generic levitra online At the same time, there could be other causes as well. Only the maid Moira seems happy to take care of the abused and wounded Lenna.

The ghost of the “Green Lady”, believed to be the spirit of the fifteenth-century Helen Gunn who died trying to escape the cruel abuse of a Keith, haunts Alax’s dreams and has for years, but now it seems more real and persistent telling him to not let tragedy take him and Lenna like it had taken her and her home. Her appearance to many influences actions that relate to Lenna and Alax’s well-being in a secretive and dangerous situation.

When Andrew of the MacKay clan abducts Lenna, the hopelessness she feels and her pain keeps the reader’s adrenaline pumping. Her courage and tenacity makes exciting reading. However, the entrance of a deranged, cruel priest puts Lenna’s life in peril and her pain is unrelenting. After all her valiant efforts, she feels death is imminent but refuses to give up.

A traitor in the Gunn clan, driven by deep-abiding hatred, has orchestrated the havoc in Lenna and Alax’s lives and deems both of them unfit to be at Halberry. I was so tempted to skip over to the back and see who it was. Even though the foreshadowing is there I missed it. As the suspense gets intense, the silent scream of, “Who is doing all these evil things?” prods one to read in a hurry.

The alliances change among the clans and the capricious ways of the king keep the reader on tenterhooks as the story builds to a climax.

Among all the misery and hate, which felt a little overdone, there are spots of humor that bring a bit of relief. One of the best is Alax and Lenna’s ride home after he rescues her and gives her whiskey to ease her pain. She becomes “pure seduction”. Even Moira giggles at her as she gets the inebriated Lenna settled in bed knowing a deluxe hangover awaits Lenna the next morning. Of course, the love scenes bring out the best of the characters and all the misery dims as Alax and Lenna, against tremendous odds, find acceptance and their happy-ever-after. I stayed up late to finish this one.

It’s bedtime—and bestselling authors Rhonda Nelson and Tawny Weber have two deliciously wicked tales to tell you… The Steadfast Hot Soldier by Rhonda Nelson

Army ranger John “Bear” Midwinter has two rules when it comes to the ladies—no tiny women, and no dancers. So why does petite ballet teacher Veda Hayes turn his blood into liquid fire? Still, the heat between them won’t be denied. Will this soldier melt…or burn up?

Wild Thing by Tawny Weber

Compared to her beautiful siblings, groomer Andrea Tanner always felt like an ugly stepsister. But when she’s left tied up and fuming, her prize pooch, Medusa, stolen, Andrea can’t help hoping her prince will come. And he does. Hunky P.I. Percy Graham arrives in time to save the day—and to remind her that he hasn’t forgotten the naughty night they once shared….

Humor, mystery, male confusion and female mayhem are only the tip of the iceberg in the two fun stories that make up this delightful and entertaining book.

The first one has a yummy title, The Steadfast Hot Soldier which is quite accurate in describing the hero, John Midwinter. He’s a solder coming home to help out his mom. Sounds so sweet, loyal and benign, doesn’t it? Not so fast. His mom is not Donna Reed or Claire Huxtable but more like a flighty Mommy Dearest. It’s amazing he’s as well adjusted as he is but no one can be emotionally unscathed growing up in that kind of household. What’s it going to take to bring a soldier some peace and happiness? Certainly not a brash and aggressive woman. Nope, he needed a tiny dancer.

Veda is a sweetheart. She has some New York experience under her belt so she’s not as countrified as John expected her to be. I enjoyed how the heroine slowly chipped away at John’s preconceptions and resistance little by little and the only tactic she used was being herself. She has her own baggage to deal with, like an interfering over-loving mother, and a bird that quips jokes and complains of bunions. She’s got a big heart, and a huge crush on John, a/k/a Bear.

I loved how John/Bear went with his instincts. It caused a whole new kind of conflict between him and Veda which ultimately leads to what a reader expects; them falling in love for real and a happily ever after. What’s awesome is the sense of humor and tongue-in-cheek encounters that lead to real …tongue in cheek, and other places, which lead to some very steamy and exciting encounters between the two. Their passionate encounters were placed well in the story and the author wrote them with vivid language that highlighted the action.

Another great aspect of this story is the townspeople. The author effectively tapped into what makes a community vibrant and interesting: gossip, well meaning manipulation, a sense of connection and a competitive baking contest. John/Bear finds something equally valuable and stunning the longer he stays in the town he never wanted to come back to. When I combined the townsfolk viewpoint of him, Veda’s tender and accepting love, and the final revelation of what the town of Hydrangea actually offered the hero, it generated a very warm and happy feeling.

The Steadfast Hot Soldier is entertaining, delightful, certainly spicy but full of charm and ends up with a wonderfully satisfying happy ever after.

The next novella, Wild Thing by Tawny Weber, is an incredibly exciting who-done it combined with a whacky and unlikely romance. There are more laughs and passionate sighs in store for readers and it’s guaranteed fun.

Percy is the put upon hero who has gone to the dogs. He’s a macho P. Erectile dysfunction can be broadly classified into three categories. a) The complete inability to achieve an erection. b) online cialis purchase Inconsistent erection. c) The ability to only sustain temporary or brief erections. I. who has better, more important things to do, like save his sanity, than search for a spoiled yappy puppy. However his ever faithful and convincing secretary bullies him to do this one last, little, easy, quick and painlessly simple innocuous case. Nothing is ever that smooth and uncomplicated and I was already grinning with anticipation. Sure enough, Percy finds trouble in spades and curves and flashing eyes as he finds the source of all his inner turmoil and personal strife gagged and tied up in a chair. Why is that sweet innocent woman the cause of his internal angst? I’m not saying. It’ll ruin the fun.

Andrea is in a bind – literally. The last person she expects to see is the one that walks through her business’s door. That whole scene is pretty darned funny and again, I’m not going to give details. Suffice to day, it set the tone for the story as well as the conflict, and it makes clear that the push-pull attraction that exists between the heroine and Percy is going to be one of the funniest highlights of the story. And the most rewarding, and hot and very romantic.

The most endearing character is Medusa. I think those dogs are weird looking and certainly Percy starts off in agreement. What’s adorable is how Percy slowly yet inexplicably finds himself changing his perceptions and opinion about the little canine. And the dog’s response to him is pure giggles and sweetness. Ultimately, he becomes a warrior on Medusa’s behalf and it gets pretty exciting.

The mystery is about trying to figure out who is really trying to kidnap the dog. There are a lot of suspects and the answer isn’t a simple one. The author wove a wonderful and interesting criminal plot throughout the story to spice up and complicate Andrea and Percy’s growing relationship.

What the hero does at the end is clever, shifty and downright genius and it turns out to be the best engagement gift a man could give to a woman like Andrea. It’s the key to making their happy ever after possible and it gave me the warm and fuzzies. There were a couple of emotional loose ends that the hero and heroine tied up at the end and the final line in the book was a hoot.

Wild Thing ended as it began, with a grin. Ms. Weber consistently shares her sense of humor with readers through the antics of her characters and she’s succeeded again. I was thoroughly entertained from beginning to end.

Blazing Bedtime Stories, Volume VII isn’t a book that will put you to sleep, instead those bedtime stories will help you dream saucy and sexy dreams with delicious heroes that know how to love their women. It’s a great read and I recommend this book for any reader who likes a variety of action, heart, mystery with grand and romantic gestures and happily ever afters that satisfy. Ms. Nelson and Ms. Weber sure know their way around romance.

Her hot-blooded claim to his home is amusing…and arousing. Which is why he isn’t leaving until he takes possession of everything—starting with the bewitching Bella…

A Sensual Surrender

Bella is furious when the Duke barges into her home, declaring it rightfully his! The willful widow is not about to give up her haven without a fight, no matter how determined the Duke is—or how sensual the battlefield. But once she’s sharing a house with the beguiling barrister, she is in danger of losing everything—one deep, slow kiss at a time…

Emotions run high when two people whose lives have experienced major upheavals end up at Wyndmoor Manor, each with a deed showing proof of ownership.

The widow Bella Sinclair fell in love with Wyndmoor Manor on sight. She feels safe there where tenant rents will make it possible for her to maintain the manor, live independently, and fulfill her long-denied desire to write social and political articles for publication. She and Harriet, her old companion, will no longer be subjected to threats and humiliations. At Wyndmoor Manor, they can live quietly and free while Bella uses her talents, makes her own decisions, and becomes her own person.

Before she even has time to unpack, along comes James Devlin, a successful barrister, who has already proven his ability to succeed by winning most of his court cases. However, he’s just had a dukedom dumped in his lap. Now he must prove himself in a totally new realm—not easy with his history. James’ law partners arrive at Wyndmoor Manor and offer their views on the ownership struggle. Brent Stone mesmerizes Bella. He is like a flesh-and-blood Michelangelo creation, while Anthony Stevens has hard, cold eyes that make Bella feel like she needs to cross herself. The married partner Jack Harding and his wife Evie show Bella a totally different kind of marriage than she had known with Roger. Moreover, she and Evie seem to be kindred spirits.

Other secondary characters that impact their lives are James’ dowager grandmother whose main focus in life is being among the elite in the Ton; his half brother Gregory, a drunken wastrel, gambler, and opium addict; Bella’s late husband’s twin, Rupert who had been Roger’s partner in illegal business that had been left unfinished due to Roger’s untimely death. With these characters, two of the deadly sins—greed and jealousy—rear their ugly heads and put the struggle for who owns Wyndmoor Manor on the back burner.

James’ motives shift as he tries to protect Bella. She is unsure what to think of this. Nobody had ever been concerned for her safety before. Bella soon becomes James’ protector when he is wounded. Life becomes more precious. Their hot, breathtaking lovemaking sends the story spiraling up to ecstasy—ah!

Tina Gabrielle’s eloquent writing style lures the reader in with well-developed characters; conflicts, some humorous and others that are spine-tingling; back stories that intrigue, and vivid descriptions of settings that give one a sense of time and place that assails the senses. She subtly plants that seed of love and nurtures it through all the hero and heroine’s hang-ups and hurts; through life-threatening, nail-biting conflicts and tends it through the tender sprouting stage of love to the sensual, sizzling love that brings them to their happy-ever-after.

In The Barrister’s Bed is a tantalizing tale.

Virginia Dean wakes at midnight beside a dead body, with a bloody knife in her hand and no memory of the evening’s events. Dark energy, emanating from the mirrors lining the room, overpowers her senses. With no apparent way in or out, she is rescued by a man she has met only once before, but won’t soon forget.

Owen Sweetwater inherited his family’s talent for hunting the psychical monsters who prey on London’s women and children, and his investigation into the deaths of two glass-readers has led him here. The high-society types of the exclusive Arcane Society would consider Virginia an illusionist, a charlatan, even a criminal, but Owen knows better. Virginia’s powers are real-and they just might be the key to solving this challenging case.

Sometimes I need a book that has light action, dark secrets and mystery, and a romance that soothes the senses and I always seem to find it when reading a story by Amanda Quick.

Some might say that the format is formulaic and they could be right. However, I’ve read enough stories by Ms. Quick to count on it and find it 100% positive. I needed that teasing sensual build-up between Virginia Dean and Owen Sweetwater, I needed the light drama and suspense and I required a book that would entertain me enough to forget looking at the clock. I wanted to simply enjoy myself with a tale that swept me away to a time and place where the odd and spooky were normal and indeed, presented as almost logical. I demanded a guaranteed good time and Ms. Quick delivered.

Virginia Dean is a character that is a delightful change from the typical historical heroine. She’s in ‘trade’, educated and mostly self-sufficient. She’s not easily thrown by deed or word and even when she’s threatened with diabolical paranormal weapons, this woman never resorts to swooning. She has a brain and is not afraid to use it. The heroine also has an almost child-like fascination with learning new skills and her excitement is contagious. Her willingness and enthusiasm for such mundane and obscure things ends up being the key to saving her life. She also has a very odd notion of bling. Only a reader of the story will understand my reference. I liked her generosity of spirit, her voice that comes through in the dialogue and her choice of friends. Virginia was fun to get to know.

Owen Sweetwater is fascinating. In fact, his whole family has enough secrets and know-how to fuel many stories to come. They’re an odd bunch with more twisted paranormal burdens than usual. I appreciated how Ms. Quick enlightened the heroine and reader alike about the family’s peccadilloes through dialogue and action. It almost seems like they are supermen who can do amazing things. However, they’re regular people which means that the use of their talents come at a price. What I found adorable is that one of the ‘cures’, seems to be love. As with all stories based on that emotion, it’s a rocky and tricky road to travel before it can blossom into a happily ever after. Of course Owen has some serious obstacles to overcome before he can breathe easy and that contributed to the book’s drama.

The conflict, besides Owen and Virginia overcoming their differences and getting to know one another, is a mystery of who killed who and why. The why of it, once explained, is bizarre and totally off the wall, but again, a reader will understand the depths of its ludicrousness when they get to that part in the story. If a reader is paying attention, Ms. Quick actually provided a solid clue as to the villain’s identity. I picked up on it but like the masterful storyteller she is, the author threw in a big surprise that made it even better and heightened the suspense.

I enjoyed Virginia’s friend, Charlotte. Dr. Spinner, though completely off-screen, has got my curiosity piqued and those that I’ve met of Owen’s family, were entertaining and interesting. Then there is the family connection for Virginia that was a nice touch. It wasn’t crucial to the solving of the mystery itself but it did help showcase the heroine’s personality, integrity and ability to think on her feet. It helps a reader understand her character more.

Quicksilver once again shows why stories by Ms. Quick are an auto-buy. They have re-readability, characters with interesting dialogue, unusual and flamboyant take-over-the-world plots and a well-crafted romance to steam the pages. With its chapters populated by such eccentric characters who contrive convoluted means to further their devious goals, it brings to mind the old television series, The Avengers, with Steed and Mrs. Peel. In a way, Owen and Virginia could be their historical counterparts and I think that’s really cool. Quicksilver is pure fun and entertainment, just the way I like it.

Gabriel Marsh, known as the Dark Angel, is a Federation assassin. An Angelus, he’s been brought up with high moral standards and rigid ethics. When he meets Deirdre Karanov, a shy blonde with a penchant for black market coffee and strawberries, he’s instantly smitten.

But Deirdre is a Variant, a type of human whose body can switch into a separate person of the opposite sex at will. She is at the mercy of her domineering Other, Lexei, another government assassin who uses her as a decoy to get near his targets.

When Marsh is partnered with Lexei for an assignment, he makes it his mission to free Deirdre from the chains of Lexei’s dominance. But double-crosses, enemy soldiers, and Lexei’s cruelty conspire to stop him. The more he sees of Deidre, the more Marsh realizes he can’t live without her. But is his love enough to set her free?

Assassins are always a favorite basis for a book, they’re hardcore, strong, usually handsome and/or beautiful and incredibly skilled. The lone assassin or spy falling in love is a well-used plot-line so there usually has to be something pretty exceptional to make it stand out. This story definitely delivers. In the first place, there’s a whole set of worlds to explore, not just one, which gives this well used plot-line a good solid boost.

The author takes it a step further by mixing polar opposites in this governmental assassin team; a morally upright individual partnered with an open and highly sexual one. It creates an explosive and dynamite combination. In addition, this highly sexual character has an alter ego because of what he is; he can change into an entirely different person with a completely different personality and different sex. This makes him a highly effective assassin.

Trouble ensues when Gabriel, the morally upright assassin, falls in love with his partner Lexei’s alter ego. Difficulties occur, angst has its place and a mission gone wrong brings everything together. The worlds were believable, the technology and rules were definitely within the realm of possibility, something necessary for any science fiction and fantasy story. The plot flowed well but was a little fast and some things could have used a bit more detail. Overall, this was a good story, an excellent twist on a well-used plot line that gave it new life and new interest.

She never wanted marriage…

When a friend is forced to consider a marriage of convenience, Lady Amelia Staunton is determined to rescue her. But her plans trap her in an illicit seduction, and Amelia must marry him herself. Malcolm’s all-consuming kisses and devilish humor might make up for her lost freedom, but she believes he will force her to abandon the Gothic romances she yearns to write. Since she can’t escape him, she must distract him from her secret…

He isn’t looking for love…

A powerful autocrat with a well-hidden rebellious streak, Malcolm MacCabe doesn’t need another beautiful mistress – he needs an obedient wife. Obedience is not one of Amelia’s virtues. But he’s too enthralled by her wit and passion to let her go – even if it means risking the political reputation he is building to save his clan.

Their hearts can’t survive the scandal…

Despite their intentions, every wicked embrace binds them together. But as their conflicting desires combust into insatiable hunger and unavoidable ruin, they must decide whether to pursue their personal destinies alone – or fight for the love that could destroy them both.

‘The best laid plans’ suffer a fatal blow when Lady Amelia Staunton’s scheming and meddling to help her friend Prudence goes awry. Late at night in the old Scottish castle library, Malcolm MacCabe, Lord of Carnach, kisses Amelia at a fateful time. Not only Prudence, whom Malcolm had planned to offer for, but also Alex, Amelia’s brother, sees the kiss. Now, as Granddad would say, “the fat’s in the fire”. No shrinking violets in this cast of characters, and what an exciting vicarious experience they invite the reader to enjoy.

Amelia and Prudence’s friendship in severely strained if not totally broken; Prudence’s plan to marry for financial security is dashed; Amelia’s plan for independence and freedom to write her novels is in jeopardy; Malcolm’s plan–to marry an obedient wife to bear his heir, be a perfect hostess to promote his plan to gain power in Parliament and to use that power to help his people–takes a direct hit. What a mess all over ONE kiss!

Amelia can be “propriety deluxe” with icy perfection, constrained, contained, unattainable, and “unconquerable”, but only for so long because in truth, she, and most everyone else, knows she’s headstrong, meddlesome, too witty, opinionated, sarcastic, independent, certainly not obedient; and even though she has a good heart she has a bad temper plus secrets that could ruin her and make Malcolm the laughingstock of London ton. Oh, yes, she is a delicious heroine.

Malcolm tells himself that “duty and fidelity” is first and distractions are not welcome, but Amelia is a distraction that heats his blood. He would have fit right in with his ancestors who fought other clans and the English. He’s a warrior and an autocratic at times, but has a hint of ”reiver” in him. All his stern talks to himself about duty first seems to fall on deaf ears when it comes to the misfit for a wife—Amelia—she has really mucked things up. She has his mind, heart and other parts on full alert. But does he have the right to the joy she gives him rather than using his all to help his clansmen?

Sara Ramsey makes Scotsmen Prefer Blondes throb with life. The sparkling humor, sensual, sizzling love scenes (my gracious, do they rev up the heart rate!), dialogue that keeps the reader on full alert, the undercurrent of suspense, compelling descriptions of people and places, plus characters so strong they almost jump off the pages with energy and determination keeps one turning pages.

The secondary characters help propel the action along at a breathtaking pace at times. If you have read the first book in this series Heiress Without a Cause, You will recognize many of the characters. They all have their own secrets, flaws, and foibles that help make Scotsmen Prefer Blondes intriguing. This one is a keeper, just as is the first novel. I’m looking forward to the next one entitled The Marquess Who Loved Me. Sara Ramsey’s characters captivate and are fun to spend time with.

Their love breaks all bounds. Richard is lord of Wykeford—and Eleanor’s lord. She is a former bondswoman, now free. When they meet, their lives change forever as a love that can’t be denied burns between them. She is strong and fierce. He is a gentle warrior. Together, they fight for their future against all odds.

But there is one in the lord’s household who’s not pleased and who will stop at nothing to break Richard and Eleanor apart, even at the cost of murder.

The clever beginning of The Lord and Eleanor, with the mention of ‘rope burns’, pulled me right into the story instantly. Why rope burns?  I needed to know more.

Ms. Townsend’s gentle writing style makes perfect sense of this intriguing beginning to her story and in few words paints a picture of Eleanor, her heroine, strong in adversity, caring beyond measure and prepared to stand up for her rights against deep seated prejudice.

Cleverly, she depicted Richard, her hero and local Lord, as a man ‘wanting’ and for a few moments I wondered how the author intended to take the reader over the gap between ‘wanting’ and loving. I need not have worried. Richard has loved and lost and has a caring and instinctive nature that recognizes his interest for Eleanor as what it is; the stirring of something far stronger than lust.

The small community and all the prejudices that come with such an environment, are woven into the plot, as is the antagonist. The Lord and Eleanor is short and packs in a lot of detail, emotion and tension and if I have a small nit to pick with Ms. Townsend’s story it’s the outcome of the antagonist; unless, that is, she intends to bring him into another story.

Ms. Townsend paints vivid word pictures of her settings, and weaves action and emotions into them with apparent ease.

The secondary characters, including the children all have their parts to play, to carry the story forward and the bonding between the children was utterly believable.

The author left this reader sighing with satisfaction and closing the book with the word ‘charming’ running through my mind.

Brandr the Far-Traveled is revered by his fellow vikings: his bed skills are the stuff of steamy legend, his sword sings of death on the field of battle, and he can call up fire from thin air. Enslaved through trickery, he’s determined to woo his new owner into freeing him. Too bad her heart’s as icy as the frozen North. Katla is sworn to avenge her husband’s death at the hands of Brandr’s father. But she didn’t count on Brandr’s dangerous masculinity or the way he awakens her long forgotten desires. Can Brandr seduce his way free, or will love make slaves of them both?

After five years away from home, serving as a Varangian Guard for the Byzantine emperor, Brandr, son of Ulf has finally reached his beloved Hardanger Fjord. As the son of the current jarl, a strong warrior and fire mage in his own right, he is nonetheless captured, stripped and, wearing the collar of a thrall, or slave, is presented thus to Katla, head of a farmstead and all of its surrounding people. Katla’s brothers captured Brandr as retribution for his father murdering Katla’s husband. They seek to humiliate both Brandr and his father with Brandr’s thrall status. As time goes by, an attraction forms between the two. When Katla’s brothers insist she choose a husband from one of the wealthy men they parade before her, as an independent spirit, Katla surprises all by making her choice…Brandr. But there’s more than marriage in store, there’s political wrangling and betrayal ahead for them all. Will Katla and Brandr survive to make a real marriage? Can these two strong and stubborn people learn it is better to unite than fight? Katla will need Brandr’s help and support to save her people from the evil that is coming for them all.

Connie Mason and Mia Marlowe have written an intriguing and absorbing historical look at the people of the North, with all the harsh and unyielding conditions of the time, and the passions that ruled the people. This is not a pretty world: it is hard living, harsh conditions and danger at every turn. The people have learned that they need to fight for what is theirs, and revenge is swift in many cases. This is a well-crafted world, and I was drawn to the characters from the beginning. The authors were able to bring to life not only the passions ruling the characters, but the small joys and disappointments inherent in the rough life these people lived.

Katla is strong and stubborn, determined to care for her people after the death of her husband, even though theirs was never a love match. She doesn’t need another husband, someone to take over and ruin all the good she’s done for her people. When her brothers present her with a naked and bound Brandr, she was, at first, determined to make him suffer for the sins of his father. But as time goes by, she begins to respect first his strength, and then to admire his honor and his beauty. I enjoyed watching Katla test Brandr’s limits, and her open minded appreciation of his strength and skill in all he does. I liked watching as she finally discovered that she wanted to be desired by him and her sudden insecurity where he’s concerned.

Brandr Ulfson is a strong man, and an honorable one. From his first appearance, naked, shorn and bound, there’s never an indication that he’s less of a man, or warrior than before. He’s determined to not bring shame to his family, even as he’s being belittled and treated as the basest of slaves. As he realizes why he’s been treated as he was, he knows that he must accept his fate as revenge for what his father took from these people: their lord, leader and husand. As his attraction for Katla grows, I enjoyed watching the small tricks he would pull, to make her accept him as more than just her thrall. I enjoyed watching as he discovered a love he never counted on with Katla.

There’s a dangerous hidden agenda with one of the prospective suitors brought before Katla for her choice as husband. Katla’s brothers each have a motivation to see her wed: each has plans for a future that doesn’t include staying on the farmstead as gentleman farmers. When the danger strikes, they all realize the one who can help them is Brandr, who is now Katla’s husband. But betrayal is around every turn in the road, and soon, everyone is in peril for their lives. There are several surprising twists and lots of passion and fighting to keep the reader hanging on every word. Katla nd Brandr enjoy a very hard won happy ever after, but only after severe trials and tribulation. I recommend this for historical lovers who like danger with their happy endings.

All her life, Callie O’Rourke wanted to be a firefighter. A lifelong nightmare of being in a fire has driven her to pursue a career to fight fires and save lives. She won’t let being a woman stop her from achieving that goal. When her determination and training land her a job, Callie has no idea being the city’s first female firefighter will gain the attention of more than just its citizens.

Although haunted since childhood by the fiery death of his father, firefighting is in Danny Redmond’s blood. He comes from a long line of firemen, all the way back to his great-grandfather.

Callie’s refreshing candor ignites Danny’s interest. With her ability to fight fires, combined with the way she puts him at ease, it’s not long before they become friends. Focused on being the best firefighters possible, neither is looking for romance. Yet the more they’re together, the more they realize firefighting may not be their biggest challenge.

The world is full of books. Endless amounts of them. But there are only a few rare books that you pull out to read and, when finished, you’re overcome with such intense emotion. Sparks is one of those books. The experience I had as a reader while engaged in this powerful, riveting story had me in a whirl of feelings.

Callie O’Rourke is Fairmont’s first female firefighter. She’s a bit of a news maker with this status. Callie’s strong willed, fierce, and takes many risks, but these risks are to save lives. She thinks with her heart and her head. She’s had a lot of things to deal with in life, but Callie has definitely overcome obstacles to get where she is today. Though she didn’t get off on the right note with Danny Redmond, the hero.

Danny is a bit complicated. This man has not been whole for a long time. In a tragic chain of events, Danny’s life changed when he was a child, and the things he feels and never completely dealt with affect him to this day. He’s not too happy about Callie, but oh my, do things change for him rather quickly.

Written with such intense depth, Sparks draws readers into a wild ride of feelings, a bit of adventure, and a whole lot of love. The conflict keeps the story line tight. Just when I thought Callie and Danny were on their way to a beautiful relationship, some startling revelations come to light, spiraling everyone involved into a confused state. Talk about characters going through turmoil. This novel brings a sense of family and community together. A feeling of nostalgia washed over me many times, as reading this made me think of the times where people looked out for one another a lot more, and strong family ties were more prevalent.

There are touching moments, I wiped away tears more than once. This book is beautifully written. Strong characterization, stunning plot, and at times I held my breath, unsure of what would happen next. Fair warning, readers–this book is going to grab hold of you tight, and won’t let go even after the end. I find myself still thinking about Callie, Danny, and the rest of the crew at the fire station. Sparks lives up to it’s name, in every sense of the word. This is a story that can be read over and over. It’s a keeper!

If you love contemporary romances that have tendencies to bring out tears of joy, gut wrenching pangs of fear, and a powerful love story, let Sparks light up your life. Don’t miss this stunning novel!
