I love books set at the turn of the century. This was my favorite time to study art… and the clothes! Oh my. Imogen Robertson conveys the opulence and the decadence of the period well. Her writing is exciting and drew me in right away.

I have to admit, the book isn’t exceedingly complex, but for me that was okay. I liked immersing myself in the worlds of Yvette, Maud and Tanya. All three show different parts of society at the time. I rooted for all of them. Yvette was my favorite because she was the most realistic. She held her own and managed to keep her true background hidden. That took a lot of guts.

The scenes and characters are written beautifully. I felt like I was there with them, looking at the art and learning about the artists. I loved my time in Paris via this book.

There is a little bit of mystery to the story, but I wouldn’t classify the book as a mystery. It’s more of an air of mystery that adds to the story.

If you want to meet interesting characters, visit a lush Paris, and lose yourself for a few hours, then this might be the book you’ve been looking for.

There are some books that stick with me. Those are the books that made some sort of emotional connection. In this case, the book just plain instilled good old fashioned creepiness. I couldn’t put it down, but then I was sort of afraid to.

I do have to note there were quite a few typos and some sentences that, with a little more editing, could be trimmed to make the story flow better. I was still able to read the book, but these were distractions.

Having mental illness in my family, I could identify with Debra’s character. It’s scary to even fathom that one could be sinking into mental illness. Julie, her friend, is another character that is easy to relate to. Her children have grown and are about to fly free of the nest. It’s tough to have the kids grow up, even if it’s inevitable. I liked how they leaned on each other and became a great support for each other.

This is a book that’s sure to please and will definitely stay with the reader long after the last page. Grab this book if you’re up for a story with heart and a good scare factor. You won’t want to miss it.

This is my first book by Victoria Roberts, but it won’t be my last. The writing flows well. Once I started the story, I couldn’t put it down. I needed to know what would happen next. The characters are intriguing and well, it was a pleasant change of pace to read this book.

Ravenna is a strong heroine. She doesn’t take guff from anyone. I liked that. She’s not the stereotypical damsel like in some historical reads. She held her own with him, but the way they came together was very good. It was like she was meant to be there, even if she didn’t initially think so.

Ruari is an interesting character. He’s all alpha, all the way. He doesn’t take guff from anyone. I did like how he could become putty in Ravenna’s hands, though. The tension between Ravenna and Ruari is palpable. I rooted for them to get together from the first meeting. They sizzle on the page.

There were twists, turns and events in the plot that I didn’t see coming. I’m looking forward to more from Ms Roberts. Well done.

I wanted to see those parties and feel like I had gone along with the characters.  The author does a great job with his descriptions.  This isn’t a big book and reads rather quickly. It’s written in a snappy manner, so it’s easy to follow–for the most part. I had to reread a few parts, but nothing enough to deter me from continuing.

Persephone did annoy me at times. The woman is pretty much perfect and I had a hard time relating to her. I wanted her to have some faults, but I understood why she wasn’t going to show them.

The writing is snappy, like I said. Once I started the book, I read it in one sitting.  If you want a glimpse into the beautiful life, then this might be the book for you.

I picked up a copy of Where’d You Go, Bernadette at the urging of my book club. They all raved about this novel, so I figured it must be something I needed to read. I’m glad I got the chance to delve into Bernadette’s world. She’s definitely an interesting character. If there was ever a case-study in eccentricity, then she should be near the top of the list. She’s very complex and took a while to understand. I’ll get back to her in a moment.

I have to admit, by looking at the cover and listening to the feedback from friends, I thought this would be a breezy beach-type read. It’s not. The style of writing takes the form of letters and emails and is told through the perspective of Bernadette’s daughter. At times, it’s confusing and at other times, well, I wanted to pitch the book across the room.

Why? For being so smart and eccentric, Bernadette is a mess. I rather liked her, though. She’s been through some read crud in her life and she deals with in her own way. I could empathize with her frustrations with the world. She claims to be agoraphobic to the point of needing a personal assistant she doesn’t have to see in order to get through her day. In reality, she just doesn’t like people. She’s been frustrated so much in her life that she’s shut down. Haven’t we all had moments where we want to throw our hands in the air in defeat? As much as I liked her messiness and her issues, I got a tad tired of them.

Then there is the husband. He’s a piece of work. He’s ridiculously smart and compartmentalizes…everything. I liked that he had some issues–like not seeing Bernadette’s issues much earlier on–but again, I tired of him being so self-centered. He’s got a woman on the side, which I didn’t appreciate. If cheaters in the book aren’t well liked, then this might be a book to take a pass on. But more than that, when the husband does realize there’s an issue, he goes overboard.

I guess that’s my biggest issue with this book. Yes, it’s a satire, but it’s so far overboard that sometimes I couldn’t suspend my disbelief enough to keep reading. I walked away from this book quite a few times before I actually finished it. I only finished it because I had to know what the ultimate outcome was–which I thought came rather abruptly and with little closure.

This might not have been the right book for me, but if you’re interested in a book that takes place vividly in Seattle and want to read about characters that are a little off the mark, then this might be the novel for you.

This is my first book by Erika Almond and I’m glad I got the chance to read it. The story is short, but don’t let that be a deterrent. It’s hot and has interesting characters that stayed with me far after the last page.

I breezed through this story in one sitting. There weren’t any heavy plot points or times when I had to think. The story was very much the type to get lost in for an hour.

There were a few things I had an issue with. One was how the two main characters and one of the side characters all said the word, ‘shitfire’. While this might not bother some readers, having all of the characters say this particular phrase really stood out. Maybe it was vernacular normal for the setting of story, but when I noticed all three had said this it ripped me from the story. Another thing that took me out of the story was the use of the word honeypot. In erotic romance, this word wasn’t terribly romantic to me. Again, it might not bother some readers, so maybe it won’t deter you.

I do have to say the plot twist in the story had me wanting to finish. I needed to know who would end up together. The story trope, girl rejects best friend for a celebrity (or in this case, up-and-coming celebrity) isn’t new, but Almond writes it in a fresh way.

The characters are interesting and I needed to know what would happen to them. So who are the players in this tale chock full of twists and turns? Sebastian is a wounded man. His girl ran off with his best friend. To deal with his upset, he drinks. It’s not pretty, but it’s his life. His lifeline? Helena. What a lifeline! She’s got a mission and won’t deviate from it. I loved her pluck. I also loved the way Ms Grace wrote her. It was like reading about my close friends falling in love. I could identify with Helena’s determination to get what she needed.

This is a fast-paced book. There were a couple of spots where I had to read, then reread to make sure I was up to speed on what was happening. The characters do fall in love rather quickly, which took a little bit to believe, but I liked the ride.

If you want a book that has both sweet and cute moments, but will stay with you long after the last page, then this is the book for you.

There were times when I liked Trevor, then there were times I wanted to sock him in the head. The guy has issues, I won’t lie. I understood why he has them and won’t get into them here, but he’s screwed up. I did like how his past formed his views on the future and made him into the man he’d become. I appreciated how he got to know Allie, despite having her work for him. But sometimes his issues were distracting.

Still, the love scenes sizzle and I enjoyed the read. If you like a book that’s a little off the beaten path and loaded with heat, then this might be the book for you.

I’m glad I picked up this book. I wasn’t sure if I’d like it at first. Romantic suspense isn’t my favorite genre, but I thought, why not? I’m glad I did. I was in for a thrill ride.

Speaking of Rafe and Harper, these are two complicated characters. Harper doesn’t believe a man can stick around in a relationship. Most women, me included, can identify with her struggle to trust. She’s also in love with the high of action–she wants to be in the thick of things. That was great. I love strong female characters.

Rafe is another complication, but he’s oh-so-handsome. I’d get complicated with him. He’s torn. Harper reminds him of someone from his past, but if he gets involved with her, will he be able to keep the two separate? He’s got one heck of a conundrum. I liked how he had to work through his feelings. I loved how he and Harper worked together. The sparks are definitely evident.

If you want a book chock full of twists, turns, and white hot realism, then this might be the book for you. Worth the read.

Granted, in a family of three sisters, with beaus to go around, there will be quite a cast of characters. Once I got into the book, keeping everyone straight got a lot easier. The more I read, the more I wanted. I wanted to know what would happen with all of the characters, because even if I didn’t like them on one page, by the next I liked them again.

Cecily was my favorite. She’s got a boat load of troubles. She thinks she likes one guy, but kind of likes another, too. She’s easy for the reader to relate to because I could see a lot of me in her. She struggles with her decisions and not upsetting her family. Easy to understand.

I also liked Todd. Whether he’s the one for Cecily aside, he tries so hard. Gotta give him credit for that. He wants to make her happy, even if he’s less than happy. He’s endearing.

In the end, the book works and that’s what matters the most.

If you want a book that’s heavy on heart and family, then this might be the book for you.
