This is the first Liza Kay book I’ve ever read and I’m glad I picked it up. The story is interesting and kept me wanting to know what would happen next. The characters are unique and the setting was beautiful. I felt like I was in Norway with Ruben and Aleks.

I did enjoy the story, but there were a few quirks that kept me from fully enjoying this tale. One thing that kept tripping me up was the telling and not showing. I felt like I was right there in the setting, but I had a hard time sorting out the choreography when Ruben and Aleks were together. Another thing that might not bother everyone, but stuck out for me was the independently moving body parts. Plus, there were comments in the story that…made me uncomfortable. Once I got into the mindset that Ruben was a twink, that helped. Now, that said, I did like the book. With a little tweaking, this could be a really great story.

Bottom line, I liked reading about Aleks and Ruben. They’re great characters. I hope the author revisits them. I’ll read it.

Now I mentioned earlier that I had a hard time with this book. I did, but maybe that was what the author wanted. To get me to think and wonder. If so, she succeeded.

If you want a book that will make you think, wonder and reconsider, then this might be the book for you.

Jude and Paige have chemistry and it’s evident, even when things aren’t going right for them. That’s what I love about the both of them. They never give up. Okay, so there are bleak moments. What book doesn’t have those? But it’s how Paige and Jude get past them is the core of the story. I loved it. I’m glad I read this book and can’t wait to go back and read the other stories. I can’t wait for Phoenix to get his book, too.

Christina James has a way with words. She’s great with spinning characters and I’m glad I got to read this book. I didn’t read the first two books in the series, but I didn’t feel lost. This was a great standalone read.

There are a few moments of telling rather than showing and independently moving body parts which drew me out of the story, but these weren’t so many that I didn’t come back to the book. I also would’ve liked to have seen a tick more action in the story. It seemed to happen quick and then be over, but again, it wasn’t enough to rip me away from the book.

Honestly, I liked this book. I liked how Mackenna and Cade got to know each other. That’s the thing with the action being over. Yes, it happened fast, but there was plenty of time for the characters to get to know each other. It happened quite naturally and at a great pace. I felt like I was there in the cabin with them and like I was in the story watching them fall together. Mackenna has more than just her job getting the story told going on with her. She believes in conservation and saving animals. I liked how Cade wasn’t nearly as opposite as he seemed in that respect. It was sexy.

If you want a book with a hot hero, a feisty heroine with more than her job on her mind, then this might be the story for you.

I love a good mystery. I cut my teeth on Agatha Christie novels when I was in junior high, so when I saw this book up for grabs, I nabbed it.

The premise of Funeral Hotdish is exciting. There’s possible murder, overdoses, family drama… oh and a mob situation to boot. With all of that in the plot, the story kept my attention. I wanted to know how everything would shake out. I mean, Sammy Gravano and John Gotti in a book? Yeah, this has to be a winner.

Well…kind of a winner. While the book was good and the plot had more twists and turns than a mountain road, I had a few issues.  Ms. Bommersbach has a definitive writing style and while she’s descriptive, the author tends to head hop a bit. I had to go back an reread to make sure I knew whose point of view I was in a few times. Some readers might not be bothered by this. Unfortunately, I was. Another thing I had a tick of trouble with were the descriptive parts. Now don’t get me wrong. I felt like I was right there with Joya sorting out this mystery. I did. But there were times the story felt more like informational dumps, rather than pulling me in with description.

Now I know it sounds like I wasn’t thrilled. Not so. There is a thread of family and heartbreak that runs through this tale and I’m glad it did. It made me more emotionally involved with the story. The teen and boyfriend who takes the ecstasy…that thread hit close to home because the time the story is set (the late 1990s) was a formative time for me. I could see my friends in the characters of Amber and Johnny. So kudos to Ms. Bommersbach for reeling me in that way.

If you want a book that’s got twists and turns to boot, has characters you won’t forget and heart, then this might be the story for you.

I hadn’t read a book by Steven Manchester before I picked up A Changing Season. I wasn’t sure what I’d be getting into. Books with dogs tend to be bittersweet and while those are good books, I wanted something a little lighter. I got that with this book. Yes, there is tension and more than a few black moments, but all in all, it’s a good read.

I liked the bond between Billy and Jimmy, his dog. Being an animal person myself, I could relate to the way the two were together. Dogs can be the best of friends for a human—if the human lets the relationship happen. I liked how the author allowed Jimmy to be that silent voice of reason and comfort for Billy.

There were moments in the book that were a tad predictable. I won’t go into what so I don’t ruin the story, but honestly, the predictability didn’t take away from the enjoyment I had while reading.

I liked the book and if you’re looking for a coming-of-age book that has a lot of heart, then this might be the book for you.

I wasn’t sure what I was getting into when I picked up this book. Every Anxious Wave started out rather fluffy and retro. The idea of a wormhole where you can go back and visit concerts from the bands of your past… seems cool. Had the book kept with that theme, I would’ve been totally on board. Think of the concerts that could be seen! How many could be videotaped for posterity or videotaped in better definition? It’s mind-boggling.

But there’s a twist. Karl, the main character, accidentally sends his friend not back to 1980 to prevent the killing of John Lennon, but to 980 AD. Oops. At least in 1980, he could get back—there’s tech that could help. Not in 980. So what’s a couple of guys to do?

For me, this is where the believability sort of went downhill. I liked the idea of the mistake with the date. Hey, he’s stuck and we’ve got to get him back. Cool idea. But there were things in the book that didn’t quite get explained. Like how’d he get the wormhole? Where’d it come from? Was there a downside? I would’ve liked a little more explanation so I understood the mechanics of the wormhole, but I must say I was distracted by the idea of going back to visit concerts.

The other thing I had a problem with was the relationship between Lena and Karl. The whole thing felt forced. Like, they were together and that’s great. The development just didn’t feel like it was there. I did like the complications brought in for these two, but I wish there had been more of a jump into their emotions than happened.

Still, this was a fun read and made me long for the concerts I never got a chance to see given by musicians that died before my time. Thank you, Mo Daviau for that trip down memory lane.

Steamy nights and a complicated relationship…this book is an interesting read.

The title of the book caught my attention. Acapulco. I’d love to go there and I was able to vicariously. The author has a smooth writing style which is easy to read. I was transported to the tropics and had a good time.

The characters are complicated. I can’t say I liked them all. I had issues with most of them. Here, let me explain. Suzie went to Acapulco, met a guy and married him. Nothing wrong with that. Hey, we all make quick decisions. The thing I kept having trouble with was her reluctance to tell anyone. I won’t go into a ton of details or give away spoilers, but I had a very hard time buying her reasoning. I didn’t think it was something to be ashamed of. Another thing Suzie did that annoyed me was she had a relationship with James–her new fiance–but couldn’t tell him. I felt awful for him. Now to be fair, I was emotionally invested, so that’s part of the reason I am team James. If she loved him that much, then he deserved the truth.

I liked James. He’s got his own problems, but he’s a good guy. I rooted for him to get a happy ending.

Then there’s Joaquin. Not going to lie, I didn’t like him. Not a bit. If that was the author’s intention then she hit the mark. I’d call him slime. But here’s where I have the rub with this story. Some of Suzie’s decisions concerning Joaquin really bothered me. Yeah, he might not be ready to give her up, but she seemed to give in to him rather easily–despite repeatedly not liking him and reminding herself she was in love with James.

Okay, so it probably seems like I didn’t like the book. Not true. It’s a good escapist story. If you’re not bothered by a bit of cheating, then this might be the book of you. While I questioned some of the actions of the characters, I did enjoy the book.

This book wasn’t anything I expected and it’s a good and bad thing.

You might be wondering. Why would I start a review with the above sentence? When I opened Whistling Women by Kelly Romo, I had sort of an idea what I was getting into–there are sisters, there’s strife and an interesting story of how they might get back together as a family. As far as that goes, I wasn’t steered wrong. The story has its interesting parts and characters that kept my attention. I liked Rumor. She’s spunky and forthright. I rooted for her.

That said, there were parts that, well, dragged for me. I’m not knocking Kelly Romo’s writing style. She’s written a vivid story and paints an interesting picture of 1930’s California. I even liked the quirkiness of Addie. But the story definitely dragged for the first half of the book. I struggled, even though I wanted to keep going in order to reach the pay off. That’s not to say this was a bad book. It wasn’t. There’s a lot of potential to the book and with a little more editing, it can be great.

What was the thing I totally didn’t expect in the book? The nudist colony. I won’t elaborate so I don’t ruin the story for you, but it wasn’t where I thought the story would go. It’s definitely quirky.

If you want a book that’s heavy on heart and a little different, then this might be the book for you.
