In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes.

In another part of town, months later, a retired cop named Bill Hodges is still haunted by the unsolved crime. When he gets a crazed letter from someone who self-identifies as the “perk” and threatens an even more diabolical attack, Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing another tragedy.

Brady Hartfield lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. He loved the feel of death under the wheels of the Mercedes, and he wants that rush again.

Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.

There aren’t many books that have scared the crap out of me, but this book is right at the top of this list.

I’ve only read a few books that didn’t just stay with me, but haunted me. Mr. Mercedes is one of them. The scene with the car running into the crowd of people isn’t just freaking scary…it’s scary because it really could happen. In this day an age, this is something you can see on television and experience in your own town. This really hit home for me because I’ve been in large crowd situations. What if one of those situations ended with a Mercedes being driven into the crowd?

Stephen King always writes books with a twist. There are so many in this book, it was hard to keep up. I’m not complaining, though. I liked being kept on the edge of my seat. Every time I thought, okay, this will happen…it didn’t. That’s one of the marks of a great book.

Although he’s not a typical hero character, I liked Hodges. He’s a former detective and hard-boiled for sure, but he’s worth rooting for. Jerome was my other favorite. I loved his savvy. I think the one I liked the best was Holly. She seems like she’d be a completely secondary character. You’ll have to read the book to find out what happens, but I guarantee its worth it. I couldn’t put the book down and when I got to the end, I read as fast as possible.

If you want a book that’s scary, life-like and spooky, then this is the book you’re looking for. Recommended.

This small town is a hoot!

I love the work of Maddie James. I know I’m going to get a story with heart that will stay with me. This one was no different. I’m glad I picked this book up. I won’t forget it.

The writing flows well. Once I opened the book, I had to know what would happen next. Lucki is great. I liked her hesitancy. I felt like I was right there with her, fumbling through what she was going to do with life and with Sam. She’s got a good head on her shoulders and I rooted for her right away. I loved how she worked out what she wanted to do with JJ, too. Smart girl.

Sam…at first, I didn’t like him much. I’ll be honest. I wanted to conk him on the head. I kept thinking, can’t you see what’s right in front of you? But with that said, I loved, LOVED the way the story was handled. Maddie James kept me right there, even when I wasn’t thrilled, needing to know that things would work out. I came around on Sam and by the end, I rooted for him, too.

A plan born of desperation…

Once the toast of society, Grace Cabot and her sisters now await the shame of losing high status and fine luxuries upon the death of the Earl of Beckington. But once a stolen embrace with the wrong man leads her to be discovered in the arms of Geoffrey, the Earl of Merryton, her plan takes a most unexpected—and scorching—twist.

Though his golden-haired, in-name-only bride is the definition of disorder, he can’t resist wanting her in every way. But once her secrets meet his, society might consider their lives to be ruined beyond repair…while Geoffrey might just see it as a new beginning.

Two imperfect wrongs just might make the best right of all.

Julia London writes engaging characters sure to charm the reader. This was definitely the case with this book. I loved them, I hated them and at times I wanted to put the book down, but I’m glad I saw it through. The writing is crisp. The characters are imperfect and frankly, this was a good book.

Grace is unique. She’s feisty and knows what she wants. Initially, she wasn’t one of my favorites because well…trapping a man in marriage seemed…silly. She’s so forthright otherwise, why doesn’t she stick to what works or better yet, find a guy who likes her pluckiness? That aside, I grew to enjoy her character and liked how she worked with Jeffery. They didn’t seem to me to be suited for each other, but that’s what I liked–seeing them having to coexist.

Jeffery…where do I begin? The guy has issues. I liked how the author tackled his form of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) because it made him realistic. People have issues. His fixation with seeing women tied up and in sexual situations was new, but it’s not really heavy BDSM. Honestly, he just likes a little satin mixed in. Honestly, I have yet to meet a guy who doesn’t see most everything in a sexual fashion. I didn’t dislike Jeffery, but he was hard to take at times.

Still, this made for a good read and one I’d pick up again.

If you like books that are a little off the beaten path and sure to please, then this might be the book for you.

A dark and electrifying novel about addiction, fanaticism, and what might exist on the other side of life.

In a small New England town, over half a century ago, a shadow falls over a small boy playing with his toy soldiers. Jamie Morton looks up to see a striking man, the new minister. Charles Jacobs, along with his beautiful wife, will transform the local church. The men and boys are all a bit in love with Mrs. Jacobs; the women and girls feel the same about Reverend Jacobs — including Jamie’s mother and beloved sister, Claire. With Jamie, the Reverend shares a deeper bond based on a secret obsession. When tragedy strikes the Jacobs family, this charismatic preacher curses God, mocks all religious belief, and is banished from the shocked town.

Jamie has demons of his own. Wed to his guitar from the age of thirteen, he plays in bands across the country, living the nomadic lifestyle of bar-band rock and roll while fleeing from his family’s horrific loss. In his mid-thirties — addicted to heroin, stranded, desperate — Jamie meets Charles Jacobs again, with profound consequences for both men. Their bond becomes a pact beyond even the Devil’s devising, and Jamie discovers that revival has many meanings.

Stephen King isn’t called the master of horror for nothing. His books are guaranteed to cause nightmares and to stick with the reader long after the last page. This book was no different.

I’ll admit. The beginning seemed slow. Really slow. I thought, there is no way this all works together. Why am I still getting these little tidbits of information? Hang in there, because it really does all go together.

Now all these little bits aren’t boring. I felt like I got to know Jamie Morton quite well. I could pretty much see the guy. I didn’t like him–not all the time, but I could see why he did what he did. The sweet little boy starts out just that. Sweet. It’s life and experiences in various bands that help to shape him and make him into a bit of a monster. He’s redeemable and that’s worth reading.

Then there’s Charles Jacobs. He’s a minister and seems to be quite good. But what he seems and who he is aren’t the same things. This guy…he brought a whole slew of emotions in me. I liked him, felt sorry for him, wanted to throttle him, then pitied him. He’s an interesting character. He’s full of surprises and ratchets up the fear factor by being someone you could know in real life.

There were times while reading this book that I wasn’t sure what would happen next. The term revival isn’t just for the title. Revival pertains to not only the religious situations, but also to life. Just when it seems like something can’t turn for the better, it does. It also turns for the worse. That’s what was so…scary good about this book. I never know what would happen and sure as heck didn’t see the ending coming. Wow.

If you want a book that will stay with you long after the last page with haunting characters and a plot that’s complex but interesting, then this is the book for you.  Recommended.

Welcome to Valentine Valley!

The Silver Creek Rodeo is in full swing, and everyone’s talking about the rancher who came to town…

Bed-and-breakfast owner Amanda Cramer wants nothing more than a quiet, private life. Ex-rodeo star Mason Lopez knows all about the limelight. He’d avoid it if he could, but since one last ride could mean saving his family’s ranch, he’ll go all in. When he gets to Valentine Valley for the Silver Creek Rodeo, Mason checks into the Connections B&B and finds himself immediately drawn to the beautiful, reserved woman who owns it.

Mason has only three days in town . . . can he convince Amanda to open her heart to him and welcome the world back in?

Two souls who probably wouldn’t have found each other any other way, but are completely destined to be together.

I seem to be on a roll, reading books with wounded souls. I’m not sure if it’s a new trend or just the luck of the draw as to the books I’ve picked up. I have to say, even though this book is short, it packs a punch. There’s a lot going on here. Emma Cane has written characters I rooted for and people I wanted to spend more time with.

Mason isn’t just a rancher. Nope, he’s not that simple (although ranchers can be complex and it’s a good thing). He’s a former bull rider who wants sponsorship and to save the ranch. There’s a lot going on in his past–some of which isn’t his doing. I liked that he wasn’t about to give up, even though there were moments when the body was certainly weak. I liked that I could see him. I could understand he’d been beaten up by the life he’d chosen–bull riding cannot be easy, although I don’t want to find out firsthand. He was one I wanted to get with the heroine and see them have a good ending. I liked his patience and kindness, even when he thought he wasn’t being a nice guy.

Amanda, the heroine, was just as complex. She’s not just a bed and breakfast owner. Nope. I loved how the author peeled away her layers through the story. She became more interesting as I made progress in the book. At first, I wasn’t sold on Amanda. She seemed standoffish and a little bitter. As I got to know her, I understood why and wanted her to get that HEA she deserved.

This isn’t a long story, so there isn’t much time to develop the romance–three days to be exact, but there is just enough to make a good tale. If you want a story heavy on heart and understanding, then this might be the read for you.

I’m new to the writings of Linda Broday, but I’m glad I took the leap and tried this book. Her writing flows well and kept me entertained throughout. I wanted to know more and really felt like I was in Battle Creek, Texas with these characters.

Delta Dandridge is a complex character. She’s running from a rough past and fully ready to put that past behind her. I liked that she wasn’t wallowing in pity. She had grit and took on life. That was important because I wanted to root for her. I wasn’t wild about the idea of becoming a mail order bride, but that practice was acceptable back in the day. That was her way out and when that didn’t work so well, I liked that she didn’t hide. She went forward for what she wanted. You go girl!

Cooper came off a little rough, too, but once his hard shell was pierced, I saw a pretty nifty guy. I liked that he was wounded, too. He had some issues and thought he couldn’t get past them. He was the kind of guy I could enjoy and wanted to see him and Delta get that HEA. He’s troubled and sometimes lets that get him down, but underneath he’s the right man for Delta and I couldn’t get enough of them together.

There are a few subplots to the story. I won’t divulge much, but there is a lot going on and it’s all tied together, so don’t put this book down.

He’s rich. He’s handsome. He’s everything she wants, but nothing she thinks she can have.

I loved the idea of a guy that is so head-over-heels for a woman that he’s willing to fight for her no matter what. That sums up Filthy Rich. Nartan…he’s sexy and knows it, but he’s not vain. He just knows what he wants. I liked that Ms. Ryder wrote him in such a way that I could see him and man, was he a presence. I love that he was willing to chase Celeste and prove he wasn’t like her ex. Honestly, that was the best part of the story.

Celeste…now where do I begin? I liked the character because she was someone I could root for. She’s got issues in her past in the form of an ex who is…let’s just say he’s not very nice at all. I liked that she was wounded and relatable. She was someone I could see as one of my friends. I wanted her to succeed and get the guy. That said, her wishy-washy-ness early on was irritating. I understood WHY she wasn’t sure about Nartan, but watching her go back and forth got tedious.

Still, the chemistry between these two is off the charts and worth reading. If you like a book with a crazy rich man, a woman who wants said man and plenty of heat, then this might be the book for you.

He’s become bitter and closed off, spending his days missing his children and his nights wishing for someone to love. So when the snow prevents Russell from leaving his cabin, Xavier finds himself wondering if Russell might just be the man he’s been waiting for.

Sometimes two wrongs can be the perfect right.

I love to read stories of men in love. Does it have to happen in a long period of time? Not always and not for Russell and Xavier. They think being together might be a mistake. It just might not be.

The writing in this story flowed well. Once I stared, I couldn’t put the book down. I’m sorry it took me so long to get to it. I would’ve missed two flawed, but fun characters. Alexander’s story is definitely one I won’t forget.

That said, there were a few things I struggled with. I’m not a tall person at 5 feet tall. For Russell to struggle with driving the SUV…he’d have to be shorter than me. Did that make him less handsome or harder for me to see in my mind? No, but that hard-to-believe detail did detract from the story a bit. The cabin in the woods and meeting in a snowstorm trope has been used, but Alexander writes the story in a fresh way that had me invested in what would happen next. Also, Xavier and Russell seemed to know rather fast that they were meant to be. For some, this might be a problem. I actually liked this angle because love can happen in a matter of minutes.

If you want a book that’s got hot moments among the cold, then this might be the book for you. Recommended.
