Old buildings have an eerie haunting feeling, and the 17th Century Manor house in the Cornish countryside Julia intends to restore, is no exception. Originally her dead husband’s dream, she feels it’s up to her to complete it in his memory. When she arrives, she realizes it’ll take more than a quick clean to put the dilapidated old Manor to rights.

Darting shadows and movements, seen from the corner of her eyes, seem to confirm sinister happenings at the Manor in the past. The discovery of an old diary hidden in a chest of drawers and the story it tells, lead Julia in a different direction than she originally thought she would be taking.

Grief does funny things to people. All it’s made Julia want to do so far is turn back the hands of time. Will a change of scenery help her or will it only make her miss her husband even more?

I was expecting a lot of things out of this story, but laughter certainly wasn’t one of them. Ms. Addicoat has a bawdy sense of humor that worked really well with these particular characters. It’s difficult to say anything else about this without giving away spoilers, but the scenes that dipped into this genre were by far my favorite ones of them all.

It would have been helpful to get to know Julia better. She switched so rapidly between serious indecisiveness and giving clearcut instructions to her new servants that I was never quite sure which side of her personality was the more accurate one. Julia also had a few ditzy moments that seemed out of character for someone who has been successfully self-employed for so many years, but once again I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to find her a little flighty or if I was reading too much into the clues that were provided about the kind of person she was before her husband died.

The romantic elements of this tale are just as strong as the fantasy ones. At first I was little skeptical of how everything would be tied together since there were so many things going on in the plot simultaneously, but the people involved in it were given ample time to get to know each other first. Allowing their attraction to one another to heat up slowly was definitely the right choice in this case!

I’d particularly recommend Spirit of Love to anyone who likes paranormal romance novels that have one foot planted solidly in each genre.

Five years pass before he finds her again. Just when things start heating up between them, Darcy is taken by their enemies. Angelo must fight to free his one true love. Will he be in time?

After years of searching, Angelo has found his eternal bride. Problem is, she doesn’t even know he exists. For the time being, Angelo knows that’s probably the only thing saving her from the Nobles. For centuries, the order of the Nobles has made it their life passion to hunt and destroy vampires. Knowing the easiest way to catch their prey was to steal an eternal bride, the Nobles target all brides, especially newfound ones. However, they don’t just capture a vampire’s bride and hold her prisoner. A newly claimed bride is a real prize, for the union of a vampire bride and a Noble produces a Noble with exceptional power and strength, a coveted offspring indeed. Unfortunately, the brides aren’t willing captives and therefore must suffer through being raped during their fertile time. It’s truly a barbaric practice for an order that considers themselves “Nobles”.

Angelo can’t claim Darcy until she’s 23 years old. Fearing the safety of his bride until he can she’s of age, he decides to remain in the shadows and just watch for a while, waiting until he could confront and claim her. Nevertheless, the Nobles are one step ahead of his plan, before he knows it, his bride disappears and it’s a long six years before he’ll find her again.

Darcy knows a little about vampires and eternal brides, but not enough to really consider that she may be one of them, and a special one on top of that. Abandoned as a young child, she’s had a lifetime of heartache and loneliness. It’s no wonder she jumps into a relationship with the first man that pays attention to her. Karl seems to appear out of nowhere and promises her all the things in life she longs for, particularly love. But love is blind and there’s more to Karl than Darcy knows. His motives are far from admirable. In the world of immortals, there’s a good side and bad. Let’s just say Karl does not have Darcy’s best interest at heart. It’s all about saving ass, specifically, his own.

The beginning of Sapphire Angel goes through a blur of time. The prologue introduces some of the main characters and gives the reader a little bit of background about vampires and eternal brides, and then the story jumps ahead six years. It seemed a bit odd that Angelo couldn’t find Darcy after she disappeared. He’s described as being pretty well off financially. I would imagine that a vampire with unlimited resources could find anyone they wanted quickly. When he does find her, it’s in the same place he’d found her initially, which makes me believe she never went very far away to begin with. There are several instances throughout the book that describe the technology as a bit archaic for both the Nobles and vampires, considering their described wealth. I found myself having a hard time accepting the plot at times. It just didn’t seem to jive.

Character development was minimal. We do get an acceptable amount of Darcy’s history, which explains some of her emotional hang-ups, particularly concerning commitment and attachment. She’d been abandoned as a child—or so she thinks—by her mother and father. It’s easy to see why she’s starving for affection, but some of her choices seem a bit reckless. She goes home with a man she doesn’t know not once, but twice from the bar. When Angelo finally confronts her, she seems to accept the fact that he’s a vampire and she’s an eternal bride pretty quickly, no questions asked. I do get that she’s just caught her boyfriend cheating on her and probably feels like getting even. Angelo sounds tempting. I might have done the same thing myself. She does regain some of her common sense when Angelo goes to claim her and she puts the brakes on. It’s a big decision and I was glad to see she didn’t rush into it under the influence of alcohol and a broken heart. It’s also proves to be a saving grace later on when it’s mating time in the Noble stronghold.

Angelo is a charming fellow. His whole world revolves around Darcy. When she’s taken from him a second time, his distress is palpable. The second part of the book really began to draw me in as I watched the steps he takes to not only save his bride, but others as well. We also learn quite a bit more about Darcy’s past when she meets an unexpected relative in the Noble’s stronghold. Even Karl manages to redeem himself, before the end.

While I think some things could have been ironed out a bit more, overall the story was enjoyable and made for a pleasant afternoon read. The Nobles certainly have a powerful ploy in bringing their prey to their knees, but the vampires quickly show them that while they might be down, they certainly are not out. One false move, the tables suddenly turn and all Hell breaks loose at several Noble strongholds across the globe. I liked how the author left us hanging in the epilogue, hinting the possibility of another story in this saga. I for one am curious to see what might happen next.

Life is carefree for Ryder MacLaren who loves to see what is on the other side of the sunrise. Laird of Clan MacLaren, he is wealthy, handsome and happily unencumbered…until stunning Christel McClellan enters his life. When he hears her story, he believes the child she thought dead has been sold to a wealthy buyer.

I began reading this story expecting another typical regency romance. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it wasn’t! From the end of the first chapter, it was one exciting thing after another.

The heroine, Christel, is attacked by a nobleman who wanted to marry her for her money. She flees to a nunnery and then to an isolated castle owned by Ryder, the man she has just become engaged to, but who isn’t currently present. Once he returns home, the story became a terrifying tale of them trying to find and do away with the man who was looking for her.

I loved the rapport between the two main characters. Although at times they both struggled to find the right words to explain their feelings for each other, somehow they managed. They both loved the other and so over time it became easier. Both were also very independent and that caused a little friction between them. However, Ryder would typically just shake his head and go with the flow. There were a huge number of sex scenes, and I think this story would have stood alone quite well without so many (there were times they did nothing to forward the plot, but seemed added just to have a sex scene), but they didn’t detract from the plot either.

There were so many other fascinating and fun characters in the story: her sister, her cousins, their husbands, her aunt, the Duchess. Reading about all the things they attempted and succeeded in doing was really fun. They were not the typical regency “tonnish” people of the days. This made this story much more fun.

And of course, although there was a lot of fighting, terror, murder and mayhem, the story has a very satisfying ending.

Each of these four books are just right for a day’s reading–they are sweet, magical, and highly satisfying. The authors are all new to me and I will definitely be checking out their other works–and a couple of the worlds I would love to see in longer works– especially C.L. Kraemer’s “Defying the Odds” and Genie Gabriel’s “No More Poodle Skirts.” There are secondary characters in both of those novellas I would like to visit again and discover their stories. Christine Young’s “Highland Miracle” and Rosemary Indra’s “Love in Bloom” are cute standalone stories that I thoroughly enjoyed. Kudos to all the others!

Thomas O’Shea is the bad boy in a family of overachievers, haunted by what he saw as a child. When he turns to a woman known as The Wizard to help him solve the mystery of his adoptive father’s death, the killers start closing in. His childhood memories hold the key to saving his family–if they can uncover the truth buried beneath years of fear and deceit.

Legacy of Truth is the 8th book in Genie Gabriel’s Halo Legacy series and can be read on its own. However, I have to admit that I think the reader would get the full effect of the book better if they were more familiar with the series. This is the first book of the series I read and there were times I found myself confused with the characters. I’m thinking that if I had read the series from the beginning, I might have found the read easier going.

That said, I loved the main characters—I really liked how the author put two damaged people together and showed how they could help heal each other. The mystery portion of the book was well done as well.

There were parts in the story that seemed to make leaps from one situation to the other and I had to go back and reread some of those sections. I don’t know whether they alluded to things that might have happened in earlier books or not, but that was the only drawback I saw to the book.

I am definitely going to go back and pick up the rest of the series–I’d really like to get to know these characters better and find out more about them and their lives.

These are dark days for Naphthali. The king has been murdered, the land invaded by the Imperial Army. It will absorb Naphthali into an Empire that stretches across all of Enialé at any cost. The ravaged people cling to an ancient promise, an assurance that a prophesied savior will come to set them free.

Daniel Martin is trapped in a life that hasn’t gone as expected. His pharmacy is struggling and he is losing all hope of making a difference in his patients’ lives. His family is the one shining light in his disenchanted life, but he is torn from them when an accident draws him to Naphthali. The people need him, but Daniel is driven by his need to return to the family he loves. Is he the Prophesied One? Only time will tell as both the Empire and the Resistance battle for Daniel while the fate of Naphthali hangs in the balance…

Daniel Martin, a pharmacist in a small Midwest town, is driving home in a blinding snowstorm when his SUV skids on black ice, sliding downhill, flipping, crashing through a fence, landing on an iced-over pond, and finally, as the ice cracks, sinking into the pond. Trapped in his SUV, Daniel panics and then loses consciousness. As his consciousness returns, he finds himself in the middle of a battle, lying with his feet in a stream, in what must be early summer. He has no memory of how he got there, but he is now in a strange world called Naphthali where a battle between the Empire and the Resistance is raging.

Ron Hartman has written an exciting and well-paced novel. He quickly brings his reader into a totally new world, describing the land and the people in vivid detail. The main character, Daniel Martin, is a well-rounded fully developed person. Daniel’s reactions as he encounters a level of brutality and inhumanity which he was totally unprepared for is completely believable, and he is a very sympathetic character.

Hartman narrates Daniel’s burning desire to recover his memories and to return to his own world, while at the same time, trying to cope with the belief on the part of his new world, that somehow, Daniel is the promised Stranger, destined to fulfill an ancient prophesy and save the world from the Empire. The struggle with beliefs, Daniel’s, the Empire’s, and the Resistance’s, is shown in great detail. The reader feels Daniel’s conflict, his desire to return to his own world, but also his desire to help the Resistance.

Hartman uses Daniel’s trials as a way of demonstrating that the realities of life are rarely black or white. Can Daniel become a savior just because that is who the people believe him to be? How does Daniel cope with all the violence in this new world, especially the deaths that are a direct result of his arrival? Is Daniel just a pawn being swept along by events or does he have control over his destiny? These are perennial questions which give meaning to life, and Hartman treats them sensitively, showing the many sides to Daniel’s situation.

I really enjoyed this novel and all I can say now is that I sincerely hope that Hartman is writing around the clock to get the next novel in this series into the hands of his readers. I for one can’t wait for the next volume.

Once freed, Prince Alexander Novelle, along with his friends and comrades, face a perilous journey deep behind enemy lines. Their destination is Castle Varanasi. The once proud Laristan capital, gateway to heaven and salvation, lines in ruins under Dolus occupation.

Mysterious assassins, underworld savages and renegade Dolus survivors stand between them and the answers they seek. What they find there will shatter their perceptions and lead to unknown perils none of them are ready to face.

Death stalkers, treason, murder and a prince who may become king give this book the flavor of an epic fantasy. No one is what they seem. And what they have been taught is not all true…

Mr. Young writes a very busy, detailed story that catches your attention in the first few pages. His characters are strong, honorable, and determined to do the right thing. The author creates an adventure that is a bit reminiscent of “Dungeons and Dragons”. There are Death stalkers (mercenaries that kill for pay and are deadly at their job), there is an order of sisters who are more than they seem, and religion forbids technology.

This is the earth in the future and it’s more like medieval times. The end of the world as we know it has given way to superstitions, less technology, and a struggle for power. Subways are beneath the earth and known only to a few. Everyone knows there is nothing on the other side of the mountain. The big disaster took care of that. But do they really know what they know?

With intrigue rife within the small band protecting the prince, Mr. Young develops an intertwined plot line that is only partially revealed in this volume. When you end the story, you’ll be wishing you had the next book to read. The characters are real enough to grab your interest and make you care about them, and you want to see what will happen next.

The author does a nice job of embellishing his tale with monsters, lies, tricks, and murder. If you like battles, action, hardship, comradery and determination, this story is for you.
