Once again, Don Callander has crafted a fantastically imaginative and exciting story about wizards and their world. This is the third in the ‘Mancer Series, and I have really enjoyed each one. Callander gives an introduction in each so that readers who begin in the middle of the series are quickly updated and each book stands alone with a totally complete and finished plot.

I think one of the greatest strengths in Geomancer is the way in which Callander is able to juggle a varied panoply of characters and locations so that the reader never feels lost or unsettled. The descriptions of the Stone Men’s village is unique and complex, as are the Stone Men themselves. An ancient and evil Geomancer turned the entire village into stone and understandably, after living this way for centuries, they want the enchantment lifted. They also don’t trust wizards, again for a very good reason, so Douglas must use all his abilities to work with them. I like Douglas, especially because of his understanding and compassion for the Stone Men.

There are many different supporting characters in this novel, and they are each brought to life with amazing depth and clarity. Many different species are active in the story, as well as magical objects with personalities and abilities of their own. I love Bronze Owl, Doorknocker and official greeter, who is also able to move to different locations and instruct the ornate “Ostrich-Hume Pen, which had been busily writing to his dictation all morning.”

Lovers of fantasy are certain to find the wizard’s world in Geomancer to be spellbinding and exciting, filled with action and adventures in a variety of different richly described settings.

This is a wonderfully imaginative novel with some really fantastic characters. Douglas is a fine journeyman Pyromancer, eager to prove himself. When it appears that Douglas has been captured by the evil coven, his fiancée, Myrn Manstar, an apprentice Aquamancer, sets out to help him. There is also a host of other wonderful supporting characters, such as Douglas’s familiar, a smart sea otter named Marbleheart. Another of my favorites is the Blue Teakettle, who always knows when a visitor will be arriving, and who sends meals magically all the way from Wizards’ High.

This is the second novel in the ‘Mancer Series, but it can be enjoyed all by itself. The prologue has a summary of the first novel so that the reader is fully caught up right from the start. I love the variety of characters which populate this novel. Of course there are wizards, faeries, dwarfs, sprites, and sea creatures. But there are also razors which strop themselves and then shave the wizard after the shaving brush has jumped “gleefully into Mug and whipped up a froth of fragrant lather.”

Douglas’s travels and adventures are exciting, filled with action, and Douglas certainly has to think fast and act with courage and daring if he is going to save Old Kingdom from the havoc and destruction which the Coven of Black Witches is wrecking. If he doesn’t stop them, they will move out into the rest of the world in their quest to gain unlimited power.

Lovers of fantasy, young and old alike, will truly enjoy this captivating novel.

Don Callander has a strong sense of magic himself and his characters, whether they are human, fairy, animal, or even a blue tea kettle, are amazingly well drawn. I was captured from the very beginning, and I willingly and happily traveled along with Marbleheart and Ben from one adventure to another.

The pacing of the novel is excellent and the pages seem to turn themselves. As other characters and a side-plots work there way in, the reader is skillfully taken from Wizards’ High to far distant lands and back again, and the ride is truly wonderful. The plot takes a number of unexpected turns along the way, and I was kept in suspense right up to the end.

Fantasy readers will not go wrong if they decide to join Marbleheart and Ben on their questing adventure. Magic and fun, danger and thrills, abound.

She spends her life trying to avoid authority and do what she wants. Valaan is a sober, thoughtful man, but both twins feel the bond grow stronger as the humans come closer to the elves forest.

I found this book intriguing. The twins want to be together and Rea longs to know about the elves. They are not aware of the plots of their elders and rebel when they find out. At times the story dragged a bit, but soon cracked back into top gear again.

Magic, adventure, fighting, all sorts of danger – all these meld together to make a good fantasy book.

Once Flarman decides to accept him, Douglas is introduced to a very strange and wonderful household, run by a big, blue teakettle.

Don Callander has written a magical fantasy novel filled with a large variety of interesting and well-developed characters. As Douglas’s education progresses, he learns that there is a war developing. The wizard Frigeon is trying to take over the world and turn it into a wasteland. Those on the side of good must fight and must win, according to Flarman. “We can never entirely destroy evil. The best we can do is expect it, face it squarely, and fight it. To do otherwise is to let the Dark and Frigeon win, don’t you see? Well, we will win!”

There are so many wonderful characters in this story that it is hard to pick favorites, but the bronze owl is not only magical, but very smart and witty as well. There are also fairies and dwarves and various other species and each is described in rich detail as are their homes so that I really felt as if I were in the middle of this world.

The action is fast and well-paced. I found that the pages just flew by and I had a very hard time putting the book down. The suspense grows as Douglas and Flarman have to complete their traps for Frigeon, and time is running out. I enjoyed my trip through the various locations in this world, whether it was the dwarves’ caves or the undersea world of the Sea Fire. And all through the various events there was the underlying mystery of whether or not a way could be found to defeat Frigeon, and once the plan was conceived, was there enough time to carry it out.

Lovers of fantasy set in magical worlds are sure to enjoy Pyromancer, and I for one have already picked up the two other books in this series because Douglas’s adventures are definitely not to be missed.

I wasn’t as fond of Tempe’s husband, Hutch, as he seemed a bit flat, but otherwise, I thought the characters were natural and believable. The atmosphere in the haunted house was very well portrayed and I was really on edge whenever Tempe was there. Obviously the house contains more mysteries than just the one Tempe is supposed to solve.

Overall, Marilyn Meredith gives appropriate clues and plays fair with her readers, allowing the suspense to build, but I did think it was strange that guidance counselor claims she’s never heard of one of the high school students, a student who keeps making contact with Tempe. Also, the mystery is much more about figuring out how to set the spirits free than it is about solving the murder.

This is a lovely cozy mystery which fans of that genre will certainly enjoy. It is the twelfth in a series, but I never would have known that if I hadn’t seen it in the title. It works just fine as a stand alone, and I had no difficulties following the plot. If you are looking for a mystery involving spirits, this might just fit the bill.

She is totally unaware of regular human life, and so it is easy for her to be taken advantage of, but she learns fast. She meets a young sailor named Ash who is as different from the normal humans as she is and together they work to conquer a series of trials.

The settings for this story are richly drawn in complete detail so I really felt as if I were in the middle of the action, dodging blows, fighting my way through jungles, sailing through storms, and trying to manage magic. I enjoyed the relationship between Neve and Ash as they each tried to figure the other out. Both of them are different and both have had to learn to cope with their differences. It was wonderful to see how their friendship and trust develops through their many trials and tribulations.

This is a very exciting book with a number of twists and turns in the plot which keeps the suspense building until the very end. I found that I was unable to put the book down and I read it in one sitting. I think fantasy readers will find Exile to be an excellent choice for a thoughtful and at the same time rivetingly exciting adventure. I look forward to reading more works by this author.

Robert Adams has written a story rich in details and descriptions. I did think that the use of very unusual names was a bit of a distraction. Names such as Eeshmahehl or Kweebehkeekos were difficult to manage and there are very few characters with names that come easily to the tongue. In addition, the dialogue was frequently very dialectal, which also added a degree of complexity to the reading. I am sure this was done for atmosphere and authenticity, but I personally would have preferred more pronounceable words and less dialect.

Adams has written a very violent book as well, which makes sense because he is portraying a war. There is an unrelenting outpouring of both physical and sexual graphic violence, with almost no break. I found the violence to be more intense than I generally want, but at the same time I do understand why the author felt it was an integral part of his story.

I enjoyed several of the characters, especially Geros Lahvoheetos. He found himself in battle and suddenly after he “had accidentally lanced one rebel and cut the throat of a second while his mule trampled down a third, he had been living in the very lap of his former fantasies. With his young master, the Vahrohneeskos Ahndros, kept unconscious by the arts of Master Ahlee, the physician, there was no one to betray him, to reveal the sad truth that he had never been aught save a body servant and musician, who had always privately considered himself to be a coward.” I really enjoyed watching Geros develop into a brave fighter, learning the difference between being afraid and being a coward.

This novel is the fourth in The Horseclans Series, which contains eighteen novels in its entirety. If you are a fan of fantasy novels about war and conquest, then this series might just be what you are looking for.

Serena McKay believes that paranormal activity isn’t magical or mystical, but that it all can be explained with logical, scientific rationale. Carter Shehan drove Serena insane. She was convinced he was a hack, leading people on and deluding them with stories of the paranormal, giving them false hope when sanity and logic was behind all his outlandish claims. Still, fire burned between them both. Carter was more than intrigued, he found himself captivated by her passion. Coming to one of Serena’s lectures and signings, he listened to her, riveted, then happily gets her to sign his book. They clash swords admirably. It’s only after this initial meeting, when they decide to stay at the same Manor house – Serena to disprove the ghost stories and Carter to prove the tales – that the sparks really begin to fly. Passion ignites between the two.

This story was a lot of fun, with plenty of spice, passion and more than a few lost tempers in the fray. It’s not your regular sweet story of two gentle people. Yet the author writes the book with such style and light heartedness none of the passionate arguments could be taken to heart.  It’s clear the sparks are repressed sexual tension and a whole lot of chemistry blazing between Serena and Carter. With a feel-good atmosphere and the backdrop of a spooky, haunted house – complete with spirits/ghosts – there’s plenty of things going bump in the night.

I really enjoyed this book.  It’s a fresh read that had me smiling and laughing aloud in places. I really enjoyed how Serena and Carter didn’t just meet, their gazes catching and fall instantly in love – this was something they both worked at, fought against and eventually capitulated to with relish. It was a lovely change and very well executed.

Transitions takes us on a journey through time. In modern day Birmingham , a group of university students become embroiled in a love story almost 2,000 years old as the ghost of Gaius Lucius, a Roman officer tries to reclaim his lost love.

What can Helen, a driven and ambitious student with high hopes for the future, do to solve this ancient riddle? And why is Brandon making late night visits to her house with tokens of love?

What happens when a desperate Roman soldier from ancient times has only one shot at his goal, and that means arriving in modern-day England to make things happen?

Gaius Lucius is a hard working, sincere, Roman who is losing his beloved wife. He tries everything to save her, but she’s sick, dying. His last option is so unconventional that he’d normally laugh it off as a joke. However, there are no other options. Gotta give the guy points for fighting to the end for love.

He shows up on a college campus in a non-corporeal form to disturb the lives of some students.

This story flips back and forth between his tale in the past, and that of the present college students. Their perception of the occurrences is frightening.

Brandon is a loner, Helen is ambitious yet not confident in her physical appearance, and her friend Tina is easygoing and likeable. At first, Helen does something to make her unlikeable. She accidentally hurts Brandon but is then in too much of a hurry to assist him as he’s lying on the ground bleeding. Brandon may be a loner, but he has things to recommend him. Then strange things happen to him, mainly, the Roman starts to take over his life. Things get really weird for him. For an odd reason, he likes Helen, the woman who knocked him over then ran off. He can’t stop thinking about her. Next, Helen keeps thinking about him. A possible romance is in the offing.

Helen, Brandon, and their friends, as well as the Roman are realistically drawn. The style and language of the story are presented well. The mystery in the plot keeps things going. One doesn’t know what to expect. This is a unique story of one love found and another lost.
